Memphis & The Rubio Situation
Important snippets:
- "The assumption is that Memphis will trade down a few spots, possibly to 4th, where Sacramento can offer either Jason Thompson or Spencer Hawes as added compensation."
- "There are some concerns that being selected fourth won’t cut it, and Rubio has already come out publicly in the Spanish media and stated that it’s not a foregone conclusion that he’ll be leaving Joventut this summer."
My take: I'd obviously really like to have Rubio, but Memphis better set its sights on something more like a trade of picks and Kenny Thomas' expiring contract.
I mean, Thompson or Hawes as "added compensation"!?! What the hell would be the point of that? In essence, we'd be trading one hole (at PG) for another (at 4 or 5). I think I'd prefer a package of Thompson and Holiday over a lone Rubio. Perhaps I would be willing to give up Hawes, but I really don't know. Tough call there, because the only remedy to that situation seems like a trade for Ty Chandler.
Now, if we could get Chandler to go w/ JT and Rubio, I'd give up Hawes, no problem...even if I prefer Hawes to Chandler straight-up.

I don't see giving up one of those pieces
I’d consider giving up Donte, but even that’s a stretch. Swapping K9 for Jaric makes sense for them. Maybe we send them #31 as well.

If they're giving up Gasol they'd probably want JT
Then again, it’s the Grizzlies. They did give up the better Gasol for Kwame Brown and some picks

Scratch that
Memphis would really have no choice but to do that. Hawes and Gasol have the exact same stats except Hawes is 3 years younger. It’d be quite a bit of an upgrade for them to do that trade. I’d even try to pry the #27 from them

No thanks
Gasol will be an unrestricted free agent in two years. It will be cheaper to retain Hawes.

Which doesn't mention Hawes is quite a bit younger

But once the opposing team learns of his distemper,
regardless of their game plan, won’t it always boil down to someone “suggesting a new strategy…let the Wookie win”?

won't they scrap their game plan and
“suggest a new strategy…let the Wookie win”?

If they do that
then OKC takes Thabeet. That’s why this sucks. They can’t trade down with the Kings assuming their guy will still be there, because he probably won’t be.
But OKC might be willing to take a risk on DeRozan panning out
Worst case scenario is that he’s a bust (which is the same worst case for Thabeet). Best case is he becomes really really great, way better than Thabeet will be. Either way they have Durant to fall back on so it seems likely they might take the risk

If DeRozan is the guy they want, then I retract that comment
I was assuming that Thabeet is the guy they want most.
As per usual with the NBA draft
rumors are flying about everybody. OKC’s been linked to Thabeet, Rubio, DeRozan, Hill, Harden, and even Curry. So take this all with a grain of salt.
