And then apparently ask

Does this mean a Noc deal is near?

My thoughts exactly...

either Noc or another small forward is headed out the door sooner than later…

Yeah that's the only reason

why I would think the Kings would sign him. I mean it’s not six SF/SGs on the team. Or maybe we do.

september boredom...

Celts? read that Rondo and Ainge are feuding again with Rondo implying he won’t sign a new contract with Celts.

He was an exciting player

And I say was. I don’t know how much he has left in him. But if it’s anything even close to his Sonics day, at least the kings will have somebody who can dunk with flash, that is when he finds the minutes to play.

Don't hate, I'm a realist!

Was just thinking the same thing

Back in the day he was a spectacular athlete. Be interesting to see what he has left in his tank.

by Kusian on Sep 17, 2009 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

we had that in Dahntay Jones

and that didn’t pan out, I don’t see how this is supposed to.

Victory is tasty.

Read this a couple weeks ago from basketball reference:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/blog/?p=3220

Does not sound good. I don’t mind having another Solid pro kind of guy on the team. But if he is going to steal minutes from Greene and Casspi I do not know how I feel about it. Also, I wonder if Coach Westphal prefers vets to rookies/young guys?

Doubtful

Westphal knows he has a rebuild ahead of him that requires developing youngsters

Yea but Mason was drafted by the Sonics

When Westphal was coach… so Petrie has wanted him (based off of rumors we read) and he is (possibly) a Westphal guy.

The flip-side of this is that he does DRIVE. And could possibly help the younger guys (Greene I’m looking at you) get a grasp of penetration vs. jacking up 3pt shots.

I would have liked to see another Center but this is not AWFUL.

Tough review

I had no idea he’d fallen off so badly.

by Kusian on Sep 17, 2009 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions

That's the thing

Coaches will always tend toward playing veterans because coaches always want to win, knowing that they’ll be blamed for their W/L record regardless of their roster. The FO should not be voluntarily giving Westphal that option. They should be forcing him to play young players by only giving him young players. This is so stupid.

by nbrans on Sep 17, 2009 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Ridiculous

The Kings need a backup center. And they sign a redundant, washed up, 31 year old swing man who is going to compete for minutes with the players the Kings need to be developing if the team has any hope of being good again.

The league will be paying most of his salary if it’s a deal for the minimum, but this is still a really troubling sign that the Kings’ FO’s grasp of reality has been permanently broken.

For some strange reason Petrie’s wanted Mason for years and he’s always been linked in trade rumors, but this is completely ridiculous.

off topic

This is totally off topic, but I saw all the young bigs out last night (May, Shock, Hawes). Spencer and Jason look great -leaner and stronger. (And really, really young.) However, I was shocked by May: He is lean. Looks like an athlete rather than a really tall, fat kid. Foks are going to be impressed when they see him.

Ditto the ???

I remember Petrie tried to trade for Mason before, but the other team (Bucks? Hornets?) didn’t want to take K9 in return. I would have liked such a deal at the time.

Now, however, I’m puzzled. Why sign him now? Is there really a deal that may go down with a Noce or Garcia now that wouldn’t have gone down earlier this summer? And is signing Desmond freaking Mason really that important to do before making such a deal.

Anyone else remember Rodney Buford? This sounds like another case of signing just to sign someone. Hope I’m wrong.

This is quite possibly the last signing I expected

I like Mason, but what the Natt? I guess we’ll be having him as K-Mart’s backup and the team is going to go full steam ahead on Reke at the point only.

With this signing, I think this puts Noc as JTs backup and bumps up Cisco to starter. So my projected depth chart is:

PG: Evans/Beno/Sergio
SG: Martin/Mason
SF: Cisco/Greene/Casspi
PF: JT/Noc/Brockman/K-9
C: Spencer/May

You bring up something I would like to expound on.
I guess we’ll be having him as K-Mart’s backup and the team is going to go full steam ahead on Reke at the point only.

According to many posters here at StR and pundants around the hoops world the Kings will be faced with a dilemma as to what to do with Kevin Martin when Evans proves that he is not a point but a shooting guard. This move may be a way to squash those ideas by forcing Evans to play exclusively at the point, forcing him to adapt to the position. If the Kings use Evans as a two and he excels, the team now allows the seed of doubt to enter as to Evans natural position. If they block Evans by using Martin, Garcia and Mason exclusively, Evans and Martin will be forced to co-exist as back court mates or die trying.

I like Mason as a player- he is a raw athlete, similar to Gerald Green. I guess my questions arise from this comparison- why Mason, a nearly 32 year old player with injury issues and not Gerald Green, a 23 year old with similar talent and less injury history. This leads me to conclude that the Kings want Mason’s leadership and that Noccioni is very likely on his way out of town.

This signing makes more sense to me if a Nocioni trade is brewing.

First reactions

Desmond Mason?? Really??

Noc is getting traded

We do need more pieces to pair up with K-9 to get something good in return.

He’s another expiring who can mentor the kids.

I’m going to reserve judgement on this one for now until I hear from GP or Westphal

The future begins now...

Makes sense

On a team of brick layers, what’s one more mason?
