Kings Reach the Coaching Search Stretch Run

Clearly, this coaching search has been the most exciting thing to happen to the Sacramento metropolitan area for ages. But like all great things, including Arrested Development and Crystal Pepsi, it must come to an end. Sam Amick reports that a decision will be made soon, no other candidates will be interviewed, and -- as expected -- it's all a matter of time and money for Kurt Rambis, with Paul Westphal as the insurance choice.

I'd be OK with all choices, most pleased with Tom Thibodeau or Rambis. How about you?

Unrelated to the coaching search

I thought the article had a great point about how Petrie runs these workouts himself. He’s got SAR and Fat Lever on the floor with him as well. So, you’ve got three former players who know exactly what a good player looks like on the floor. And then you throw in the crew who are watching from the sidelines (Jerry Reynolds, etc.), and I feel good about the draft.

Yeah G

That’s very important to point out. Because even the coaching tidbit is coming down to money, the hands on part of Petrie with players is an important to him evaluating personnel. I wonder if that would happen with a head coach around. Probably would, but that’s another advantage of Petrie. Westphal is who he is.

Can’t imagine why Westphal isn’t Petrie’s choice at this point.

Interesting decision the Kings have to make

1. Kurt Rambis – learning at the feet of Phil Jackson, long-time assistant, some head coaching experience, tough hard-nosed player in his day.
2. Tom Thibodeau – above average defensive coach, no NBA head coaching experience, highest risk-reward of the three.
3. Paul Westphal – plenty of head coaching experience, mixed results. Would seem to be able to right the ship and at least bring some modicum of professionalism to the position.

Other factors – the Kings low salary demands may be offset by the fact that this job is currently the only open position in the NBA. They can’t afford to make another poor decision after Musselman/Theus, so do they go with someone (relatively) safe like Westphal and bypass the chance that Thibodeau/Rambis could be in over their heads? Do they worry about offering the position to Rambis, only to get SVG’d at the last minute if Phil Jackson decides to retire?

I can see why this decision is taking so long to make. We aren’t talking about an elite group of candidates – the Kings can’t afford to miss on this pick, and they can’t afford to get dumped at the altar either. They obviously need to process every bit of available information before making a decision.

I voted for Rambis in the poll, but after considering all the factors I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Westphal is the pick…and ultimately the right choice here.

I know I'm in the minority here

But, I can’t see Thib or Rambis having the impact that Westphal will have. I’m biased; I think I’m always right.

You said D-bag.

Good stuff.

This coaching search has me slightly confused and in need of a drink. I chose Westphal but I would be ok with Rambis.

I want to know why Rambis would be chosen

And why Westphal wasn’t.

He has proven himself on multiple occasions

and he is going to hire terry porter as an assistant. Seems like a great match to me, he is not afraid to develop young talent, and he has proven that he can win in this league.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Hope

Yeah there's a catch here

And, I’m betting it’s not on Petrie. Maybe he likes Rambis just as much, and he’s just waiting for the Lakers series to end.

I’m less comfortable with Rambis than Westphal, and it’s just a gut feeling.

Here's the plan

We hire Rambis or Westphal as the head coach. We then trick Thibodeau into signing as an assistant coach:

Joe Maloof: Congratulations, Coach! Here’s the contract… just sign right there…

Thib: Okay… what’s that word in front of “Coach” that you’re covering with your finger?

Joe: Nothing. There’s no other words. Just sign there.

Thib: That word… that word right there, under your finger…

Joe: You’re talking crazy, Coach. Don’t be crazy. Just sign. Sign!

You may be onto something

… Thibodeau isn’t under contract. Maybe the process is being delayed, because they are wrapping up the details, to bring Thibodeau in as the lead assistant for either Rambis or Westphal.

by Mystic on Jun 9, 2009 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Doubt it

Why would he leave Boston to be an assistant in Sacramento? He’s not currently under contract, but there’s no doubt that Boston would re-sign him to another 1-year deal (like they’ve done the last couple of seasons).

by Exhibit G on Jun 9, 2009 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

Hence the necessary trickery. Does anyone think the Maloofs have gotten where they are today by playing it straight all these years?

by AnotherStupidSN on Jun 9, 2009 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

This is let's trade for LeBron pie in sky the delusion

… of course. But, Thidodeau considers it for resume building. He has nothing left prove at Boston. If he wants to become head coach, Boston only gets him interviews.

Come to Sacramento, take a young defensively challenged team, improve them and his stock goes up.

a coach, any coach, someone, anyone, please

I agree with much of the concise terms used by Otis29.

I voted Westphal after being originally swayed away. I believe he would be an asset and with the assistants mentioned, I just don’t see any room for complaint.

Rambis worries me in that should the fellows south state complete what seems an inevitable championship run that Phil Jackson may call it a career thus leaving a vacancy. Should that occur, the Kings are in danger of being Kinko’ed – same copy, different original – and that would leave an unneccessarily unfortunate mark on the process.

Thibodeau is too much of a gamble, IMO, at this time. I am still disappionted that more interviews were not done.

It looks like the Kings will have a Head Coach by next week and that is the best choice of all.

I voted for Rambis just because I loved him as a player and he has learned from the best

but I suspect that Paul Westphal is going to be our next coach and I’m fine with that. I think that any one of the 3 would be fine with Thib being the high risk/reward candidate. My only concern about Westphal is from his time at Pepperdine but in the end I’m not sure what the lesson to be learned from that is anyway.
