Ron Artest, the Lakers and You

Ken Berger of CBS reports Ron Artest is a Laker. Carmichael Dave of KHTK and Ramon Shelburne of the Los Angeles Daily News confirm.

Holy crap it is going to be fun to boo Ron-Ron next year. Enjoy this, Lakers fans. Enjoy it well.

so does this mean the lakers are willing to let go both odom and ariza?

Should be interesting

It’s a good place to go for Ron-Ron if he can temper his ego and fit in the system. That team is good enough to mask Ron-Ron’s declining abilities.

Yeah, they're pretty screwed

As for Ron. Yes, I see this as a perfect situation for him. Especially if Jackson stays on as coach for another year.

Ron wants a ring

He’ll be the consummate team player or Phil and Kobe will kick his Artest. This pretty much will make the Laker’s assured of a repeat.

I'm happy for Ron

Again, this is so much better for him than being here while we rebuild, as it is much better for us to have Donté Greene and Omri Casspi, which is what Ron netted us in trade.

The tough part for me will be rooting for Ron the L*ker. That part sucks.

With his robotic post moves and fear of contact

I don’t think the Lakers are worried about how he feels on offense. These playoffs showed they don’t even need him to do anything more than hack people and pull down a few rebounds and it’s good enough to win the championship.

Exactly.

However, if the kid steadily improves like he has been, the Fakers will be solid for a while (or until Phil retires). It’s frakkin scary how deep their are.

who do you guys think will win? Do you think any teammates will try to stop it or let it go hoping they both win? Can we start a over /under pool on what game it will be? We can give the money to the SPCA and the Denver battered womens home.

but in a basketball setting, as soon Bynum, Gasol, and Fisher realize that there ticket to another ring as about to get his ass handed to him by 250 lbs of crazy they’ll step in and break it up

I dunno.

Speed usually wins. Kobe has that killer flash elbow that threw off Ron-Ron’s shot for the rest of the series. Maybe they should tie their wrists to each other ala Beat It.

I think Ron-Ron could take Bynum, Gasol, Fisher, and Kobe all at once.

Well, Fisher might complicate things, but the other three wouldn’t put up much resistance. Like someone said above, I would pay to see this.

the rich getting richer.

lakers just won next year’s title.

"When talent is roughly equal," said Westphal, "the competitive guys win. You have to have that in this league. Here's a perfect example: We (the Phoenix Suns) drafted Tim Perry and Dan Majerle the same year (1988). Now, if you get a stopwatch for down and back (baseline to baseline sprint), Tim Perry was faster than Dan Majerle. That's a fact. But if you had them race, Dan Majerle won. I can't explain it. Somehow, he had that drive, that fire, something inside him. If you have enough guys like that, your team starts winning again."

There's no guarantees

Everyone was shaking in their boots that summer when LA got Payton and Malone.
Hollinger spent the whole year writing on ESPN how the Cavaliers point differential or something was so great and that LeBron would play 45 to 48mpg in the playoffs and his PER would skyrocket and they’re the best team in the NBA.
Spurs were picked to repeat as champs, how many times?

In a 5 month NBA season, a lot of things can not work out as planned.

artest brings toughness and that crazy factor

toughness were the lakers biggest weaknesses this past season. the lakers have two dawgs now—one who is all world and the other who is…well, ron-ron. they’re going to be awfully tough to beat now because you can’t out skill them and you can’t out tough them. perhaps even more importantly, even the tough teams will be less inclined to play rough because of ron-ron. think it was coincidence that the kings all of suddenly became one of the softest teams in the league after ron-ron left?

there aren’t any guarantees, obviously, but they’re looking pretty damn good right now.

"When talent is roughly equal," said Westphal, "the competitive guys win. You have to have that in this league. I wish that were true.

It’ll be a great series if both teams stay healthy. I think the Spurs still need a rebounder/big body in the paint to extend Duncan’s career. I think the damn lakers would still get them in 7 as the teams stand right now. Artest would neutralize Jefferson, while Kobe checks Manu. Grrr.

by JETisKing on Jul 2, 2009 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe. There are still a lot of variables, though:

Whether the Spurs stay healthy (I don’t think they will)
Whether Phil Jackson returns (I think he will)
Whether POR or DEN could stop the Lakers (I’d give them like 20% chance each at this point)

Love him or hate him

Artest is a monster on both ends of the court – one of the few guys left in the NBA that can dominate a game on both ends. I dont’ see this as a maybe at all. Neither Odom or Ariza bring his skill or tenacity. (Yes, Odom can be awesome every 10th game.)

I don’t think there is any “maybe” about the fact that their team just improved. They just added another All-Star type player. If he gives them what he gave the Rockets this year, the Lakers are certainly going to repeat. The only way this doesn’t work out is team chemistry being disrupted. But I guess that’s where the Zen Master earns his $$$$.

by coolcatreportdotcom on Jul 4, 2009 12:17 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did you check any of his stats for the regular season or postseason?

Shooting percentage, PER…anything? His shooting percentages were worse in the playoffs than during the regular season. And he was pretty much horseshit in the regular season.

And isn’t he the self-proclaimed “Kobe stopper”? I could have sworn it was Shane Battier defending Bryant for the most part in the playoffs.

Ron Artest’s regular season PER? 15.64 (112th in the league). His playoff PER? 12.53 (74th in the league). And he’ll be 30 shortly after the season starts.

Ron’s reduced lack of ability was masked by a pretty good Rockets team that picked up his slack in the playoffs.

If he wasn’t Ron-Ron, but had the same statistical decline playing for the Kings, you’d be ripping the guy. Instead you are about to find your third team to support in as many years.

But if there’s anybody that could corral all their egos it’s Phil. They’ll at least reach the finals. Nobody in the Western Conference looks like they can hang. I’m hoping the Blazers nab Hedo to make it an interesting fight for the top 4 playoff spots.

the

only reason why I say maybe is if they don’t resign Odom now. If they do sign him for a hometown discount, then I agree they made a huge upgrade. If not, then their starting 5 is deadly, but the bench depth takes a big hit.

Interesting times

Obviously an ideal fit for Ron, in a place where he doesn’t even need to score much to contribute. He can focus more on doing the tough, physical work that is his bread and butter, and the Lakers don’t need to worry about him squishing Kobe like a grape if he blows a fuse. I wish him well in his quest for a ring.

This might negate the Spurs landing Jefferson

In my eyes this pushes the Lakers over the top if they can re-sign Odom. However, this all depends on Ron’s behavior. For the most part his attitude was good in Houston this year, he just did his black hole on offense thing. If Kobe and Phil can get him to not worry about his offense and focus on his defense, the thing that made him an all star level player, they’ll be unstoppable.

Personally,

I don’t see this really improving the Lakers. I like Ron, but I think he’s easily one of the most overrated players in the L today. His defense is not as good as people think. Back when he was in Indiana when he had a little more speed and hand checking was allowed, Ron was a beast. Now, pretty much any guard or SF with a little speed can get past him. With the rules in place, I would much rather have a long, fast, athletic Ariza than a semi-slow, bulky, tough Artest on defense. Speed kills in today’s NBA and Ron doesn’t have that. And let’s not forget that one of the best ball moving teams is bringing in one of the biggest ball stoppers in the L. Doesn’t sound like a recipe for big time success.

The Lakers will certainly be one of the best teams in the L based on talent alone, but this move doesn’t improve them at least in my eyes. At best Artest bring good defense and good shooting, at worst…think GP in a Laker uniform (talented player who’s abilities didn’t mesh with the other Laker stars and hindered the team as a result.)

So many teams are desperate to shed money that the title contenders can almost pick up any veteran they want. I take it Houston has officially pulled the plug for franchise reboot.

Will Ariza be very good, or is he a product of the Jackson system? I seem to recall the majority of Bulls from the Jackson days performing very well for Phil and then doing nothing when they left.

by amonk81 on Jul 2, 2009 11:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He's a classic NBA role player

And he’s about to be severely overpaid.

The Rockets will be his fourth team in six years. This was his fifth year in the league and he averaged 9 pts, 4 reb, and 2 ast on 46% from the field and 32% from three. He stepped up at the right time. That’s a good quality to have, but not if it’s accompanied by inconsistent performance in the regular season. Now he’s not playing for a championship, not playing for a contract, and not playing on the best offense in the league.

On the other hand, the Lakers just got a more talented, more experienced player to fill the exact same role for nearly half the price that Ariza considered a slap in the face. I’m not gonna guarantee that the Lakers will be able to repeat, but there’s no doubt in my mind that Artest is an upgrade over Ariza, and doubly so for the price. All I can say is that I hope that McGrady shows up for the Rockets since this is a contract year. If they can’t get good value out of him on the court or through a trade, they are seriously screwed.

Never and Ridiculous

I don’t recall MJ winning any titles as someone’s sidekick.

I don’t recall MJ ever blowing an NBA Finals for his team, Kobe’s done it 3 times going into the “do it myself mode”.

MJ was always the best player on the floor the 1st Quarter through the last. Kobe usually didn’t step until the 4th.

Sadly, I’d even say Gasol was the Lakers best player in the Playoffs. Gasol was at least the 2nd best post player and based on the Finals I’d say he was better overall than even Howard.

Robert Horry has 6-7 rings? He’s not the NBA’s best SF/PF combo. Rings are not the deciding criteria.

I don’t recall MJ ever blowing an NBA Finals for his team, Kobe’s done it 3 times going into the "do it myself mode".

Kobe’s lost twice in the finals and has won four times.

I’d agree that Gasol outplayed Howard in the final series this year. Probably a big reason why Shaq is now a Cav after Howard went for 40 against them in the last game.

Sorry, still pretending he lost this year. Kobe still lost the Finals twice, both times ended his teams chances by going 1 on 5. Kobe has won exactly one has the alpha dog.

Pippen showed up? Pippen was on those Bulls teams that got annually spanked by the Pistons. Jordan was the guy who pushed Pippen to be more. Phil showed up just in time to cash in Jordan’s rise. Phil figured out how to coach but the Bulls would have won that first title with Dick Motta as coach.

Say what you want about Kobe, but I don’t think he’s scared of anyone on the court. Artest has gotten the better of him a few times in the past, but Kobe lit him up in the playoffs pretty much anytime the Rockets were dumb enough to put Artest on him.
