With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Rickeke Flynenningday, point guard from Europe, Memphis, Syracuse, UCLA and Parts Unknown.

and they threw in this nugget-
Rubio reportedly has made progress on lowering his buyout to $4 million, still a hefty cost, but he also reportedly could be allowed to make payments over several years.

I’m confused why the team would need an attorney for this particular situation. From even this report, the contract situation is all but taken care of.

That confuses me too

But I’m not an attorney.

I'm not either but I slept next to one last night...actually every night.

Law firms are going to want a huge retainer for something like this. If this is new news then its bad news for those of us dreaming of Rubio. The in-house counsel for OKC should have been able to hash through most of this while looking at legal precedence and such.

Again,

Spain is civil code, not common law.

Precedence is but a mere factor to consider for those judges, not binding authority like it is here.

Still, they have to go off of something.

They can’t possibly take each case individually and make pure individual judgements.

Believe me, you don't need to be an attorney to work this out.

There are three reasons for OKC to hire a firm: (1) to verify that the contract situation is in fact “all but taken care of”; (2) to assess the degree to which drafting Rubio (whether for their team or merely for trade bait) would be sensible; and (3) to fuck with everyone’s minds.

The decision to hire a Spanish firm was a prudent one, regardless of whether it was made before or after OKC examined Rubio’s contract. None of this means mean they’re getting Rubio, and it doesn’t mean we’re not getting Rubio; it just means OKC’s brass isn’t stupid.

"SHOULD they draft Spanish guard Ricky Rubio"?

WHEN they do. Why the crap would they hire the firm NOW if they aren’t planning on picking him? That’d be the ultimate smokescreen, though. Damn draft.

If Rubio is gone, gimme Evans. There are more Rondo rumors; I’d love to deal Martin for Rondo and have a Rondo/Evans backcourt.

The posturing from spots 2-4 is going to continue

Don’t be surprised by any of this crap that floats around the last few days before the draft. We are going to hear a lot of weird crap the next few days, teams are going to do everything possible to boost the value of their pick. It is just smart business.

by TheRaven on Jun 23, 2009 2:58 PM PDT reply actions

This is really odd

unless they are trying to get it lowered further which could be part of a promise with Fegan

But it seems odd that they’d do it before the draft and reveal their hand. Anyone think Presti’s just trying to up the ante in the smokescreen department?

Trickery, Dickory, Dock...

Its a trick….“word on the streets” is that teams are trying to squeeze Petrie for the #4 and #23 pick for moving up in the draft. Question is will Petrie, blink? My feeling is no because his Rubio back up guy is the guy he really wants anyways. If Rubio is still there at #4, than Petrie will reconsider, especially if his #1 guy is off the board.

by theinsider on Jun 23, 2009 3:20 PM PDT reply actions

What street is that word on Insider?

If all it takes is the #23 for the Kings to guarantee Rubio then I believe it is a done deal. I think the Kings play this down to the pick and if they have to make the trade if either Memphis or OKC draft Rubio then they do it.

Seriously

If all OKC or Memphis wants for Rubio is both of our picks they can have them. Hell, if its Memphis that wants both picks we could probably get away with giving them the #31 which is basically a first rounder but with a better contract situation for the Grizzlies

...Armchair GM

Its Arena Blvd, jjham! Not so sure that Petrie is willing to part with another pick for Rubio. A guy who I will call (Jerry R.) is in the loop and makes me think Kings are not totally sold on Rubio. That’s not to say the Kings aren’t playing down their interest on the kid from Spain to not seem to eager, but something tells me that considerations for the number 4 pick go beyond one unproven 17 year old kid. We’ll know for sure on Thursday.

by theinsider on Jun 23, 2009 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Rumors have swirled about the Kings selling off the pick...

Giving it to Memphis to move up is practically the same thing. I’m not saying you don’t have an in, I was wondering where you were getting your info because it hasn’t been floating out there. Memphis was also rumored to be selling off their second 1st rounder so I’m wondering why they would be hot on the Kings pick @ #23. And I like Jerry Reynolds, but he wouldn’t still have a job if he let things slip like who the Kings would draft at #4 to you, Chad “The Tool” Ford or the dude at Der Weinerschnitzel.

jjham reply

I never said Jerry Reynolds told me that. I am judging by his interview this morning on the Rise Guys. I do know that Memphis was seeking a couple of picks for their #2. As we get closer, developments point to that being more of a possibility by Minnesota’s actions. I don’t know what Petrie is thinking, I don’t think Jerry Reynolds does either. My gut tells me that Evans is who the Kings really want, but maybe Minnesota is eyeing him as well.

Sam Presti is too shrewd

To just let Rubio fall past the Thunder without squeezing any value out of him.

Question: If the draft goes Griff, THABEET, Rubio, do we pick Harden? Almost certainly not. Does Washington? I say no again. So then the T-Wolves are up and Harden is still on the board. Minny’s new GM David Kahn has already said that he wants to make a splash by moving up. They have such a gaping hole at PG that they were starting Kevin Ollie by the end of last season, so it’s safe to assume that Rubio is one of the guys that they’re targeting. So Presti calls up this new guy (who Bill Simmons has already deemed a pushover, though I’m not sure why) and offers Rubio for the small price of Harden, Brian Cardinal for Nick Collison, and the 18th pick for the 25th pick. Kahn’s gotten his guy for basically nothing, Presti’s gotten his guy at about $1.5M per season less than he would’ve paid him at the #3 spot, moved up 7 spots in the first round, and saved almost $7M in 2010 Nick Collison salary. And Ricky’s happy because he avoided the Grizz, will have the opportunity to start immediately, and is getting third pick money. And all the better if the Wolves get the 5th pick, that just takes the potential complication of Washington taking Harden out of the picture.
