Paul Westphal Talks Tyreke Evans, Sean May and More
The Rise Guys had Paul Westphal on this morning for about 15 minutes. You should be able to hear the interview at KHTK.com later today, but until then some notes from his interview.
- Tyreke Evans's best quality is that he asserts his will on the court.
- Jon Brockman is smart, and knows where he's supposed to be.
- Omri Casspi can be a versatile player, especially considering his size.
- Positions don't matter as much as they used to; if Sean May can do good things as a center, then he'll play there.
- Donte Greene is not an "inside" player right now.
- Westphal is not wed to an up-tempo system -- you have to adapt to the roster you have, be pragmatic. At the same time, he wants players who can run and defend.
- Defense must be stressed and reinforced constantly, but the staff also needs to set realistic goals for players.
The preseason begins two months from today. Can't wait.

2 Months?
Holy hell that seems like a long time from now.
I like that these notes from Westphal give some insight, but they aren’t a sudden shift from what’s been observed. A lot of this seems to show an understanding of where the team is at. It’s not like anyone would disagree that Donté isn’t an inside presence right now, at least based on Summer League.
I’m also really encouraged to hear that the style will be based on the players, rather than trying to force rounds pegs into square holes. And I always love when a coach commits to defense.

Like Musselman?
I kid. I kid. Musselman was commited to defense. Although in his case it was a defense attorney

Its Westphal's job
in this situation to tell you what you want to hear, looks like he succeeded.
Of course he’s going to be committed to defense, if you ask Mike D’Antoni he’ll tell you he’s comitted to defense. And naturally he’s going to tell you his system will be based on the players abilities. Do you really think he’s going to answer an interview question by saying, our system is what it is, and regardless of what players are good at, we’re throwing the ball to Dé3 thirty times a night to post up?
Hopefully Westphal actually has a workable system (that was Petrie’s job to determine), if he does, the question will be how good he is at making it work for our guys, and how good he is at getting them to buy it and do what they are supposed to.
Westphal said everything straight out of the book the way he was supposed to say it, at least with regard to defense and his system. The individual player comments were interesting for what they say and don’t say.

Fair enough
But on the same train of thought, we shouldn’t automatically dismiss everything he says, either.
There are two ways to slide easily through life; to believe everything or to doubt everything. Both ways save us from thinking.

I think 4-3 was just noticing an experienced coach who knows how to connect and politic with the fanbase
I see no condemnation in his tone. (rec’d for pointing out the obvious about pointing out the obvious)
I think it ultimately fascinating that the Kings are committed to Hoss Brockman in public ink but not contractual ink at this later date in the summer (it is August and yes two months until season, but so many signings have occurred already)

Yes with a 17 win team
Don’t tell me about, show it to me on the court.
BOOK IT!
I hate to beat a dead horse, but...
Positions don’t matter as much as they used to
sounds like more support for my theory that Petrie and Westphal have both moved beyond the concept of “size for the sake of size” (at least in terms of the frontcourt) and are trying to think outside the box in terms of how to get your 5 guys to score more points than their 5 guys without falling into the traditional concepts of positions and roles. In other words, don’t be shocked if the Kings don’t add another 6’10’’ F/C to this roster, unless it’s a 10-day contract situation if there’s an injury.
I think it’s progressive thinking by a couple of pretty smart dudes, and I like it.

And look who we have as our point guard as well
Someone who’s 6-5 with a 6-11 reach and who’s not a “point guard”

Positions don't matter as much - that may be true to a point
But you still need 3 things (at least) to go well: Rebounding, interior defense – and an offensive game strategy that results in reasonably high percentage shots most of the time.
Rebounding and defense do depend to a great extend on physical matchups. Thats just the way it is.

My favorite moment of Summer League
And a good example of Tyreke imposing his will was during a close game (I forget which game, maybe only one was close) everybody who was watching saw Tyreke isolate and knew he was going to attack the rim-he had been doing it thruout the summer league-and Tyreke got right to the rim and scored.
Sure, it was summer league, but it was pretty illustrative, IMO. So he can impose his will on the game; now let’s just hope his will develops alongside his game.
You don't say?
Positions don’t matter as much as they used to
I have been trying to convince my wife of this for years.

That's what she said......
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
I think that's what he was implying.
BOOM! That’s what you get for calling me a dumb@$$. Feel the shame pookey, feel it.
Victory is tasty.
I feel shame already
Does that count?

And the position that she prefers ...
… is the one that’s as far away as possible?
I hope...
Donte shows some signs of becoming an adequate inside player this season.
October 28th couldn't come soon enough.
I'd settle for adequate player period!
Sean May is not fat. It's widescreen distortion.

lets just hope
donte realizes he won’t or shouldn’t get on the court unless he plays stellar defense & rebounds i’ll be happy with that at this point

I AM PUMPED ABOUT THIS YEAR!!!
I got to watch Tyreke in summer league… THE GUY IS AN ANIMAL!
The drafted players and Westphal are gonna kick everybody in the @ss this year. No blow outs like last year. We will be be tough; we will compete; and we will be the most exciting team to watch in the NBA once again!!!
No blowouts?
This is the NBA. Every team every year gets blown out multiple times.
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
What?
We will be the most exciting team to watch? As in, “The suspense is killing me. Will we have our sixth win by Christmas?” kind of excitement? Because I’m pretty sure we’re not going to kick anybody around this year.
You might want to switch to decaf or something. You seem to be too easily excited.
