Front court help...

Alade Aminu

Has anyone seen this guy? He went undrafted and I remember people talking about him being a late first early second pick. He's 6"10" with a 7' 3" wingspan and he's athletic and only 21. It looks like he needs to add more weight, but he excels in pick and roll situations and getting out into the open floor and running.

Very few guys that go undrafted ever turn into something, but I think we should take a flyer on him. The price is right and we are going to need 3 d-league type players to fill out the roster.

What do you guys think? Anyone remember watching him?

Guys I'd love to bring in

Jerel McNeal, G, Marquette
K. C. Rivers, SF, Clemson – Solid rebounder for a SF, and can shoot the three. I’m a Clemson fan, so I’ve seen a lot of Rivers. He’d be a great bench addition.
Antonio Anderson, G, Memphis – Great defender, but not much offense. Dahntay Jones?

There is some nice talent in the undrafted pool. I think all three of these players have NBA ability, among others.

I love Jeff Adrien, PF, UConn, but apparently he was already snagged by Memphis.

Some undrafted FA news

leo lyons would be nice to bring onto the summer league team, he had a nice ncaa tournament for missouri. he’s 6’9’’ and plays both forward spots.

Lyons is playing for the Pacers' summer league team

how about

charlie villanueva. he will be an unrestricted free agent beacuse the bucks wont offer him another contract. i think this would be a good addition to our SF/PF position. 6’11, versatile scorer. he averaged 16.2 ppg last season, while playing for only 26 minutes! plus, he is young and still developing.

by fatalerrorfoundyou on Jun 30, 2009 12:29 AM PDT reply actions

Soooo

U wanna start Charlie V over JT? Way to slow down JT’s development and playing time. I have seen Charlie play and he is not going to help us on the defensive end of the court except to take the ball out of the net after the guy he is guarding scores

I'm a simple man

All I ask of my athletes is they have eyebrows. Charlie may be the nicest guy in the world, but he’s a scary looking dude.

With the 4th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Tyreke Evans, STUD out of Memphis.

That's his brother Al-Farouq

Alade is okay, he’s big and athletic but really uncoordinated so he’s not really that effective. I don’t really think he’s going to stick around because big men with bad hands don’t tend to make it in the NBA.

by nbrans on Jun 30, 2009 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for the clarification, nbrans

I guess the old saying is true – one man’s Alade is another man’s Al-Farouq.

I don't think it hurts to take a look at him at the summer league

Checking his profile on DX, it seems he did well at the Portsmouth tournament when utilized correctly, and did well in pick and roll situations. If his upside were Chris Anderson, intensity and all, I’d be cool with that; he’d be inexpensive as well.

Josh Heytvelt should probably be another big that deserves a look in the summer league. He has a offensive skillset that might be able to fit this team well.

Neither is really a big

We need help at PF/C. Hedo and Charlie V are more SFs, wings (which we have a few of). Both are large but dont block shots or rebound well, and are perimeter oriented. So I dont think these guys really help to shore up an area of need.

But, I do prefer him to any of our SFs. I’d trade one of them for a BIG and sign Charlie V—maybe even for the dreaded MLE. He’s still rather young, and I think he will do well in a system that suits him—like ours.

Verajao or Okur or Gortat

Lower their expectations and rise to met them

Okur plays no defense and won't want to come off the bench

Varejao likely doesn’t want to come off the bench anymore either.

What about Stromile Swift? Cheap, and a good bench shot-blocker.

Don't really like Swift.

He’s not a starter only because he’s never been interested enough.

Regarding “coming off the bench.” No one wants to come off the bench. So play better than the guy in front of you. Thompson and Hawes are not bullet-proof yet. Who wouldn’t love it if a free agent got signed without giving up crazy money, and then he played himself into the starting line-up?

A purPOWEsed situation?

Leon Powe, a bay area native, is a restricted free agent this summer. I haven’t heard any news on what is going to be his likely destination, but I know he is a favorite amongst Boston fans. Powe could possibly be the hard-nosed leader the Kings need in the front-court. He lacks offensive prowess yet I could see him averaging around 12 and 8 in a situation like Sacramento. He could go from one of the best sixth-men in the league to a solidified starter which would do miracles for his confidence and game.

He may be happy with a 3/12.5 or a 4/14 and I don’t think the Celts would match that as they are preparing to make another run next year at the Lakers

Feedback please. I may be way off with some contract estimates so tell me what you guys think.

by SugaB on Jul 1, 2009 1:15 AM PDT reply actions

actually, Powe would be a great fit.

He is a bit undersized (surpise) but he would bring that toughness that seems to be in style this summer

Also, according to hoopsworld it looks like the celts are cutting him loose, so he is an unrestricted free agent. However, I don’t know how long it will take him to heal from his knee injury….I can’t remember what it was

by Ellimist on Jul 1, 2009 3:12 AM PDT reply actions

Torn ACL

And healing from that injury is 4-5 months from what I saw on the Internet. I was thinking along these lines myself, and he would be great off the bench; I don’t really think I would start him over JT like SugaB mentioned above, but he is gonna bring toughness and rebounds every night. The Kings have already begun to go into that direction: why stop now?

He’s not as talented as Ike Diogu, but showed more consistency over a longer time period this year when looking at the stats (February to April). The fact that his hometown, Oakland, is close by has to be a plus for him as well.

I wonder if

knowing that Blair was available at 31, the Kings regret having traded for Sergio Rodriguez. That is to say that they made the trade assuming that Blair would be long gone.
