One Kings source reiterated that the organization still has doubts about Rubio, and the visit did little to alleviate them. However, there is a split in the camps in Sacramento, with some pushing for Rubio or, if he's gone, Jrue Holiday. Others are pushing for Jonny Flynn and/or Tyreke Evans. ... Sources close to the situation continue to insist that, in the end, the most likely scenario is Rubio going to the Kings at No. 4 if he's still on the board. If he's gone, it sounds like Flynn has moved into second place.

so according to Chad Ford
clearly if Rubio is off the board it will definitely be Holiday, Flynn or Evans…

Still
It is disturbing if he’s correct that there’s no consensus, even if Ricky is in play. I’d like to avoid a Minnesota Vikings scenario where the team behind us gets to pick because we haven’t decided within the time limit.

yes, the point of the article is a lack of consensus
I’m sure thats due to a lot of things, questions about his athleticism and shooting and questions about his availability this year or maybe even next. Do you spend a #4 pick on a guy you won’t see in Uni until 2011?
Its a real problem.

Not disturbing at all
There’s still a week to go, and more player evaluations pending.
With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Rickeke Flynenningday, point guard from Europe, Memphis, Syracuse, UCLA and Parts Unknown.

But none of those guys is coming in for another workout, right?
Probably just a smokescreen anyway. I’d bet my bottom dollar that GP has defined his list for the #4 pick, and all that’s left is to explore trade possibilities.

Actually...
…if the Top 4 player in the draft are Griffin, Rubio, Thabeet, and Harden, as is the general consensus, and my personal belief, then the obviousness of the statement is not so apparent.
If the draft goes Griffin-Thabeet-Rubio, then we are left to choose between Harden or a bevy of PGs. Personally I say we snag the best player. I think the best player is Harden.
Hopefully, this all becomes mute, and OKC take Harden or Curry. Then we get our guy.

Rubio.....Adrenaline or Main Cause for Relocation-
I can see the Kings taking anyone BUT Rubio next Thursday, even if he is on the board.
One topic that I dont believe is getting as feared as it should be around here is Rubio’s contract dispute in Spain…That is going to be a H.U.G.E factor for the Kings officials-
As much of a shot of adrenaline for the City of Sacramento & Arco it would be if Rubio came to the Kings and was successful….It would be just as big of a deflation if we drafted him and he STAYED in Europe!!… If thats the case, the Sac community would completely abandon the Kings more so than they already have-

If he stays in Europe he won't be playing basketball until he gets his buyout taken care of.
His team is suspending him since he went into arbitration with them. Thus until his buyout is worked out he can stay over in Europe and sit on his couch or play videogames. He won’t be playing basketball ANYWHERE unless he gets his buyout handled. The odds of him staying over in Europe are extremely small at this point with the only possible scenario being he can’t get his buyout worked out and another Euroleague team is willing to just pay the entire thing.

Thanks
Thanks for shedding a bit of light on the topic for me-
As intriuged as I am by Rubio….. with this contract BS “in the air” I think its VERY risky for the Kings to take such an enigma…Especially with what it would do the Kings future in the 916 if the “worst case scenario” becomes a reality-
by Hoops916 on Jun 19, 2009 9:56 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Risky how?
If Rubio gets drafted by a team he wants to play for (Sacramento) then he comes over and signs huge endorsement deals. Anyone notice the Nike shirt he was wearing in his interview? Anyone think that was a coincidence?
The money for Ricky isn’t in his NBA contract. It’s in his commercial appeal. And there is no restriction on how much someone like McDonalds or Coke can pay toward his buyout. They can pay it all, and take it out of the $50M or so they are already planning to pay him.
The draft lottery has reinforced my belief that there are not enough bad words in the English language.

Well...
The whole thing sounds a bit shady… I really don’t give a damn where he gets his money from, be it; Nike, Gatorade, Supercuts…etc
Put it this way… If the Kings Brass is 100% sure that he’ll easily be able to pay the Spaniards and make his way over here by Training Camp, then GP MAY pull the trigger on this pick..(Remember, he’ll still be the only “stud” not to participate in drills…which, sickness aside, did not benefit the kids standing)
But if there is even a 1% chance that he wont be free to suit up for the Kings come Training Camp….there is NO way GP will make this pick-

Two things
First, Petrie picked Peja, who was still under contract with his Greek league team and couldn’t come over for two years.
Second, as long as he has the money to pay it, and there’s no doubt in my mind that he will, Joventut has to take it. They can’t turn it down.

Well...
The Kings (and the City of Sacramento) are in a completely different situation now than we were when Peja was picked….So thats somewhat of a moot point-
I dont think its “sunk-in” to everyone just how close the City is to losing our prized possession. ..IF (which may be a bif IF) this goes wrong.. you can kiss the Kings era in Sacramento good-bye…..Risky biz for an unproven 18 yr old who hasent so much as worked out for the team, isnt it?
I dont know the specifics of his contract (I dont think anybody really does) but what I do know is that the Maloofs wont gamble on taking a player who MAY have availiability issues.

Solid point man…
The only thing I can say to that is that I think the Kings and Sonics situations are a bit different…..If we can drag close to 17,317 butts back into the seats on a nightly basis I doubt we’ll be going anywhere-
Seattle was doomed before Durant, whereas the Kings (especially since KJ’s arrival) have a sliver of hope to remain assuming the team improves over the next year or two and interest increases-

Not so sure
If Petrie feels Rubio is the best player available at the #4, or feels Rubio is worth moving up to the #2 spot for, he will take him. Make no mistake about it, Rubio will be playing in the NBA at some point this coming season – he wants to be in the NBA, and doesn’t want to play another season in Europe.
This is gonna get ironed out, it’s just a matter of time. There may be some ugly moments, but it will get done.

on youtube, the less I feel good about him…the guy is a nattin’ traveling machine. Every time he gets to the basket to dunk he does a number of steps from 4 to 12.
He’s very athletic, but he has been playing in the Syracuse defense, so it’s like you have to start from zero with him.
I don’t see why pick him over Jennings, who can dunk as well, is flashy as well but has been one year in a full-time basketball school.

Jennings has become a great passer, you don’t have to watch his stats, cause assists are counted in a very different way in Europe. An “european assist” is when you get your mate to shoot directly and score; if your mate dribbles or stuff it doesn’t count as an assist

Shoot, which is the primary criteria for a Kings draft pick.

Reason # 1
Why people should take the time to check out College Basketball games during the year so that you have to rely on youtube to provide you background on a player!
A traveling machine?… are you serious?.. The college officials do a MUCH better job of calling traveling at the Collegiate level than the NBA refs do….If you think he travels all the time (btw your wrong) then he will get a “free-ride” in the NBA
by Hoops916 on Jun 19, 2009 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The fact that they usually don't call traveling
doesn’t mean that 4, 5, 6, 7 steps are not traveling. And the one time they call it, is sure as hell the turnover in the final minute of the fourth quarter of a close game.
Call me purist, but I don’t like very much a pg who can’t control his feet. I can understand Dwight Howard can’t do that, but hey, you’re a pg!
I don’t know if he travels only on highlights, but that’s what I saw. If we add that in Syracuse they don’t teach you defense at all, why should we take Flynn over a better skilled, maybe faster guy like Jennings?

Hmm...
I share your entusiasm for being a “purist” of the sport as well. (As is evident why im not enamored by our 2-Guard who plays no D & Can’t rebound or pass)..
But… to say you can judge the fundamental skill-set of a player by watching youtube is a bit premature, isnt it?…Simply put, I’m sure the fundamental chest-passes and screens he sets dont end up on youtube…I watched a handful of Cuse’ games this past year and i came away impressed by the way Flynn played the game.. And sure, Cuse’ plays a style of D that isnt historically known to carry over to the NBA, but thats not a sure-thing either. Just because Greene has horrible D doesnt mean that all Cuse’ players do. He’s got intangibles and physical attributes to develope into a REALLY good defender. He would be a sure-fire upgrade over Beno, no doubt in my mind..

Kiddin’, obviously.
I get your point, and I could be totally wrong about the guy. If Petrie selects him, I’ll stay with him without whining. I only pointed out that, in his youtube’s highlights (which are not a direct reflection of his game) he does a lot of traveling.

And the thousand year decision making process. I don’t see the Kings moving up because Petrie has been extraordinarily conservative about his moves over the last 5 years. The team clearly doesn’t believe in Rubio and feels like the other point guards at #4 are about equal. They don’t feel any urgency about moving up and Petrie sits on his hands, so they won’t.
by Carl on Jun 19, 2009 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't
think it’s a matter of the team believing in Rubio, or he being equal to other PGs. He just has too many question marks for them to take an additional risk (other than drafting him) by paying/trading to draft him at 2.
Fegan is dreaming, he’s trying to get his client paid to compensate for the buyout, while also getting him into a good situation. The Kings know that they offer a good situation to offer and they don’t need to pay for it at the same time.
