A Very Hypothetical Situation

Hello all. As you know it is the middle of the summer, and not a lot is happening in the basketball world.  So I would like to present you with a somewhat interesting, extremely hypothetical situation.

Star-divide

Lets say that within the next week the American economy miraculously gets back up to 100%. The dollar is worth more than ever, and business is booming.  Then hell freezes over.  (Only joking, but I need the economy to be up to make this scenario work.)

Anyway, David Stern decides it is time to expand.  He announces the formation of a new NBA franchise, lets call them the Northern Iowa Rivercats. The expansion draft is in one week. You are the Kings GM, and you need to pick which eight players we will be protecting and which will be thrown to the sharks Rivercats.  Which eight players do you select?

I will give you the obvious ones:

-Kevin Martin

-Tyreke Evans

-Jason Thompson

-Spencer Hawes (unless of course you plan on getting rid of him ASAP in the event that he will soon be the NBAs most overpaid player.)

You can now choose four of the following to protect: Beno Udrih, Sergio Rodriguez, Francisco Garcia, Andres Nocioni, Omri Casspi, Donte Greene, Sean May, and of course, our man Kenny K9 (Woof!) Thomas. (An obvious selection in my opinion.)

Who do you protect and why?

Since this is totally hypothetical (and hence bullshit) I'll go for it knowing it doesn't matter

You protect Greene, Casspi, Garcia and May. (You need bigs up front.) Everyone else is very easily expendable or not likely to be taken.

Greene over Sergio?

I think that is pretty much the question. Greene may have a bit more potential, but I think Sergio is more likely to live up to his potential. And it’d be nice to keep Sergio and see him in Westphal’s uptempo system.

Hmmm

Fun question. What’s pathetic is the fact that it’s hard to come up with 8.

Definitely Garcia. After that it gets tricky. Greene and Casspi have the most upside. Noc is the most likely to produce. Sergio has a lot going for him. May fills a spot we need filled. I might go Sergio, Greene, Casspi, and Garcia, just because it makes it more likely they would take Beno if Sergio is protected. Also because May is unlikely to be taken by an expansion team.

I'm starting to think that Sergio is the NBA's version of

Weekend at Bernie’s in that we all think he’s alive but there hasn’t been any recent visible proof. If he’s alive in our hypothetical world I’d protect KTEC, Nocs, Cisco and Omri. I’m ready to kick myself for letting é go and KTEC would buy a bunch of Sean Mays.

And quite honestly

I wouldn’t have protected May either. The 4 you mentioned (along with the 3 I put up) is the only players worth protecting on this roster.

Sergio isn't a young player?

They are both young guys who haven’t gotten real chances to prove themselves. We have logjams at both of their positions. I don’t think its as obvious as you are saying.

OK

Starting with the guys that have value in excess of their contract:
Martin
Thompson
Hawes

Next, the two signed rookies (remember, Brockman is not signed yet:
Evans
Casspi

Next, cheap guys with upside:
Greene
Rodriguez

My 8th and final spot goes to Garcia, who has more value in relation to his contract than Nocioni and Udrih, and is far more valuable than May. Kenny Thomas has some value as an expiring contract, but Garcia’s talent > than KTEC.

Agreed

But I could also see Greene left unprotected in favor of Nocioni. I wouldn’t necessarily agree with it, but it would remind me of Gerald Wallace. Young, unproven talent. The development of Gerald Wallace is your worst case result.

At the same time, it is a different, developing team. When rebuilding, you keep your youth. You’re probably right (wow, it took a lot of words just to agree with you!).

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

by Exhibit G on Aug 18, 2009 7:07 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree with SB that it sucks that its hard to come up with a solid 8

Cisco (well worth his paycheck)
Casspi (don’t know why, just a gut feeling that seems to be shared by many)

Then it comes down to a guessing game about who other teams might grab of your somewhat desirable pieces. I doubt anyone takes beno, I think Noce might get taken as that Vet to guide the kids, I don’t see see KTEC in this scenario, Donte’ might possibly get taken – but I doubt it based on last season. Young teams needs PGs and having the choice between Beno and Sergio (in this scenario) I’d guess they go with Sergio. May is interesting because as Pookey mentioned you need another frontcourt player (something he was denying leading up to the draft [?]).

Hmmm
I guess I’d go for Sergio and Noce in the hope that they take Beno.

Why would losing Noce be a bad thing?

Wouldn’t that be like trading him to the Grizzlies for nothing (pre Z-Bo of course) – and wouldn’t that have made everyone pretty happy?

I think this is easy. Garcia, Greene, Casspi, Sergio. Cross your fingers and hope they don’t take May. Pray they pick up Beno and Noc.

Victory is tasty.

by iashwash on Aug 22, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

My picks exactly.

Nocioni has too Big a contract for an expansion team to take a flyer on.

Blessings.Love.Peace

by lifestyleforthesellout on Aug 18, 2009 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions

well first off - no way they would be called the Rivercats: maybe the FieldDreamers.

thus completing a Sacramento connection (with TIm Busfield).

Agree with you on the first four and will borrow Section’s reasoning and thus add Casspi to make 5.

I am not pro-Garcia but he gives known qualities and he is a keeper, but overpaid and the BYC thing is silly. Rodrguez is a keeper because he would be most likely chosen of the remaining 4 otherwise. That makes 7. I keep KTEC for the contract.

The rest of them: Andres Noce, Donté, Sean May, and of course Beno are simply, replaceable and you will have to plan to replace whomever is taken (the expanson team can only pick one and may pick none, there are 29 other teams). Whomever is the guy, their spot will be cheaply filled. Greene has shown nothing and there will probably be more interesting peices available- Northern Iowa is desperate for a championship contender right away (I have followed them on SB Nation since the beginning) and there are just so many guys you can gamble on, so a probably pass on Doratio Kane. Doubt it would be Beno, probably Noce for his history of passon. Also figure that the other teams have other such players that they had to make available and now that everyone has expsosed their show cards, you know who is a “throw away” and can get whatever you need for a reasonable price from another team.

Its not a question of 'giving up'

Its a question of whether he would get taken. I doubt he would.
As for the veiled ref to GWallace, they have entirely different games, Wallace goes to the rim and always did. Donte’ maybe very athletic, but he fails (so far) to use it very well on the court. He doesn’t go around defenders or stay in front on D.
I honestly pray that all the love for him here on STR is bourne out on the court this year – but I just don’t see the instinct in him to intuitively Use his tools to his advantage.

Donte, Casspi, Cisco, Sergio

It’s doubtful they take May, and I’d be ecstatic if they took either Beno or Nocioni

www.mancancook.net

by vfettke on Aug 18, 2009 8:29 AM PDT reply actions

I agree

I’d be tempted to keep May, because if we were to lose him we’d have almost no frontcourt depth, but I doubt a team would take him. I wouldn’t protect KTEC because it seems like of they really wanted an expiring contract, there would be much better ones to pick from (better as in more money).

But if I was choosing between Sergio and Greene here is how I look at it. If we lose Donte, we still have three guys who can play small forward, including one who is young and has a good amount of potential. If we lose Sergio, we’ve only got Beno and Evans to play the point. Evans may or may not be able to do so effectively, and Beno is, well Beno. We are in a better position to lose Greene, and athletic wing players who haven’t proven anything are a dime a dozen.

But like I said it doesn’t really matter because I would keep Sergio, Garcia, Casspi and Greene. I am only saying that I think Sergio has more value then Greene.

Yeah I am starting to think

We will do what Portland did two years ago with Lafrentz and just hold onto our expiring contract. But it would be nice to get a pick or a player for him.

And why would the Kings do that?

You can buy a draft pick for 3 million dollars. Name me an expensive expendable contract that a team will give up that the Kings would want? If they want extra (lower) 1st round picks, they might as well shell out the 3 mil in cash. Have they done that up to this point?

Hmm, this is a fun question.

Garcia for sure.

Omri and Donte as well.

Then its tricky. You have Noc, Sergio, Beno, May, Thomas. Noc is the best player of those guys. He also has the biggest contract. Sergio is going to be a free agent next year. Same with May. K-9 and Beno though, I could care less if they were given away.

I’d probably go with Noc, since he still might have value to other teams and we could use the vet leadership. His contract declines anyway. And I don’t think either Donte or Omri are ready to start and play a lot yet.

Thank You Aykis

The name of the game here is asset’s (as 214 says), and Beno, Noc, Sergio, May and Brockman are not great asset’s.

So, you don’t protect them, and if you protect one, I would think Brockman would have the most value to an expansion team so you protect him.

Let me revise that statement.

I hope he doesn’t get a big nice contract like Beno, and just give up like Beno did. Sergio could be a very good player. Much like what we though Ricky Rubio could be. He has that type of passing ability.

The only reason Beno got that contract

was A) the Kings believed Beno had more upside to be tapped B) he was the only real PG the Kings had last season, and C) he is still pretty young to boot (27).

It's not "love"

At least, not for me. It’s price. I don’t think that Greene or Nocioni have value in excess of their contract. But Greene is guaranteed less than $1 million, while Noc is guaranteed $21 million. That gives me 20 million reasons to jettison Noc instead of Greene.

And Greene is just 21 years old. There is no telling if this kid is going to go in the direction of Gerald Wallace or Quincy Douby. You know what you have in Noc – a slightly overpaid player that would probably benefit a contending team. Call it love if you want. I call it pragmatism.
