Q: Is there a particular position you prefer to play, shooting guard, point guard?
A: Not really. A lot of coaches ask me that question a lot, and I tell them I’m a basketball player. I can play both positions.

i like it and I particularly like your hightlight ExG
rec’d. Everyday it is easier and more exciting to have Tyreke Evans as a King.

Believe it or not, not many players can call themselves "basketball players"
After watching “Gunnin for that #1 Spot”, the E60 piece, and several interviews, I can see why he calls himself a “basketball player”. Nothing will distract him, he doesn’t give a crap about anything else, just basketball.
This man’s life revolves around basketball. his brothers began training him as a little kid; he eats, sleeps, dreams basketball.
This dude will give you a 100% in practice, won’t get in trouble at the clubs (the shooting incident was just bad luck IMO), and you won’t hear him complain. He is the definition of humble and he will be a great “basketball player”

I like basketball players. We could use a few
They’ll still call him a “combo” guard. That must be the most unhelpful adjective in basketball. A “combo” guard can be: a shoot-first PG , an undersized 2, a 2 with a good handle, anyone that plays in the same lineup as Kobe or LeBron, etc.

hey, it worked with the spartans
why can’t it work with basketball?

Someone please tell me
That’s not how he shoots. The ball is all the way back behind his head! Ayi, David Thorpe where are ya?
Victory is tasty.

Remember....
Some of the greatest shooters ever had ugly forms..
For example, Bird used to bring it from behind his head as well….And I’m not even gonna get started on the ugly form of the greatest Kings shooter of all time in Peja..
Im not at all trying to compare Evans to those two great shooters, but rather to reinforce the notion that form isnt everything-

Mitch Richmond
Putting the ball behind the head during the shot actually creates distance between the ball and the defender. I would classify the technique as a good thing.

Agreed 916 and G.
but rather to reinforce the notion that form isnt everything-
- kevin cough martin -
iashwash – let’s hope all things can be tweaked to perfection when it comes to Tyreke.

Evan's shot mechanics need to be reworked
His shot differs from the other ugly shots mentioned in that he doesn’t square up his shot he uses a whole lot of arm in his release. He also shoots the ball off his palm for more of a shot put shot. Great shooters release it off their fingertips and get better rotation and on the ball.
Some tweaks here and there with a decent shooting coach and he should improve. I don’t know if he’ll ever be a knockdown shooter but that really depends on his drive and work ethic.

Form Schmorm
I don’t give a shit if he shoots it from his ass. As long as it goes in…

… and as long as he doesn’t dribble from same.
I wonder sometimes how Ricky Berry would've turned out

It really does
most players mentioned had to do some work on thier shot. Martin, for example, still has a funky shot, but it looks a lot better than it did when he got here. Particularly on the speed of his release.

If you have bad form on your shot
its important to have the same bad form every time. I don’t like if that far back behind his head though. Here at home, DGs problem is that he doesn’t have the same form twice in a row.

It seems....
Evans has all the tools to be a real talent in the league. The issue seems to be, can he play PG, and how will his ability to play point, or lack thereof, effect the growth of the young bigs? And how will Evans fit with Martin? Will the Kings have to move one in the future? How will it all work out? Any visions?…

I figure it will all work out fine.
Just wait.
Hope

Word, Ultra.
I can’t wait for next season and that expensive NBA league pass bill. It will all be worth it – unlike this season.
Having a one-two punch like Tyreke and Kevin has potential to be pretty awesome if Tyreke truly “gets” the point.

Have any of you looked at Kevin Martins form?
I like to call it ugly but effective :-)
by Beagle12 on Jun 29, 2009 5:24 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Your right
but Kevins shot is only ugly on how he gets it up to his release point…once its up, his shot is fairly textbook. The worst form I ever saw for the Kings was Gerald Wallace…,he set the ball on the wrong side of his head with his forearm in front of his eyes, so that he had to tilt his head back so he could see under it. I can’t believe any of his shots ever went in.

Micheal "The Animal" Smith-
Dude had a pimp lean going on in the middle of his shot and it rarely went in the hole.

I maintain I'm right on Wallace
because I don’t think what Smith did could even be classified a shot. I forgot about him. I also used to be amused by Bobby Hurley never realizing the bottom of the ball had to get 10 feet off the ground in order to go in.

Spoken like a true
non-point guard. you think that’s how johnny flynn answers that question? what about RR? (i can’t even bring myself to mention his full name anymore.) Sigh. Evans is going to be great -as the 2-guard that forces us to eventually trade Martin, because our two best players can’t play together.
by IrishSlim on Jun 29, 2009 8:55 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
How do you know that?
The two haven’t even played together. Seeing as how Kevin plays much better off the ball and Evans is an initiator, the argument could be made that the two would pair well together. He’d at least be a 1 that the defense would have to consider, unlike Udrih.
I have to believe that Petrie & Co. agree. Why would they draft someone who’s game made their best current player obsolete? Sure Sac was in a position to not be too picky but Petrie’s track record leads me to believe he knows what he’s doing.

Because he was the best player availible, period.
I think the worries of him playing effectivley next to martin are valid. Why couldn’t he play effectivley next to Salmons?

i tend to agree a bit
not that evans won’t be successful running the point for us, but if someone truly is a point guard, they dont shy away from saying it.
this may be a bit extreme, but to me there isnt much difference between the question posted or
“can you play point guard or small forward?”
“i can play either…i’m a basketball player”
by sactoreg on Jun 30, 2009 4:57 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I fear
We are venturing into “paralysis by overanalysis” at this point.
The guy said he could play multiple positions. Petrie thinks he can play multiple positions. Suddenly that means he and Martin can’t play together…before even a single game has been played?
Give me a break. Let’s allow Westphal to get these guys on the court together and see exactly what we have before we go Chicken Little.

fyi. Jerel McNeal from Marquette was added to our summer league roster. Good pickup IMO, especially if he can stick because we only have one backup SG assuming we don’t re-sign McCants.
by VenomySnicket on Jun 29, 2009 9:49 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
good pickup indeed
i was wondering why this kid didn’t get drafted. Either way a good cheap, backup that just might blossom if he gets some time (which is a possibility with KM getting injured and all)
