4. Kenny Thomas, Kings
The Knicks were checking up on him earlier this summer while second-guessing themselves for not acquiring him last January when they could have had his 2010 expiring contract in exchange for Nate Robinson (not D-Antoni's favorite all-time player) and Jared Jeffries, who, along with his cap-killing sidekick, Curry, combine to take up nearly 40 percent of the Knicks' 2010-11 cap.
Chris Sheridan places K9(woof!) at #4 on the list of players most likely to be traded before the trade deadline. (Insider)

I'm not against a trade like this as long as there's a pick involved
but the Knicks have no 2010 first rounder, so no thanks

What is Jeffries contract like?
If its labeled as “cap-killing”, then why would we want to trade one outrageous contract for another?
"why would we want to trade one outrageous contract for another?"
Presumably because the Knicks are contenders in the FA class of 2010 and we’re, well, probably not. At least not to the degree the Knicks are. Basically we’d be trading K9’s spot at the end of the bench (now with complimentary suit!) with and filling it with Jefferies for an extra year in exchange for Nate Robinson.
But I’m with vfettke, I’d need a pick to be down with that deal, and the Knicks don’t have one.

this trade was talked about last deadline
nate is looking for employment right so this trade is not happening.
once teams determine they will be players in the ‘10 fa market, this deadline i think k9 will fetch a package similar to the one for ron ron; young talented player, 1st rounder, and exchange bobby j’s expiring for a not so nice contract with a few years left for k9 and whatever else to make the numbers work
That would be optimal, yes
Getting 3 players out of the deal would be great, I wouldnt be surpised if the kings kept the money saved from the expiring contract thought, either – they seem to be in extreme cost reduction mode.
Let's see...
Jeffries: 6’11" PF with substandard shooting, rebounding, and shot-blocking skills
Robinson: 5’9" shot-happy ball-hog guard who doesn’t play defense
Yeah! Let’s do this trade!

The thing about K9's contract though
Is that most teams fall into one of two camps: 1) Teams that aren’t competing this year, but will be well under the cap next year because they have tons of expiring contracts, and 2) Teams that will be competing this year and are over the cap for next year. Kenny Thomas doesn’t help either of those guys. That leaves us to deal with only a handful of teams, and as mentioned previously, expiring contracts are in ready supply.
I think what the Kings can offer that very few other teams can is cap relief for this year by being able to accept a trade where we take more than we give by virtue of our being under the cap.
Jeffries and Jordan Hill and Wilson Chandler for
Thomas is an appetizing deal. No?
BOOK IT!
Except
No way NY does that deal. They’re not giving up this year’s No. 8 pick and Wilson Chandler (who is a decent, cheap, young SF with an inexpensive team option for next year) just to get $6.9M of relief next season.

The article
Sheridan actually mentions that Petrie would probably only consider the deal now if Hill or the Knicks’ 2012 1st round pick were included.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot
It's hard to imagine they'd be that desperate to get rid of Jeffries
Maybe as the trade deadline approaches, it becomes more likely. But I would think that they’d only offer Hill if Curry were involved.
And BTW, what big name 2011 free agent is going to want to go to the Knicks if there’s no one left on the team? Jus wundrin.

Who's gonna want to go to the Knicks anyway?
New York is banking that they’ll be able to get someone simply because its New York. If I were LeBron and D-Wade I’d want to go to Jersey, who will have enough money to get both those guys, still have Devin Harris and a nice young team that includes Brook Lopez and Courtney Lee.

The thinking probably goes...
If Lebron wants to be a billionaire then he’ll probably kill for all the endorsement deals that would come as a result of him playing at MSG—“the Holy Mecca of Baasketball”
I really think the Knicks should just go the route of any normal basketball team when it comes to rebuilding…but i guess they really want to just hit one out of the ballpark haha
old Knicks yes, current edition
not so dumb. Just have a bad hand and they have to play it out well enough to show their very demanding fan base that they are making progress. Desperation has its’ costs.

Whoa
what am I going to do with my K9 (woof!) jersey? Maybe I should have thought this out ….
Sugar ... water .... and, of course, purple.
Seems like
K9’s contract is only worth anything if it is combined with value (eg. a contributor at a fair price, a cheap young, or a pick). Why would we want an $8M player who can be had for no more than an expiring contract? I’d be very surprised if the K9 trade didn’t also include one of the SFs.

Kinda curious as to why the Knicks want more expiring deals?
They’ll have no good players to put next to a Lebron, Bosh, or Wade type player, making their team less attractive. They won’t have enough contracts to perform a sign and trade for one of those guys, which is the only way those guys get the max money they want. Technically they could do a sign and trade and just eat all the salary, but whats in that for any other teams involved? I could see them going after two of those 3 marquee players, but it would still be kind of hard to do.

As far as your concerna about what it's in it for the teams involved?
Seattle executed a sign & trade for Rashard Lewis tot he Magic. They got a trade exception, picked up Kurt Thomas, Phoenix’s 2008 (Which became the 24th pick and Serge Ibaka in 2008 )and 2010 1st round picks (both unprotected).
That’s what you can do with a large trade exception.
