2009 StR Community Draft Board: Pick #25
Blake Griffin, Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, Hasheem Thabeet, Stephen Curry, Ty Lawson, James Harden, Jrue Holiday, Demar DeRozan, Jonny Flynn, Jordan Hill, Jeff Teague, DeJuan Blair, Earl Clark, Eric Maynor, Terrence Williams, B.J. Mullens, Tyler Hansbrough James Johnson, Patrick Mills, Omri Casspi, Sam Young and Chase Budinger are off the board in the first 24 positions on our board.
(Of course, you'll notice Gani Lawal and Budinger tied for the win at pick No. 24. Lawal promptly removed his name from draft eligibility rolls. I hope the two are not related. Budinger gets the victory by default, though I assume Lawal voters might have broken in such a way to suppress Budinger's total. Oh well.)
Reminder: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is draft board, a list with the order of prospects you'd like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we'd take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Petrie or anyone else would choose in a slot.
Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick's choices. Poll will remain open until 8 AM PDT on Tuesday.

Voting Beaubois here
Since the other player at the bottom of the draft I prefer is Derrick Brown, and he isn’t available to pick.
On the other hand, the sooner Henderson gets off, the more we can get to other players.

Also voted Beaubois
although I have good vibes about Heytvelt and Collison

Collison yes
Especially if the Kings selected Jennings. Collison would be a nice piece to help Jennings develop and push him. The fact that Collison is from LA doesn’t hurt either.

Henderson needs a publicist
I googled Henderson and after ten pages of Google Images, still no Gerald. And that includes the synonymous Gerald Henderson who played 13 NBA seasons (known mostly on the Boston Celtics).
Budinger, Casspi, Maynor over Henderson? Is a Duke pedigree the kiss of death? say it ain’t so, Shel.

McCants >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Henderson
It’s not even close. And McCants has struggled in the NBA. Where is Henderson going to succeed where McCants didn’t? Henderson is far less talented, the defense is about the same, they’re the same size, McCants is vastly better at everything else……… I don’t see it.

nope
Henderson has a mindset that Mcants never had. Not to mention much more athletisim. Less talented? Mabye in scoring. But saying Henderson and Mccants are the same level as a defender is just silly.

McCants is already a really good defender in the NBA
It remains to be seen if Henderson’s game can translate. And I really don’t think the difference in athleticism is significant at all. I don’t put a whole lot of stock in the combine, but McCants’ max vertical was 34.5", Henderson’s 35".
The fact is, you don’t generally draft an undersized player if you’re hoping for defense. And Henderson is nowhere near as dynamic a scorer as McCants was.
Henderson screams bust to me.

A bust at #25?
Come on.

More players in the draft end up as busts than as rotation players
We all know that. I wouldn’t touch Henderson.
Take away the Duke magnifier and you have an undersized SG with shaky offense. How valuable is that? The guys who have made it as 6’4" shooting guards are both spectacular athletes (Henderson is very good, so okay) and extremely talented offensively. Henderson is not that by a longshot.
So you’re left with a 6’4" defensive roleplayer? How does that work?

A lottery pick that doesn't pan out is a bust
A #25 pick that doesn’t make it is the rule, not the exception. I think that “bust” is a little strong.
That said, I think that Henderson is worthwhile venture in the 20’s. And to answer your last question, it works out for those with the proper desire. Ask Bruce Bowen, James Posey, Dahntay Jones…

Posey was the 18th overall pick in 99
I hope that doesn’t demean your overall point though.

James Posey is 6'8" and Bruce Bowen is 6'7"
The comparison players to Henderson are, maybe, Dahntay Jones, and Maurice Evans. But Jones is a fringe NBA player even if Denver found a role for him, and Evans only became a productive player when he learned to knock down 3s. Henderson shot 33% from 3 in college. I suppose he could get better and rise to the level of those guys, but otherwise I really don’t see much of a place for Henderson.
There are still more than 25 players I’d take before Henderson in this draft.

Fair enough
I will take the “defensive role player” at #25, pay him about a million a year for the next three years and hope that his offensive game develops.

Rashad McCants' agent would like a word

Do you think
that (a) McCants will play for a million a year, and (b) would he be satisfied as a “defensive role player?” If so, have McCants’ agent contact me. My email address can be found below.

I'm not sure about the million dollars part
But I don’t think people are exactly going to be clamoring for him. And I think the appealing thing about McCants is that he brings both offense and defense.
Otherwise, if it’s a defensive roleplayer you’re after, I would much rather go for someone like DeMarre Carroll (liver’s fine!) who has the type of size and athleticism you usually look for in a defensive stopper. I see him as a Renaldo Balkman type.
Henderson is a really good athlete, but he’s still going to have people shooting over him.
by nbrans on Jun 15, 2009 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Carroll can be had by signing him as a rookie FA
I’d rather draft someone with more value than him like a Derrick Brown, Darren Collison, or someone like that. (Collison will move up in this draft maybe.)

True
That’s the other thing, if you really want a wing who can come in and play some defense, there’s always a Jamario Moon, Dahntay Jones, Yakhoubia Diawara, etc. etc. etc. standing by.
And I voted for Collison.
by nbrans on Jun 15, 2009 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Carroll might be great bench filler as well
The Kings are going to have 13 spots open anyway. You only get 3 draft picks. Unless you get more (without losing assets), then why not roll the dice on a guy or two. What’s the worst that can happen? The Kings lose 17 games again?

The big difference and in my mind an important one - Henderson is a coachable athlete
He knows systems, he is bright and is disciplined. Take McCants, even Crash Wallace – add some discipline and brains – you end up with Dwayne Wade and Kobe Bryant/Tracy McGrady

Actually it's the opposite
Duke players look better at Duke than they do in the NBA.

Agreed with Shelden Williams
Not so much with Elton Brand, Carlos Boozer, Grant Hill, Shane Battier…

Yeah.
Bad: Redick, Jones, Dunleavy, Langdon, Jay Williams (even before crash), Avery
Good: Brand, Boozer, Hill, Battier, Maggette, Deng
Guess it’s more mixed.

It's gotten better in recent years
But let’s not forget guys like Josh McRoberts or even a guy like Greg Paulus. Good enough to be starting PG at Duke (for a while, at least), but didn’t even test the waters of the NBA.

He's solid but not flashy
I think he has a possibility to be a poor man’s Paul Pierce. Maybe that’s a stretch, but he’s got a very good game and improves a ton every year.
