is ricky rubio a good defender or not??
i've been reading some article about rubio and have seen that others tend to overrate his defense mainly because of his stealing ability.
People always tend to misunderstand or often have the misconception that a player who is good or excel in the steals department is also a good defender. dont get me wrong ok, i dont discredit the degree of difficulty of stealing, especially here in the NBA, but, being a good defender should not be limited to how good a player steals or blocks. To justify my statement, I'll compare Ron Artest's steal stats and chris paul's steal stats. Chris Paul is the steals leader this season with 2.8 a game while Ron Artest only averages only 1.5 a game. But we know who is really the better defender. Ron Artest is one of the best if not the best defender in the business today. In fact, he is not even in the top 10 in that department. Let me also mention to you that Shane Battier, Artest's team mate averaged less than .8 steals a game, altough some consider him to be the best kobe defender during the playoffs. The bottomline is, being a stealing machine is not enough. In order for you to be a good defender, you need size, strength, quickness and athleticism, quick hands(here is where steals come in. you see, it is just one of the many requirements) and of course patience and good basketball IQ (this is where Battier is one of the best.)
So if you look at Rick Rubio, clearly he doesn't have enough strength, he is not that quick as the other PGs, he is defenitely not athletic, but yes, he has quick hands, relatively tall (6'4 i think), and i believe in his basketball IQ, but it's just not enough. Just imagine him defending a postup guard like Billups when he does not have enough strength, or guarding the flashy CP3 when he is not that quick and athletic. So, that being said, let me add that the king's backcourt is one of the weakest. Our backcourt defense is pathetic and always bullied, so what we need is a point guard who can somehow ease that weakness, and I dont think rubio is the right choice. If we want a PG who could help our backcourt defense, then IMO, tyreke evans is the better choice. he has the strength, size, quickness, atlethicism to guard the premier PG of this league. You might say that he is not a pass-first point, but still, he can defend and score, which we desperately need. Passing, i am sure he will learn that with the help of Carril, and he already played point guard in Memphis so all he need is a bit of adjustment, which he could do during the summer league and the pre-season games.

uhh
Paul is one of, if not the best defenders at his position. Artest is an excellent defender, but he is not the defender he was 3-4 years ago. Although you do make a very good point with Battier. I’ll even throw out Bruce Bowen and Tayshuan Prince as two great defenders that don’t get many steals.
I think the thing with Rubio is that he is commited to playing defense, unlike other players the kings are looking at. He really puts all he has into that end of the floor, sometimes to a fauld (I.E. playing too close, taking risks). As long as the want is there, he can be taught how to be a better defender. Like I said before, all of Rubio’s holes can come down to one thing: strength. If he is able to put on adequate muscle, he can be a greaet player in the NBA.
And when its all said and done, I think Evans is going to be a SF. He is strong and long enough to defend most players at the position. He is not a PG.

meant this as a reply
sorry Ell do you mean SG when you write SF
you did the same thing in a different thread post.
Evans is a guard, argument over 1 or 2 is the debate. Why do you expect him to be forward (rebound, guard 6’10" guys).
Lastly, the workouts have to show something in addition to the rhetoric on the web from every media outlet related to the NBA (sports sites, local and national newspapers). The workouts don’t show passing to much of a degree, but everyone, including Geoff Petrie realize that the Kings need a point guard. If he draft Evans, then Evans is a point guard.

Because thats where he will be best
This league is becoming a mismatch league. He will be better breaking bigger players off the dribble, and that is what makes him a better 3. I’m not saying he won’t play a lot at the 2, but when it is all said and done I think he will be a 3. He has the strength and length to guard most SF’s in the league. 6’10 SF’s are becoming harder and harder to find, they are all going to PF to use thier quickness. What SF could Evans not guard as well as your average SF?

well...
on the tall side – Rashard Lewis, on the strong side, Brandon Bass. There is also Josh Howard, Ron Artest, Kevin Durant that I can think of off the top of my head in the West Conference.

Excellent use of the shift key!
The draft lottery has reinforced my belief that there are not enough bad words in the English language.

Rubio isn't the best man defender
and I think his strength is a big part of it. However, he is great on help defense, which is where he gets a ton of his steals. The point of Rubio’s defense, as mentioned earlier, is that he WANTS to play defense. That alone makes him a better defender.

He's a good defender in Europe
but it probably won’t translate to the NBA very well.

Please, my eyes are bleeding!!!
Have you read anything else on this site before writing your “informed” fan post. Sorry to rip on you. I know it takes time and energy to write a fan post. But spend a little time and energy reseraching before writing. Otherwise it’s just a he said, she said, argument—which we have way too many of as it is.
Remember two years ago when we drafted a big white, slow, unathletic center? Still think Hawes is slow and unathletic?
Rubio is not an all out sprinter, but he is very, very fast with the ball. To say he is unathletic is ignorant of his play at best. Have you watched him at all?
As far as strength, he is a 6’ 4" 18 year-old point guard. Go back and look at your high school picture? What do you see? He is still a kid. He will add muscle.
And yet with all that said, he manges to steal, rebound, get great assists, and lead against a team of full grown men.
If you don’t like the kid that’s fine. But please, please, please, for all that is holy stop throwing around this slow, unathletic, weak, crap, unless you’ve actually done your homework!
Okay, back to my hold till tomorrow.
