A source, however, says that there's one huge missing piece in the picture: GM Geoff Petrie has stayed quiet as the debate has raged over what to do and he continues to have the biggest voice on the basketball staff. ... [S]everal GMs and scouts believe the talk of not taking Rubio is merely a smoke screen to keep Minnesota or the Knicks or any other team interested in him from making deals to jump ahead of the Kings in order to get Rubio.

Typical Petrie
Just staying in the background, making his decision while everyone argues. I do believe it will be HIS decision at the end of the day and I trust the guy.

Couple updates on Amick's twitter
Best guess right now: Evans will be the Kings’ pick if he’s there, and moving down remains much more of a possibility than moving up
Rubio not out of Kings’ conversation, though. Could still see it for a number of reasons

Interesting
I’d have to say Evans based on the tea leaves as well.
But is that what Petrie WANTS me to think???
by nbrans on Jun 24, 2009 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Evans can be a star, he has the length and size...
Its really a matter if he’ll ever be able to truly handle the PG position. If we take him hopefully he can, otherwise we will have two amazing SG’s and Beno.
There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru
by moproblemz on Jun 24, 2009 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He could play as long as
Beno or Garcia is on the floor with him…I’m not sure you would spend a 4 on that.
by ElRonToro on Jun 24, 2009 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I actually don't really think he's a PG longterm
But if Petrie drafts him I don’t mind the idea of playing him at both PG and SG until we see what we have. If, as I suspect, SG is his natural position because he struggles to guard PGs and is more suited to a Brandon Roy-esque role as a ballhandling SG, down the line you can look at the possibility of trading either Evans or Martin.

Evans is the guy I want least
We just traded John Salmons a few months ago. Why are we drafting his clone again?
At least Flynn and Rubio are actually point guards.
by Carl on Jun 24, 2009 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's my question too
Very clearly we have a huge hole at PG. This draft is deep in quality PGs. Our best player is a SG who can’t swing to another position and is a poor ballhandler. Why are we drafting the one top backcourt player who can’t play the point? If his comp is Larry Hughes, Larry Hughes was a disaster at the point for the Warriors.

I think the hope
Would be that he’s more Brandon Roy than John Salmons. But I understand your concern.

Minny's choice
Am I crazy to think that Minny would be nuts to package 5 & 6 for 2? A choice between Rubio or Evans AND Curry (or Flynn AND Evans, Harden AND Flynn, etc. etc.) should be a no-brainer for them. I’m not buying these reports. They must be trying to hold onto 6 and still get 2 somehow. (And I’m in the pro-Rubio camp)
by TheJust on Jun 24, 2009 7:02 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
You are not crazy
They want to use 5 and 18 to get 2. Memphis wants Love and one of 5 and 6 or both 5 and 6. Minny won’t budge. They don’t need to. Those two picks are golden
www.mancancook.net
by vfettke on Jun 24, 2009 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
They also offered 5 and 18 for 3,
it sounds like OKC isn’t budging though as they don’t want to risk losing Harden.
There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru

That makes FAR more sense
I must have been misreading the reports. Or accidentally reading Chad Ford. Those two picks ARE golden. I can’t believe I’m jealous of Timberwolves fans.
by TheJust on Jun 24, 2009 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are the Grizz the crazy ones?
They sure are asking a lot for a team to move up from 5 to 2, which is basically giving up Love for the ability to go from Curry/Evans/Jennings/Flynn to Rubio.
by misterbrister on Jun 25, 2009 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ahhh . . . it is the T-Wolves
I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded #5, #6 and #18 for Memphis’s #2. Pick Rubio to watch him run back to Spain and the NBA found the T-Wolves committed some major infraction costing them next years pick.

If we move down presumably trading with the wolves,
what do we do with the 18 (which I presume is what they would offer) since reportedly OKC turned down the 5 and 18 for 3. Do we package it with the 23 to move to mid teens? It would allow us a lot more flexibility however whom would we target.
Unfortunately we didn’t work out Lawson otherwise I would suggest we go Evans and Lawson. Although we were high on Lawson last year and were presumably ready to take him at 12 before he went back to school.
If Earl Clark or Terrence Williams are there that would be another possibility to take alongside Flynn. My brain cannot handle all these options I think its time to shut it down until tomorrow afternoon.

Maybe
could be interesting though. DX has Jennings dropping to 17 and Young up to 18 now. We could take Casspi as a big “fuck you” to Portland (assuming he’s the reason Portland got the 22 pick). How great would it be to leap frog Portland to get their guy? I can see Petrie walk out of the draft room, see Pritchard, and slyly flip him off

That makes sense, it also looks like OKC will pick Rubio at 3
thus nullifying our decision altogether about Flynn versus Rubio. I wonder if the Kings would take Harden if they get Detroit’s pick at 15.

Petrie will do whatever the Maloofs want
and the Maloofs want whatever will sell tickets and memorabilia in the short term, not what makes good basketball sense.
Whomever they get: Rubio, Flynn or Evans, I sure hope I don’t have to watch another year of soothing, Vagisil defense. Whether through the draft or by other means, we have got to get a reliable enforcer/lock down player.
As Barkley told me when I asked him in person about the Kings, “Better get your tissues ready.” (I protest). Again, he says: “Get your tissues ready.”
It’s going to be amazing though, a year from now to see just which PG slipped through the cracks and became a stud later in the draft. I think the people heralding Ty Lawson may have something.

Duh
What he wrote was something most Kings fans already knew. Bucher could have written that a month ago, as when was the last time there was a substantial leak out of the Kings. Most of the national stuff written about the Kings is just fiction.
Had the misfortune to listen to the afternoon show, Napaer is a tool, he never comes out and says if he had the pick he would pick Evans, which is fine, but then he doesn’t really back up what he is saying with any real concrete reason. He was disssing Rubio by saying he couldn’t start this year and he is a bad defensive player, No way, what stunning logic, way to inform your audience. If Rubio has the upside of being a elite NBA player (who knows if this is true), wouldn’t that be part of the equation, Evans maybe potentially a good NBA player. Thats the reason why I tend to listen to other shows as you get whats it called oh yeh insight.
Imagine this is really bad draft, look how screwed the T wolves will be then with two bad draft picks
by Murf on Jun 24, 2009 9:36 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I found that interesting as well
He and Lamb both seem to dislike Rubio. And that’s fine…but they allowed callers to say that Rubio is just another soft, Euro who won’t play defense without dropping some facts. Namely, that Rubio was the defensive player of the year in his league – and that he’s been playing successfully with grown men since he was 16 years old.
Now those things might not translate to the NBA, but there is as good of a chance of that happening as Flynn’s leadership skills and Evans’ ability to get to the basket.
Sheesh, at least know a little about Rubio if you’re going to do an afternoon sports show. It’s not like he’s been playing hoops on one of Jupiter’s moons.
