Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Sacramento has reportedly offered Detroit the #23 and #31 picks in exchange for the #15. The Kings may target DeJuan Blair at 15 if he’s available, while the Pistons like Toney Douglas and possibly DaJuan Summers.

If it's true they're trying to move up

My guess is that they’re going for a point guard at #13-#15 in anticipation of drafting Evans #4.

I really can’t imagine that they’re interested in Blair.

IF

We get the 15th, Petrie might snag Jrue Holiday. He’s selected to go at 20 on nbadraft.net. Its either than Hansbrough, Williams, Blair, or Casspi. Although they have Jennings going at 14, so I guess he’s in the mix as well, but dont forget Holiday!

by Bambooozled on Jun 24, 2009 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

that would be great but if that is the purpose of the gamble

the level of (im)probability is not Petrie’s style (thank god).

by betweentheeyes on Jun 24, 2009 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think

that you have to get one “true” PG with one of those picks. Either Flynn first, then Jrue; or else Tyreke and then a Jeff Teague/Ty Lawson/Darren Collison.

I think Evans and Holiday are too similar to draft both.

I would LOVE to get Blair

As long as his knees are a-ok, having him up front with JT and Hawes would be real nice. Blair is a beast and a bruiser, something JT and Spencer really arent.

Flynn/Rubio / Beno
Kmart / Cisco
Noc / Greene
JT/ Blair
Hawes / Gortat maybe?

I think thats a pretty decent 8 or 9 man rotation.

Blair

would be a potentially great pick at #15 – from all I have READ and from what little my poorly discerning eyes have seen – the guy has third in rotation frontcourt written all over him (in the best sense of the term)

- impressive rebounding
- tough with a winning attitude
- will work hard to get better
- limiited as he is a bit too slow and a bit too small to guard most NBA PF or SF – at the same time he creates his own version of a mismatch
- positive bench and locker room presence
- risky knees (Leon Powe and half a dozen other NBA bench guys) which is why he will be available

by betweentheeyes on Jun 24, 2009 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

let me Pook myself here

I can see Ty Lawson being available and that would be a great pick up as well. Keep in mind that Geoff Petrie stated in his interview yesterday that additional frontcourt help is wanted for rebounding.

I trust GP enough to feel that he is not subject to all of this activity just because it is a bunch of activity and has a determined reason for trading up. I don’t know the cost factor here – I would guess that whatever interest in selling the #23 has vanished (the Lakers are announcing that they are auctioning their first round pick). If the cost of #15 is less or the same as #23 and the estimated cost of #31 combined. In no way will the Kings spend MORE money on this draft

by betweentheeyes on Jun 24, 2009 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow

Terrence Williams would be a realistic possibility for the Kings at the 15th spot. Very nice.

by kingsfan300 on Jun 24, 2009 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would love T-Will here at this spot...

even if we go with Evans at #4 and get T-Will, we get two lengthy atheltic 2-way players that can both play 2 positions…think Cisco upgrades…I would imagine if this is how it went down we would need to package Cisco in a trade. My excitement behind this is that I think we need to get more physical and focus on athleticism and defense, Cisco is average at both and these guys would be huge upgrades

Petrie selects Rubio or Flynn, hopefully Flynn!! and if Detroit is down with swapping picks the Kings take Terrence Williams!! So we got Flynn and T- Will, and hopefully through free agency try and land Brandon Bass!!!!! The Kings will be on the Come Up!!!!!!!!!!

Jennings commentary

by Josh Peter at Yahoo! Sports

I feel like this kid is going to be a real asset in this league in 2-3 years, but every write-up I see is inherently negative. Is it just that the powers-that-be want to discourage players from working outside the established (and free) farm system they now have in place?

Oh, and Sonny Vaccaro is a titanic douchebag.

Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.

by andy sims on Jun 24, 2009 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

no argument and there is no ignoring the obvious gifts of this athlete

but his “other side” is the point of my comment. I don’t think his personality is the direction the Kings wish to go (you can argue Ron Artest, Jason Williams, Rashard McCants). I would say the experience of having had those players on board is the ammunition to avoid the controversy (fair or not for this 19 year old).

by betweentheeyes on Jun 24, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What controversy?

That time a basketball player said he was better than another basketball player?

I sure wouldn’t want a Kings player to ever think that….

by Charlieb on Jun 25, 2009 3:03 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

Wouldn’t want a bit of feistiness in our PG.

With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Rickeke Flynenningday, point guard from Europe, Memphis, Syracuse, UCLA and Parts Unknown.

by otis29 on Jun 25, 2009 5:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

guys - feisty-ness is not the issue

being a team player, being able to take direction, being coachable, being an attraction not a distraction.

In this draft, for the numerous point guard choices, Jennings has the most (perhaps the only) “red flags” about these issues. In this draft the only one with more to be concerned about is Terence Williams. Why deal with this additional unknown if you don’t have to?

If we were talking of a proven dominanting talent it is a risk worth considering, if we are talking about a presumptive talent in “a generally weak draft” let someone else draft the kid and re-evaluate him in three years.

by betweentheeyes on Jun 25, 2009 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree with most of what you are saying

I just think a lot of this is overblown. Rajon Rondo was a huge part of getting the Celtics to a championship last season, and it turns out he might be King Knucklehead himself.

Let’s just say Brandon Jennings is the most talented player in this draft. If you draft him, and he turns out to be too much of a pain in the ass, you trade him. Talent (or even perceived talent) will always have value in this league.

See Williams, Jason – traded for Bibby, Mike.

Not really sure we are going for a second PG if we get that pick

As much as you want to forget about it, we still have Beno there. If Evans is picked with the 4th he’s still coming in as a PG because he wouldn’t just be a backup for Kevin

by eduardo_m7 on Jun 24, 2009 8:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That'll work

I’ll take 2 top 15 picks in exchange for 3 top 31s.

Blair is a beast, losing the weight should help the knees. Grabbing Jennings and giving him time to mature is intriguing as hell, too. There are decent options here, and I’m weirdly optimistic.

Moving up is good

I’d be happy to see the Kings to move up, no matter who they get (aside from Blair, that is). Getting a PG with the second pick would take the sting out of picking Salmons Hughes Evans first.

this would be a really good move IMO

It seems to me that the third or fourth tier (depending on how you rank them) of this draft goes about 18 deep, and then there are a lot of question marks. We’d get a sure player this way, especially since the drafting wizard himself is picking them

Blair is rugged

something we need. I’d be stoked with Rubio/Flynn at 4, Blair at 15.

I know some of you guys are high on Teague, but he’s seriously overrated. He disappeared from the second half of Wake Forest’s season, and isn’t really comfortable as a point guard. He’s barely 6 feet tall, and has a delayed push shot for a jumper. The comparisons to Bobby Jackson are insane.

Hansbrough - DO NOT WANT

I’m tired of unathletic “hard-working” energy guys who end up fat and whiny like Brad Miller. This team doesn’t just need smart, team players, it needs athletes, because we already have key players who are not, by NBA standards, elite in that regard.

You bastards tried to hype Joakim Noah to me last year, and I wouldn’t trade Spence or JT for his overhyped ass. Hansbrough will be decent as an NBA player, like Noah, assuming Noah ever learns to play. We can do better at the #15 spot, if we get it. If not, we can do better than TH at #23, too.

the 4th pick

As Gordon LIghtfoot once sang in “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”, “does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes into hours?.” Now granted this is not life or death, although at times it may feel like it, but Petrie will make the correct call.
. Anyone see Wallace, Hedo, Peja, Martin, or JT coming?? We never did and neither did Chad Ford or Mark Stein or Draft Express, etc, etc. But after Petrie drafted these players, the next day all the so-called draft experts when grading the draft gave our picks D- grades and asked what the hell was Petrie thinking only to have all of them playing in the NBA at a high level except Douby. Hell, you can’t roll 7’s all the time.

So don’t be suprised if Petrie drafts Joe Schmoe from “What’s a Matter U” and the guy is a member of the all rookie team next year and Chad Ford gives us a D- come Friday morning. It is only fitting. Petrie will make the right call. Always has and always will.

One comfort that can get gleamed is big trades are usually developed and reported the night before the draft. If it’s midnight and there are no substantial rumors of anyone jumping to the #2 and #3 pick than don’t expect movement tomorrow.

I think I heard

draft pick swapping stops at noon Eastern Then its only Players for picks, or picked player swaps.

by ElRonToro on Jun 24, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I heard that too

Thanks for the reminder. Are you sure about the details?

by eduardo_m7 on Jun 24, 2009 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Have I ever got anything exactly right?

Of course I’m not sure about the details. But i’ll bet your house that you can’t trade draft picks after noon.

by ElRonToro on Jun 24, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL

Good enough. I think I heard it on Sportsline earlier today but I wasn’t really paying attention to details

by eduardo_m7 on Jun 24, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

to clarify

I mean you can’t trade draft picks for draft picks

If he's there at #4

Thabeet for me of course, then the best PG available at 15, which could be a very good one.

I just don't know what we do with another SF

barring a trade of course.

Now Noce and 23 for the 15 – I’m down with it, then maybe we take another 3-4 guy. I believe Detroit has the cap space(?) Or maybe not until July 1.

There's a story on

www.aroyalpain.com that the Pacers are offering their 13th for our 23 and 31st. I don’t know how true because they didn’t link any sources, but that’s the story.

If it's true

it’s also better because that’s them offering it to us, not us offering it to them, which would make it seem like a done deal.

It would be a done deal for me

Cause the Kings would’ve pulled the trigger already.

Just because

we havent heard about it, it doesnt mean it hasnt happened!

by Bambooozled on Jun 24, 2009 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe not.

There have been a lot of rumors about teams in the 11-15 range moving down to save money. The #31 pick is very valuable do to the non-guaranteed status and the fact that at least one or two first round talents will drop to there.

I can see the deal happening

I just think that if it would have happened, Amick would’ve twitered something.

Is it weird I don’t want to go to sleep cuz I fear I’m going to miss a trade or something??

by eduardo_m7 on Jun 24, 2009 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Teams wait until the last minute to make sure they can"t get other deals completed.

This is always a card game- if multiple teams are involved/interested this could be a very good thing for the Kings. I would love to see a big man added of a high skilled small forward or a strong combo guard. Two out of three might be accomplished if the Kings stand pat at 23 and 31. But…you get a much better prospect at 13 or 15- maybe even Holiday, Blair, Williams, Jennings or Mullens. The Kings need talent and have a lot of holes. Landing a 2nd fringe lottery pick could really make a lot of difference two years down the road.

And for confirmation to this rumor

We go to the #1 source for all things Kings, Mr’ Sam Amick. Special thanks to Twitter for being annoyingly informative

To the question

Sacramento has reportedly offered Detroit the #23 and #31 picks in exchange for the #15. any confirmation on this?

Amick replies

Have heard talk of them combining the picks to move up, but not that scenario. Likely true, though.

If they could get it done

its a good move.

I’ve been saying for months – 3 more rookies?! On top of JT, Shawes and Donte’? How could we possibly develop them all?

I don't mind that

Moving up gives you the chance of getting a better player with a better chance of getting minutes and having an impact for this team.

That what I think

get the best two you can and develop them with as many real minutes as you can

What a good deal this could be

Imagine these two picks + probably another lottery pick next year (maybe a second first rounder through a trade) and the puzzle starts to take form

I'm all for this

Seems against Petrie’s history, but there are some intriuging prospects in that range, such as Mullens or Clark.

by Htrain41 on Jun 24, 2009 11:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The only thing that doesn't quite make sense to me

I’m not so sure that Petrie is too hot on many of the players in this range? Maybe Terrance Williams? There didn’t seem to be much said about Blair’s workout. Lawson never worked out for us, and Mullens didn’t either, right? I know Petrie said he’s not necessarily against drafting players that didn’t workout, but it seems to me he worked-out a lot of players in the 23 and 31 range and not many in the 15 range. Unless he wants Holiday or Jennings at 15, which would kind of shock me. Like “Geoff Petrie draft choice” shocking.

Targets

Certainly Gone at 15: Griffin, Thabeet, Rubio, Evans, Flynn, Harden, Curry, Hill, Holiday, Williams (promise from Charlotte at 12), and probably DeRozan

Possibly Available – Johnson, Blair, Clark, Lawson, Jennings, Maynor, Henderson, Hansbrough

Of these Henderson, Hansbrough, Lawson and Maynor didn’t workout for the Kings in Sacramento, so they are less likely to be acquired in moving up. That leaves James Johnson, DeJuan Blair, Earl Clark and Brandon Jennings.

Phoenix (14) is supposedly enamored with Clark. Blair has been mentioned as a strong possibility for Indiana (13). DX currently has Blair falling all the way to 21, which is the lowest he’s been in quite some time on their mock. James Johnson is allegedly being considered by Toronto (9) and New Jersey (11). Most likely GP is targeting one of these three. Jennings would be strange if they were to acquire either Rubio or Flynn at No. 4.

great thing about acquiring Blair would be that Portland is apparently very high on him also…

At #15

Clark would be the man. If he get consistent, he’s terrific

Clark, Jennings, Johnson

These guys are the players I could see us targeting with the 13th or 15th pick.

WHy are we trading up to 15?!?!

If we are trading up to the 15th pick it better not be to draft Blair. It better be for Terrence Williams or Chase Budinger. I still don’t think we need to trade up here though. I think we can still find value in a SF by drafting Casspi, Sam Young (I’m high on him), and/or Austin Daye with either the 23rd pick or the 31st. I think it would be a waste to jump to the middle of the first round. Then take Patty Mills with the 31st pick as an insurance policy on our 4th pick PG.
