[Webber's] raw point and rebound numbers looked good, but anything more than a superficial look at his advanced numbers revealed a player who was shooting too much for his team's own good, and those numbers hardly did justice to a player who was by then one of the worst team and individual defenders in the league.

I think Webber's injury needs to be above Gilbert's
It probably cost the Kings the championship, and also indirectly led to this slump we’re in now.
Grant Hill though is a tragedy. He’d probably be a Hall of Fame player without that injury, and the Magic might have won a title with him and Tmac at full capacity.

Probably?
Definitely.
Indirectly? No, it was the first domino to fall. It caused everything that happened after.

Thank you Kelly Dwyer
Pretty much hits the nail on the head with the above quote.
So can we collectively stop ruminating about “if only we hadn’t traded Webber” now? This has been getting really tiresome.

Anybody wistfully thinking back on post-2003 Chris Webber is a moron
The man was a shell of his former self after that knee injury. He needed to be traded. You can at least kind of make an argument that we shouldn’t have made the Peja/Ron trade, but the Webber trade was needed and it gave us another couple years or Corliss. So really it was like an added bonus.

Peja/Ron trade
I still defend that trade. If Peja wasn’t traded, the Kings would’ve had to drastically overpay him to stay, or let him walk away for nothing in return.
By trading him to Indiana, the Kings got Artest. He delayed the rebuilding efforts, caused some headaches, etc. But he eventually got us Donté and the draft pick that became Casspi. I’m ok with that.

I totally agree
My point was just that the Webber trade was more defensible than the Peja trade.
Worst case scenario if we don’t trade Peja? He comes off the books and we never learn of Ron’s love for Celine Dion.
Worst case scenario if we don’t trade C-Webb? He continues to rapidly deteriorate and we’re on the hook for 20 mil a year until, well, right around now.

Actuallly...
by now he’d have medically retired. Or we’d have a $20 million trade chip

We would have had that trade chip two seasons ago
Or significant salary cap space last summer. Instead, we’re finally getting out from under KT’s deal, as well as SAR and Mikki—both of whom wouldn’t have been signed, even if Webber was as unproductive as some say (unproductive enough, I’ll repeat, to win the Player of the Month award right before he was traded).
I would still do the Peja/Ron trade, in fact, I would have traded Peja sooner. Right after his “MVP” year, when he failed again to do anything in the playoffs.
Coulda, woulda, shoulda, I know. But I reject the revisionism I’m seeing around here lately.

Webber never came close to winning that award again
He was a complete stiff for two years on the Sixers who (as I’ve stated ad nauseum) paid him ~$30M to get the hell out.
I agree about the wisdom of trading Peja earlier though. Same with Bibby and Miller. Artest did keep the Kings competitive for one more season, but ultimately he just contributed to delaying the overdue demolition.

Kenny Thomas, Brian Skinner
Were stiffs here. The Kings didn’t save any money with the trade, got no talent in return and it ended up being the catalyst that brought this team to the bottom. I don’t see how anybody can see Kenny Thomas, FIVE YEARS LATER, producing nothing, and defend the trade.
Everything Dwyer said is true, and it was still a horrible trade.

I think that arguing the Webber exodus trade
is like arguing the Ralph Sampson-Jim Petersen trade. Many forget that Petersen was done shortly after the trade, and the overall net impact to the Kings was about $600,000 a year for two years.
The Webber exoduse trade is really a non-deal. The idea was good – break the $20 million a year contract into three smaller and easier to manage/trade contracts. If not for the Kenny Thomas factor, it might have worked. But it didn’t, and the Kings have to ride out an extra year of K9(woof!). On the other hand, they did free up some money over the past few years by dealing Webber, which has come in handy when it was time to extend Martin (yea!) and sign Mikki Moore (boo!).
Webber’s injury had a castrophic effect on this franchise. The trade was just a bi-product of that catastrophe.

I'm pretty sure that when you factor in luxury tax implications
The Kings came out well ahead on the Webber deal. Yes Thomas’ contract lasted two years longer, but the deal may have saved the franchise from bankruptcy.
