The article elaborates
Spencer was keeping a commitment to a basketball camp that he has some family ties to.

So ...
he skipped it for a family wedding and a basketball camp? Sounds like 2 very valid reasons for me.
Sugar ... water .... and, of course, purple.

Indeed, but...
Were these events planned at the last minute? Because it sounds like he was expected by Petrie & Co. but bailed out at a very late date.

My guess
the wedding was last minute, the basketball camp wasn’t.

the League's schedule
was released just a few weeks ago. That was last minute.
He may have read the schedule when it was released and said “Holy Natty! I’ve got the wedding and the camp those days!”

The game schedule itself may have been
But I believe the dates of the summer league itself have been set for some time.

but
what is keeping him from playing now?
Probably the only thing that bothers me is that he might show up “to cheer on his teamates” Why don’t you get in the freaking game, this 0-3 squad needs some help!
One thing that is aparant is that Evans could use more practice on how to use a pick and roll….He attacks 100% rather than pass to a flaring JT or a rolling Brockman. Hawes, being one of the more profient pick and pop players on the team, could have gotten him to look for it a little more.

I think Spencer's not there...
…because he’s kind of an immature, selfish douche.
But we knew that.

Ouch!
Strong words. What are your reasons??
Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!

my reasons? well...
…look at the quote. No one in authority told him “Spence, it’s cool, water under the bridge, the public is making too much of a big deal of it, it’s more of a suggestion thing, not a requirement.” Spence is the authority for that. The 19 year old authority on it. Couple that with the fact that he still apparently hasn’t reached out to management or his teammates. (If he had, Amick would know and would have included it in his blog – instead he writes something like “Not sure this will smoothe things over with management.”)
I don’t think Spence is incorrigible. Lots of talented 19 year olds are selfish and immature and they grow out of it. But I do think they need to be called on it – that’s how they gain some insight, and reevaluate what they’ve done. Spence reads STR. He wants us to like him. Let’s call him out when he’s a douche.

Not for nothing
But how many 3rd year guys are playing in summer league this year, and how many of them were lottery picks? I’m not trying to let Hawes off the hook here – I’m just trying to draw some comparisons.

If Spence had played, then the answer would be every single one...
…whose very young team only won 17 games and now has a new coach and new system and was asked by management to play.

That doesn't remotely answer the question
I know that Nick Young is playing, though I can’t recall if he was in the lottery. I know that Douby is there (a 4th year man). I know that Garcia and Martin both logged a little time in their 3rd years.
I get it – you’re pissed that he didn’t play. I’m disappointed, and I am concerned by the miscommunication (moreso than the fact that he didn’t play). I do believe that there has been a rush to judgment as it pertains to this situation.

Section for such a goodnatured witty guy...
…you can be awfully judgmental, condescending and snippy when people dare to disagree with you.
I’m not pissed. I am not particularly emotional about the subject. I think “disappointed and more concerned by the lack of communication” is more accurate. I think Spence handled it in a selfish and immature way, and should be called out on that. You may disagree. Fine with me.

My apologies
I honestly was not trying to be snippy. But when I ask an honest question and receive a pointed answer, I can certainly understand how one might be led to believe that the conversation has now headed in that direction. Please go back and read what I posted without emotion or tenor, as that is how I intended for it to be read.
The reason for my original question was to determine whether it is a bigger deal that Hawes is not playing, or is the communication flap the more pressing issue. My opinion at this time is that it is the communication piece that is of greater concern. I honestly don’t believe that Hawes’ appearance or non-appearance in this league translates into one more win or loss for the Kings this year.
What I can’t get passed is why his lack of appearance was a surprise to the organization. I think that the Kings need to address that with Hawes (they probably have already). In other words, if it had been known for at least a couple of weeks that Hawes would not be in Vegas due to other commitments, would this be less of an issue? I know that it would be for me, as I really don’t put a lot of stock in summer league play. That doesn’t mean that I’m right, but I have not seen an alternative point of view that would have me alter my view.

appreciated
and I agree, for me it’s mostly about the communication.

This franchise has serious communication issues
Not just with its fanbase, but seemingly between management and player, management and coach, and coach and player. This goes back to the tail end of the Adelman era.
I mean, Geoff is a low-key, quiet guy, that’s a given. But the vibe the last few seasons seems to be that these guys aren’t all on the same page. They need to reverse that perception IMO.

Exactly
There is a huge disconnect going on now with EVERYTHING.
GM, owners, players, city, arena, reporters, etc. etc. Everything lately is either false, misquoted, or not understood in the proper context. There are some major communication issues going on with this franchise and nobody is on the same page.
With Petrie entering the lame duck phase and nothing set in stone for the future on the arena front, it scares me to think of what the future holds if this franchise continues to be this dysfunctional.
