Vegas Summer League, Game 2: Kings vs Warriors, Open Game Thread

Hopefully the boys got some inspiration from section214 and will be ready to roll at 5PM PDT, when the young Kings take on the equally young Warriors. I'm not sure the GSW coaches will send Stephen Curry across from Tyreke Evans; if so, call the medic. Reke is gonna hurt him.

Try to keep the "OMG where's a link!" comments to a minimum. Here's the scoreboard, so please also keep the "OMG what's the score!" comments to a minimum. Enjoy, and go Kings. (I'll again have a recap in the morning.)

Ok today I am sure that the Vegas games are up and ours are as well on p2p4u.net. I got the mod to put the games up so we can watch. It’s not a crappy feed like justin tv so all kings fans check that out.

QD is leading scorer for Toronto

Douby out plays DeRozen with 21pts on 8 of 13 and 3 or 5 from the 3. He also had 5 rebounds, 3 assts, 1 blk and 2 TO’s in 35 minutes of play. DeRozen was 2nd in scoring with 20 pts on 9 or 20 and 1 or 2 from 3.

Good wishes to Quincy, the guy could use a break.

This guy shouldn’t be judged by summer league because last year Derrick Rose was terrible in Summer, but anyone know how that turned out?? ROY

So, what. What’s wrong with protecting him on the defensive end during summer league so that he can focus on the offensive end.

I’m not saying that’s what’s happening, but would that be a bad thing to do if it was?

1st quarter...

thompson looks bigger and i’m still amazed by evans’ quickness—much quicker than i thought. offensively and defensively, i’m starting to see a little westbrook in evans (without the hops but he compensates with his quickness).

"When talent is roughly equal," said Westphal, "the competitive guys win. You have to have that in this league. Here's a perfect example: We (the Phoenix Suns) drafted Tim Perry and Dan Majerle the same year (1988). Now, if you get a stopwatch for down and back (baseline to baseline sprint), Tim Perry was faster than Dan Majerle. That's a fact. But if you had them race, Dan Majerle won. I can't explain it. street ball, ugh.

Somehow, he had that drive, that fire, something inside him. If you have enough guys like that, your team starts winning again."

Sure

but if the ball falls into his hands and he has an open 6 footer, you’d like him to be comfortable attempting that shot. I dont think he is at this point.

Not many teams can say that their rookies are the three toughest guys on the team.

Very nice drive to tie

What I liked most about it was that he knew what he was going to do while bringing the ball up. He motioned JT to come up and set the pick, then motioned for him to leave the paint so he could isolate his defender and take him to the rack. Nice stuff. Finished over and through Anthony Randolph too.

by SeattleRoyalty on Jul 11, 2009 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Good game overall

Good PG play from Evans and would have more assists if his teammates did a better job of hitting shots. Would like to see him take fewer pull up shots but he’ll eventually learn.

Thompson still needs to cut out on the fouls. 9. Yikes! And also needs to attack the boards a little more, but I don’t think he’ll have a problem doing that during the regular season given what we saw from him last year.

Omri is a nice shooter and shows good hustle but could do well to slow down a little and let his decision making catch up with his speed.

Brockman’s hands can’t stay away from the basketball for long. He always finds a way to get to it despite his supposed physical limitations.

by jveezy on Jul 11, 2009 7:16 PM PDT reply actions

Grrr. Nice game.

Curry impressed in the second half for sure. Damn him.

’Reke’s double-double, 5 assists, 5 TOs and 2 steals doesn’t explain how many times he got by his man at will. His speed and penetration is very Rose-like. As others have mentioned, ’Reke probably would have 9 assists if players made their shots.

The OC(tm-kfan) had a much better showing. I’d like to see more out of Greene next game.

by JETisKing on Jul 11, 2009 8:15 PM PDT reply actions

Greene is showing a marking improvement in all aspects of his game

except maybe shot selection. I’m especially impressed with his man defense against Randolf at the end of regulation. That was spectacular, plus he had 2 blks. For a guy who wasn’t supposed to know how to play defense last year, he really has upgraded his game. He’s also averaging 7 rebounds.

Offensively he’s handling the ball a lot but is only averaging 2 TO’s in 29mpg. And, it’s not his 3 pt shooting that’s the problem since he’s only taken 4. His decision to take some of his shots is poor. Shooting fall away jumpers from foul line extended, and refusing to give up the ball on some of his drives are things that have to change. But, on the plus side, he is going to the rim often and hard.

Quick note

Didn’t watch either of the games but just from the boxscore and reading this thread is clear to me: just like it was pretty dumb to kill Evans for not being enough of a PG in the first game, it would be dumb to overrate his performance today.

IMO, the most important thing to get from tonight’s game was that he came out with a different mentality and that’s going to be an important part of his game when regular season comes. Being able to change your style of play a bit depending on the situation shows he’s very coachable and will do what it takes to get the job done.

PS. His rebounding was pretty encouraging though

by eduardo_m7 on Jul 11, 2009 8:56 PM PDT reply actions

Most impressed with his crunch time scoring

With the Kings down late in the game, Evans drove to the rim on 2 straight possession and scored. That’s where the KIngs were really lacking last year, a clutch time scorer.

by HighTops on Jul 11, 2009 10:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I watched both

I think his style of play varied little in the two games. And I think he was similarly efffective in both games. His stats (especially assist and turnovers) may look a little different, but the approach was the same. in short, and this is nothing new…he is a score-first slasher who can get to the line at will by using his ‘slitherability’ (Westphal’s words). he is a great rebounder at either guard spot, he looks like he’ll defend well and he runs the break like a bull.

by DustyG on Jul 12, 2009 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Brockman won't be able to play Center in the NBA

He’s doing a respectable job in the VSL, but the center competition is no where near the NBA level. Even JT hasn’t developed the post move he’ll need to play center behind Spencer.

I’m really surprised that we haven’t seen Bryant. I can only assume that he hasn’t showed enough, and they’ve already written him off. Westphal did mentioned that they might be making additional moves. Maybe a Vet Big is in the future.

Also Bryant is slow.

He’s a bad matchup for the “centers” that Golden State and Detroit put out there, who were more of Power Forwards or even SFs.

Well that's always a two way street.

Last yr Natt got critisized for playing small ball with Nelly when we had the definite advantage in size. But, your right that Bryant is slow, but I’d still like to see what he can do rebounding wise. If were going to improve our rebounding as Westphal has said, we need to start looking for help.
