Your second favorite team
Interesting notes from various bloggers and media folk on who they watch when "their team" is not available and they need to pacify their Jones for a League game.

a lot of votes for coaches and their respective teams - a bit of style over substance
Don Nelson and the Dubs, D’Antoni and the Knicks, Larry Brown and the Bobcats. On the talent side the OKC’s, the Bulls.
Anyone here admit to having “a mistress” to your marriage to the Sacramento Kings?
I have many: hard not to want to see Tim Duncan and the Spurs, Kevin Garnett, and Dwayne Wade when the time permits. LeBron, Steve Nash, Chris Paul and Kevin Durant as well. I look for matchups (OKC vs. Portland, Boston vs. Dallas over Wizards vs. Pacers for example) on League Pass when I seek to fill my wandering eye on a night when the Kings are off.

I like to watch LeBron
CP3, OKC and Portland. I used to like Phoenix, and maybe I will watch more of them again now that Shaq is gone.
As for a 2nd favorite team? I don’t really have one anymore. I was a Laker fan before we had a team and up until the late 90s it was possible to like both teams, but I lost interest in the Lakers when Magic left and was never a fan of the Shaq/Kobe/Jackson [Redacted] teams.
Oh, for the record I cheered for the Celts over the {Redacted] in 2008.

Three other teams that I somewhat follow:
Houston Rockets- I love Morey and the way the team operates. They have over half of their cap space eaten up by injured players, but they are still always able to find players to contribute and find ways to improve their team. Landry, Brooks, Scola, Lowry, Anderson, they are like a collection of players no one had ever heard of, but Morey saw value in them so he went out and got them. Also like the Ariza signing.
New York Knicks- I like a lot of their players, always been a fan of Chandler, Lee, and Duhon. Also, I like D’Antoni and his playing style. Plus it interests me that they are so confident that they’re getting a top 2010 free agent that they are willing to do some pretty crazy things.
Dallas Mavericks- I really started following them once they got Gortat- so much for that. But I do like Cuban and the way they are willing to do whatever it takes to win now, kind of the opposite of the Knicks. Also I like Jet and Beaubois.
But if any of these teams went 0-82, I probably wouldn’t bat an eyelid.

Well
I watch a lot of Utah Jazz games when time permits; I don’t really have a reason I watch them outside of liking Deron Williams and Andrei Kirilenko. They don’t play a super appealing game to watch but when they’re at home it can be hard not to watch.
I follow the Toronto Raptors, but I don’t watch them very often. Colangelo is a great gm and I’ve almost almost always found a way to enjoy their teams. with Hedo on board maybe I might watch some of those games this season, too.
More than anything, however, I follow the NBA in general.

The Bulls
From the days of Jerry Sloan – Norm Van Lier – Bob Love – Chet Walker, to the two years that I lived in the Windy City (‘93-’94, which was the period that MJ mostly played baseball), to the good friends that I have that live in Chicago, to the fact that they are Eastern Conference so there is no conflict in interest until both the Bulls and Kings face off in the finals (hah!), to the always entertaining Blog-A-Bull site on SBN, the Chicago Bulls are my solid 2nd favorite team.

I sometimes forget that you are old enough to know who Butterbean Love is
another brother to call “antique flatus” other than myself.
Bob Love had a very interesting career and has some Kings ties: he was drafted by the Cincy Royals – was cut, then made the team later, and ended up with the Bulls after the expansion draft sent him to Milwaukee. He later made two All-Star teams during years when he averaged 25 ppg. His coach at the time, and of course you know this Section. was Dick Motta.
I have had an allegiance to the Knicks as they were the team I grew up with. The ‘69-’70 team was engaging to watch and the players had notoriety and spawned literary ties to fire the desire: Bill Bradley was the subject of “A Sense of Where You Are”, Dave DeBuschere wrote “The Open Man” which is a diary of that magical season, “Clyde” was the Walt Frazier biograph.
The Isiah Thomas tenure just wore me out with them. Directionless, pathetic and infuriating dropped them from second team status to what can best described as ex-spouse status. If I walk by Penn Station/MSG on my trips back to NYC I remember Red Holtzman and the good ol’ days. I am hopeful that Walsh/D’Antoni can bring back some reasons to care.

For me, it changes every year
but I usually have 2 or 3 teams I follow on the side. I don’t see how the Warriors are getting so many votes, the ship has kind of sailed on that squad. They lost a lot of what made them special and likable when Baron Davis left.
My side teams for the coming season:
OKC – Durant, Jeff Green, Westbrook, Harden, Sefolosha, Livingston trying to ressurect his career and like 5 big white guys with more flaws than skills. What else can you ask for?
New Jersey – Devin Harris, Courtney Lee, Brook Lopez. The Nets are a mess off the court but there will be points during the season where they young guns all click at the same time and it’s going to be BRILLIANT basketball.
Possible in-season “flings”:
Washington Wizards
Charlotte Bobcats
Chicago Bulls
I like watching OKC and Portland
Young, exciting teams. Like the Kings. Back when the Kings were good, I liked the Raptors too for some reason.

Personally
I generally wouldn’t say I have a “second team” during the regular season (though, if you put a gun to my head, I’ve always sort of had a soft spot for the Bulls since I grewup with Michael in his heyday), but once the playoffs hit I usually side-up with an Eastern Conference team, and whichever team in the West that I think has the best chance of taking-out the [redacted].

Second team
I’d go with Denver. I live in Colorado, and they’re easy to follow. I usually pay attention to what they do, attend a couple games each season, and hope they do well against everyone except Sacramento. They’re an insanely frustrating team to watch sometimes, but they can also be one of the most fun teams to watch.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot
