Eventually I’ll just learn to shut up and trust Petrie.

Would Rubio have stayed in Europe

if the Kings had drafted him?

I’d heard reports that he need the guaranteed money the 4th pick would have netted him. I also heard it would have taken 3rd pick dollars.

Either way, I’m happy with Tyreke and maybe we’ll get another chance at Rubio in 2 + years.

I've heard different reports on that

I’m honestly not sure. I think the idea was 4th-pick dollars and a negotiations on the buyout, but the negotiations became a problem.

It's a combo of pick and placement.

The T-wolves are fooling themselves if they believe that this has nothing to do with to who and where he was drafted. In the end, you can’t blame the kid for choosing a European team who could pay to get his out of Joventut. Rubio probably needs the two years anyway for his body to mature and the T-Wolves need the two years to fire the idiot who took point guards with both the 5 and 6 pick. Lets hope Minny draws the 1st pick next year and their GM goes all Matt Millen and takes Wall.

apparently that report is false.

Minnesota is still in the Race for Ricky. According to the Baseline Kahn is saying ‘no team in any league’ has reached a buyout agreement w/ Joventut.

by Ice_9ine on Aug 26, 2009 1:24 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Something I read

From our old friend Norsktroll:

Joventut board meeting on Friday. There is no done deal, but it seems to be a formality after Barcelona improved their buyout.

Not sure of his sources, but this was inevitable. European teams can help as much as they want with the buyout, unlike NBA clubs. And I will not believe any refutation by Kahn.

I do trust GP

But mostly because I trust he saw that Rubio was the talent (at least yet) that Evans is. As far as getting him here if we had picked Rubio. I don’t see that as a problem. His old team bsically cut the buyout in half. He wanted to play here. And would have made enough money as the #4 pick to do it. I don’t see him putting in the effiort he did to get us to take him and then not coming over.

That being said, Minny is looking pretty smart for taking two point guards now. The one they wanted (Rubio) and the back-up in case things didn’t work out. And the one they got they took with the lower pick, so it costs them less money.

This good be good for Rubio as well, Give him more time to grow up and polish his game.I still think he’ll be a very good PG in the NBA one day.

I couldn't disagree more
Minny is looking pretty smart for taking two point guards now

If you can honestly tell me that they are better off with Rubio in Europe than they would have been with Curry on the court, I will consider you slightly insane. Nothing wrong with being slightly insane, it can be a lot of fun, but c’mon.

Flynn, Curry, Jefferson and Love would have been a really, really nice core of young talent to build around. Kahn is an idiot.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

by Exhibit G on Aug 26, 2009 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

That's assuming that they passed on Rubio

What if they had taken Rubio and Curry? Yeah Curry and Flynn would have looked pretty good, but it also depends on what they end up getting for Rubio at some point in the future. My point was not so much that they were smart to take Rubio, but that they were smart to have Flynn in case Rubio didn’t come, which I suspect was the thinking. I’m also still not sure that Curry is going to be as amazing as predicted.

by SavageBeast on Aug 26, 2009 8:40 AM PDT up reply actions

True

It does depend on what they might eventually get for Rubio if the deal him. And on draft night, there wasn’t the expectation that Rubio wouldn’t end up in the NBA this season. If they had taken Rubio and Curry it would have made sense. What was ridiculous was taking two point guards when Minnesota needed talent at a variety of positions.

I still think they should've drafted Rubio and Curry

Then you go to Rubio, give him a tape showing Curry’s skills, give him a tape showing Jefferson’s skills, tell him you are dedicated to him as your point guard and start begging him to come over. Then you’re looking at:

Rubio- one of the best passers in the world
Curry- one of the best shooters in the world
Love- one of the best rebounders in the world
Jefferson- one of the best post players in the world

That is a great core. And worse case scenario, if Rubio doesn’t come over, you have Curry, who is more than capable of playing the point. I really think drafting Flynn was a lot of the reason Rubio didn’t come over, they did not seem dedicated to him.

My draft day theory holds true

Perennially crappy teams can always be counted on to make crappy decisions in the draft:

2009 Evidence:
Memphis – Thabeet
Minny – Drafting two one PG in 2 picks (Rubio & Flynn)
Bucks – Brandon Jennings (kidding, that franchise was bound to accidentally hit on a pick after Yi and Joe Alexander)
Bobcats – Gerald Henderson

by bignerd on Aug 26, 2009 12:09 PM PDT reply actions

I'm still going to argue

that it may not have been the “best” descision. But I wouldn’t call it crappy either. Rubio falls to you at five. Do you take him? I honestly think if not most, at least many, teams would. For many reasons, among them selling tickets and getting a lot of national and international exposure. But you aren’t sure the kid is going to come over, and honestly other than PGs there’s not much to this year’s draft that is really going to have an immediate impact on your team. So you take the best true PG available in Flynn.

If Rubio comes over, now you have two hot PG prospects. You can trade one or let them compete for the top spot. If Rubio doesn’t come over, you still have his rights and you’ve got the PG you were looking for anyway. Honestly it’s not like you gave up the heart of your team to get Washington’s pick.

Sure you can argue they should have taken Curry, but he’s still a PG, just a shoot first PG. Can he really guard twos? There are other players you could take, but are any of them sure fire either? Two years from now, if Rubio continues to play well and expand his game, he will be a hot prospect. So you came out of the draft with what could be the best PG and a future trading chip. I wouldn’t call that a bust.

I agree completely with that. Any time you get a top five pick and come away (at least for now) with nothing the fans can’t be happy. But I think I would be most pissed at Rubio.

Why take it out on Rubio?

Their GM drafted a player he wasn’t sure would come over and lost the gamble (at least for now). The pick may or may not pan out in the future, but for a franchise lacking talent it’s a gamble I wouldn’t be happy with if I were a fan of the ’Wolves.

Like I said

The two guys (Presti and Petrie) who met Rubio and spent time with him, are respected in the league for their draft decisions, both passed up on Rubio. They must have seen something. Even Memphis passed up on him.

That's the truth

Presti is the up and coming gm in the NBA and the fact he passed on Rubio as well should be enough to quiet the naysayers who question whether GP still has it or not.

I think its because I told Petrie

I wasn’t a Rubio believer.

I said I was worried he was too slow to keep up with current PGs – and too weak to overpower them.

So, its possibly my fault Rubio won’t be in the NBA right now – or maybe ever!

How smart is Presti?

IMO, the jury is still out on him. How many top 5 picks has he had the last 3 years? Answer, he has had 4. Meaning he should at least have 3 All Stars on that team and if he doesn’t . . . well than he isn’t as smart everyone makes him out to be.

Minny

If he does eventually come over, Minny gets first crack still right? They only “lose” him if he decides not to play for a year professionally correct?

by OrangeLazarus on Aug 26, 2009 3:39 PM PDT reply actions

I would have to say..

…That Geoff Petrie is a wise man. I believe he saw all of this coming. I believe he picked a better player who has 0% of the drama that Rubio now has. If all of this is true, or even part of it is true, then we have the smartest GM in the league. He is either smart or can see the future. If he can see the future, I hope he sees us wining a championship (Dick (Head) Bavetta’s bad calls notwithstanding) in the future.

I want to believe that Petrie is moving forward with his grand scheme to resuscitate the Kings franchise. Because if he saw the mess that is Rubio coming, he must be able to direct the Kings to a NBA Championship (that is if the MaLoofs remain on the sideline and don’t interfere as they have in the past…) I mean if he saw the whole Rubio mess coming, he’s freeking clairvoyant! I’m Glad he is the Kings GM.

And when they improve their record this year and “Reke” turns in a ROTY performance, I hope the Maloofs do the right thing and extend Petrie’s contract to … say… FOREVER! I think Tyreke Evans is gonna be better than Rubio ever will be if he ever comes to the states to play. I think Petrie made the best choice even though people criticized the pick endlessly. I think good things are on the horizon for the Kings Franchise. If they can turn it around and start winning or at least begin to fill the seats at Arco, then that possibly could help create excitement and perhaps assist in a new Arena deal getting done (still hoping like Kevin Johnson that the downtown concept is revived).

Sacramento is a great NBA City. The fans here are rabid and just need something to spark the revival of the cowbells. Tyreke wining ROTY would do it. Even if he is in the running, that alone might be enough to get fans back into the seats at Arco! Kings fans WANT a revival! We WANT to have HOPE again! We WANT to feel like we can make the playoffs (even though that might be a few years away realistically). I hope that Petrie has a plan for the money they have under the salary cap for 2010, and that he is allowed to use that money. I am really excited about this upcoming season!!

Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

Petrie didn't pass on Rubio because 'he saw this coming'...

he passed on Rubio because he thought Evans was a more talented player, period. By all accounts, the situation with Rubio would be much different if the Kings had selected him – he wanted to play here, he came to Sacramento to sell the Kings on him at #4, and it didn’t work out.

by cabz on Aug 27, 2009 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

The Kings seemed thrilled to land Evans. He was always the pick over Rubio.

by bignerd on Aug 27, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Will you still be trusting Geoff Petrie

If Rubio is a better player than Evans in 2 years or if Evans busts?

I mean it’s great and all to be excited with what you have versus what you could have had. But these are snap judgments to decisions that are going to take several years to play themselves out.

Would Kings fans rather have Evans immediately versus Rubio in 2 years (assuming that the buyout keeps him Europe even if the Kings drafted him) if Rubio turns out to be the better player? Or is getting Evans immediately and having instant gratification in a draft pick playing for the Kings more important than getting the best player.

These are all tough questions with no immediate answers but by no means is Rubio’s apparent decision to forego the NBA as a 19 year old for what looks like 2 years conclusive evidence that Petrie made the right pick.

by Ebomb on Aug 27, 2009 11:49 AM PDT reply actions
