30Q: Will ARCO Arena Attendance Get Even Worse?
30Q asks the important questions about the Kings all through September.
It probably happened in 2007-08, when real home-court advantage in Sacramento became a thing of the past. The fact is that when a team is not good, a fan base shrinks -- the casual fan goes away. As casual fans actually soaked up quite a few tickets during the Glory Era (and the associated price hike), them leaving gives us a pretty gaping hole. The prices have been slower to get in line with demand -- frankly, they probably couldn't get cheap enough to fill up the gym right now. There are myriad structural issues that prevent bad teams from filling up gyms right now.
But plenty of teams still draw crowds, and not all of those are very good. So we're left to see how many folks who could still handle season tickets last year kept them after a 17-win campaign. This is something the franchise knows, but we don't. In place of that, an informal poll.

out of the area, but if I’ll come to visit my sister in Davis I’ll sure attend as much games as possible

because if this is the last season to get the NBA locally I want to remember it, enjoy it, and treasure the 24 (?) years we had it.

Same as last year
I have had an 11 game pkg for the last couple of years. I bought it again this year, however I dropped from $40.00 seats to $25.00 seats. Partly because of the economy and partly because a little voice in the back of my head says ownership hasn’t made any “great” moves to try to get better. Hopefully the product is at least marginally better.

Same as usual
I can give you no logical explanation as to why I am still a season ticket holder, but I am. I’ll wind up with about 24 games this year, and I’ll try to sell about 10 of those games off. So I guess that means 12-15 editions of “The View From Section214.”

When I was Flush
… I would grab about one game a month … been everywhere in the arena from 2 rows behind Peaches, to the suites and up in the $10 seats ducking the spotlight.
But alas, unemployed for the last 9 months – looking at whole new career field that will keep me out of town for 2 months at a time … so games are not in the cards.
The last game I went to was 07/08 against Toronto. Oddly enough and why this was a reply, I was in Section 214.

We live out of the area, but try to catch a least a couple of games when we are in town. I really enjoyed the LV game we attended and definitely plan on seeing more games both in Sac and Utah.

Out of the Area
I usually try to catch the Kings when they come to Denver, but that doesn’t help Arco. If I happen to be in Sacramento at the same time as the Kings, I’d consider trying to catch a game this season.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot
Well...
Considering we just bought our first set of season tickets ever we will be there more this year. We managed to get seats one row behind seats that are twice as much, so at least that makes me feel good. Seats in rows that were once locked down by die hard season ticket holders are coming up for sale. I know that has a lot to do with the product on the floor but whatever, I live 3 minutes from the Arena and watched all the games on TV so I might as well go…
I've only been to one Kings game (I know, I'm a bad fan)

More for me
Got an 11-game plan for the first time and I’ll probably try to catch a couple more games outside of the plan.
By the way, anyone know if pre season tickets are cheaper than regular season. It should be obvious but I just want to make sure. Trying to catch Speed dunk on Oden again
The future begins now...
Same price as the regular season
At least they are when purchased as part of season tickets.

Doesn’t really make sense to me that they would charge the same for regular season and pre-season. Ohh well… $10 tickets it is

Tyreke Evans. This guy is going to be so much fun to watch.
Also seeing Thompson, Hawes, Greené and Martin improve will be fun. Omri could be a surprise at some point too though I’m not counting on that.
Kings rule! (They are royalty - right?)
Same ol' same ol'
I live in Houston so I get the opportunity to see 2 live Kings games per year. You can always tell I’m there as I have moved the Arco spirit eastward and yell all game till I’m hoarse. Couple that with lethargic Rockets fans and $7 beers and occaisonally I’m the only voice you’ll hear besides the announcers. Luckily the Rockets will be so bad this year the Kings mat even have a shot at winning. If you think the Kings have it rough think of the Rockets. I wouldn’t trade my team for their team straight-up, even with a healthy Yao.

The post title and the poll ask two different questions
What will I do versus what will overall attendance look like?
My sporadic attendance habits will probably remain the same. Overall attendance is hard to guess because it is partly a prediction about what the economy will do. Assuming the economy is about the same as last season (something I don’t necessarily predict), I would expect a slight improvement in attendance based upon a younger, more exciting team that I hope and believe will also be more competitive, especially if key players stay healthy.
Did I include enough caveats?

Picked More
Moved back to Chico from Seattle. In fact with my Birthday coming up I’m told I’m getting tickets to the first regular season opener and a jersey. This will be my first time rooting for them at home!!!! Can’t wait!
"I grok it!" Michael Valentine Smith
Chicoan, myself.
I went to two games last year and two the year before. I’ll attend more this year (3?!), as I assume the prices will be similar to last year’s, and I like this year’s team more.
I find watching the games on TV nearly as good as watching live with bad seats—but I was able to sneak down and take the absentee rich people’s seats after half the last few games I’ve attended, which made it very cool.
Ticket prices went down quite a bit

That little taste of victory in the late 90's early 2000's caused
some fans to turn their back when things went down hill.
I say this because when I worked for the Kings from 89-96 they were still pretty bad, but they sold out every night. Partly the economy is to blame, but I think once a fan base gets a taste of success people are harder to impress.

if Westphal and staff can teach, motivate, and coordinate
And turn this team in a positive direction instead of the downward spiral of the last 3 or 4 years, then people will come to Arco.
There is a lot riding on the success of the players and even more on the coach. But Sacramento loves a fun game, even if the Kings don’t win.
That is what is different about the last couple years compared to the team with Mitch Richmond. Mitch couldn’t play D, but he competed. He didn’t have help, but he had heart.
This is a young team, and we need to see them have fun for once.

Well I doubt this counts,
but I’ll probably go to my first Kings game ever this year when the Kings play the Wizards in DC. I wish I could make my money go to the kings though.

live locally but dont attend king's games.
that option just makes a guy who now lives in the midwest very sad.
I concur with you sir
Seeing the games live is just a whole different experience. Growing up I was never able to afford playoff tickets to those big games, and those were still some of the best memories I have, just watching them on the television. Seeing them live would have been something else.

Bobby Jackson
how come the Kings havn’t resigned b-jax? I know, i know, he is older with diminished skills, but he is a leader and the crowd friggin loves him. He is a more than valuable asset in the locker room for the youngsters we have on that team now.
we got enough coaches
And Kevin needs to be the leader. No Bobby necessary.

I love Bobby Jackson
(Begin threadjack participation)
But he was on this team all last year and we saw only 17 wins. B-Jax was not the cause, nor is he the cure.
With Evans, Martin, Rodriguez, Udrih and Garcia on the roster, there are no minutes for the aging Jackson on the floor, and I can’t see the Maloof’s giving him an NBA veteran minimum contract to “coach” while wearing short pants.
Additionally, Jackson was pretty vocal about his displeasure over the way last season went. And while I admire him for that, I’m not sure that he is hardwired to play another season for a bottom five team.
Bobby needs to find a contender that could utilize him in shor bursts off the bench, or he needs to retire. Whatever he does, I wish him the best. One of the all time great Kings.

Kevin
is no leader. I love the kid, but he is no leader. Not yet. That’s why he, and the rest of the team need veteran leadership in the locker room that coaches can’t provide. Kevin martin has 5 play off games under his belt, and 2 injury riddled seasons in his most recent past. A great scorer? Absolutely, and I love the kid for that.. but he is not a leader yet. The only other 2 vets on the team that could offer up any leadership outside of b-jax is Nocioni.. who doesnt want to be here all that bad anyway, and K-9.. We went through this before when Bibby thumped his chest, and declared this his team, and we saw how well that worked out.
not sure what this has to do with attendance
But I don’t think Kevin has had the opportunity to be a “leader.” I do think he works hard and in practice and in the game, and I do think he will continue to be our leading scorer. He could use some help focusing defensively, but with a healthy ankle I am sure he will improve.
So my question is, how is he not a leader? He may not be a jerk and feel the need to glare or tell at teammates during a game (Kobe) but that doesn’t make him any less the player who we want the rest to emulate.
Imagine if all the Kings worked as hard on their game as Kevin. At least at offense.
by Ice_9ine on Sep 12, 2009 2:30 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
being
a great leader, and being a great scorer are two different things. Kevin lacks what Kobe, KG, M.J., C-Webb, and Lebrong all have, a vocal presence. Plain and simple. He is a great scorer. His defense may come around eventually. Hell, for all we know, he could have an awesome all around game in 2 or 3 seasons, but until he has a vocal presence about him, then a flashy and quick scorer with a grand total of 5 play off games under his belt, is all he will ever be. Jackson had a vocal presence that was listened too. He lead by example AND by way of words. Martin, at this point, and certainly not in the extremely near future, has that quality yet.
I live out of the area
but, I usually catch a game when i’m in town. The kings should draw a better crowd this year for three reasons. Last year, the team was bad. Not just a little bad, but very bad. We all say that they could have won a few more of the close games, but they were bad enough that they could have lost a few more too. I think the margin of victory and seeming lack of effort is what turned the crowds off last seasn. That and the painfully out of sync offense.
So, the three reasons I think the attendance will be up this year are:
1. We actually have a potential star on our roster now. I think a lot of fans will show up just to see Evans play.
2. We have a veteran coach who will play an uptempo game and have an offensive game plan.
3. I believe Westphal will not put up with lack of effort
