Guess Who
I am going to describe a player, and think about who comes to mind.
Great one one-on-one skills. Good handles, above average passer and court vision, and very good size for a PG. Has shown he sometimes plays more for himself than his team, and makes questionable decisions with the ball in his hand. Tends to dominate the ball in order to be as effective as he can. Has almost unreal length, with a tremendous wingspan for his height. Not the most explosive athlete, but very smooth and a bit above average for the NBA. Good quickness with the ball in his hands. Was a terrible, terrible shooter for a while but has greatly improved lately. Is a very good defender, but only when he wants to be.
Have you thought of someone yet?
Tyreke Evans?
Guess again. I just described John Salmons. Think about it. They have almost identical strengths and weaknesses. So much so that its just scary. They even seem to display the same "If I was more emotionless I would be dead" expression. And if you don't believe me about his size, check out draftexpress' measurment history here: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/John-Salmons-4214/
We have been through this before. A player like Evans will not work. Its been proven. Martin and Salmons were almost never able to play great while on the floor at the same time. Salmons did have good numbers, but the team won 17 games last year.
Also, Salmons is a proven player, we know what he can do. Evans has yet to play in the NBA, and while I am sure he will be a good player, why would you take that risk? Why invest something as valuable as the 4th pick in the draft for a player that you just unloaded for cap relief 5 months ago?
I just have to have faith that the Kings won't make the mistake in drafting Evans. I am not saying that he won't be a good player, but he just won't fit. As a matter of fact, he is not a PG. He will play SF in this league eventually, where he can use his strength and length on defense and his quickness on offense. If he is the best player available, then please, by all means take him. This is a weak draft, and you have to go that route on a terrible team. But if the kings pick him with Rubio on the board, or even Flynn or Harden, I don't know what I would do.
Actually, I know exactly what I would do. Come back here, cry a little bit, and lie to myself to feel better. You know, like I did after the lottery.

I don't understand
Pigeonholing someone to an existing NBA player. I know that some guys have skillsets that will remind you of a current player, but Tyreke Evans is his own guy – and if he improves his jumpshot, he should be be awfully tough to defend in this league.
And I don’t remember John Salmons leading his University of Miami team to the brink of an NCAA title as a freshman. At this point, I think that’s the only tangible comparison you can make, since that’s the extent of Evans’ experience that matches up with Salmons.
If Evans and Martin can’t coexist, that doesn’t mean you don’t draft Evans. If Evans is the best player available, you pick him. And deal Martin down the road…or deal Evans. They would both be valuable assets, and assets is what this team needs.
With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Rickeke Flynenningday, point guard from Europe, Memphis, Syracuse, UCLA and Parts Unknown.

totally agrre with you otis29
First, john salmons never played point, tyreke already started playing point guard during the later plart of his memphis days. Second, you said that " Tends to dominate the ball in order to be as effective as he can". Well, let me tell you that Chris Paul averaged 15 shots a game. Lets face it, people just overlook it because of his 11 assist/game. Plus, this guy’s athleticism, size, strength and quickness, plus the other complement the you have said above, will defenitely boost our poor backcourt, that’s for sure.

Actually I seem to remember
Salmons coming into the league as a supersized PG. I didn’t work for him, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work for Evans. Personally I think Tyreke will be a better player than Salmons

Salmons was a shooting guard
who was getting better at running the point in college. His initial position was not point guard.

For most of my life
I was an NBA fan first and a Kings fan second, so I guess that counts for something (currently the NBA and Kings are about even). Also sometimes last summer when I was bored I’d read the draft archives of Kings and other basketball players for fun.. that was a boring summer.
I doubt I’m not getting as much information as you are each night, btw.

Evans actually ran the point guard position near-full time
while Salmons didn’t. Pretty much, Evans is much more of a point guard than Salmons; better handles and court vision.

Good point Otis
People seem to discount that the kid played PG on Memphis for 23 games, and Memphis won 22 of those games. He may not be a “pure” pass first point guard, but who outside of Jason Kidd and Ricky Rubio is?

agree with the salmons comparison.
if the kings draft him to play the one, they’d better sign hedo to share the ball handling duties. evans is not a point guard. i understand the interest, but not the infatuation—he’s not the second coming of magic or penny hardaway (pre-injuries).

Evans on the floor with Garcia and Martin
would be good enough offensively with shared PG duties (No Martin is not allowed to handle),,,but on D you still have a problem because Evans and Garcia are not quick enough to handle the fast 1s.

You know -
Garcia has done a better job of handling CP3 than anyone on that has played for the Kings recently. I realize that this is a lot like being the least obese kid at fat camp, but it’s something, isn’t it?
