The 2009/10 NBA Salary Cap has not yet been announced. The 2008/09 NBA Salary Cap threshold was $58.68 million. Currently, the Kings would fall approximately $7 million below last season's salary cap. Last season's luxury tax threshold was set at $71.15 million.
Also, note that the above table does not include Ike Diogu (Qualifying Offer - $3,946,874), and Rashad McCants (Qualifying Offer - $3,644,595). It also omits Bobby Jackson, Cedric Simmons and Calvin Booth.
Head coach Paul Westphal and his assistants' (Jim Eyen, Mario Elie, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Truck Robinson) salaries are also not included above. However, Westphal is estimated to be earning $1.5 million for two seasons, with a team option for a third year at approximately $2 million.

Cool
Thanks for the info sroufe. Looks like we have about $8 Million to play with this summer or keep in our pocket. Only two players available in free agency would take up a decent chunk of that: Hedo or Gortat. I don’t think we’ll be taking him. I think instead we’ll get a couple more cheap filler options, like a guard and a big, possibly trading a future second rounder for Kyrylo Fesenko, a trade I would love.

Chad Ford's calculation
Is now posted on ESPN… he says Kings have about $7.5M depending on the final calculation of the cap

Thanks ltlftc
Here’s the LINK. (ESPN Insider)
I’ll post the new salary cap information here when it’s released, but Ford’s estimate seems accurate.
These are the teams projected to have noteworthy cap room:
Atlanta
Detroit
Memphis
Oklahoma City
Portland
Sacramento
Toronto
Another excellent read regarding this summer’s free agency is HERE.

Beno
Yikes, this really brings into light the ugliness that is Beno’s contract. Noce’s declining contract looks pretty good by comparison.

I really don’t think the team is going to use the cap room. After the salary dump 6 months ago I don’t see the reason why the team would spend the money. In fact, based on the projected revenue loss last year I expect a few low end free agents with K-9 or Noc to be sold off this year to produce a stable bottom line.
by bignerd on Jun 29, 2009 3:38 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Probably true
It makes more sense to keep the cap room we have and just wait for K9 to expire. That’ll leave us with a bout $16-17 million at the end of the year. We could also see Petrie try to move Beno’s contract and/or trade Nocioni too. The smart thing to do is stand pat and go after a bigger name, either in free agency or before the deadline. Personally, I’d like to see the Kings go after Chris Bosh. A big name player like that will be worth the money because the Maloofs will get a lot of it back in ticket sales

much rather see him walk at the end of the season than take back any lousy contracts or unless his contract gets us a player that adds to the team the Petrie is trying to build.

How about a draft pick?
Can we get a lottery pick in next years draft???? Would be fun to have 2 picks like Minnesota had this year. But I doubt Petrie drafts 4 pgs thou…..

4 point guards in 45 picks is a new record. I think Dimaggio’s 56 will go before this one.

I think you miscalculated something. Your final number looked low to me on original eyeball, and I’m either wrong in my own calculation, or we’re both wrong, or you’re right.
But, for ’Reke’s salary I got 3610080 (That’s the 3008400 * 20%). I didn’t add anything to Casspi’s salary (972500), and Brockman’s salary won’t likely be bumped to where it makes a huge difference.
I got 50,050,384 as the final salary. Interesting to see whose right. Excellent work homey.

On the depth chart
Casspi should probably be shown as a backup 3 and Brockman as a backup 4. The Kings do not have a backup center on this roster. JT is the closest they have to a backup 5 and he’s their starting 4.
All of this just shows that if the Kings do sign a free agent this summer, it is likely to be a backup center. As it is, if Hawes gets injured, they will have exactly zero centers available. This is not to say that the Kings will be signing a big name (Andersen, Gortat); they probably can’t afford it. I expect someone either less well-known or just less good, and therefore cheaper.

Agreed. We could push Casspi or Greene to the four, but neither has the bulk for it from what I’ve seen. I could see us spending a couple mil for a back-up center when Hawes gets in fould trouble or injured. The only way I see us psending more is if a real bargain shows up.

of course as has been said many times on this site, I will credit to Section as he has quoted it most often: “one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure”. Let’s place caveat emptor and beauty is in the eye of the beholder as additive footnotes.
Petrie has said as much that the Kings will next firm up the frontcourt. Given that this draft had little to no Centers available and the two I can think of were snapped up (ThaBust and BJ Mullens) it would take an addition in Summer League (for the same reasons doubtful) and free agency (which is an oxymoron). For some reason, they just aren’t building “good enough” bulky 7 footers much anymore.
Next years (2010) has some prospects so one can only hope that the Kings don’t overspend and overcommit to a ho-hum that they won’t play much anyway, talent depending. It would be irritating to see Spencer go down and have whomever they just allocated 3 years and $10M play 8 minutes a game anyway.
If so, I am hopeful that they just rough it with bulky PF’s and speed. If the Biedrins and Pau Gaols (and Chandlers and Odoms and Bynums) enjoy some freedom so be it.
If the Kings lose a game or 5 due to it because they just can’t adjust – better to do it next season than the season after. Next year has a built in excuse the following year that stuff won’t fly.

Undrafted Centers
Include: Josh Heytvelt, John Bryant, and Luke Nevill. Heytvelt and Bryant are intriguing and both worked out for Petrie already in Sacramento. I’d like to see one of them on the summer league roster. Nevill on the other hand never impressed me much at Utah. He supposedly more than held his own against Mullens in some predraft workouts but that’s not saying much IMO.

Good point.
Let’s get Heytvelt in here. I know a many of us thought he was a solid option at 31, and I still think he’s a much better prospect/player than Brockman. With no backup center on the roster we need to fill the summer league roster with all of the guys you mentioned.

It's amazing how we've gone from a Hydra at the 4 and no PGs to
too many 1-3s and a bare cupboard at the 4-5. Your depth chart really shows the need to move Nocioni, because Cisco is really the backup 2 and 3, which puts Omri or DontĂ© 4th on the SF depth chart and that’s not acceptable.
Good stuff. Thanks for crunching the numbers and let’s see if we can move Nocioni, Beno and K9.

Nocs is a perfect example of "ones man garbage is another man's treasure"
I like him but think he’s overpaid and he and Cisco make one of them redundant even though at times they have both played well together. If not for his contract I think Noc would be an attractive option for some team.

Does the final year of Shareef's insured contract count against our cap?
HoopsHype still shows it in the calculations, a final year of 6.6m. I know that insurance is paying for it so its not a financial hit, but does the contract still count against the cap?
Another thing to note is that the kings have trimmed roughly 16m in real cash (23m counting Shareef) off of the roster from last year, from 74m to 51m. That should help keep operating losses down this year significantly.
Going in to last year, Kings had the 9th highest payroll… the Griz the lowest at 57m. However, I expect that quite a few other teams are going to be down in the 50m area with the Kings this season.

would it be possible
to package K9 and Beno together for a center? I mean, we need a backup center, and we want to get rid of Beno’s contract, and hopefully K9’s expiring contract would be predy enough to take on Beno’s….is that possible or just wishful thinking??
by shadowchicken on Jun 30, 2009 3:41 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think their contracts kinda just balance out to even
K9’s expiring contract is a plus, Beno’s contract is a negative. You wouldn’t get any value in return. Why would a team want to take on a big long term contract along with an expiring? The only trade scenarios I could think of would be a team trying to get rid of a much bigger, crappier contract (ala Marbury) to save some cap. It wouldn’t be in the Kings’ interest to do that.
by CloudyEyes on Jun 30, 2009 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
the only way to unload Beno is...
1)Let him start and hope he puts up great numbers…then dangle him on the market and see who bites
2)Package him with someone that a team wants like a star like Martin or needs like a missing piece like Noc
For some reason I feel like the team would be more open to discussing trades for Martin (esp w/ Evans now) than trades for Hawes or Thompson. We have a good idea of what Martin’s ceiling is but Hawes and Thompson are probably still going to improve a lot.
Since we have K9 expiring this year I’d be open trying to get another nice expiring and a decent asset.
Anyone up for….
Bobby Simmons (10.5mill expiring) + Yi Jianlian(asset, bright future w/ some added bulk)
for
Kevin Martin + Beno’s (ugly and gets uglier with time) Contract
Don’t yell at me if you hate that one….but that would mean no more Beno and something like 22mil expiring so we can get in on the bidding wars for next summer or the summer after (maybe Dwade/Bosh in ‘10 or Melo in ’11) and the Nets get a player better than anyone they’re probably able to get next summer. I’d like the management to go after a real franchise player…it’s been a while since we had one.

we can disagree on yi and
I like rondo in your deal but it seems like a lot for Boston to give up.
A 20 mil expiring contract in Allen, a likely all-star caliber point guard in Rondo, and a first rd pick
for
A borderline all star in Martin, a bad contract in Beno, and a larger but decent contract in Noc
But the Kings would take your deal in a heartbeat

Give them a chance
I don’t think we should be too hasty to trade Beno, Martin or our other rotation players. Naturally, if they make us an offer we can’t refuse, well then we… err… can’t refuse, but let’s look at the facts:
The Kings won’t be title contenders this year. The playoffs will be a reach, given the depth of the West.
New coach means new system. Beno struggled with the coaching staff this last year, which – giving him the benefit of the doubt – may explain his lacklustre play. He could benefit from Westphal, and so could we as a result.
Regarding Beno – don’t forget that if we’d given him less, the Clippers would have snapped him up. We needed a point guard this time last year, and he was a guy that played well for us. He seemed like the right guy at the time. Who else was there? Arenas? Too pricey. Chris Quinn? Err… no.
Finally – What are the chances that any of the 2010 big names actually want to go to Sacramento? It’s not a big market, there is no loyalty to the Kings from them, we’ll have some money to throw at them, but not as much as others, the franchise could be moved if things don’t pan out, the roster is a little shaky… you get the idea. Clearing cap space for 2010 is all well and good, but I don’t see a Bosh, Wade or LeBron coming to town.
by Rickyflip on Jul 1, 2009 6:09 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
He got paid....
It’s obvious that it was a costly mistake to re-sign Beno. He was the Diogu of a few years ago in that he came on strong with a weak team late in the season. He was unwanted in San Antonio because of his attitude towards team work ethics and I think we learned last season that he has no intention on really working to improve his game.
Petrie rushed into re-signing him not because of his “star” potential, but because of the lack of depth at PG. Like most nba fans know, the Kings were in no shape to make a run at the West last year either and a little patience to use cap room wisely would have really opened up some doors. B Jax and B Brown (at that time) could have held down the pg spot with a little help from Cisco and we could have been in the exact same scenario right now just without an irksome 4-year deal for a sub par player (with a player option!).
The Kings shopped him a lot harder than a lot of people think and there were absolutely no takers. This leaves us with a pg who thinks he is a scorer, has the assist/turnover ratio of a bum, and really struggles against decent pg’s (did anyone really think he could hold his own against the West pg’s: Paul, Nash, Parker, Williams, Kidd, Billups/Iverson?) I mean Tony Parker is no defensive genius and he smashed Beno to a 1-12 with 2 pts and 6 assists mark. We don’t even need to get into his defensive abilities, we all know that they are non-existant.
Start Tyreke and see if we can limit Beno’s playing time to about 15 mins a game so we can damage control his value and get rid of him for anything at all.
