How to win more than 17

While building through the draft is always fun, lets figure other ways we could rebuild this 17 win team.

Good teams have been built through the draft, and it certainly looks like its working well for the Trail Blazers, however its not the only way to win games. We could do like the pistons did and build through the free agency period, or maybe a trade to acquire a talented player.

We have a few key assets, mainly k9's(woof!) expiring contract. Teams are scrambling to clear cap space for the star studded 2010 free agency period and while thats all good and nice for the New York's of the NBA, doesnt work so well for the Sacramento small market teams. K9 (woof!) could bring home a few good players simply because hes 9 million off the books next season.

For example, before this great run the Nuggets went through this post season, there was talk that Mello could be had for the right price. While not many like mello, i for one love his game. He is the type of player that would be a great benefit to have for K-Mart. Double teams everytime down the court would free up Martin's shot and hopfully bring his shot percentage back up to 47% plus. Im sure some team will want to rebuild and is willing to shed a star player for expiring contracts and draft picks. Maybe Stoudamire?

Since we are a cash strapped team right now, one of the many teams that needed financial assistance from the NBA this past season, a free agent does not seem likely for us. But for the sake of arguement, we are going to be roughly 8 or so million under cap this season. With that much money we probably couldnt sign a Boozer type player but could bring in a David Lee? I dont think its worth it however so just save the cap space for bigger and better things.

Now finally the draft. There is alot of speculation going around that we might be able to land the lil Spainard that we have been watching for so long. If we grab Rubio at 4, somone like Casspi at 23, and im hearing alot of Beaubois so perhaps him at 31 or somone like Darren Collison if he falls.

If you guys don't know who Casspi or Beaubois are, Aykis16 made a great post. I suggest you go read it and inform yourselves!!

As for our current team, lets hope that Donte Greene blossoms into a stud, K-Mart stays healthy, Beno gets his head out of the millions of dollars he took Pietrie for and plays well, JT/Hawes continue to progress as solid bigs, and Noc stops bitching!!!

Lemme know what you guys think.

The Pistons built through trades, free agency and the draft

Billups – FA. Wallace/Wallace/Hamilton/Wiliamson – trade Prince/Okur – draft

You’ve got to have upper echelon talent to get upper echelon talent. The only way to build the Kings right now is the draft. Then, either develop these current players, or trade them for better one’s.

I’m on the boat of development. The Kings have time unless they badly mess it up.

I agree 100%

The Kings should build the team the right way, through top notch drafting and development now, and later shrewd personnel moves.

I agree with the draft and development

The draft seems the best outlet to enable the Kings make some moves sooner rather than later.

I would love to try and pick up a guy and seem him become a star on the Kings. Ariza, Barbosa, Deng, Lee, Sessions? and sell some tickets! That is an essential tool to building a team.

I feel that there are numerous trade opportunities the Kings could create using the draft and existing players. I also feel that it will be hard to bring a star to Sacramento the franchises current state. I would rather like to see us go after a few guys that I named off above.

I like your thinking,

when there’s a choice of a 1-way, 2-way, or 3 way i too always opt for the three way.

Especially if the other 2 was Megan Fox or Neve Campbell

me too Pook

I could have voted for K9s contract but I don’t see that having much value until the trade deadline and even then it can get us a piece but not the piece if that makes sense.

I think we have no option but to keep drafting (hopefully well) until we have the pieces to trade with. Kind of the Portland option except they haven’t started trading their pieces yet.

It's one of the reason's I'm on the boat of Westphal

He has had a history of using young players.

By K9(woof) i can only assume you mean

Either Signing him to a six year max contract in 2010 or hiring him as coach and making him the highest paid coach in the league. Either way, that gets my vote.

Ariza

Is he really a star in waiting or just another guy who looks good playing with good talent?

IMO

signing any free agent to more than a one or two year deal before we get a chance to see what our team’s identity ends up being with the new draft picks and the new coach is a mistake. Although I’d love to see the Kings make a splash in the FA market, I don’t see any players (outside of Turkoglu, who is unselfish, versatile, and has played in the Princeton before – still probably too expensive after this playoff year) that are worth tying up our money right now on – especially as we are still rebuilding and would probably have to overpay to lure a decent free agent to Sacramento.

not to mention

the financial bind this team is in. we practically begged Chi to take salmons and bmiller to unload cap. i dont see any free agent signing this season.

Having cap space for next year gives any prospective coach the mental wiggle room to augment whatever the core looks after the draft dust settles.

I am just wondering if we can expect to still have the services come summer next year as I trust Petrie in the FA market over anyone else the Kings might bring in. Hopefully he gets an extension.

17 Wins +

If we don’t fire our coach mid-season we probably win more than 17 games, so that sorta answers the question right there.

Can’t wait for the next installment, How the Lions win more than 0.

Funny that you mention that

Hiring Matt Millen is just about the only way I can think of that the Kings could win less than 17.
