Can we trade with Utah already please?

And no I'm not talking about Carlos Boozer, I'm talking about this guy:

                                                       Kyrylo-fesenko_medium

Kyrylo Fesenko, Utah's third string Center from the Ukraine.

Fesenko was set to be a free agent this summer if Utah hadn't picked up his option, but they did, for $870,000.  Now though, Utah is in a bit of a pickle with Korver, Okur and Boozer all staying in their contracts.  Utah also has another nice young center prospect that they picked up in the draft last year in Kosta Koufos.  So wouldn't it just be better for the Jazz if we sent them a future 2nd rounder to take him off Utah's hands?  It also happens to take his 870,000 off the cap, which should help alleviate at least a little of the pain of Booz opting-in.

So why should we pick up Fesenko? The guy is huge - 7'1 and 290 lbs.  He's also young at only 22 years old.  DraftExpress sees his best case scenario as Andris Biedrins, and I think that's a fair assesment.  Fesenko is an excellent rebounder and shotblocker, averaging almost 1 block a game for the measly 7 minutes he averaged in 21 games.  Per 40 minutes, he averages almost 3.7 blocks and 14 rebounds.  His field goal shooting is also above 50% because most, if not all, of his shots involve him close to the rim or on put backs.  He's not meant to be an offensive threat.  But on defense and for rebounding, he can help you.

In the times when he did get some playing time, he performed well, including his career night against Houston and some guy named Yao Ming: 12 points on 6/8 shooting, 11 boards, and 3 blocks in 34 minutes.  Thats not bad for a 21 year old going against one of the best centers in the league.  That's the thing about him. For a relatively cheap price ( I really don't think Utah will ask for more than a future 2nd rounder. They really need money off the cap right now) you get a big, real center to back up Spence.

So why would the Kings be interested? Well for one he fills one of their biggest needs with his rebounding and defense.  Coach Westphal has expressed that teams need someone to do those things if they want to win, and thats our goal.  Fes is also young, and also cheap. We can pick him up for a one-year trial and have the option to sign him for longer if we think he's working out for us.  And he fits with the "toughness" theme that the Kings unveiled during the draft.  And it should be mentioned that Fesenko's first agent was current Assistant GM of the Kings, Jason Levien.

Personally, I think that getting Fesenko would be a better pickup than any of the available free agents.  We need a tough BIG, and thats a key word.  Fesenko is BIG.  Nobody else available in Free Agency really is. Gortat was, but he's going to Dallas for way more than he's worth.  Powe wouldn't be able to help us until February. Diogu is an anomaly to me. I wouldn't miss him at all if those last two games of the season didn't give me pause.  So to me, Fesenko is the best solution.  If things don't work out, fine, we tried him out for a year, didn't work.  We might go another route and pick up a guy like John Bryant, who could end up providing the same things for even cheaper than Fes.  But Bryant hasn't had a couple years of seasoning.

Young. Cheap. Potential. Tough.  All things the Kings are interested in. I say we need to give this a try.

I was gonna berate you for bringing this up

But, clearly you’re smarter than I.

On the other hand, I’m interested to see what happens here. Fasenko seems a good bet here.

I wonder if the Kings could pull off a Noc/K9 trade for AK47 and Fasenko. I’m not sure I’d want to do that, but then again, I’m also not sure it may matter.

Anyway, the other good part is that Fasenko would also be able to be locked up cheaply for next season as well (or maybe that’s just the qualifying offer).

Ha you thought I was gonna bring up Boozer eh?

Looks like the 1,000,000 for next year is an Early Termination Option. I don’t exactly know what that means.

As for Noc/K9 for Ak47 and Fesenko, that’s an interesting trade. Definitely improves our talent. Kills our cap but we weren’t doing anything with it anyway.

He has a qualifying offer for next season

So, in fact, he’ll be a restricted FA if the Kings give him a QO.

On 6/12/09 Jazz exercised team option on Kyrylo Fesenko for 2009-10

They exercised a team option for $870K. That’s not the same as making a qualifying offer. He’s officially signed for 09/10.

I would absolutely love that trade

It rids us of Nocioni’s contract and eventually Kirelenko could be an excellent 6th man off the bench. however, he’d be yet another 3/4 tweener and I’m not sure this team needs another one at this point.

Um...
he’d be yet another 3/4 tweener and I’m not sure this team needs another one at this point.

It’s not like the Kings would be adding another tweener because AK would be replacing Noc.

I’d have to think about this, but I think I might be for a deal like this. As it was mentioned, this kills any 10/11 cap space ($17.8M vs $6.65M), but it gives the team a huge EC next year and could potentially open up a lot of cap space in 11/12, when the team would have a much better idea of how to spend it.

I think Kirilenko is much more talented the Nocioni

And Kirilenko’s talent requires more playing time.. Also I view Kirilenko as a pure 3/4 player, while Nocioni is much better suited at the 3. Kirilenko would take playing time away from Casspi and Greene, whereas Nocioni would not require as much playing time.

by submison on Jul 4, 2009 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok

If AK is “a pure 3/4 player” and Noc “is much better suited at the 3” then wouldn’t AK playing at the 4 when JT is out open up more time at the 3 for Casspi/Greene?

I don’t know who “requires” what kind of playing time, but if given the choice of a 3 who is better suited to also play the 4, that seems like it would open up more possibilities for various lineup configurations.

Again, I’m not sure I’m completely on board with this idea or not, but I don’t think that your argument has done anything to dissuade me.

Then again, I wasn’t really buying the “Boozer will take too much time away from JT/Hawes” argument either, so maybe it’s just me.

I think

it’s a ridiculous debate to begin with.

If AK is "a pure 3/4 player" and Noc "is much better suited at the 3" then wouldn’t AK playing at the 4 when JT is out open up more time at the 3 for Casspi/Greene?

IMHO, this is ridiculous. AK’s ability to spell Thompson, doesn’t free up minutes for the small forward youths; skills and abilities give you playing time in general. If Westphal sees that progression in them he can take the short term hit for long term gain. But in Noc vs AK47 discussion, there is no debate. AK gives would give the team abilities that Noc can never. And the best players will make it out on the floor, especially for a coach that will be in Westphal’s position.

Regarding the utilization of talent, Noc is much easier, as submission has stated. AK is a K9 of sorts, where his production exponentially correlates with his minutes (to be dramatic).

Yeah

you’re right. I shouldn’t make such a big generalization. I just don’t like Kirilenko’s game of late or his contract. As for this scenario (Beno + Noc), obviously Utah doesn’t take on another PG when they already have Williams, Price and Maynor. Especially with Udrih’s contract. As for Kirilenko, like submison said, he’d be a fine 6th man…but not for $17 million. I understand that his contract expires two seasons earlier than Nocioni – but if Petrie is trying to save money for next summer and not 2011, then Kirilenko, of course, doesn’t make sense.

That's why I'd be fine with Kirilenko on this team

I think Petrie has realized that his team can’t compete with the cap room other teams have, and because everyone is signing players in 2010. 2011 free agency and later will have less competition, and that’s where trading for Kirilenko really helps, as he would provide more cap room when it would make sense to add a veteran to the team.

This guy is basically sitting at the end of the Utah bench. Meanwhile, John Brockman fits Utah perfectly. Young, hard working, less expensive than Fesenko. It will be interesting to see if anything transpires after summer league.

better options than reading StR?

How is that possible?

Further, I am convinced that all of the other GMs in the league (worth their salt) read StR as well. So they all know about “the Ukraine Train (II)” Fesenko. Given the option, perhaps Utah would prefer not to trade this degree of potential (or that of Koufas) within the Western Conference.

John Bryant was not drafted for a reason. or many reasons. He is a bigger, slower, less energetic version of Boo-yah (don’t call me Nose Job) Brockman. My best bet is that Bryant is either NBDL or Europe bound, or maybe just will remain extremely Earth bound.

Do you really expect Utah to let this guy go?

I am looking at it from Utah’s point of view. Why let this guy go if Utah has the possibility of loosing Boozer, Milsap and Okur to FA in the next 2 years? It would take a lot more than a future second round pick or some bad contracts like Beno’s for me to risk my team having no 4/5s in the next couple of years.

Also, now his contract expires in 2010 when all the free agents are available. That means more flexibility to resign Boozer or Okur or get some other FAs.

We aint getting this guy from Utah without overpaying for him. PERIOD!

by Fredman on Jul 4, 2009 6:46 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Fessenko is their #3 center...

and we have all omitted the fact that he is a handful personality wise. Fesenko is not in Utah’s short term or long term plan. His contract was exercised as insurance in case Okur and Boozer opted out and Milsap left via FA.

With Booz and Memo opting in, I’m sure the Jazz wouldn’t overcharge. Especially not with the promise Koufos holds (Memo 2.0)

Who is their #2 center then?

Because Jarron Collins who was last years back up center is an unrestricted FA this summer. So Fessenko is probably moving into the back up 5 role. And maybe even the back up 4 role if Milsap leaves which is pretty much in the books because Utah is already over the salary cap with Okur and Booker staying.
