The Slovenian Conundrum...anian.

Beno Udrih.  MLE.  These two things should never have gone together.  But they have and there's not too much we can do about it at this point.  It was such an apparent problem that nobody really doubted for a second we were going to draft a point guard in the draft (even if you think he's not a point guard).  But then we got Sergio Rodriguez as well, a point guard that might benefit greatly from Paul Westphal's hopefully more up-tempo system.  So where does this leave Beno?

Star-divide

Last year, Jason Thompson averaged 28.1 minutes per game, and that stat includes when we had Mikki Moore starting ahead of him.  By the end of the season he was averaging more like 30-33 mpg, while he started out at about 25.  So lets put this in the context of Tyreke Evans, heralded as the possible future of our franchise.

There's 48 minutes at the point guard spot.  The Kings are definitely on a youth movement, so expect Tyreke to get upwards of 25 mpg for the season, possibly nearer to 30.  That leaves about 20 mpg between Sergio and Beno.

Let's compare the two players statistics from last year alone.

Beno has been in the league for 3 more years than Sergio and is turning 27.  Sergio, meanwhile, is entering his 4th NBA season after just turning 23 (It should be noted that its a contract year for him).  If we're going youth movement, Sergio is definitely the better option.  But how about production wise?  Sergio played in a system that slowed him down and did not play to his talents.  He didn't get many minutes and wasn't allowed much time to shine.  If we double Sergio's production (in McMillan's system) and assume his production also doubles, Rodriguez averages about the same rebounds, 2.5 more assists, .3 more steals, and about 1 more turnover (Assist to T/O ratio of 2.4:1 compared to Beno's ratio of 2.17:1) and 2 less points.  So looking at it that way, and assuming that playing up-tempo helps Rodriguez, he looks to be the better player with the higher upside.

As for Beno, he's more of a scoring point guard than a distributor.  Do the Kings really need that? Tyreke Evans looks to be a better scoring point guard than Beno could ever hope to be.  Beno's FG% and scoring mostly derive from his drives to the basket while Rodriguez is mostly a jump shooter.  But could you play Beno and Tyreke together if you needed to?  Wouldn't pairing Evans with a spot up shooter and distributor like Sergio be much better?  And if so, where does this leave us?  With a 5 million dollar a year 3rd string point guard.  I.E. Kenny Thomas 2.0.  And we can't even say Woof.

So what do we do?  Well we have to get out of this situation immediately.  Yes there's a chance Beno could revive his career, but could he be much better?  We liked him the year before the MLE signing but his stats were relatively similar as last year.  And the guy is entering his prime.  If we don't act fast, his value will simply go down and we'll likely be stuck with him until his contract runs out.  That is not a good thing, especially when we'll need money to extend Spencer and JT's contracts in a few years, as well as Tyreke's.

Unfortunately we probably won't be able to trade Beno by himself.  We'll probably have to give up an asset to go with him.  Which brings up another reason to trade him now.  The Kings have a very valuable asset in Kenny Thomas's expiring contract.  We won't have that to package with Beno in the next few years.  The best possibility would be to trade Beno and Nocioni together for someone like say a Kirilenko, which provides huge relief to Utah.  To me, Beno even with a smaller contract than Noc, is my top trade priority, because Noc is a serviceable starting SF (while the rest of our SFs are young and could use the Vet leadership) and is one less year (team option as opposed to a player option for Beno)

So lets look at some trade destinations:

1. Beno Udrih and Kenny Thomas to Philadelphia for Samuel Dalembert and Willie Green (H/T to Pookeyguru) (Trade Machine Link) - This does a couple things.  First off, and most importantly it gets rid of Beno's contract.  Second, it gives us a legit, NBA center to backup Spencer Hawes, and one thats known to be pretty damn good on the defensive end (at least better than we've ever had since Keon Clark).  Green is a throw in contract with two years left (Dalembert has two years left too), who could play as 3rd string shooting guard.  Why does Philadelphia do it?  Jrue Holiday is not ready to lead that team if Andre Miller doesn't come back (which is looking very unlikely)  and Lou Williams is more of a shooting guard.  It also gives Philadelphia $8,750,000 in cap relief they wouldn't have had next year in K-9's contract.

2. Beno Udrih and Andres Nocioni to Utah for Andrei Kirilenko and Kyrylo Fesenko (Trade Machine Link) - This would be a nice trade for us in a couple ways.  First it gets rid of our current two worst contracts.  In return we take Kirilenko's massive contract, but that only lasts for two years.  Also, he happens to be an All-Star caliber Small Forward, and definitely fits into the "toughness" vibe that the Kings have started, as well as a young, backup big behind Spencer that we get a 1 year trial run on.  The main thing here would be why would Utah want to do this trade?  For Utah it takes $4,000,000 off their cap, essentially saving them $8,000,000 that they'd be paying over the tax.  They could also look to find another team for Beno or Noc to save even more money long term.  An alternate version of this trade that might work better for the Jazz and is probably more likely is Beno and K-9 for Kirilenko, which saves them less money short term, but more money in the long run.

3. Beno Udrih and Kenny Thomas to Chicago, Kirk Hinrich and Donte Greene to Portland, Luol Deng and Martell Webster to Sacramento (Trade Machine Link) - My least favorite trade, this has us taking back two long term contracts, albeit to a good player in Deng, and a promising player in Webster.  This trade sets us back longer, but adds more talent.  Portland gets the point guard they've coveted in Hinrich as well as young talent in Greene, and Chicago gets some cap relief (thats all this trade is for them).  This trade has the potential to backfire badly if Deng doesn't live up to expectations, if Webster doesn't live up to promise, and if Greene becomes a star.

4. Beno Udrih to New York for Jared Jeffries (Trade Machine Link) - This is basically just cutting a year off Beno's contract.  For New York it gives them $400,000 more to work with in 2010.  And Beno could conceivably start for the Knicks next year.

5. Beno Udrih and Tony Allen to Philadelphia, Andres Nocioni to Boston, Samuel Dalembert, Brian Scalabrine, and Gabe Pruitt to Sacramento (H/T to haze0945) (Trade Machine Link) - This deal, proposed by haze in another thread, works very nicely for each team. Sacramento gets rid of its two worst contracts and gets a nice backup big in return as well as two expiring contracts (and a young 3rd string point guard included in that), Boston gets a veteran who could provide solid minutes off the bench and increase their bench (Boston almost tried to trade for Noc last year), and Philadelphia gets a point guard to wait for Jrue Holiday to develop and a backup to Iguodala. I really like this trade.

I think this deal would be possible. We get the big man we need and the 76rs get rid of his contract which we can handle, plus they get a quality point guard in Beno and a back-up to iggy in Allen. For the celtics, they would be getting rid of expiring contracts and get someone to spare Peirce, also they free up money to resign Glen Davis.

KINGS WILL BE 09-10

Those are just some possible trades.  But looking around and playing with the Trade Machine, there aren't too many possibilities unless you want to give up a Jason Thompson or a Spencer Hawes. There are a lot of teams out there that have a bunch of expiring contracts. Everyone's gearing up for 2010.  It will be hard to trade Beno, but I think its something that has to be done.  There's really no minutes for him in Sacramento, especially if Sergio performs well in Westphal's system (and if Sergio instead becomes the 3rd stringer, we've heard how discontent he was in Portland).  And if Sergio performs well, why not keep him as our backup for a few years (but please God not for the MLE. We need to learn our lesson about contract years).

And the most important part about trading Beno is that it has to be done soon.  His value will not grow anymore barring a huge season, and that will mean that either Tyreke Evans growth has been stunted or Tyreke is going to be a bust, neither of which I want.  Get 'er done Petrie.

To end I would like you to watch a highlight video of Beno from two years ago, and an artists rendition of a Beno highlight video two years from now if we don't manage to trade him.

Philly trade I'd do (for obvious reasons)

I’d do the Utah deal although I’m not thrilled anymore of the idea that Kirilenko could cock-block Greene and Casspi than Noc does now (conceivably). The only possible silver lining here is that AK47 can play both the 3 & 4. So, that is good. Plus if Ak47 gets hurt than it’s no biggie. You get to play your players anyway.

Don’t want Deng period. (Which may put me in the minority. In that case: Good!) Therefore the idea of losing talent for no reason makes little sense. It’s one thing to give up on Donte Greene if you don’t believe he’ll develop for you, but it’s another to trade him away before he does.

I do like the idea of acquiring Jeffries for Udrih’s contract. It gives NY a PG who could conceivably raise his value in D’Antoni’s system while giving them a simple solution there for the next few years. I think NY would prefer to keep Jeffries’ contract and trade it though. Saving a few hundred K would not likely make a difference. So, in a sense, I think the Kings would be ecstatic to move Udrih for Jeffries, but unless NY is desperate to get another PG for D’Antoni’s system, I don’t see how it would work.

Let me offer a counter to your New York proposal: Taking Curry and Jeffries on for Noc and Beno. You offer 4.8 million in savings to New York for 2010 FA while taking Curry and Jeffries (2 albatross’s that New York can’t get rid of) and they get to eat the long term savings. New York needs to shed space somehow, and Sacramento would love to get rid of Beno and Noc at the same time. (I would be shocked that the Kings WOULDN’T do this deal. It’s New York not wanting to commit that type of money long term to Beno and Noc and would rather have diminished cap space. Perhaps by waiting they can figure out a way to take Curry off the cap if he is having a physical problem. But, if he’s not, and they don’t have a way to take him off the cap for medical reason’s, than I suspect New York desperately needs a way to carve out space for 2010. This is one way.)

Good post Aykis. This is now no longer a shock, or even an unexpected bonus, but an expectation. WE ARE WATCHING YOU!

That Curry trade is interesting

Assuming he gets in shape, he could be a decent backup to Spencer for a year or two. I don’t expect the Kings to be players in 2010 anyway and this sheds our two worse contracts a couple years earlier.

One little nitpicky thing.

Beno was drafted in ’04. Sergio was drafted in ’06. Beno is 4 years older, but has only been in the league two years longer.

The draft lottery has reinforced my belief that there are not enough bad words in the English language.

I'm more interested in his distributing

which seems to be his strength. Beno’s strength is scoring. Reke can do plenty of that. We can pair Reke and Sergio offensively rather well, I don’t know about Reke and Beno.

Beno can play for other teams albeit as an overpaid backup. Question is can he do it effectively.

I would love to move Beno

But it might be better to move him separately from Noc. They both have some value, but their contracts make it difficult to move both together unless a third team is involved. I posted this in another thread.

Utah trades Boozer to Miami & Fresenk to Sac
Miami trades Wright, Blount & their 1st round pick to Sac
Sac trades Noc to Utah

I don’t know how to do the fancy link thing so here’s the Trade Machine Link: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine

Sac gets Fresenko & Miami’s 1st for Noc and $4.5M in cap space. But we save $13.5M in Noc’s contract over the next 2 yrs. Plus we end up with $20M in expiring at the trade deadline. That should be enough cap space to move Beno.

Miami gets Boozer for 2 expiring and a 1st round pick (late 1st rounder)
Utah gets Noc & $6M in cap space for Boozer & Fresenko

"They both have some value"

Now that’s the power of self belief HT. Beno probably has little value to any, and whatever value Noc has is to the team that wouldn’t mind playing him and paying him what’s he due the next 3 seasons.

I don’t want to move them because of they’re cost (althought that’s a benefit too), but mostly because I think the Kings should go full blown young and let their players develop (or not) for the next 2 years. Than, try something else if it doesn’t work.

Just link it HT

We can make it popup even if you don’t remember to click the box that will make it automatically do it. (I do that automatically now since TZ pointed out we can do it that way.) But, HT, it’s that chain link next to the tree and quotes just below the subject line. Easy to do. (You can figure it out. Not nearly as confusing as the old SBN where you had to type the html in all the time.)

With the Heat being so close to the lux tax line I’m not sure they do it. But, HT, I like the idea and I would certainly do it.

ShamSports & the Trade Machine

both have Miami already over the Luxury Tax. But with Haslem, O’Neal & Quinn expiring next yr, they should be able to clear more cap space before the end of the year. If not $3M over the Tax is a small price to pay to make Wade happy.

Boston might still be interested in Noce.

I’m thinking the Magic might be interested too (another guy they can use to bang up LBJ).

I think a lot of “almost-there” teams would be interested in Noce if only to take advantage of their present window of opportunity.

Boston needs to deal with VC in Orlando, Orlando needs to deal with LBJ in Cleveland, everyone in the East has to deal with Artest and Kobe in LA, Melo in Denver…

If a deal goes down for Noce, it’s probably going to be to a championship caliber team.

There can only be one Noce!

by NoceOne on Jul 16, 2009 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes Noce

I think the best offer we are going to get may come at the trade deadline for one of those teams that’s almost there. Let’s not forget he’s a fairly good player; the problem is that he’s a bit overpaid for what he does. He could be a hell of a complementary player in a system like Boston or San Antonio.

I think if we are able to move him by himself (for expirings or picks), that’s a win. I really don’t see the rush in trading him. We’ll get something for him at the right time, we just gotta pick our spots.

The future begins now...

Do you really think that all three teams go for this?

Sac spends $3M this yr for a backup center and to get out of Beno’s contract. Noc’s money equal Dalembert’s So, it’s a good deal for us.

Boston goes deeper into Lux tax territory to get rid of 3 expiring & lock themselves into 3 yrs of Noc. Do they really love or need Noc that much?

76er need PG’s so badly that they’ll take on Beno’s contract. even if they save $3M over then next 2 yrs they’ll pay more for Beno in the long run?

As an added bonus

Dalembert is Canadian which means he plays centre rather than center . Much classier of a position if you ask me. Definitely worth all the extra loonies dollars he’s making. That being said if you’re the Kings you have to take some trash to get rid of the radioactive. And He gives the Kings a large expiring contract to work with the following year.

Still a very good, and I think reasonable for all parties involved trade offer. Noc fits into Boston’s Championship window, and would prove to be a useful piece off the bench for them. Beno gives Philly an NBA proven PG and a vehicle to move the Dalembert contract.
