Kings to Hire Paul Westphal
Sam Amick and the Bee are reporting that the Kings are going to hire Paul Westphal. Plenty more analysis to come, I'm sure, but I wanted to get this out there as a discussion thread.

Wow-
Maybe this means Phil Jackson is going to retire! Now go get those cool, good looking assistants you were talking about Paul and let’s get this thing going.

Congrats Paul!!
I picked him in the poll and I’m happy for him. Let’s hope he can get us back to respectability. This is the beginning of a new era…

My dreams of a top draft pick have already vanished and now this? Maybe I was hoping for too much to happen because I am having a hard time getting excited right now

I've always said I wouldn't say much
on this as long it was a reasonably experienced Petrie pick – and that it wasn’t one of the guys I feel negatively about (see Avery Johnson)
Put together a great staff and Help us Paul!!!

Reaction Predictions
Bill Simmons, ESPN: Paul Westphal? Another re-tread? Should have just hired me! At least I would have brought excitement, and how hard could it be to be a professional basketball coach in the NBA?
John Hollinger: He’ll add 4.3 wins per season, statistically.
TrueHoop: Link to Sam Amick’s write-up.
TZ and/or Section214: Something ridiculously thought-provoking as to why this is a good thing, far from the worst thing imaginable, and at the end of it all, we all feel warm and fuzzy about the hiring. Playoffs baby!

I am not excited by this guy, he’s a re-tread with spotty track record. I don’t see him so much as the new hire, I see him as the next Kings coach to be fired. I’ll give him a season and a half…
Ultimately though, its about players, so hopefully we will acquire enough talent to overcome the negligible difference he is bound to make.

I'm pretty happy but not about this Amick tid bit.
And while Rambis was believed by most to be the front runner, sources say discussions between the Kings and his agent, Warren LeGarie, stalled for too long while Westphal waited for a verdict.
Money should not have been the decider here.

Petrie made a comment a few days ago that stated, to paraphrase
If someone wants the job than they may have to accept the circumstances available. – dammit I can’t find the actual quote. It sounded like dealing with Rambis’ agent was a problem – and
With the Lakers in the midst of the NBA Finals against Orlando, Rambis was adamant that he remain loyal to the Lakers and focused on the task of winning a championship. Westphal, meanwhile, had grown impatient enough that sources say he was close to pulling out of the race.
If Westphal pulled out because he felt he was not desired and just a place holder for Rambis than dealing with Rambis’ agent would have been a nightmare. Sounds like the choice was a fait accompli
by betweentheeyes on Jun 9, 2009 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
After nearly a month of reading about who should be coach I felt like Westphal was going to be the decision anyway. I also feel that it fits because of the young players on the team and what he has done before.
Simply put, I would’ve rather had Jordan, Messina or maybe even Thibodeau, but in the end I had a feeling it’d be Westphal.

and he is anxious and looking forward to being the Kings coach.
I have repeatedly stated and continue to state that the biggest negative is the poor PR that money has played in this search. This guy, Paul Westphal, seems a wonderful choice, it is a shame that he seems like being the least expensive was the deciding factor.

This announcement should shake the NBA to it’s very core, and make the NBA Finals an afterthought.
The national media has awoken a sleeping giant with their merciless coverage of this plucky 17-65 squad. And now Paul Westphal has been hired. A man – check that – a GOD that Kings management has kept stashed under the Kings team store for the past several years, waiting, waiting, waiting for just the right moment to unleash his fury on an unsuspecting league.

Well the Westphal hire at least got you a new Kings fan!! LOL
Obviously I am thrilled. For the Kings as well as the Westphal family. If anyone deserves this job its Paul Westphal. Yeh I know no one deserves anything when it comes to the NBA but if there were such a thing as someone deserving of getting back as a head coach in the NBA its Westphal.
Not only are you getting a great coach you are more importantly getting an outstanding person who will set a great example for OUR young players. He is a great teacher.
Sure I know that in the end its going to be all about wins and losses and most certainly that is going to be a great challenge for Westphal. You dont take a team that won 17 games and take the the next year into the NBA finals nor probably the playoffs. what I hope to see is player development, fun basketball and significant improvement going forward.
Be patient , you got yourself a gem that has been overlooked to long.

Defense
I would not be surprised if he emphasised good defense for a number of reasons.
First because the team is young they need to learn that offense wins games but defense wins playoff games. Also defense can make up for deficincies with a team that does not have a consistent sustained offensesive attack. So I think defense will be the first order of the day then offense.

Do you have any insight to his assistants he would hire?
by STH114 on Jun 9, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dont lose sight
That hiring assistants depends on certain variables that a head coach cannot control. For instance in todays NBA assitant coaches get paid very well. I think when Westphal was hired by Dallas he was the highest paid assistant in the NBA.
Another factor is that there may be some assistants that Westphal would like that are under contract and if the team they work for does not allow them to leave there is not much a head coach can do .
I do think that Elie will be considered after all Westphal worked with him in Dallas but he is under contract and obviously the Kings are not going to be throwing money around.
Other than that I have no idea.

Sam Amick just said
Porter and Ellie were both mentioned in the interview process and Gavin also mentioned the possibility. He also said Ellie had a team option. We’ll see. If he can place Porter, Ellie and SAR on the bench, with Coachie hanging around, then I think the young guys will have one of the best learning environments going in the NBA. I’ll be very happy with that staff.

nice read PG
like the angle of how well Paul Westphal meshes with GP and seems to be a more logical choice as a teacher not just of young players but frontcourt players in particular.
Probably makes no difference but the upcoming point guard work up would be enriched with Westphal’s presence. I also would like to see Westphal’s opinion of Holliday as the two are similarly sized and Holliday is ambidextrous (Paul Westphal is fully ambidextrous, dude could shoot jumpers with either hand)

I'm totally cool with this
Westphal has experience and was the only one that actually fits Petrie’s cryteria . If it would of been one of the other two hired , i would of been questioning every coaching decision they made next season . Glad it’s over and feel relieved

Great point hectic

I think we will still question Westphal but definitely to a lesser degree than with the other two.

We questioned Adelman at every turn
He’s still going to be the coach with the most amount of victories and winning % in the franchise for many years to come.

As Head Coach Adelman Won 395 games
Out of 624 tries. That’s a 63.3% Winning Percentage. Unless a head coach coaches for as long as he did, and with the type of teams Rick had, I think it’s safe to say that will be held sacred for awhile. (The Franchise topped or tied the best wins mark, with Oscar Robertson on the team then no less, 5 times under Adelman.)

Agreed
Now instead of questioning every coaching decision , it’ll just be every other one . Still feel relieved knowing we have someone at the helm with some real experience . I think it was a good basketball decision . And hell , if we got him on the cheap , then it was a good business decision as well .

Hope we can start here
a sort of “dinasty” such as Sloan’s in Utah. Our players need to know that the guy who’s coaching will be there next year, the year after and so on.
