Kevin Martin and "Gamble Steals"

On the eve of Martin's return to action, I wanted to address an issue that has caused me considerable angst and grief over the past few seasons - KMart's defense and, more particularly, his penchant for gambling on steals.

Part of my inspiration for this post comes from this discussion in True Hoop (11th bullet down), which in turn links to Hardwood Paroxysm here.  The topic is basically about how both O.J. Mayo and Chris Paul excel at the "non-gamble steal".

The non-gamble steal, as you could probably guess, simply means staying in front of your man while swiping/pawing/poking at the ball to force the turnover.  It occurred to me that this is what KMart needs to focus on.   Unfortunately, Kevin seems to be a big fan of the "gamble steal"; i.e., leaving your man and cutting into passing lanes in an attempt to intercept and get an easy breakaway lay-up.  In just the four or five games he played to start the season, I witnessed him make several unsuccessful gamble steal attempts.  The typical consequence of KMart's failed bids for glory is a 5 on 4 offensive possession for the opponent, which can usually swing the ball and capitalize on our subpar help defense to get the bucket and/or foul.

Another version of KMart's free-wheelin' style of defense occurs when he is rotating on defense as the offense swings the ball around the horn, so to speak.  If he gets to his new cover and his man has already passed the ball on to the baseline corner, for instance, Kev will simply give up on the play, run past his man and try for a cherry pick opportunity on the other end.   I have a distinct recollection of this egregious conduct from a game earlier this season - I wish I could cite the precise instance but, trust me, it happened.  And it's happened more than once.  The result, of course, is the same: 5 on 4 offensive possession for the other team; the guy that Martin was supposed to be guarding cuts to the basket and gets the open feed.  No cherry pick points for Speed.

So, more often than not, KMart's gamble steal attempts are unsuccessful.  That doesn't necessarily mean, however, that he has to have a 100% success rate for the practice to have utility.  But what kind of success rate would be necessary to legitimize the risk?  As low as 20%, considering it'd be an easy bucket if he makes the steal?   As high as 50%, considering he puts the Kings' defense at a disadvantage every time he bails?  I'm leaning towards the latter.  Sadly, though, there's no way he's close to that kind of a success rate.

In any event, it's a hugely frustrating thing for me to watch, being the risk averse dude that I am.  The King's help defense is nowhere near good enough to support KMart's gamble steal attempts.  I hope that PW does not encourage it.  (Maybe it's coming from Thorpe?  Who knows.)

It's definitely something I'll be keeping my eye on as Kevin makes his return...

Good point

But I have faith in PW and our coaching staff giving him an earful if he does stuff like this and jeopardizes our defense. I whole heartedly agree with you about my excitement to see his defensive intensity and focus now that he doesn’t have to carry the team on the other end.

Screw you Knicks! LBJ to the Kings!!!

Assumptions

You are assuming that KMart was doing this of his own accord. You are assuming that it wasn’t in fact the coach telling him to do it.

If I remember right it wasn’t just Martin making these moves. Others were focusing on trying to steal the ball and that has kind of phased out now.

It was probably the coaching staff, and not the players, wanting them to do it so that they are always looking for steal opportunities.

Small sample, admittedly

But I thought his defense was ramped up considerably during the first five games. I thought he was pestering his man really well, and staying in front. I still have no doubts that he could be a fantastic defender with his quickness and length.

Seriously, he has played 5 games this season, and you wanna bust on him already?

Good Post

A player has to rely on their court instincts, and in the case of K-Mart, his lightening quickness, to pick out the best steal opportunities, enter passing lanes, and attack vulnerable ball handlers. If he comes up empty handed, it is often too late to get back into the play. It is up to the coaching staff to temper this play if it becomes habitual. Mario Ellie, in particular, will get in a players ear if they get lazy with defensive principles.

He's not the only one

‘Reke and Beno and Sergio have all been burned by missing steals and leaving their player open. My guess is that it’s a coaching thing. I’m not too worried though.

a 50/50 success rate is great

If you’re talking about passing lane gambles. You win, its a layup 99.9% of the time, you lose…they still probably only score at a rate of 75% tops.
Passing lane gambles, should be based on time and score,
I also don’t think players attempt it unless they are fairly confident in the results,
I say, sit back, and watch how he blends on D for 10 games

I remember having discussed this very early on in the season

Wasn’t there some verification that the coaching staff was asking this group to go for the “gamble steal”?

I believe TZ had a post on the front page

about this exact thing at the beginning of the season. That seemed to be the strategy of the coaching staff at first. I believe Miami and Milwaukee (?) were using the same strategy and yielding fairly positive results.

The future begins now...

Article here.Martin is in the photo that TZ included in the post, so I guess that it is his fault.

Martin can't get "non-gamble" steals

because his arms are too short, and he isn’t strong enough. I actually like him using his best asset, his speed, in that regard, as long as he uses that same speed to get back on D. He is averaging 2.0 steals a game so far, and thats among league leaders, so he can’t be doing that bad. Add the fact that he was getting about 5 boards a game means he is trying at least most of the time to get the defensive boards

also

You have to be blown away by his Turnover rate. I mean, for the amount of possesions that he uses, to be averaging 1.4 a game, is sureal.

Last year turnovers were a problem for him

But that’s cause he had the ball in his hands pretty much all the time. Now he doesn’t have to worry about that with Tyreke.

Just been waiting around for 30 odd games to post this shit?

How about you let him play a couple of games before you attack him.

Not at all.

Like I said in the opening paragraph, this is something I’ve seen him do frequently over the last two or three seasons. And, apparently, Ziller found this to be enough of an issue to raise it in a post two or three months ago. So, I’m not the only one with this on my radar. (And don’t get me started on his tendency to stay planted and reach instead of moving his feet and staying in front of his man…)

But this is certainly not a “trade Martin!” or “Martin sucks!” proclamation. It’s…constructive critiscism. Tough love. I desperately want KMart to become a reliable defender. I would love to see the Evans-Martin backcourt thrive. But I’m not blind to his flaws. I’m hoping he proves me wrong.
