Vegas Summer League, Game 3: Kings vs Bucks, Open Game Thread

Will Sacramento's third game be the first win? Will anyone care either way? Once again, all eyes on the point guard spot, where Tyreke Evans will line up across from Brandon Jennings. I wonder if Young Money thinks Reke is all hype ...

7:30PM is the start time on the West Coast. Blake Griffin's debut precedes our game. Donté Greene and Joe Alexander should be a fun (quasi) match-up, and hopefully Jason Thompson will come alive. Looking forward to more Omri Casspi as well.

I would like to see the Kings have Omri play the two guard

so that Tyreke plays the point defensively as well. He’ll have to guard the point during the season (unless he turns out to be much better at defense than Kevin Martin, which is probably the case now, then he’ll guard whoevers better of the 2 or 1). I want a literal Tyreke v. Jennings.

I agree with you aykis. I would love tyreke to go head to head with BJennings. Omri also is suprisingly fast running the floor and a much better ball handler than expected. The 2 would be a great spot for him (at least in summer league).
Plus I get wet at the thought of evans posting up Jennings over and over.

Pumped up

TZ, it seems like you are really pumped up this year to watch the Summer League action. I have never enjoyed watching Summer League games but this year I am really looking forward to them. Last year was fun too but I feel like there is something to get excited about with this crop. Evans and Casspi are fun to watch and even the matchups (Evans vs. Curry, Thompson vs. Randolph, Evans vs. Jennings) are very intriguing.

I might even watch some of Blake Griffin’s debut. I must be losing my mind..

Their beast

is 50% at the stripe, no blocked shots and no steals. Yeah, I’m hating. He’s definitely ’Reke’s main competition for ROY. That’s a HUGE hill to climb but I think ‘Reke can do it if the stars are aligned. Damn Griffin’s developing a 3pt shot. Crazy.

by JETisKing on Jul 13, 2009 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

Griffin and Evans are probably the main competitors for RoY. Griffin probably has a greater chance with more media coverage and the Clips will probably be better than us next year (but it is the Clippers).

Harden is my dark horse for RoY. He’s been impressing.

by eduardo_m7 on Jul 13, 2009 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya thats why he's my dark horse.

To be honest, Evans has a better chance at RoY mainly because this team is not star studded and he will get his chance to shine.

Harden has Durant and Westbrook, as well as Green, so he might not “shine” as brightly as the others, but he will play well.

Don't forget about Jennings

This dude has some serious passing abilities, the contest should be among Tyreke, Griffin, and Jennings.

Give him a few years and he’ll be an elite “pass-first” PG.

He just has the eye… its something that can’t be taught. Its something Nash and Kidd have + he is 50x more athletic than both of them combined.

19 year old Reke is probably an improvement over Beno now. He might not start the first few games but he’ll get heavy minutes and he will definitely have the starting job at some point this season, probably for the majority.

Griffin’s a stud power forward, especially when you pair him up with an interior defender of Camby’s caliber. I don’t think Blake will ever be that great on the defensive end, but offensively he’ll have few equals. Also an excellent rebounder.

Out of the way, you know, way out there. Like living out in the Outback, only not. Damn cultural references. Never heard the term “Sydney sider” before. That must be an Aussie thing.

so how would you describe Sacramento?

for those of us who have no idea (and in all likelyhood wont be able to ever get there)

the closest i’ve got is watching The Mentalist (claims to be set in Sacto?)

by Spoz of Oz on Jul 13, 2009 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Ummmmm

The Weather sucks this time of year. Where you get a break because it’s Winter right now, just ask the many Sacramento residents who are being inundated with the heat right now. They don’t particularly enjoy 110 degree days, and I imagine you Sydney folk don’t either. Mellow might be used to it, and I know Aussies are too, but still, nobody likes 110 degree heat (that’s 43 celsius), or even if you’re lucky, 37 degrees celsius. Yes, it’s that hot during summertime.

The best time of the year is in fall, followed by Spring and Winter (it rains a lot sometimes when there aren’t droughts).

The city’s nickname, and I hate Kozimor for even calling it the “Capital City”, even though Sac is the capital of California, because the city is usually called the River City for the 2 rivers that make up it’s borders, or run through it.

The city’s culture? Ugh, I won’t bother. Let’s just say it’s not like Sydney. Spoz, and I say this knowing the city and no longer living there, if you ever visit, the best time of year to go is at the start of training camp or basketball season (October/November).

The Mentalist? I’ve never heard of it, and I’m not sure I want to. Any show that claims it’s in Sactown is retarded.

Thompson has 2 rebounds in 18 minutes

if he keeps this up, I don’t think there is any way him and Hawes can be a legitimate starting duo

by thelettere on Jul 13, 2009 8:24 PM PDT reply actions

2 things:

1. If he can’t rebound in summer league against scrubs, how is he going to do otherwise during the season?

2. Rebounding cannot be taught – it’s largely an instinct for where the ball is going to go. Boxing out techniques can improve it somewhat – but ultimitely you have to enjoy and have talent in it in order to be successful.

I could understand a bad shooting night, giving up a lot of turnovers – those are fluke stats. But his lack of rebounding is a real cause for concern – remember that the stats from preseason that carry over to the regular season are the hustle stats. I think that applies here.

Well, maybe I’m wrong about that, but I’d like to think you would anyway.

Nope

I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t tell him not to say honkey or cracker either. I don’t tell people what to say and not what to say when it comes to kind of stuff. You want to be ignorant: That’s your decision.

Whether he was being ignorant or not is another question, but I’m not the one who can determine it. I just simply don’t have that power.

Injustice and real problems in the REAL WORLD exist. I would love StR to be immune from that, but the reality is, nothing is immune.

You want a homophobic statement MM? How about Prop 8? I didn’t vote for it. I thought it was stupid, and still do. I find it shameful it passed, and so does my family, all of whom, as far as I know, aren’t homosexual.

You want me to get pissed off about something that matters? Prop 8. There, it’s settled.

Fine.

You’re not a bigot. I already had a pretty good idea of that.

Personally, if somebody starts tossing the “N” word around me, I tell ‘em to take the racist bullshit somewhere else. Same with this. But that’s me, I guess.

No, you’re right pookey, you don’t have the power to make someone say or not say anything on this blog. That’s TZ’s job. But you do have the power to decide how you’re gonna react to what is said.

Laughing at homophobic “fag” “jokes” is one choice you can make, and telling the “joker” to cut the crap is another choice you do have the power to make.

Anyway, it’s not about power, it’s about doing the right thing. A law like Prop 8 passes in large part because we all tolerate bigotry way too often.

I know damn well that if some nitwit was making racist comments about, say, African Americans on StR, that guy would be told in no uncertain terms by a bunch of us to take it to a Ku Klux Klan blog or something.

And whether or not it made the nitwit STFU, it would be the right thing to do.

You're 5th paragraph is absolutely correct

Outside of that, MM, I would rather not push this beyond the envelope it has been pushed.

Awhile ago someone (who it is doesn’t matter) posted that this board was stupid because we didn’t recognize that the best players in basketball were always going to be black. We can all recognize the absurdity of that statement, and while there is a real touch of racism in that, the true level of absurdity is the lack of thought put into that statement.

If all the best players are black, than that means all the best players ARE black. Is that true? No, of course not. There isn’t a person on this place that I’ve seen truly believe one player is better than the other solely based on the color of their skin.

So, that’s why I ignore it. This isn’t about the “right” or “wrong” of racism/bigotry. This is a lot more about how to fix it and move forward.

Exactly my take

This is especially bad for sophomores JT and Donte when they can’t even compete in summer league. There may be some moves made before the roster is set.

by KingsFan on Jul 14, 2009 7:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Kings games are going to be very slow

With Kevin and Ty getting to the line 30 times a game.

I really wanted to see JT go all out and get that 10th PF. FAIL.

JT

pick it up big man, you better be 25/10 against the d-league scrubs

Favorite part of Reke's line

is the 5 offensive boards.

most of his assists came in the first quarter

Then they started double teaming him and pressuring him more.

by cbsf on Jul 13, 2009 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

You almost expect 19 free throws for him

but 9 boards from your PG, 5 of them offensive, thats just impressive.

by Aykis16 on Jul 13, 2009 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

between him and Kevin Martin, though,

there’s going to be some long games. A lot of time spent at the free throw line.

by cbsf on Jul 13, 2009 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I kinda like the 2 personal fouls.

He’s been able to play decent defense and close the lane without giving up too many fouls over the past three games. That’s a good sign and he’ll be able to stay out on the floor for a long time in a real NBA game.

by jveezy on Jul 13, 2009 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point

Jennings fouled a lot, which is why his steal stat line was so good. He won’t be able to reach as much in the NBA. Still, he’s definitely a 3 stl per game guy in his prime.

by Aykis16 on Jul 13, 2009 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, he's quick.

The first thing Evans said in the interview is that he needed to take care of the ball a little better.

by cbsf on Jul 13, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

The 14 assists and 7 steals becomes 6 assists and 3 steals when he’s sitting on the bench for extended minutes because of foul trouble.

by jveezy on Jul 13, 2009 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Also he's going to be playing behind Sessions.

Completely forgot about that.

He didn’t seem too happy when that option was picked up.

by jveezy on Jul 13, 2009 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

he was handling the ball over 3/4 the game and there were some reaching calls that didn’t get called, even though its summer league, for the first time in a while non-kings fans are excited about this guys potential

Off night I guess.

Although his rebounding has been off for the past three games.

Well it’s better that he’s having it now in Summer League rather than in the regular season.

He thinks he's a 5'7'' PG....

judging by his horrendous entry pass and his refusal to dunk.

by Juan Primo on Jul 13, 2009 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know

I think its a combination of a few things:

1. He’s being asked to play Center. Not his position.
2. He’s gained 15 pounds without really playing basketball. Not used to his bulk yet.
3. Brockman is stealing a lot of the boards JT would get on the defensive end at least. That could explain the rebounding.

9 PF in each of the last 2 games

Truck has been telling him what he can get away with and how to use his body. I guess JT is just a slow learner. But, he better learn quickly, or GP is going to have to sign 3 more PF’s to fill in when JT is in foul trouble.

I heart Easy already

I’m getting an Evans jersey ASAP. Impressive stats, impressive play — getting to the line 19 times might not happen in NBA, but think of all the teams that are gonna be in the penalty because of Reke that allows our real FT guys (Kevin, Hawes, Garcia) to just bludgeon them.

by elfboy_ on Jul 13, 2009 10:44 PM PDT reply actions

Tyreke,

Making Petrie look good. Definitely better than Jennings. Although 14 assists is impressive.

Caspri I’ll give a break to, but Thompson has not impressed at all. Lets hope the bulk didn’t slow his game down too much.

Griffin shows why he was the #1 pick.

by nothingbutnet on Jul 13, 2009 11:27 PM PDT reply actions

the bad news…the kings are going to be bad next year. i’m sure. yet on the positive side that means another lottery pick, plus the draft next year is far more talented than this year’s, so we can springboard to success. more positives, tyreke will be legit. he’s an all star talent, and once he has a real shooting guard along side him, not some mediocre point guard, he will create insane mismatches, creating points, rebounds, and assists as numerous as the stars in the sky. we have a good start, but a long way to go. i just hope we dont trade the talent we have, and that JT learns to use his newfound weight to box PFs—and he has been playing center, which is clearly not his position— out. if all this, plus the development of the mouth watering talent that is donte greene is to work out, the kings have a chance to be quite successful. i hope to god our stars aline.

We can rebuild them: better, stronger, $6 million cap spacier

Forgive the old TV show reference (bionic SFX), but being bad over the next couple of years isn’t actually a disaster. Add another top-5 draft pick next year to Kevin & Reke and that’s our nucleus. JT & Hawes are nice players, but they don’t exactly scream franchise tag. (At least not yet, or until we rebuild them bionic style).
