2009 StR Community Draft Board: Pick #18

Blake Griffin, Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, Hasheem Thabeet, Stephen Curry, Ty Lawson, James Harden, Jrue Holiday, Demar DeRozan, Jonny Flynn, Jordan Hill, Jeff Teague, DeJuan Blair, Earl Clark, Eric Maynor and Terrence Williams are off the board in the first 17 positions on our board.

Reminder: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is draft board, a list with the order of prospects you'd like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we'd take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Petrie or anyone else would choose in a slot.

Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick's choices. Poll will remain open until 8 AM PDT on Saturday.

Lawal

Smart kid, hard worker. Maybe a Haslem type as a third big.

Gerald Henderson

Not a position of need, but I think he’s got an argument for BPA at this point.

I pick the Zohan

Casspi is going to be a good player in this league.

PSYCHO T!!!!

Who better to be our 1st big off the bench than Psycho T? According to Ford, a lot of people are rethinking their position on him after he measured up better than expected at the combine. I think he will be a very solid role player for a very long time.

Hansbrough

I’m a big fan of him, personally. As I’ve said here before, I’m a UNC fan. I found it amazing that people were really high on him last season (Player of the Year), and so down on him this year. But he clearly was not better than Griffin this season (hence the drastic differences in draft position). But he’s still a helluva basketball player, and has a competitive drive like nobody else. Hansbrough is like the Allen Iverson of tall white guys.

I think Hansbrough will be in the NBA quite a while. In the Fanhouse Podcast featuring TZ a few weeks ago, someone (I believe it was TZ) mentioned that the NBA always has a place for guys who bring hustle, energy, determination, and a decent skill set.

(Side note: If you haven’t listened to the podcast, you should. It’s going to dredge up some bad memories about this year’s draft lottery, but there is just a ton of great discussion. /End_TZ_Mancrush)

All of that being said, I still am surprised that Hansbrough is getting this many votes already. I like it, but I’m surprised and I’m not sure whether or not I agree.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

Hansbrough for me too

Interesting Hansbrough note

Learned from FreeDarko yesterday that Hansbrough is about a month older than Dwight Howard.

I agree that Hansbrough will probably be a decent role player

but he has virtually no chance of ever being more than that. He’d be a nice addition for a quality team that needs some hustle off the bench, but the last place team in the league has much bigger needs than a role player. I’d rather roll the dice on somebody that at least has a chance to be something special in the league.

by Charlieb on Jun 5, 2009 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hansbrough bandwagon

Looks like he has NBA size and athleticism. So maybe he’ll transition to the NBA game better than previously thought. I’m not saying he’ll be Kevin Love or Carlos Boozer, but is it out of the question that he could come close?

by ttylerbballcamper on Jun 5, 2009 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pretty much

He doesn’t have the refined skills that either of those two have. And as Ex G mentioned, he’s already 24 years old. He’s much closer to a final product than any of the other prospects.

by Charlieb on Jun 5, 2009 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

James Johnson

although I like a lot of these guys, Lawal, Hansbrough, Green, Casspi, Mullens. If the Kings got any of these guys at 23 I would be happy.

James Johnson

not Section’s johnson. I placed him higher so sticking with him here.

Is it too early...

…to add Wayne Ellington and Jeff Pendergraph to the list?

by corbin on Jun 5, 2009 1:55 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Ellington wouldn't be a bad addition.

Not sure Pendergraph is really a 1st round talent.

by cabz on Jun 5, 2009 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mullens

is not a risk here, and could be the steal of the draft.

Lower their expectations and rise to met them

by left hand on Jun 5, 2009 2:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I almost picked Mullens

but I went with Johnson. I’ll go Mullens next.

by Charlieb on Jun 5, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I went BJ Mullens

But I could have easily went Gani Lawal or James Johnson. I also probably would covet Derrick Brown even though he isn’t on anybody’s radar right now.

D Brown is climbing the boards

had a nice combine, comes from a strong PF program (Brian Grant alum there if I recall), he is tough. I don’t know if he makes it to #31 but also don’t know if #23 is too high, depending on what else is available.

Would you take Hansbrough over Brown?

Nope

Brown would be a good guy to add to the list pretty soon

> Hansbrough, IMO. And I’m not anti-Hansbrough.

I'm not either

But I think Brown has real upside. His strengths are: athleticism and defense. Sounds a bit like Thabeet, only Brown can be had in the lower part of the 1st round.

8 inches?

Thabeet measured to be just over 7’1 at 7’1 1/4 without shoes. He has a wingspan of a guy 7’6 1/4. That’s where the 7’3 thing comes in.

Brown measured at 6’7 1/2 without shoes. He has a wingspan of 7’2 1/2.

8 inches? I’ll say there is about 4 real inches of difference there. Brown is a superior athlete. I take Brown.

all obvious knocks aside

the Mark Madsen comparisons, etc.

The guy performed admirably at the combine, he comes from a championship program, is well coached, so he has the pedigree, he was the Naismith college player of the year and he has the all-time scoring title from one of the most storied of college basketball institutions.

Discounting all that he has wrong, there is a whole bunch of impressive right.

Besides, how can you not want to cheer for Psycho-T?
