There's no reason to think that more candidates would be added to the list that includes [Kurt] Rambis, Paul Westphal and Tom Thibodeau. And judging from the conversations I had tonight, I'd call it a close race between Westphal and Rambis with Thibodeau bringing up the rear. To be clear, that's more of a sense on my end than it is an indirect statement from anybody of relevance in this situation.

Good read
I’ll go on record as saying I’m ok with any of the 3, but Ellie and Porter as assistants for Westphal sounds pretty good to me.

Uhm
Ok, maybe I’m missing something…didn’t Sam already report a handshake deal between the team and Westphal? Wouldn’t that make Westphal the guy in the driver’s seat?
The handshake deal was on salary alone
they basically said “IF we offer you the job, THIS is the salary. Is that okay?”

I guess that makes sense
But discussing agreeable salaries during negotiations is pretty standard procedure…shaking someone’s hand on a salary agreement is closer to an offer of employment in my mind.
As good as coach as Thibodeau may be, I have heard him talk before and it’s hard to see him getting a head coach job based on how awkward and uncomfortable he came across. I know it shouldn’t matter, if the guy can coach, he can talk like Pee Wee Herman for all anyone should care. But I can’t see him blowing anyone away during his interviews. He’s someone I think an outside organization would have difficulty envisioning being the coaching face of their franchise.
I think the best shot he has to be a head coach is if the head coach gets fired during the season and he takes over as interim and does a good job. Sort like how Lawrence Frank got his job, although comparing the two as assistants, Thibodeau has a much bigger profile and one of the biggest in the league. There was no chance otherwise that Franks would have ever sniffed even an interview I can’t imagine.
True
but at the same time the record speaks for itself. He’s done a damn good job as an assistant and could probably do a great job at the next level. We should all be very aware that that’s more important than being charismatic or having a cool presentation for the interview.

Good article, thanks for the link
One point I have to disagree with is Amick’s notion that Westphal hasn’t fallen off the face of the NBA. Granted, I wasn’t aware that he had been a candidate for some of those jobs, so that was good info. But I think his inability to land any of those positions must say something, right?
Never forget: I am a complete idiot
What I don't understand
is that only two guys who meet the criteria GP set out were interviewed. Only one of those remains. Then two guys who do not meet the criteria have been interviewed. And this is the whole list? Not even going to kick the tires, maybe glean some interesting information, of any from a pretty high-quality group still out there that do meet the stated criteria?
Lower their expectations and rise to met them
