Tyreke Evans: Substance over Style
After Blake Griffin, suspense filled the draft. Would Memphis or Oklahoma City take Ricky Rubio and if not, who? As David Stern read their picks, it became apparent that the Sacramento Kings would have the option of picking the Spaniard. Leading up to the draft, rumors swirled about the actual level of interest the Kings had in Rubio. The selection of Tyreke Evans over Rubio indicates that they indeed soured on Ricky and shows the direction the Kings want to go in.
The selection of the Memphis guard shows that the front office is indeed more dedicated to winning in the near future than filling empty seats with the more hyped Rubio. Rubio undoubtedly has great potential but will take time to adjust to the NBA; timing being something the Kings don't have. Furthermore, he wasn't the right fit for our needs. The Kings needed to get athleticism, size, and defense; something Evans will provide. While Tyreke has issues with inconsistent shooting, point guards generally aren't used to put points up in bunchs. Instead, he needs to be able to distrubute the ball well and guard the already excellent number of point guards currently in the league. I know I feel a lot safer with him guarding Chris Paul or Deron Williams than with the undersized Rubio. Sure, we'll miss out on some incredible pass or move that Rubio makes in the future, but the Kings chance of topping 17 wins looks a lot brighter with Evans. Now we just need another big man. With the cap room we have and are building, the chance to land a top big free agent seems to provide hope that the Kings will return to glory. And for God's sake, beat the living hell out of L.A.

Draft
Could someone please tell those stupid owners that we do need more African American players on the team. This United Nations team that they’ve built is not working for us. Gees. That’s why we couldn’t even get a good coach. They would all rather be at home than embarrassed by this pitiful team. Thus the reason we let our season tickets go after 10 years. This is just ridiculous!!!!!! Better yet, we’ll just pick up more used up players. Anything to afford those gambling habits and whores in Vegas, right? Gees. Please move this team to…….anywhere. GO WARRIORS
And racism rears its ugly head.

Go Warriors?
Color me surprised.
With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Rickeke Flynenningday, point guard from Europe, Memphis, Syracuse, UCLA and Parts Unknown.
You're an ignorant, idiotic, idiot-face.

re:jmylove... WTF is wrong with you?
I’m guessing you are about one more comment like that one away from being banned.
I know there are a lot of SacTowners (including me) who would prefer that you leave them out of your “us” and “we” references. If you wanna play the race card, take it somewhere else, OK?

Ummm...

You just made the arguement for Rubio over Evans. Rubio is the distributor who makes people better and Evans is the one who “puts up points in bunches.”
Yeah, this guy is stuck on dumb, IMO.
-Claims Evans (or is it Evens? lol) is from ‘Cuse.
-Argues for a passing PG, and thinks Evans is better suited for that role than Rubio (despite the fact that Evans is a ball-dominating, poor outside-shooting combo guard).
-States that the Kings don’t have time to wait for Rubio to adjust to the NBA. Really? Is our championship window about to close?

Time will tell who is right
Before I defend my points, I will acknowledge my mistakes. In my haste to post the entry (due to the fact that I had other obligations at work) I didn’t double check some of the information I posted in regards to the spelling of Tyreke’s last name or the college he attended. Just as of a few minutes ago, I went in and corrected those mistakes. So thanks for the heads up.
As for my point that we need a guard that can distribute the ball, I still think Evans is better than Rubio in that regard because he is an actual scoring threat. If he gets close to the rim, the other team will have to respond to him. It is then that he can dish out to Kmart or feed Jason Thompson in the low post. Rubio does have cuter passes but the fact is that if you’re not a legitimate scoring threat, no one will feel the need to provide help guarding him; canceling out potential assists. Do you not remember what Magic Johnson brought to the table as a PG? He was big, athletic, and a scoring threat. Now before you misconstrue my words, I am not saying Tyreke=Magic. I am saying he brings in similar attributes on offense. I feel those attributes are more important in helping us win than the attributes of say that of former King Jason Williams. He will create match up problems for teams with smaller guards.
I also notice that you critics don’t take on my argument about Evans’ ability to match up with the bigger, more athletic points in the league. Would you seriously feel more comfortable with Rubio guarding someone like CP3 or Billups? Didn’t think so.
“States that the Kings don’t have time to wait for Rubio to adjust to the NBA. Really? Is our championship window about to close?”
You seriously want to continue to watch the Kings get pounded for another couple of years? Unlike some pessimists out there, I actually believe we are a big man away from being a great team again. Kmart is really good. J Thompson has some great potential. I think we upgraded at the point. Hawes isn’t too shabby either, though I’m not 100% sold on him yet… So yeah, I do think we can win soon and not take a huge gamble.
I agree with a lot of your points
although I don’t think Evans will a better distributer than Rubio.
However I don’t think Evans will be nearly as bad a passer as some people think. With his ability to get to the rim and finish, opposing defenses are going to have to collapse on him. Once he penetrates he can drop it off to JT or Hawes or kick it out to an open shooter.
Being able to get into the paint is an important skill for PGs and Tyreke has that. His ability to penetrate is going to create an opprotunity for him to rack up his fair share of assists.
plus he’s going to be a beast on the defensive end.

Tyreke is only 19!
Everyone says Rubio has WAAAY more potential than Tyreke, but he played just one year in school. Think about how much Durant has picked his game up in 2 years. Tyreke has a ton of room to improve and I don’t think this draft pick was about the FO trying to save their jobs and win now. That is ridiculous. The Maloofs realize we are in a rebuilding phase just like the rest of us.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Tyreke out there this summer, especially if we get to se Jason Thompson, Donte Greene and even Omri Casspi as well.
nice post
we are going to get to see our picks play soon in the summer league and I’m certain that Tyreke will be making believers out of the whiners just as soon.

Is someone gonna post the obligatory Draft success/failure thread with a poll soonish? I’d like to see what everyone thinks without going back and reading the 3k comments I missed during the majority of the draft.
Personally I’m psyched because I believe in Petrie’s abilities as an evaluator of talent, and if he see Evan’s as a better talent than Rubio, then I’m cool with getting on board with that.
I wanted to adopt, but all the good looking babies were taken
That would actually be a fun poll...
… A+ through F, with all the pluses and minuses in between. I’d be interested to see where the STR crowd places us at this point. I’d probably go with a B-, with the acquisition of Rodriguez softening my disappointment at passing on Rubio.
One last thing
Rubio fanboys, answer me this: How do you feel about his dad saying its possible he plays in Spain a couple more years? If he did stay in Spain, would that change your opinion about our selection?
Why do you think he is staying in Spain?
Honestly, do you really think he went through the whole draft to go home if we drafted him at 4? Lots of reasons to argue for or against Rubio/Evans, but my friend, this ain’t one of them.

Because his dad said so!
Not sure why his dad would put out the possibility that his son would stay in Spain if there wasn’t some element of truth in it. The whole point of him entering the draft was to cash in. However, going lower than expected, he will make a lot less. Being that he will have to pay his own money to escape the current contract, perhaps he stays a bit longer in Spain hoping to improve his game and subsequently, his payday. (especially due to the fact that he wouldn’t have to pay a huge sum to his former team)
Though the Rubio camp could be simply trying to bully the T-wolves into trading him (to a bigger market?) I agree that this isn’t the strongest argument (perhaps the weakest one), but I figure its just one more potential negative about this guy that I feel all the Rubio fans here should take into consideration before knocking Evans.
If the Kings would've selected Rubio
there would be no doubt he would’ve played here.
This is not another “shit, we passed on Rubio post.” It’s just a fact.
Is it a fact?
I agree it’s a likelihood, but that buyout does not sound completely resolved. Who knows what will happen.
Who knows what the wimp would've done
Latest news is that he didn’t attend the T-wolves’ press conference; with reports that he is upset that Minnesota is just too cold and would rather stay in Spain. Just reaffirms the fact that he lacks any sort of toughness, mental or physical. Evans is looking like the better prospect every hour. If he can’t face cold weather, how you think he’s gonna handle adversity in his pro career?
I think name-calling is inappropriate here.
You’re calling him a wimp because he doesn’t want to pay $4M to play for a team that drafted 3 point guards behind him?
He needed to go top 4 just to break even in paying his buyout.
Would you pay $4M to play in Minnesota under those conditions?

Then don't apply for the draft
Or make sure you workout with these teams and show them your talent. Or take your name out of the draft prior to the deadline.
These were all options as well.
With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Tyreke Evans, STUD out of Memphis.
I'm with otis on this one
That was the risk Rubio took enterting the draft.

This Is What Made The Arguement For Evans
I know I feel a lot safer with him guarding Chris Paul or Deron Williams than with the undersized Rubio
I thought about this and was like….yeah..I really don’t think he can guard the big name PG in this league. Evans probably can. Good post bro.
J-Mac got arm, D-Mac is unique, DHB got the hands, and he can move his feet.
Niners got Hill, he is really cheap, now they got Crabtree, hey don't fall asleep.
I am still confused that the Kings drafted Hugo
I am totally Lost on this.
(and his jersey number should be 4815162342)
00 would fit well
It’d look like a bra
