Around SBN: Watch Out For Cowboys UDFA Tim Benford

According to two sources with knowledge of the situation, neither [Kurt] Rambis nor his representative has negotiated potential terms of an offer. And while the Kings appear poised to do so, those potential discussions might not occur until the series against Orlando ends. In the interim, fellow candidates Paul Westphal (former Phoenix and Seattle head coach) and Tom Thibodeau (Boston associate head coach) might be brought in for a second interview.

If reports of Westphal's

handshake agreement are true, I wonder how much he likes sitting on the back burner while the Kings…. do nothing.

Sam mentions it in the article
There is also the question of Westphal’s patience, as he was interviewed May 13 and clearly could have been hired by now if he was the team’s top choice.

That would certainly suck. You interviewed almost a month ago, the Kings shared glowing reviews with the media, and now you sit around and hear nothing.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

Agreed

But if you’re unemployed, you deal with it.

This may be the only place where the supply outweighs the Kings’ demand. I’m OK with the time that this is taking.

And 1 perhaps very stupid point – Given the economic situation that the Kings are in, every week without a head coach is a week that they are not paying a head coach. Now, I realize that the contract will be the contract, regardless of when the coach is hired. But they don’t have to start writing checks until they have hired him. Perhaps that is a small, small factor here.

Correction

“But if you’re unemployed, you deal with it.”

Westphal is not unemployed.

I too wonder about his patience. Its one thing to be patient when management is trying to come to a very important decision, its another thing to be patient if you think you are just being used as a negotiating ploy with another coach and the team has already decided that they will not be hiring you.

by PWfan on Jun 6, 2009 11:49 AM PDT reply actions

Fair enough

If he is not patient enough to wade through this process, he is not patient enough to coach a rebuilding club coming off of a 17-65 season.

My point is that there are plenty of fish in this sea, and Westphal is no bigger than the other potential catch. This isn’t Phil Jackson that we’re talking about.

My point is not about patience

My point is

“its another thing to be patient if you think you are just being used as a negotiating ploy with another coach and the team has already decided that they will not be hiring you”

Nor would I accuse Petrie of anything. From what I know of him he is an upstanding guy. For all we know he may have already told Westphal that Rambis is their guy if they can get him for a price they are willing to pay.

by PWfan on Jun 6, 2009 12:17 PM PDT reply actions

I think your second point is half right

I’m sure there’s plenty of behind the scenes stuff that we don’t know about. It’s very possible that Petrie’s been in contact with Thib and/or Westphal after their interviews and has explained to them that he’s taking his team because he needs to right coach to lead and rebuild this team. Hell, that was probably one of the big points during the interview. Petrie and the Maloofs know they need to pick the absolute right coach for this franchise and part of that involves being patient and understanding the process. Even if Westphal thinks he’s being used as a negotiating ploy he still needs to wait and show that he wants to be coach.

Patience

Petrie is notorious for sitting on his hands before making any decisions. It takes that guy an hour to decide which sock to put on first every morning. It might be December before we get a new coach.

Petrie comes up with the ultimate money saving maneuver

and simply lets the players coach themselves. Kings go to an 82 – 0 record since the other team doesn’t know how to counteract “no plays”

Ummm

Teams followed the “Kenny Natt experience” closely to monitor, however unlikely, this possibility. I wouldn’t rule it out, but I don’t think the Kings are likely to do as well.

Yeah

but it ends always by giving the ball to himself (and possibily traveling).
Anyway, wasn’t the “no plays” phylosophy giving us a 17-65 record?

I’m curious about what do you (in America) think about Marco Belinelli

by Panzerfaust on Jun 7, 2009 8:43 AM PDT up reply actions

I really like Belinelli

most other people aren’t so hot on him though. He needs to use his great ball handling skills to get to the bucket more often instead of settling for a long-range jumper and his defense needs work. Overall, the ability to be a nice player is there, he just needs to take advantage of his abilities.

by submison on Jun 7, 2009 8:52 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Beli has talent

He’s just on the wrong team in the wrong place at the wrong time. Truth be told, I don’t know much about him in his playing abilities (I know he can handle the ball and shoot some), but at the same time, he needs to play more to get a real good feel for him. I just don’t have that feel for him.

Wow...I thought he'd have only negative comments

He has good skills, and can play quite well both 1 & 2. He’s been struggling a lot because of Nelson, and had a little revenge this year when he had the chance to play a little bit more, putting on good games with consistency.
You may call me blindly patriottic, but I’d take him over Beno (as a backup, obviously not as a starter), also thinking he’s way cheaper.
It would be funny to see Beno playing under Donnie, shooting straight from the midcourt line

he is a summer league superstar

regular season he is inconsistent. Of course, with the GSW and Don Nelson, inconsistency is their only consistency.

He reminds me a bit of JJ Redick – he can flat out shoot, but has not yet developed enough other parts of his game to put him on the floor for consistent minutes. He is a role player at best right now.
