A source with knowledge of the situation said Rubio was visited in Los Angeles today by the Oklahoma City Thunder, who have the No. 3 pick in the June 25 draft. This matters mostly because Rubio's visit in Sacramento this week came with unspoken terms, an understanding of sorts that a Rubio promise on the Kings' part could have stopped his American tour with just one concert. But that clearly never happened, and certainly not only because Rubio was unable to get on the floor Thursday when he fell ill.

Go Kings!
This is a smokescreen
He was visiting the Clips on the sly, who plan to draft him and trade him for Sam Bowie and the corpse of Wilt Chamberlain.
Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.
Who cares
The Kings got all the pertinent information anyway.

You'll know when I do
I have no clue. What Sam did say is that it’s believed right now that Rubio will held back to Spain tomorrow though.

He probably isn't going to show up to the draft at all

I know right?
Why would Petrie freakin “promise” to pik him if this ould make him look like a fool in the end and make other teams want him more. Its better for the Kings to hype a variety of players and not look as though they have a hard on for want to draft Rubio at this point.
Sadly
he might’ve gotten a promise had he been able to work out. The problem, however, is that OKC or Memphis would probably still take him ahead of us.
www.mancancook.net
you can't promise what is out of your control
Even if there was a “promise” nothing would happen until June 25th…. now 4 days away but seems like 40.

I get the feeling that...
The Kings are going to pass on Rubio, even if he’s there at #4. John Stockton was 25 before he became a top-tier starting point guard. Steve Nash? 25. Mark Jackson was 22. Amick (or was it Ziller?) basically laid it out a few days ago. The Kings are worried about Rubio’s age, contract situation, ability to handle pressure and they’re probably not enamored with his jump shot. Geoff Petrie is anything but a risk-taker. I’m not particularly happy with this scenario, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Geoff Petrie IS a risk-taker
he evaluates talent well and can see when someone has it or not and if they’ll get better. If Petrie’s watched Rubio he knows whether or not he’ll be good in the future. You can’t say he doesn’t take risks. Hell, he took a big one last year and its paying off.
www.mancancook.net
He does evaluate talent well...
but I agree that he’s not one to take risks. We certainly didn’t take any risks in the Salmons/Miller deal, we took the (not assured) salary dump. Same thing for Bibby. We didn’t take any risks letting Beno walk and drafting a PG (Chalmers was there for the taking as Miami traded for him), we stuck with the guy we knew and now have the a bottom-5 starting PG making 6 million a year. Thompson was a risk, true, but it looks to me like similar-risk Anthony Randolph could be a better pro. We never trade up in the draft.
We basically wasted our 2008 2nd second round pick on a guy without any potential future in the NBA.
Petrie could be the basketball Brian Sabean IMO.
by discocricket on Jun 21, 2009 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah I Agree
NOT! I hope Petrie talks up Flynn and Curry and Evans because everyone knows he picks good players so if he favors Rubio too much everyone will know he’s Petrie’s choice and they’ll steel him from us.
Maybe they did make a promise
but told the Rubio camp to look like they didn’t.

I agree.
All of this secretive misdirection shit is awesome. This year we are getting so much behind the scene access that its dizzying. I guess this is the new NBA or at least the new Sacramento Kings. If you can’t put a good product on the floor, at least make the process as intriguing as possible.

This makes no sense
Even if the Kings made a promise to Rubio at 4, that would only mean he would not visit with any other teams who had lower draft picks. There’s no reason he wouldn’t want to be drafted even higher and to earn himself a bigger contract. Every dollar will count for him since he is paying for his buy out.
If he got a promise from Sac
he wouldn’t visit anywhere in the hopes that OKC and Memphis would let him drop
www.mancancook.net
Anyone else think its a good thing for us
that OKC had to go visit Rubio but he came to see us?
Father of the "Natt this!" movement.
Not really.
He’s sick, and there are no direct flights from OKC to Barcelona.
But it does mean that he just had a conversation. No workout, no physical, no tour of the facilities.
And who knows what kind of things Fegan said to them in that conversation.

He wouldve, had he gotten a promise from us...
I wonder why they didnt tell him we’d draft him at the 4 spot? That wouldve almost guaranteed we got him.
"It would be my honor to be your new stepfather."
by PhutureKings on Jun 21, 2009 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions
Because we can't guarantee bullshit
Perhaps the promise was that if Memphis or OKC picked him we’d do whatever necessary to get him. Which we absolutely should not promise. I don’t doubt we take him if he’s available at 4, but we shouldn’t sell our kidneys for him.
Father of the "Natt this!" movement.
Not a bad selection to choose from.
Curry is my least favorite but I’ll live if he’s picked.
RR Evans Flynn Curry in that order are my preference if those are the only 4 in contention.
Father of the "Natt this!" movement.
I'm perfectly okay with it
I still just hope its Rubio
where was this reported at?
www.mancancook.net
Curry?
Do we have that big of a need for a diminutive, backup SG? Calling yourself a PG on a team with zero talent in college doesn’t mean you are an NBA PG. Even if he can play the NBA PG, the back court of Martin and Curry has to be the worst defensive NBA back court ever conceived. Both better combine for 90 points each night cause the Kings will have score in the 125 point range to get wins.
Nice video interview with Curry too
Personally, I love the kid. He’s polite and humble (says “sir” a lot). I’ve listened to his interviews with Dan Patrick and he’s got a great head on his shoulders and a real feel for the game. Plus, the way his attitude and demeanor are tells me he’ll be really coachable as well.
www.mancancook.net
He's traveled up on my personal board lately too
But I would still prefer Flynn, Evans and Rubio. Evans would be a mismatch nightmare, and he could run the offense. If he keeps beating the other teams point guard (which he showed he can do easily at the Minnesota workout) through his strength and size, other teams might have to stick their best defenders on him. But oh wait, we have Kevin Martin too.
Flynn has a bunch of upside. I’ve been very surprised to hear how good of a defender he is. And he’s also proven to be a very good floor leader. Poor man’s CP3? Maybe. Probably not, but he has that potential.
Rubio. We all know what we like about Rubio. Right now the only way we get him though is if Memphis and OKC take a pass. I doubt we’ll trade up. I also doubt Memphis and OKC both pass. Of the two, Memphis has the most chance to pass in my opinion and OKC will only pass if they really like Harden.
Father of the "Natt this!" movement.
Those 4 look great in my eyes too
Flynn’s been my least liked but apparently he’s a great defender and great leader. Did Donte play with him at Syracuse? I wonder if Flynn running the point has a positive effect on Greene?
www.mancancook.net
I love him in the late teens
not with our highest pick since what, 1989?
by discocricket on Jun 21, 2009 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions
Curry won't drop past 7.
He definitely deserves to be in consideration at #4. That being said, I don’t want him at number 4, ahead of Evans, Flynn, or Rubio. I rate Jennings higher than him too, but I think he might regain some of his old attitude issues being back in the states.
Father of the "Natt this!" movement.
Well this could be fun to see
… Thabeet and a bunch of PGs … Amick updated his blog.
BLOG UPDATE: Quick disclaimer, UConn’s Hasheem Thabeet gets a look if he is unexpectedly there as well.

I do too
But I don’t think he’ll be there for us to take. Memphis and OKC would be able to get some value for him somewhere. I still think Memphis should draft Thabeet and OKC should draft Harden but Rubio is the potential superstar.
Father of the "Natt this!" movement.
This is BRILLIANT
The Kings are LEGITIMATELY downplaying Rubio, thus raising up Red Flags for other teams. Why would a team, blow the SOCKS off the Thunder or Grizzlies here to trade up? THe Kigns aren’t offering much, so that makes the other offers less likely to be GREAT offers that the Grizz and Thunder can’t refuse.
I seriously don’t see the Grizz taking him, and I don’t think the Thunder will(although, that’s the major hang up) IMO. The only team that has a LEGITIMATE shot to trade up to nab him, IMO is Minnesota, but I don’t see them offering up a legitimate package to grab him.
I truly believe by ‘looking elsewehere’ the Kings are setting themselves up to get Rubio at #4, without losing any assets, getting him at a cheaper cost and with his buy out getting lowered here soon, I believe he’s more willing to take the #4 salary too.
It’s interesting that these ‘reports’ from these ‘sources’ are coming out AFTER Fegan and Petrie/Levian had time to meet face to face for a plan of action. It’s obvious Fegan wants Rubio in Sacramento, and it’s obvious that he fits SEEMLESSLY in Sacramento.
This is total smokescreen by the Kings to drum down offers from OTHER teams more willing to trade up.
Thabeet and Harden go 2/3 in some order. Kings nab Rubio at #4.
If the Thunder do the unthinkable and nab Rubio, then the Kings will trade down to Toronto or NY IMO to nab Flynn there and let Toronto or NY nab their choice of Curry/DeRozan.
How funny would this all be
if the Clippers decided to fuck it all up and take Rubio?

Wouldn't mess much up IMO...
Clips – Rubio
Griz – Griffin
Thunder – Thabeet/Harden
Kings – Flynn/Curry/Evans
Wouldn’t be much different honestly if Memphis decides to play “hardball” with Rubio.
