On one hand, I wanted Sam to grill him as to why he hasn’t worked out with us. On the other hand, I don’t want Ricky to be scared away.
I kind of feel that way too
but I don’t think its so much of a Ricky thing as it is a Dan Fegan thing. I think it’d be really smart of Fegan to explain his reasoning to Geoff Petrie (which probably has to do with Ricky not really being able to show his ability to lead a team in those workouts). Giving the impression that he’s willing to work out probably would go a long way. Hopefully Petrie can convince him to do a light workout. We’ll see

Kid gives a great interview
obviously he has a lot of language barrier issues, but overall he gets his point across quite well. Seems to be very mature and poised.
I also like that he knows we’re a young team and that it appeals to him because he can not only get his minutes but that he wants to be a leader and earn respect.
www.mancancook.net
I heard that and was surprised he didn’t know any of the players’ names. He said he looked at the roster and the ages. Is that all he knows about the Kings, I wonder?
Kings don't get national tv coverage in the States
probably not a whole ton of coverage in Spain
These kids get prepped for a lot of questions, but the names of players and the crappy teams might not be too high on his priority list.
www.mancancook.net
But it’s a crappy team that I assume he would like to play for and has a good chance of drafting him. To me it seems like the first thing you want to learn about a team you may be a part of: who is on it.
The interview discovered an important fact
Ricky doesn’t play with the Kings on 2k9
Nobody expects a Spanish Acquisition!
Me... after a few uhhh

Minutes
I really respect the fact that he’s so adamant about wanting to play, wanting to get minutes. It’s been said many times in many different ways, but the studs always want the ball in their hands.
"I want to have minutes."
“I have to find the team who wants me, who really wants me.” Ricky, you have come to the right place. It seems like we have a good amount of minutes at point guard available.
maybe the best quote i've ever read:
“The Kings will look to draft a PG at the #4 spot. Ricky Rubio would fall to them in a dream scenario. Their current PG is Beno Udrih, who’s only real weakness is he doesn’t play the game of basketball very well. Outside of that, he’s solid.”
Sad, but so true.

Don't forget this quote by Amick
Rubio does not have any other visits scheduled on his trip. The next day could very well determine whether that remains the case, so it’s a vital time for this high-profile prospect in that respect
Come on GP, show him he doesn’t need to visit anyone else
That's a mistake
If he really doesn’t want to get drafted he needs to take a trip to Memphis and OKC and lite a joint two minutes into his interview.
Did anyone notice...
That Sam asked Ricky a question at one point, and when Ricky sought translation, the other guy translated the question in English. Nothing against Sam, but I think that might be a knock on his verbal communication skills.

Exactly
Sam kept saying things that were way over Ricky’s head. Off the top of my head I remember him referring to Chris Paul as a “bulldog.” Rubio probably doesn’t understand exactly what that means.

Exactly what a rebuilding team needs
I’m sorry ya’ll but can you honestly tell me now, these interviews and the contrast between them tell you nothing about the difference between Rubio the player and Jennings the player?? I’m not saying is gonna be a big factor in the final decision if it comes down to both those players but I can’t help and think than Rubio’s personality could push him towards the top, especially with the type of characters this team has.
Excitement
That’s what selling tickets to a losing team is all about until they get good. I can’t explain why, but Rubio brings it and Jennings just makes me worry.

If he can play, this kid will have his face everywhere soon.
Sam Amick, once again, fine fine work.
As for colloquialisms, RR is 18 and a baller. Spain is in Europe, not Uranus. The internet, international TV, twitter, Youtube, MTV – he gets it, the kid is a star at home, a professional athlete not a a farm boy. He speaks at least 4 languages (Spanish, Catalan, English and Spanglish). He can handle “hip hop” terms that I, (almost as old as Section ) can understand, he can handle it.

Catalan is a separate language from Castilian
Castilian being the “Spanish” that we Americans are all familiar with, and is the official language of Spain.
by kingsfan300 on Jun 16, 2009 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions
but isn't it still a Spanish dialect?
because Castilian is actually not too well known in America because most Hispanic people in America are from Latin American countries, which is quite different
www.mancancook.net
Apparently
If you speak one, you do not in fact speak the other. I say it counts as a separate language.
I'm with you
Castillian is the orginal name of the “Spanish” language, and Catalan is another language, they have similarities of course, but that happen with other languages as well. But yeah, Catalan is a different language from Castillian, but with a few similarities
A few similarities?
The difference isn’t all that much wider than American English and British/Irish/Scottish English, let’s be real here. Sure, they speak with a lisp in Barcelona, but that doesn’t really make it count as another language in my book (nor in any official book, as they all consider the two dialects of the Spanish language).
I believe you're wrong
otherwise prove I am the one who is wrong. The Catalan language has other letters that cannot be found in the Castillian language, Castillian is another name for the Spanish language. I think Catalan it’s a combination between Spanish, Italian, and French with some things of its own. And another fact that proves that Catalan is a language, it is the only official language in Andorra, which is a country, a very small one, but a country after all.
It's not a matter of accent
which you are referring to with these different forms of English. Catalan and Castillian really do differ from each other as a language. At least look it up online and see for yourself.
by kingsfan300 on Jun 16, 2009 11:57 PM PDT up reply actions
I did look it up online - 'dialect' is what I came up with. Feel free to point me in a direction that backs you up.
Also, comparing American English to what you’ll hear in Ireland or Scotland, the difference in the dialects is a lot more than an ‘accent’. Likewise with other dialects (German comes to mind – northern, southern, Swiss German…)
I’ll leave it at that, as it isn’t important to me. I was just doing a horrible job of making a point that iI didn’t find it all all that impressive that Ricky can speak Catalan and Castillian.
Catalan, Castilian, Basque, Galician and Aranese.
Quote from Wikipedia on Castillian:
In contemporary Spain, Castilian is just one of several regional languages spoken including Aranese, Basque, Catalan/Valencian and Galician. Today, about 350 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it the world’s second most spoken language in terms of native speakers but fourth in terms of total speakers. Mexico contains the largest population of Spanish speakers.
I have traveled to several regions of Spain and in Barcelona most people speak both languages. Ricky’s home town El Masnou is very small suburb (population just over 20,000) on the Northeast side of Spaing in the Providence Barcelona. I spoke to people who were able to understand my mexican spanish and could more or less understand their Catalan even though it was a little harder to do so than say Madrid or Marbella. To us most of us foreigners it will sound like just an accent or a different dialect but it is definitely a different language just like Cantonese and Taiwanese.
The lisp is actually pervasive in most of Spain although of Castillian origen. Words like Gracias sound like grahthiath and a Ibiza sounds like eebeethah.
Cisco and Rubio would be able to understand each other but Castillian would be the bridge.
Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.

by SactownheartOChouse on Jun 17, 2009 3:03 AM PDT up reply actions
I wouldn’t say it’s impressive, either. It’s natural if you come from that region of Spain. But it is two different languages.
how did a comment on Rubio being a polyglot that can understand American slang
become an argument of how (un)impressive it is to know Catalan and Castillian Spanish if you are from Barcelona?
Bottom Line: (1) The question is: can his basketball skills in Europe translate to the NBA
Botton Line (2): If Ricky Rubio can walk the walk, it doesn’t matter which talk he talk
by betweentheeyes on Jun 17, 2009 7:36 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Fair enough
The term you use, “Spanish”, is really just a political term used to refer to the language of a nation, and is not really the language itself. Castilian is the official language, and Catalan is another language. I think there is confusion with how we both view dialect, so I’ll leave it alone as well.
Knowing Castillian does not mean you know Catalan. To me, it has a lot of French elements.
Examples:
“My name is…”
Em dic... (catalan)
Mi nombre es… Me llamo (castillian)
“Do you speak English?”
Parles angles? (catalan)
Hablas ingles? (castillian)
“Do I need change?”
M’he de canviar? (catalan)
Necesito cambio? (castillian)
The lisp you’re talking about isn’t limited to Barcelona/Catalan, but is heard throughout Spain.
Dialect
it usually means that despite having slight differences (hence the use of the word dialect) , one dialect can still understand another because both fit under one language. In the case of Castilian and Catalan, they are not understandable to one another, so I wouldn’t consider it a dialect (although they have similar words). I
by kingsfan300 on Jun 16, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions
You're right
Gallego is another one. It’s like a mix of Spanish and Portuguese, but its a different language altogether
www.mancancook.net
It's some historical thing
like 15 centuries ago people used to speak differently in different parts of europe. Most languages are based on latin, but latin can change a lot in that span. Catalá has similarities with french and spanish, as they are the languages spoken around. The same way Galego has similarities with spanish and portuguese.
Nobody expects a Spanish Acquisition!
can't wait
to see what Amick has to publish in tomorrows paper. Lets hope some good details come out.
Is it possible RR did a workout...
on one of GP’s trips and we just don’t know it? (I’m honestly asking) The team has been open on everything else, but GP is GP and maybe he set something up while in Europe?
Doubt it
It was during the Spanish league playoffs and don’t think Joventut would give him permission to do anything like that. To me, watching him play against Real Madrid is what Petrie is going to base his decision on for the most part
Very unlikely
Rubio was banged up (even missed a game) and his team was in the midst of the playoffs.

You don’t need to visit any other NBA city. Sacramento is where you want to play. You will fit right in with the talent that you possess, and the talent the Kings need. Tu esta muy suave. You will immediately fill a void with your tenacity on defense and your oh so sweet passing. You will be the cornerstone of the franchise for many years to come. If we get Rubio I suppose we aren't going to use Princeton offense for a while or a lot
correct me if I’m wrong, maybe I’m confused, but I believe the Princeton offense requieres good passer and good shooters on the team, if Rubio is not a good shooter and proably won’t be at the start of next season, it makes sense with the up-tempo Westphal might implement, because Rubio will have the ball in his hands most of the time and make passes to Martin or Hawes or (insert name here). What I’m trying to say is if we get Rubio we’ll be very happy, that’s for sure, at least a lot of us will, but with him I can see the 09-10 Kings like the Hornets of two or one season ago or even the TrailBlazers from past seasons, and that’s not bad at all, IMO it’s something to be excited about. What do you think?
And sorry if my thoughts aren’t so accurate, I can’t watch a lot of NBA games where I live, and I’m not too familiar with the different styles of offense.
We have to get this guy!!!
If there is such a thing as basketball karma then we sure could use it now. (game 5; horry three.) damn that made me teary eyed. I dont think i’ve ever wanted one particular player soooo badly in a draft before. Not only could he save the kings, but he could also get us our arena and help the city of sacramento. RICKY!!!! Seems like a great kid and I wish him well
BUT “lacks the great explosiveness that top tier point guards in the league possses … He is forced to shoot high amount of attempts in the paint because his marginal leaping ability makes it difficult for him to finish around the basket … Heavily depends on the pick and roll to create his opportunities and does not show a great ability to break down defenders in ISO situations … Has gotten better at taking what’s open, but his pass first mentality still gets him into trouble as he passes up open shots … His jumper is still not a finished product by any means … Because it takes him a bit to get his feet set, and his release point is fairly low he still looks like a set shooter … Has battled some injuries over the last year, which raises the question of durability and whether he will be able to handle the rigors of an 82 game season … His game has been up and down this season after coming back from his injury”
[NBA Draft Net]
Everyone pretty much believes the tough Evans [from a fantastic program] will be a star. Rubio could be too, but he could also be the biggest hype bust in years—and his penchant for injuries, weak, one-dimensional play spells disaster for the next few years on this HORRIBLE kings team that is always injured and always putting up WEAK stuff.
Hope I’m wrong, but he looks like a good 4-5 years away from where we need him. Strong, athletic guards like his hero Paul are going to CHEW his ASS up in the NBA grind—and we’re gonna be watching a whole lot more of Beno, I bet, until RR’s turnovers go down and he develops more offense.
Then again, some people may prefer a homerun pass every now and then on Sportcenter to winning games ….. like the idiots who think personality fills seats, not Ws.
last time I checked
steve nash, tony parker, jason kidd, chancey billups, jose calderon weren’t very explosive. His issue is going to be strenght, not athletisim. But the kid has a good frame, and is a bigger, longer PG than average.
"Because they don't have four pointers."
- Antoine Walker, on why he shoots so many three pointers
Dude, your such a downer
Style will get people in the seats for a while, and then wins must follow to keep them there. Sure the kid could be a bust…..but so can everybody picked 2 thru 60. Cheer up!
I understand your point, but
He’s 18, and will be playing the smallest guy on the court.
How often do you say “that guy’s too weak to play PG.”
Unlike other young PG’s, his problem isn’t running a team, but developing his body.
I think getting stronger is a much safer bet compared to learning how to distribute the ball.

Um -
You only posted half of the NBA Draft Net bio, Blew. Out of fairness, here is the whole thing.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
wait a second
Memphis might be great at winning games in Conference USA, but they aren’t exactly a “fantastic program” for sending quality players to the NBA. Derrick Rose and Penny Hardaway are the only good players that I can ever remember coming from Memphis. Evans might be great too, but I don’t see him as any less of a risk than Rubio.
Everyone pretty much believes the tough Evans [from a fantastic program] will be a star.
Really? You mean nobody is questioning his ability to play PG, his shot, his basketball IQ, the need to have the ball in his hands (even though he may not be able to play PG), etc.? If there was a sure star in the draft at #4 the decision would already be made and the Kings staff wouldn’t be working so hard to work out 75% of the potential 1st-round picks.
This guy should be a King
Fact. I like him. Humble, hungry, determined and confident in his abilities. He wants to play. He wants to improve. He wants to lead and befriend his team mates. He may have shooting issues, but you can coach that. He may be a bit slow or too skinny, but Shapiro can sort that out (besides, he’s only 18! I was skinny at 18, and 9 years later I’m a brich shit-house, as they say here in the UK!). He has the talent to lead the team, and the willingness to improve on his deficiencies.
his buyout isn’t a concern for me. His agent is top notch, and he’s in the Nike family – surely it’s in their interests to get him playing… maybe they could cough up. I am more worried about him going before #4.
