Thursday. Our entire year has led us up to this day. All the grief we went through this entire season was for this moment. All the speculation and tribulation will end. We will finally know the direction our team is heading in. Things have gotten tense in the past few weeks, especially after we got the #4 pick. We've all debated back and forth about who we're going to pick, who we'll trade for, who we should sign. It's basically come down to Rubio, Evans, Flynn and Curry. So I've decided to stop worrying.
We're going to be fine. Here's why.
"And with the 4th pick in the NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Ricky Rubio of Spain"
Most of us have hoped for this ever since we saw those first youtube videos, posted throughout various threads. Typing Ricky Rubio into our search bar shows 63 stories, 151 fanposts, 114 fanshots, and 3,414 comments. I myself have pined for Rubio's stardom. Ricky will bring back memories of '98 and the resurgent Kings. His no-look behind the back passes will make our brains turn to mush. He'll need room to grow, but he'll have it with us. And for a year or two, all we'll need are those glimpses to keep us watching. The casual fan will have a reason to come back into ARCO and rock the house. Kids in Spain will be wearing #9 Sacramento Jerseys (K-9 Woof! will have to find something else)and watching Ricky, and we'll know "That's our guy!"
"And with the 4th pick in the NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Tyreke Evans of the University of Memphis"
Tyreke is a matchup nightmare. On offense, he's shown that standard point guards simply can't guard him, since he's too strong and tall. Other teams won't be able to switch off their shooting guard on him either, since they can't afford to give Kevin Martin any less pressure, and if they do, Kevin will make them pay. Tyreke also flourished in Memphis last season when he transitioned to the point, and he can find the open man. On Defense, his size and wingspan should also create a significant matchup problem. With Kevin and Tyreke we'll put teams in foul trouble faster than Peaches can say "Put that in the bucket and send him to the line! OH BOY!"
"And with the 4th pick in the NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Jonny Flynn of Syracuse University"
Jonny has shown he can be the leader we need. He can create for his teammates and also step up and fill up the basket when need be. Whatever Coach Westphal needs him to do will be his priority. He'll lead by example. Syracuse is notorious for playing a zone and not letting their players shine at the defensive end, but Flynn has shown in his workouts that he is one of the best defending points in this draft. Flynn will put this team on his back and will us to get better. He truly is a General. CP3 2.0? How about Jonny Flynn 1.0.
"And with the 4th pick in the NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Stephen Curry of Davidson College"
Nobody in this draft can shoot or score like Curry. We will have one of the most efficient scoring backcourts in all of the NBA. Sure our defense back here will be a little suspect, but a point guard is not going to solve the Kings defensive problems. Curry had to carry the load this year at Davidson, and even with his increase in scoring, he upped his assists by a lot as well. He'll be able to draw double teams and punish teams by finding the open man. No longer will opposing defenses be able to focus their sole attention on Kevin Martin.
We got one of the best talent evaluators in the League at the helm of this battleship. We can argue pros and cons and everything else, but what good is that going to do us? We have no control over what happens Thursday, no matter how much we might want to. The best we can do is accept what happens and make the best of it. So come Thursday, if that guy you want is available at #4, and we don't pick him, just remember, don't worry. Be Happy.
Now for you're further pleasure, here's a group of avid Kings fans* singing Don't Worry Be Happy. Pookeyguru makes an appearance at 1:22 while Section214 makes his YouTube debut at 2:45. Exhibit G has a minor role at 4:13.
*subjects may or may not have sung this song at a time before the Sacramento Kings existed, based on studies by several Hairstylists, but it is likely they would have been avid Kings fans, says a study by the Institute of Me.
