Rubio may be about to come off the board. Don't be shocked if Minn. packages 5 and 6 for No. 2 from Memphis.
New T-Wolves GM David Kahn promised to make a splash - http://bit.ly/18WlRj - and I'm told it's Rubio if Griz comply and give up # 2.
Sam Amick, via Twitter
Wiz traded the number 5 to Minnesota. Minnesota has the 5th and 6th pick, which they could package to move up to 2.

I thought the deal to pick up the #5 was good for Minny
Now watch them undo the whole thing by pulling the trigger on this stupid deal. I would rather have two prospects at #5 and #6 than any one player in this draft not named Blake Griffin.

Kahn wants to "make a splash"
He’s been promising it since he ousted McHale. In the PR department it’s an accomplishment, but I agree that you could probably do pretty damn good with #5 and #6 with your rebuilding efforts.

Yeah, I just thought of that...
The Wolves could potentially nab 2 of Thabeet/Curry/Evans/Harden/Flynn/Jennings if they just held onto both picks.

I think with the guys they have right now adding two guys like Curry and Evans who will contribute right away is the right move. They’ll be contending much sooner and for a longer period. I don’t really put much stock in Simmons’ opinions unless he’s talking about MLB, to be honest. I listened to the podcast where he filled in his NCAA bracket. He admitted he hadn’t been following college basketball much at all. I haven’t seen/heard anything since then to make me believe he’s an authority on evaluating this draft’s talent.
I happen to like pithy remarks and 80s references, so I have no problem with the guy.

When the whole draft process started, a lot of folks (not just here) viewed this as two players and then a huge dropoff. Those two players were Griffin and Rubio. There goes Rubio
Time will tell if this is a good move for MN. They are giving up a lot of assets and taking on more salary to get him. If Rubio is Nash, then it’s a great move. If Rubio is the next Brevin Knight (good passing and D, no jumper), then this will be a tough pill to sallow for their fans. Khan really is staking his reputation to Rubio’s at this point.

Rather than trade both #5 and #6, leaving them with no picks
My guess is Kevin Love and #5 for #2. That gives them #2 (Rubio or Thabeet) and #6 (whoever’s left of Evans/Harden).

Also
Think of it this way . . . if they take Rubio, then there’s no other BIG to speak of in this draft.
Love ?? Evans
Love ?? Harden
If Kevin Love was in this draft, he’d be in the Top 3.
In my opinion:
5 & 6 < Love & 5/6

Jefferson and Love are basically identical players and they can’t really play at the same time because neither one is a center. I think they could give up Love to balance their roster.

by nbrans on Jun 23, 2009 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
In that case...
Thabeet > Love
By a factor of a Top 6 pick?
If Minny thinks so, then you might be in for some bad news when Rubio still falls to #4 (unless they can convince Presti to trade #3 for #5/#6 & #18 . . . wouldn’t that be something).
by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I already agree
That #5 and Love for #2 is too much. Maybe #18 and Love for #2 or something along those lines.
by nbrans on Jun 23, 2009 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow
That would be a steal of a deal for Minny (assuming they think Thabeet is an upgrade – or better frontcourt partner for Jefferson), because they’d still have the 5 & 6 picks to fill their backcourt in a guard-heavy draft. Or they then overpay and package 5 & 6 if they still think Rubio is worth the hype and get back another later pick with #3 from Presti (#5 & #6 & #3 & #25?).
I even think this is a pretty good deal for Memphis because they don’t have an Al Jefferson blocking Love’s way, and they’d probably take him at #2 if he were in this draft anyway. Presti would happily trade #3 for #5 & #6 because Harden will most likely still be there, plus he gets another player as well.
Ok, that just depressed me . . . so I’m going to go lay down.

Love and the #6 for the #2?
by misterbrister on Jun 23, 2009 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Way too much.
Love would be a top 5 pick in this draft, easily, perhaps even the 2nd pick.
by cabz on Jun 23, 2009 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
They don't even have to package #5 and #6...
Trading both of those just to move up 3 spots is actually massively overpaying in this draft. I think even just #5 + #18 + another pick could be enough. They could end up with Rubio + Thabeet, which makes for a nice young core. Eventually they could trade one of Jefferson/Love for another very good young player depending on what needs are most pressing.
Anyway, I am not going to cry over this. If Rubio goes, Rubio goes. Stick to taking the best player on the board, which probably is Evans. Hope for John Wall or one of the good bigs next year.

by smgmatt on Jun 23, 2009 5:37 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not I, but I love my fish tacos.
He really has the greatest upside (oh god I have read too much draft info) out of any of the prospects. If Evans becomes a star in the league its as a SG not a PG. Flynn is a solid pick at #6 and if you can move into the lottery with #18 and #23 to pick a guy like Terrence Williams that would be great. I just feel that we need stars and Rubio has the best possibility of filling a need and becoming a star (best of both worlds).

Maybe i’m just being optimistic as well but since Minny just traded their PG/SG and SG/SF I don’t see them combining the picks to move up. Curry

You misread my comment, I think.
Acquiring #5 does not exclude anything. Acquiring #5 in the hope of trading for #2 (hope, and not certainty, as in not yet having a deal agreed to in principle beforehand) just seems silly.

www.mancancook.net

Perhaps.
But when trading for a draft pick two days before the draft I assume most teams would value it based on who they think is available at that spot, not a what-if scenario in which the interest of the other party is unconfirmed. Call me crazy, but I just don’t believe most GMs would leave something like that to chance (then again, we’re talking about Wallace and a replacement for McHale that has not yet had a chance to establish his sanity, or lack of).
