Rubio may be about to come off the board. Don't be shocked if Minn. packages 5 and 6 for No. 2 from Memphis.

New T-Wolves GM David Kahn promised to make a splash - http://bit.ly/18WlRj - and I'm told it's Rubio if Griz comply and give up # 2.

Sam Amick, via Twitter

Wiz traded the number 5 to Minnesota. Minnesota has the 5th and 6th pick, which they could package to move up to 2.

I thought the deal to pick up the #5 was good for Minny

Now watch them undo the whole thing by pulling the trigger on this stupid deal. I would rather have two prospects at #5 and #6 than any one player in this draft not named Blake Griffin.

Kahn wants to "make a splash"

He’s been promising it since he ousted McHale. In the PR department it’s an accomplishment, but I agree that you could probably do pretty damn good with #5 and #6 with your rebuilding efforts.

by Exhibit G on Jun 23, 2009 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I just thought of that...

The Wolves could potentially nab 2 of Thabeet/Curry/Evans/Harden/Flynn/Jennings if they just held onto both picks.

by Smills91 on Jun 23, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

It'll be more than a splash

if the #2 pick spits the bit while one or both of the 5-6 picks pan out. More like a monsoon.

True

Just remember

When the whole draft process started, a lot of folks (not just here) viewed this as two players and then a huge dropoff. Those two players were Griffin and Rubio. Now, if you didn’t let any of the workouts and rumors sway your opinion, you could view this as trading two second-tier picks for a top-tier pick.

That's an excellent point -

if we were making the deal.

It is...

It is a good point, but do we really feel that way now? I don’t consider Rubio a tier above say, Evans. His star power and put butts in the seats power is probably 2 tiers above any of them but that is different than playing ability.

by OrangeLazarus on Jun 23, 2009 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions

If Khan goes through with this

Minnesotans will soon be pining for the good ol’ McHale days.

by thelettere on Jun 23, 2009 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Couldn't agree more

With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Rickeke Flynenningday, point guard from Europe, Memphis, Syracuse, UCLA and Parts Unknown.

by otis29 on Jun 23, 2009 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Welcome To Minnesota, Ricky

Memphis will be ALL OVER moving that pick for the #5 and #6 picks. Memphis nees a lot of help, and they can use those picks or trade. The sacramento Rubiofest ends with this move.

by PurplePurple on Jun 23, 2009 5:12 PM PDT reply actions

Ridiculous

if Kahn does this. How can he think that Rubio is better than Flynn by a factor of Harden without ever working him out?

by furious.d on Jun 23, 2009 5:19 PM PDT reply actions   2 recs

Well....

Minnesota hasn’t offered this deal yet, but there’s no way Memphis rejects it if they do. Memphis could select two young studs, trade one, lots of options.

by PurplePurple on Jun 23, 2009 5:20 PM PDT reply actions

This would solve a lot of problems for Memphis

With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Rickeke Flynenningday, point guard from Europe, Memphis, Syracuse, UCLA and Parts Unknown.

by otis29 on Jun 23, 2009 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

There goes Rubio

Time will tell if this is a good move for MN. They are giving up a lot of assets and taking on more salary to get him. If Rubio is Nash, then it’s a great move. If Rubio is the next Brevin Knight (good passing and D, no jumper), then this will be a tough pill to sallow for their fans. Khan really is staking his reputation to Rubio’s at this point.

by SPTSJUNKIE on Jun 23, 2009 5:23 PM PDT reply actions

Ballsy move though...

Gotta like that the Wolves are taking chances, if you’re a Minnesota fan. Whcih you’re not….but still.

by PurplePurple on Jun 23, 2009 5:25 PM PDT reply actions

Rather than trade both #5 and #6, leaving them with no picks

My guess is Kevin Love and #5 for #2. That gives them #2 (Rubio or Thabeet) and #6 (whoever’s left of Evans/Harden).

by nbrans on Jun 23, 2009 5:27 PM PDT reply actions

Love

I forget where I read it, so it obviously carries less weight, but I heard Minny was balking at including Love

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

by Exhibit G on Jun 23, 2009 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Also

Think of it this way . . . if they take Rubio, then there’s no other BIG to speak of in this draft.

Love ?? Evans
Love ?? Harden

If Kevin Love was in this draft, he’d be in the Top 3.

In my opinion:
5 & 6 < Love & 5/6

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

But they already have Jefferson

Jefferson and Love are basically identical players and they can’t really play at the same time because neither one is a center. I think they could give up Love to balance their roster.

  1. and Love for #2 may be too much, though, I agree with you there.

by nbrans on Jun 23, 2009 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps...

Although I don’t think that trading a big without having another big to replace him is a good plan.

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 5:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Ah

I think in this scenario they would take Thabeet #2 rather than Rubio.

by nbrans on Jun 23, 2009 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions

In that case...
Thabeet > Love

By a factor of a Top 6 pick?

If Minny thinks so, then you might be in for some bad news when Rubio still falls to #4 (unless they can convince Presti to trade #3 for #5/#6 & #18 . . . wouldn’t that be something).

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I already agree

That #5 and Love for #2 is too much. Maybe #18 and Love for #2 or something along those lines.

by nbrans on Jun 23, 2009 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow

That would be a steal of a deal for Minny (assuming they think Thabeet is an upgrade – or better frontcourt partner for Jefferson), because they’d still have the 5 & 6 picks to fill their backcourt in a guard-heavy draft. Or they then overpay and package 5 & 6 if they still think Rubio is worth the hype and get back another later pick with #3 from Presti (#5 & #6 & #3 & #25?).

I even think this is a pretty good deal for Memphis because they don’t have an Al Jefferson blocking Love’s way, and they’d probably take him at #2 if he were in this draft anyway. Presti would happily trade #3 for #5 & #6 because Harden will most likely still be there, plus he gets another player as well.

Ok, that just depressed me . . . so I’m going to go lay down.

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah. Let's say Minny trades love and ends up with #2, #5 and #6

I think they go Thabeet, Curry and Evans/Harden

Curry
Evans
?
Jefferson
Thabeet

Not a bad start.

by nbrans on Jun 23, 2009 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Gomes/Brewer

Both play the 3, and that’s what I’m saying.

“Big Splash” indeed.

Even if they overpaid to get Rubio, swingmen are the easiest position to fill.

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Way too much.

Love would be a top 5 pick in this draft, easily, perhaps even the 2nd pick.

by cabz on Jun 23, 2009 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

They don't even have to package #5 and #6...

Trading both of those just to move up 3 spots is actually massively overpaying in this draft. I think even just #5 + #18 + another pick could be enough. They could end up with Rubio + Thabeet, which makes for a nice young core. Eventually they could trade one of Jefferson/Love for another very good young player depending on what needs are most pressing.

Anyway, I am not going to cry over this. If Rubio goes, Rubio goes. Stick to taking the best player on the board, which probably is Evans. Hope for John Wall or one of the good bigs next year.

by TheRaven on Jun 23, 2009 5:29 PM PDT reply actions

The wolves have the #5, #6, #18 and #28 to barter with. I wouldn’t be shocked if they could get something done for #5 + #18 for #2

by Ebomb on Jun 23, 2009 5:29 PM PDT reply actions

That makes much more sense

SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!

by section214 on Jun 23, 2009 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Very true

Although 4 players get picked between #18 and #23. And who knows if this even interests Memphis, they already own #27 I believe.

by Ebomb on Jun 23, 2009 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Interesting point

That could be the counter-offer to get #5 & #6 from Minny.

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Kings could offer...

4 and 23 at that juncture…I don’t see why the Wolves offer would be better…as that extra player(Tyreke Evans or Thabeet is probably worth more than the drop-off from 18-23.

by Smills91 on Jun 23, 2009 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Meh

if the Wolves do that, they’re dumb IMO. They need a lot of help. Getting a Curry and Evans would help them more.

But if they do go get Rubio …. more power to them. Let’s get the Evans or Flynn jersey ready for print.

Booyah!

by Dub_TC on Jun 23, 2009 5:33 PM PDT reply actions

Question (to put things into perspective)

If for some reason (e.g. Griffin/Thabeet/Harden) Rubio still falls to #4, who here trades him for #6 & #18?

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 5:37 PM PDT reply actions

Not I, but I love my fish tacos.

He really has the greatest upside (oh god I have read too much draft info) out of any of the prospects. If Evans becomes a star in the league its as a SG not a PG. Flynn is a solid pick at #6 and if you can move into the lottery with #18 and #23 to pick a guy like Terrence Williams that would be great. I just feel that we need stars and Rubio has the best possibility of filling a need and becoming a star (best of both worlds).

There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru

by moproblemz on Jun 23, 2009 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

That's my point

If Rubio > #6 & #18, then Memphis may be pushing for #5 & #6, which would be a GREAT deal for them.

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Again

If it’s 5/6 & Kevin Love (or even 5 & 6), Memphis takes the deal and runs.

The question is whether Rubio is worth more or less than 5/6 & 18.

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

No

Once you get past some of these guys there’s not much difference between 18 and 23, or even later picks

www.mancancook.net

by vfettke on Jun 23, 2009 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Right

And that’s what I was getting at in the first place.

5 & 6 (or either plus Kevin Love) may sound like overpaying, but the alternative would be to underpay and/or not trade at all.

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Minnesota will probably have to move some move eventually

After this trade, they have 8 big man (Jefferson, Love, Smith, Thomas, Songaila, Pecherov, Madsen and Cardinal) while theonly other players are Brewer (injured yet?), Telfair (hmmm) and Ryan Gomes (I don’t know about Bobby Brown)

by KingsFanfromCentralEurope on Jun 23, 2009 5:45 PM PDT reply actions

Minnesota makes a strong play for John Wall in 2010.

And whoever else is available in the lottery for the next half decade.

by Deleran on Jun 23, 2009 5:48 PM PDT reply actions

Optimistic?

Maybe i’m just being optimistic as well but since Minny just traded their PG/SG and SG/SF I don’t see them combining the picks to move up. At 5 and 6 they could end up with Evans and Curry and their roster would be better filled out. Unless Memphis does a 6 & 16 for 2 swap I still think we land Ricky.

by Doubl3Dos3 on Jun 23, 2009 6:32 PM PDT reply actions

A team comprised of

Curry
Evans
whoever their SF is
Love
Jefferson

that’s a scary young team. They’d be insane to just trade those two for Rubio. If we had the 4 and the 5 or the 4 and the 6 and Petrie traded up for Rubio I’d be pissed too.

www.mancancook.net

by vfettke on Jun 23, 2009 6:34 PM PDT reply actions

Yup

Exactly. That’s why that’s not happening. The only think I’m afraid of is one of their picks and 16. But then I think if Memphis is planning on trading down they want Evans or Thabeet who won’t be there if Rubio goes 2 and Thabeet goes to OK.

by Doubl3Dos3 on Jun 23, 2009 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

So they take Evans

At this point I’d take Evans at 4, and package him with #23 and Donte for Rubio. That’s the most I’m willing to give up.

www.mancancook.net

by vfettke on Jun 23, 2009 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

If I were Memphis

and you offered me #23 and Donte for #2 Rubio, I’d hang up and never talk to you again. You forget that most of the league (i.e. all other 29 teams except perhaps Houston) view Donte differently than we do.

by Aykis16 on Jun 24, 2009 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Unless a deal is already done...

I don’t think Minnesota has their eyes on the #2 pick. Why would you make a trade for a big asset like the #5 pick only to hope that you can trade one of your top-6 picks and change for #2?

by cabz on Jun 23, 2009 7:05 PM PDT reply actions

Huh?
Why would you make a trade for a big asset like the #5 pick only to hope that you can trade one of your top-6 picks and change for #2?

Because it has value either way?

I don’t see how acquiring #5 excludes the possibility of acquiring #2.

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

You misread my comment, I think.

Acquiring #5 does not exclude anything. Acquiring #5 in the hope of trading for #2 (hope, and not certainty, as in not yet having a deal agreed to in principle beforehand) just seems silly.

by cabz on Jun 23, 2009 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

Because then the backup plan to getting #2 is that you still have two really great picks

www.mancancook.net

by vfettke on Jun 23, 2009 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Right

Isn’t that what I said?

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps.

But when trading for a draft pick two days before the draft I assume most teams would value it based on who they think is available at that spot, not a what-if scenario in which the interest of the other party is unconfirmed. Call me crazy, but I just don’t believe most GMs would leave something like that to chance (then again, we’re talking about Wallace and a replacement for McHale that has not yet had a chance to establish his sanity, or lack of).

by cabz on Jun 23, 2009 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Still...

There are going to be good guards available at #4 no matter who goes at #2 and #3. Petrie will not and should not blink…

I have calmed myself
