Honestly
Tyreke Evans and Kevin Martin might be one of the best backcourts in the league, especially when you combine Evans driving and K-Marts shooting. Double one and you probably leave the other open.
And to Ailene Voisin. Going 5-0 in the Summer League would mean the same thing as going 0-5. The players are different, the coach is different, the style is different, and the officiating is waaaaaaay different. Summer League is to see how you’re players have improved and how they can work together. You shouldn’t be worried about wins or losses. Whats that going to affect? Summer League Ping Pong balls? It really boggles my mind how Voisin is still on the Bee staff. At least we have Amick.
I’ll be worried if we start the season 0-5 though. Although knowing the NBA we’ll start with a 5 game road trip against the Lakers, Orlando, Boston, San Antonio and Dallas.

and for our second home game on a back-to-back
We’ll play last year’s All-NBA Team, w/ the 2nd and 3rd teams as their bench.

I don't understand...
If teams switch their PG to K-Mart, isn’t he just going to use his length and shoot over and drive right over them?
by HarbirD on Jul 16, 2009 11:30 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Exactly why I love our backcourt
If opposing teams switch their points to Kevin Martin, he’ll annihilate you even easier than Tyreke will, at least now. Remember how much problems Antoine Wright of Dallas bothered Kevin last year? If they have to switch him to Tyreke this year and put Jason Kidd on Speedracer, Kevin’s gonna go for 50. It’s truly a pick your poison backcourt now.

I understood the point but didn't agree either
I don’t see that many backcourts that could shut both Evans and Martin off.
The author also kind of lost me when he wrote the following about Joe Johnson and LeBron James
They can’t create easy baskets with a pass. They can’t run a team.
I’m gonna take a wild guess and say that LeBron IS able to create easy baskets for his teammates

Ya...
I really didn’t get the Joe Johnson comparison at all. Evans and Johnson aren’t really similar players at all. Quite frankly, Evans best comparison is probably LeBron James. James shoots and finishes better, but they both can set up their teammates and rebound the ball while also playing good to great defense. Not to mention their driving ability. Evans is smaller and I’m not saying he’s as good as James, but that their games are similar.
Quick question though, watching the Kings v. D-League team. Anyone know why Casspi switched his jersey mid game to the 52? Ripped? Did I miss something?

Man I would hate to hope that we add a talent like Joe Johnson to our roster
because we should be expecting so much more for our #4 pick? Remember, these guys aren’t guaranteed superstars. If Evans turns out to be a JJ and not a LeBron, he’s still miles above Beno.

Martin and Tyreke
Could pose match up problems on offense . However i think it’s fair to say that , they may struggle defensively against certain match ups
by hectic2 on Jul 16, 2009 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
agree
the article’s argument didn’t make sense. having KMart and Tyreke in our backcourt is a huge advantage for the Kings. opposing coach’s are going to have match-up problems with their backcourt.
put me in, Coach

Also agree
If Kevin Martin could be neutralized by an opposing point guard, teams would have figured that out by now. It’s not like Beno or Bobby were too big a threat to have a SG guard them.
I also don’t understand the logic that adding another scoring threat makes our backcourt somehow worse.

If Opposing PGs Guard Kevin...
I think he’ll lead the league in those crazy-looking, one-handed, shot put makes while being fouled in the lane. Only, instead of being fouled on his arm somewhere, it’ll be pushes in the back, as his length will get him over any 6’2" PG guarding him.
Think of the potential of Kevin penetrating and dishing off to a cutting Tyreke who can finish at the rim with his size against forwards/centers after Kevin draws his man in a double team.

I don't agree on the Joe Johnson comparison..
Johnson is a great outside shooter and more of a finesse player, Tyreke is almost the opposite of that; he muscles his way into the paint and he isn’t that great of a shooter yet. LeBron James is way better of a comparison, and hopefully Evans develops an outside shot like LeBron has.

One particular item
that I think that Evans could emulate that LeBron does well is to stay more upright on his drives. It seems that Evans gets really low, which is good for driving, but bad for court vision. Being more upright with head on a swivel is by my account a trademark of guards who deliver effective passes off of dribble-drives.
As an aside: When bringing the ball up, Evans seems to also use his long arms to keep his dribble height low—it’s almost like he barely dribbles when he crosses over, just changes hands. Lowering the dribble height is a good way not to get the ball stolen and to keep the ball within reach should a passing situation arise. He should better use those same long arms in combo with his body to shield the ball—in addition to his nasty crossover.
It seems like Tyreke will be able to straighten his shot out. It looked pretty bad last night (worse than in other summer league games), but his hand was hurt, I guess.

Funny
Maybe they won’t stay with the Kings that long but I hope people realize Evans and Hawes are not going to hit their peak for another 7 to 8 years. By then JT will be an “old” 30 and Kevin will be a 35 year-old veteran

I’d hate to point out the obvious but Westphal has only been hired as coach for a month and has yet to hold a practice. Our rookies have been on the team for 2 weeks and it’s July 16, 2009. I imagine it’s going to take some time and work to fix the teams bad habits. I heard the time table was around 2 years, not 2 weeks.

That Royal Pain blog is awful. Wow. It’s mindboggingly that he thinks Lebron doesn’t create easy shots for others or can’t run a team. He really classifies Lebron as a ball mover type passer. Unbelievable. His comment about McGrady never being more than just good is maybe even more absurd. McGrady’s was a bonafide megastar. His 2003 season when his PER was 30.3 is one of the best individual seasons of all time. I don’t know how you can think he was only just good.
I wouldn’t be comparing Evans to Joe Johnson either. Two totally different players. Johnson makes his hay from the outside and isn’t good at getting to the line. Evans struggles to shoot and his greatest attribute right now is attacking the basket and getting to the line. I would say a lot of their games are mirror opposites.
If one is going to make the rosiest comparison, I would say Evans is similar to Wade. Wade played point guard his rookie season too, he’s classified as a combo guard just like Evans, he attacks the rim nonstop, his outside shot was suspect when he first entered the league just like Evans though his stroke was much better, his arms extend forever just like Evans. I think Wade was far less selfish than Evans showed in college and in summer league and balanced his scoring and involving his teammtes more seamlessly.
I think a closer comparison is with Stackhouse, who was also a suspect shooter, a rim attacker, could be a black hole.
by Galeto on Jul 16, 2009 3:21 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
T-Mac had great talent
But, he was not a dominant player in that sense of the word that is applied to LeBron James. Your comparison’s with Stackhouse seem closer to right (something that freaks me out when Chad Ford said it—I didn’t believe that type of player would greatly succeed in Sacramento—but we’ll see), and Wade is probably his best case scenario.
But, yeah, the stereotype was a bit over-the-top.
