Questions from a Hornets fan.
Hello Sactown. Greeting from a Hornets fan. Free agency is winding down, but alot of teams including the Hornets still have some holes. I have two questions. One, what was your opinion of Diogu? I know he played limited minutes but I would still like to know what you guys thought of him. It seems like they didnt want to give too many minutes to a guy that they were not invested in, but when he got some minutes he did well. I am not expecting an all world defesnive presence but Hilton can clean up his messes on that side. Hilt will play D and Ike will score and rebound. I am really excited about Ike because he will become the scoring foucs of our bench and we haven't had a low post backup scorer in a long time.
My second question is whether or not you think Francisco Garcia is available. The Hornets still only have one ball handler among their starters and just 2 shot creators. This usually works pretty well for us but when our wings aren't hitting their 3's they become pretty useless on offense, and it allows wing defenders to double cp3 and dwest. Also, constantly having to bring the ball up probably takes some energy out of cp3. Garcia would be perfect for us. He is a two way guy who can defend and score. He can hit the spot up three ( crucial for our offense), is an excellent dribbler for his size so he can occasionally bring the ball up, and he create his own shot when defenders over commit to defending the three.
As far as available pieces, we have...Rasual Butler. Rasual does much of the same stuff that Garcia does except he relies more on his outside shot, and he is nowhere near as good of a dribbler. He is a good defender, and he doesn't need alot of shots to be happy. He can play the two and the three, and he is a good change of pace from what Kevin and Evans can give from the backcourt. The best part about Rasual is that he is an expiring contract. We would also have to add Devin Brown to make the contracts work but you could cut him. As it is you guys already have alot of money for 2010. I don't know if getting free agents is an issue in Sacto, but if it is you can just trade his contract along with maybe Kenny Thomas for some legit firepower. I'm assuming that Nocioni still starts this year and maybe the next, so you are essentially paying Garcia 6 a year for backup duties. Also, giving him minutes prevents the Kings from seeing what they can get out of Greene. What are your thoughts?Am I being completely unrealistic?

Beno is still a better ball handler
And he can shoot mid range. Would you take him instead?

Beno's not a starter
I like Beno has a quality (some would disagree with this adjective) bench combo guard, but he isn’t starter material, and he is no where near as good on defense as Garcia. If the Hornets take on a long term contract it needs to be for a starter. Plus, we really like Collison.
Where do you see Garcia’s minutes coming from long term? He is a 6th man, but between Martin and Evans (I think they will play him at least a few minutes at the 2) his minutes will be limited. At the 3 I fugre you want to see what you have in your young guys, because this is the perfect year for that.
I don’t know if I believe that you guys will be a big player in 2010 free agency but with all of those expiring contracts there are alot quality guys to be had on the cheap. Also, if you guys are that far below the cap next year, people with be throwing first round picks at you just to take on the contracts of effective role players (and dead weight busts).
Do you really think it is all that cost effective to have that much money committed for at least 4 years to a guy who does not start when the alternative is to have more of something that everyone wants in the upcoming year? The Hornets can’t lecture any other team about giving long term contracts to role players, but still, do you think that is the best move?

Beno is Bueno
His contract maybe for another 4 years but he is getting paid bench money and he’s an almost starter. You guys should really target him!

Guys! Guys!
It’s unlikely that our friend jdpourciau here works for the Hornets front office, so your sales pitch is not going to work. Nice try though.

Shhhhhhhh Dude!
Duh, but when you got a situation like Beno you need to follow thru on every minuscule opportunity possible. I’d be happy if he just called up N.O. sports talk show and mentioned Beno’s name. You never know, 3 years later the Maloofs actually did trade for Artest.

I take it all back
My friend jdpourciau, Beno Udrih is an absolute Gold Mine. (And he has an anagram that confirms it.)

Diogu
played well the last 3 games, and supposedly Bobby Jackson said he was the best guy on the court in practice. I personally won’t miss him, but wish him luck.

Good questions JD.
As far as Diogu, I’m not sure he is an answer to the Hornets low post scoring issues off the bench but he might be able to play 10-15 minutes a game as a filler. He has some up side as a scorer/rebounder but he’s a guy who has really not been able to get it done in 4 other NBA stops. Ike poured it on for 2 or 3 games at the end of a miserable season and some people around here were pretty disappointed the Kings didn’t bring him back but I think he is a pretty big unknown. Don’t expect too much- be happy when if you get something and keep saying to yourself…he was the 9th pick in the draft, can he really be that bad?
As far as Garcia, I actually like your trade idea but I think the Kings have a similar issue that your Hornets do, actually it’s worse. Evans is not CP3 and he is really going to need a point three to help him along in his first couple of seasons. Butler has always interested me as a player and I think he could help the Kings but Garcia is just a better fit right now. Check back in a year or two and I think he might be available.

Garcia
..available. YES.
For Rasual Butler, NO.
You can have Nocioni though for Butler and change.
by Smills91 on Aug 3, 2009 10:04 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I pull the trigger for:
Beno
Garcia
Nocioni
If I’m getting an expiring contract like Butler’s in return for one of these way-too-long contracts, I’d send any of them away. I’d actually miss Garcia, but it’d be a smart play.

I agree.
Either Nocioni or Garcia need to be moved at some point (way too much long-term salary tied up in a couple of role-players) and I would be happy to see the Kings net an expiring contract in return.
Beno – not going to get my hopes up.

Garcia and Donte for
Butler and Wright/Armstrong
Because we don’t need 4 small forwards, and Garcia is definitely a back-up 2
by Ice_9ine on Aug 3, 2009 11:05 AM PDT via mobile reply actions 0 recs
Hornets would do that
Especially if it is for Hilton, although I don’t know if we’d get any value out of Greene because Scott is so tough on the younguns, especially the raw ones. Also we’d have to get two backup 5’s instead of one in FA, but I still think it would be worth.
Did Diogu play any backup 5. I’d be worried about that even with his long arms. Are you guys already done with Greene?
by jdpourciau on Aug 3, 2009 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i love donte and would keep him
And I don’t really like trading him and Garcia but I like Garcia’s contract less and Donte needs to step up quick or he’s gonna be in trouble. But I think we would regret trading him.
I would feel better about it if you took Beno and Greene and even little Sergio for Hilton Brown and Butler.

Trading Garcia
makes no sense for the Kings. I’m always amazed at how often Cisco’s name gets thrown into trade ideas…and Martin for that matter. When I think about the core of our team I see Martin, Evans, Thompson, Hawes, and Garcia. Cisco is a good defender, can play multiple positions, is an extremely tough clutch shooter who brings 100% every night. Give those 5 time together and see how it progresses. Add a little Casspi, Rodriguez, Nocioni, and a not yet named big off the bench and lets see what happens.
If after a period of time proves that we need to add pieces by subtracting, then at that point the Kings will make a move.

trade Martin? ok
How about Martin and Greene for West and Wright and a first round pick in 11

If your reply
was to me, I fail to see where I would have even hinted that Martin should be traded. The comment was to mention at how amazed I am that Garcia and Martin get used in trade scenarios. I think they are a part of our core players we should not consider trading.

West is an All-Star
Why would they throw in the 1st round pick?
Then again, why would either team make any variation of that trade?
by Charlieb on Aug 3, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wouldn't work
Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t that Martin is not of comparable value to D. West, but that move just wouldnt work for us. West works perfectly with Chris Paul’s game, and the effectiveness of their pick and roll negates the need for an all star level wing in order to compete. We just need balanced guys who can shoot the three and occasionally drive to the basket. He is one of the best jump shooting bigs in the game, he and CP3 have a comfort with each other, and he is a high character guy. Without him we have no pick and roll which is where CP is at his most effective.
Also, while Martin’s contract is very reasonable it is harder to find a player of his caliber at his contract then it is to find a big who can score at West’s contract.

um...okay
The only guys we are looking to move are Peja, MoPete and Hilton. The problem is that you often have to give to get as you probably very well know.
Nocioni is getting older, and he is no longer as respected for his spunky defense. His contract is also kinda large from year to year.
Beno was a dissapointment last year, and no one wants to bail out the kings for that contract. Also it is tough to see Beno ever earing the minutes to justify that deal, especially if Garcia is still there to sop up extra backup minutes at the 2 when he isnt backing up Evans.

Except that the Hornets are not that stupid.
And it doesn’t work on the trade machine. Throw in Rasual Butler to make the salaries work. But the Hornets still aren’t that stupid.

Ike Diogu
Will probably be stuck in Byron Scott’s doghouse. Scott has always kept young, talented and not as mature players (at least then) like Brandon Bass, JR Smith, Julian Wright in his doghouse.
I don’t see how Diogu doesn’t escape the dog house because Ike’s love for the game of basketball and his desire to get into shape has been in question and Scott is known to have very limited patience with young players.
