Great dispatch from Minnesota Pointguardapalooza
Tyreke Evans is a beast. Brandon Jennings stinks during drills ... and blows everyone away in the scrimmage.

Good read
Raises some questions on Jennings’ coachability…I’m not sure if I’m concerned or not. But I feel like I’m supposed to be.

I think we should consider
the fact that he has finished his season less than a month ago and he may be tired of this workouts (like Jerebko was in Treviso).
Anyway, it seems that he dominated the 3vs3 competition as he did (or said he did) in Sacramento.

What it says to me
Dominating the 3×3 competition tells me he’s a gifted player. Truly a natural talent on the basketball court. And that is awesome, because you cannot teach someone to have natural ability.
On the other hand, if he’s not following direction, that tells me there might be a coachability issue. Natural talent is great, but natural talent only takes you so far. At a certain point you need to be able to listen to your coach, and improve.
Personally, I’ve read a lot of stories about Jennings being a very coachable player in Italy, so that’s why I’m not completely scared off by this. But it is a bit of a flag. But we must remember, one workout is not always indicative of how a player will turn out.

The only thing it did for me
Is it will likely peg Flynn much higher on the board than people realize. I can definitely see the Kings trying to trade down and get an extra pick out of it to grab Flynn if they can. More so now than I did 3 days ago.

Agreed
He’ll probably be the next Iverson – incredibly talented, ball-hog-ish, prone to conflict, and unsuccessful in the playoffs – although AI did have some ok years. Yeah he was MVP but look at him now.

Wow, do you read that much into your horoscope too?
So based on that workout, you believe that Jennings will have some OK years, but be unsuccessful in the playoffs? Don’t you think you’re reading a bit much into that?
And what about that story (or anything you’ve ever read) would lead you to believe that Jennings is ball-hog-ish?
After beating Lawson with a stutter step, he picked up the ball and put it behind his back to avoid Evans’ help defense. Then he flicked a no-look over his shoulder to Jrue for the easy dunk. Onlookers collectively gasped.
That makes me excited. I’d love to see him do that in a Kings uni. Jennings is flashy, but so is another PG prospect in this draft that everyone drools over. There’s no reason to think that he’ll be a ball-hog.
I’m still somewhat undecided about Jennings, but there is so much unfair criticism of him around here, that I feel the need to defend him all the time.

It cleared up some things for me.
Those youtube clips of Evans taking on Rose in High School mean a lot. I’m leaning a little more towards Evans now but it seems like we’re gonna end up with either Evans, Rubio, or Flynn, so maybe I’m still confused.

Awesome write-up
This was definitely worth the read.
It definitely makes me a touch more worried about Jrue Holiday.
Picking Jennings would definitely be swinging for the fences. There’s a decent chance we’d absolutely whiff, but we’ve got to swing for the fences eventually. And Evans still sounds like he’ll be awesome if he really is a point guard, though that’s still a bit of an if.

I think the problem with Jennings isn't his coachability
its his need to show off. That’s what these draft workouts basically are. Maybe he is a little too cocky and arrogant at times, but so are the best players in the game. He’ll learn to listen, which he did while in Europe.

Jennings
Not following directions during drills is really baffling. I can see ignoring a particular move during scrimmage due to comfort.
by bignerd on Jun 19, 2009 3:20 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
My opinion is if a guy is not following direction on the court, it is because he is asked to do something he can’t do well, so he reverts to what he can do well. It is not that he doesn’t want to follow direction particularly, it is just that he is not very good at what he is being asked to do.
In defense of Jennings on a personal level, he did donate 50K to earthquake relief. He is a good guy.
Anyway, he won’t be our pick.

Here's a good dig
Holiday was the most dissapointing player of the group, by far . . . Maybe he was just tired, it is a Friday.

disappointing remark
and seemingly out of character… are we at the point that some of these guys think they know where they are going and don’t really care to impress the T-wolves brass? I wouldn’t think so, but who knows at this point.

Wow
Jonny Flynn, Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson, Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans and Jeff Teague
Nice group – would love to be a fly on the wall during that workout. I’ve been hoping for Rubio, followed by Evans and Jennings, but that read really makes Rubio/Evans a wash for me – I’d be pretty happy with either guy.
With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Rickeke Flynenningday, point guard from Europe, Memphis, Syracuse, UCLA and Parts Unknown.

I would add Flynn
He’s a tough six-footer. I think he’s the same height only stronger and has more hops than Chris Paul.

Yet again,
the guy with seemingly all the physical gifts is the one you can never quite get comfrotable with. These are often the ones the entire league and universe never get comfortable with. The oddity (or where I’m conflicted) is how well the reports suggest he handled not getting his way in Europe. Which is the truth?

That Evans should be number two behind Rubio.

Evans..............
Is totally the #2 on the draft board if it’s up to me……..but it’s not.

and the writer of this article said just that
Evans shined in one and one and drills, 3 on 3 he did well. He is a given as he scored A, A, and B.
Jennings on the other hand scored B, B- and A in the scrimmage.
Of course, the point is, the play that counts is 5 on 5 and that is an unknow. Given this article, Evans is the clear favorite – has the chance for stardom and he starts off with less worry. Jennings has the chance for perhaps greater, or just flashier stardom, with a bigger risk for bust.
Would you rather have Deron Williams or Devin Harris?

I'm not so sure
He’s a SG. He should of had his way with the PG’s under those drills and scrimmage conditions.

We're talking about Evans, right?
He measured 6’4" w/o shoes, & 6’ 5.25" w/shoes, He has a 6’ 11.25" wing span, and a 8’ 8" standing reach. I think he can play SG. Unless you take into consideration that he doesn’t shoot very well right now. But, that probably is he’s natural position.
I see him as a true combo guard, with a good chance of being Martin’s replacement. Until then he has the ballhandling skills and court vision to play the point. Certainly, Hedo filled the role and he’s not a PG.

Agreed
These were ideal conditions for Evans (and to a much lesser extent, Jennings too). Any 6’5" shooting guard worthy of 1st-round consideration should be able to smoke a group of much smaller point-guards in one-on-one and 3-on-3 drills. It sounds like Evans surely didn’t disappoint, but we really shouldn’t be too impressed by the fact that a bigger SG beat up on the little kids.

Practice... i mean, were talking about Practice...
Kings should draft Jennings if Rubio is not available! if he is as fast as we keep hearing, it will be fun to watch. That is all we need.

Yeah, I'm so confused...
I almost hope the idea that Minn would trade Love + #6 for Rubio is true, have Rubio fall to #4, trade #4 and #23 (so that we save money) for Love + #6, and take whoever we want there. Sigh, can’t wait for the draft. I’m going to leave work early to catch this one live for once.
by Bitgod on Jun 19, 2009 5:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Anxiety Greatly Diminished
I just realized that we are sitting just fine in this draft. The chances are excellent for tremendous value at #4 with some intriquing possibilities of trading down. But leave trading down aside for a moment and just contemplate the very real possibility of Rubio/Evans/Flynn, and I take them in that order based on availability. My fear of GP screwing this up is greatly diminished.

Gut feeling...
In a few years, Brandon Jennings is going to make the team’s that passed on him look bad. He has the athleticism and quickness you can’t teach. If he works on the jumper, he is going to be a nightmare to stop. I think the Tony Parker comparison is a good one.
Tyreke Evans is very interesting. He’s not as athletic as some people think, but he gets it done (obviously in part because of his length). I give lots of weight to his college accomplishments. When he took over at point, his squad won 22 straight, and he took his team pretty deep into the tournament even though it was a down year for Memphis. I think in the right system (see: Rondo, Rajon), he could be a great asset.
Flynn seems to be the safest pick, but the one with the least upside. Very hard call.
by R-Man on Jun 20, 2009 12:14 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Tony Parker /= Brandon Jennings
Tony Parker can’t pass the ball while Brandon Jennings can.
Tony Parker on his life would never ignore a coach’s instruction and Brandon Jennings ignores the coach during a simple basketball drill.
Court speed is all they have in common. Jennings sounds like he teetering on being a good NBA player or Stephon Marbury.
