Technicality

The trade couldn’t be official after the Noon Eastern deadline for trading picks, so it will become official after PDX picks #38 for Sacramento.

Counter-point

Have you not learned anything at all the last 50+ years? There’s a reason why guys get drafted in the 1st Round and others just fall into the “2nd Round.” Good lord.

Seriously though, Petrie hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire with his 2nd Round picks. Don’t expect too much.

From ESPN's Draft Info:
Draft Projection: Second round to undrafted

Positives:

# Tough, physical player
# Tenacious rebounder
# Excellent motor
# Blue collar worker who never takes off a possession
# Good finisher around the basket

Negatives:

# Undersized for his position
# Lacks great athleticism
# Not a polished perimeter scorer
# Poor free throw shooter

Summary: Apr 14 Update: Brockman is known as a tough warrior in the paint, but he isn’t considered a top prospect because of his lack of athleticism and tendency to play below the rim. However, at Portsmouth, he came out aggressive, grabbing 21 rebounds and scoring 24 points in the first game. A few scouts were buzzing about what appeared to be more explosive athletic ability than expected from Brockman. Some scouts call him a poor man’s Tyler Hansbrough. I’m not sure how far that gets him in the draft, but it could land him somewhere in the second round.

Jan 2 Update: Brockman is sort of a so-so Tyler Hansbrough clone. Considering the NBA scouts aren’t convinced that Hansbrough is a lottery pick, you can understand why they have Brockman pegged as a second-rounder at best.

With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Rickeke Flynenningday, point guard from Europe, Memphis, Syracuse, UCLA and Parts Unknown.

God damn it Petrie, why do you hate the 2nd round? So many good guys left, like Derrick Brown, the PF from Xavier…..DAMN

Brockman doesn’t help us one bit. He is not an NBA quality athlete, and it isn’t because he is white. He just isn’t. Decent rebounder, but he isn’t defending crap.

I'll check

I don’t think that we’ve had a boat load of 2nd round picks, but I’ll look. As I mentioned in another thread, Mike Taylor was the only player of really any note to be drafted after Singletary and Ewing last year, so I’m not sure that those picks could be improved upon. And that’s probably the more telling stat – how many quality guys has GP let slip by in the 2nd round?

No 2nd round picks in 03, 05, 06, 07.

Jabari Smith (45) in 00 – no one of note drafted after him.

Maurice Jeffers (55) in 01 – no one of note drafted after him.

Corsley Edwards (58) in 02 – no one of note drafted after him.

Ricky Minard (47) in 04 – no one of note drafted after him.

Singletary(42)/Ewing(43) last year – Mike Taylor drafted by Clippers at #55.

OK, I'm talking myself into Kent Brockman

Looking at his info vs Brown, the Brock-man is a better rebounder, and it lists a knock on Brown as being “passive”, the opposite of Brockman. Shrug.

Yahoo! analysis...

“Brockman was a bit of mystery because he didn’t really work out for teams, leading some to speculate he had received some sort of guarantee — even with second-round money. He’ll have a legit chance to make the Kings’ roster. Grinder and the Kings could use some grit.”

dalt had Brockman rated as a 78.5

From dalt rankings: 77-82: Career Reserve/6th Man potential – These are the energy guys of the NBA. These players almost never become solid starters in the NBA. About half scoring in this rank will be out of the league in 3 years while the other half will be able to find a team to stick with and have a long career bringing some needed energy off the bench. Bobby Jackson (81.5), Kenny Thomas (81.5), Trevor Ariza (81), Daniel Gibson (79.5) and Eddie House (79.5) are among the players to score in this group.

You can love this draft or hate it but the one thing all the picks have in common is they are ALL tough. You guys whining about how bad the Kings are going to be, get over yourselves. We drafted a player with at least all star potential, got a pure pg from Portland and picked up 2 guys who bring a lot of toughness and energy to a team that had very little of either last season. Shut the natt up at least until we make summer league and we see what some of these guys can do!
