Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

The Kings are suddenly better than anyone expected. However, they would still love to cut long-term payroll. They've been using Thomas' $8.8 million expiring contract as bait. In other words, you can have it if you take Andres Nocioni, too.

I'll give Nocioni this

I’d rather have him than Eddy Curry or Jared Jeffries, players the Knicks are trying to package away with their expirings.

Honestly, Noc's contract is not that bad

It’s got a few years, but that declining price tag is nice. Plus, the last year is a team option, I believe. I still see him going to the Celts for expirings. They could use him quite a bit

www.mancancook.net

by vfettke on Jan 14, 2010 11:06 AM PST reply actions

I agree

A lot of teams will start to freak out as the deadline approaches. This offseason is going to be insane in terms of signings, trades, and all that so I can see a lot of teams (Boston for example) looking at this year as their last serious chance of winning it all. They may just go for it.

I didn't really think of the Garnett injuries in regards to Boston.

It makes a lot of sense that they would target Noc because he can play the 4 as well as the 3. I always just looked at Noc as a replacement for James Posey who left last year for NO. Boston has a stack of small movable EC pieces. I think that to a team like Boston, Noc is worth expiring contracts and their 1st rounder (25-30 pick). I also believe that the Kings can use Boston and their expirings/pick to obtain a big piece to the puzzle when added to Kenny, the Kings 1st and/or a Hawes or Greene. Expiring contracts, 2 picks and a young player = gold to a team about to lose…say…Chris Bosh.

His contract is that bad

If GP can get rid of Noc for expirings we should be ecstatic.

There can’t be that large a market for slow-footed gunners that can’t shoot. The only hope is finding a contender that saw Noc’s reaction for half a season last year when he came here and played hard and that team prsuming the same would happen this year.

Other than a half season for us last year, Noc has been terrible for years. That his contract declines to $6mil/per is nice, but its still a lot of money for a guy that might bring what you expect to a playoff team.

The way I have felt all year is

if we do not find any takers during the season… move Noc to the bench and let him be a primary back up to the 4 and spot minutes to the 3.

He is a valuable piece in that he does bring intensity to the court. Plays decent D. Can create a shot of the dribble if need be and can hit the long ball.
The way I see it the only front-court players we have that I would want playing ahead of Noc would be Thompson/Hawes/Brockman. Let Noc get the rest of the minutes while pairing him with the better rebounder. Basically no Hawes/Noc lineup ever.

If we either don’t find an expiring that is bigger for this season by dumping Noc/K9 or a talent upgrade (AK47?). Then we do what Portland did last season and hold onto our expiring’s and either chase a free-agent this year… or save our space and wait till next season.

Which is why

As much as I would like to see a Kings/Utah trade happen with AK47 and K9/Noc as the primary pieces. I do not know if it will. Because it slightly increases our payroll for this season and next (even though AK47 comes off the books at the end of next season).

They are still rebuilding. We are just better than what everyone (well the pundits/talking heads) thought we would be. Which means we can look for more than just a straight salary dump (like the Armstrong acquisition although that was not really a talent upgrade either more of a guy who can block a shot here and there).

by PhutureKings on Jan 14, 2010 1:00 PM PST up reply actions

Are you sure?

Because Thabeet is currently leading the NBA in blocked shots per 48 minutes. And he is a respectable 25th in rebounds per 48, ahead of M. Gasol, Varejao, Lopez, Bynum, Kaman, Stoudemire, JT, and many other big-name rebounders. Admittedly he plays limited minutes, but so far he is performing exactly as advertised. A potential game-changer on the defensive end who is very raw on the offensive end.

My point is not that he is a star. My point is that it is WAY too early to tell, but preliminary indications are extremely positive.

Did you just compare Sergio to Calderon?

Other than the fact that they are both Spanish and play little D, they have nothing in common. Calderon is one of the most efficient players in the league and he can shoot so he is still effective off the ball. I’m not saying to do the trade, but Calderon is a near all star (when healthy) and Sergio is still trying to prove he deserves a roster spot in the league.

by SPTSJUNKIE on Jan 14, 2010 1:53 PM PST up reply actions

Actually...

…per minute, statistically speaking they’re near equals with Calderon being a better 3 point shooter. THe MAJOR difference is Calderon gets 8 million a year and Sergio gets 1.5 million.

I guarantee without the CBA hampering trades if the Raps could deal Calderon for Sergio they would.

by Smills91 on Jan 14, 2010 2:03 PM PST up reply actions

So the Kings are offering 16.25 million up for taking.

Interesting. Not that we didn’t already assume this to be the case but interesting none the less. What Ford is insinuating here is that the Kings are telling other teams that they will take a player who is under contract past this season and earning between 12.18 and 20.31 million. Taking this even a step further, the Kings have 3 point guards, 2 two guards and 4 small forwards under contract so it could be assumed that we could narrow this “player of interest” to a center or power forward, under contract, making between 12-20mill a year or a combination of players, all under contract who fit this criteria. With all the other EC contracts the Kings also have to work with I think this confirms that the Kings are trying to make the “big splash” now for a player under contract long term.

Go to work trade machiners.

I like the way you think on this

mostly because it coincides with what I was thinking. This is a chance to get the 3rd big to go with JT and Hawes . A team who needs a salary dump or an expiring who they don’t think they can resign. If we catch this break, it would make the Kings a playoff team next season, who would have a lotter pick.

I meant basketball player Randolph

not the person. Say what you want about his or Al’s defense but Zach is a big part of what the Griz are doing now. As far as I know no big man on this team plays great D but when they have big games offensively it gives us a better chance to win. With all the talk about getting a great defensive big man there are good playoff teams that don’t have them & bad teams that do have them. Amare/Suns & Dalembert/Sixers come to mind. Believe it or not there aren’t alot of Dwight Howards out there why else would a championship caliber Cleveland team settle for an old washed up Shaq?

mabye everyone is looking at the wrong big guy from Minn

How about Kevin Love? I could see a deal where the kings send Hawes and an expiring contract for love and a bad contract….

Love would be the perfect fit on the kings, and Hawes would be a perfect fit for the Wolves. Love can shoot to help spread the floor, is an incredible passer, and is a beast on the D boards, which is our biggest weakness as a team right now

I agree that Minn shouldn't do this trade specifically

but I wouldn’t say he isn’t availible. Look at what Kahn has done so far, he is undoing everything Mchale did (good or bad, you decide). There is no doubt that the pairing they have isn’t going to get it done, and I wouldn’t be suprised to see either of them moved, to the kings or not.

He screwed up the draft, overpaid for role players like Sessions and Hollins, so he isn’t exactly the smartest GM out there.

Take the euphoria around here regarding Brockman and his playing style

then apply that feeling to a guy that was talented enough to be a lottery pick. That’s Kevin Love in MN, or at least it will be once the cities realize there’s still an NBA team in town.

The final McHale years have purged all but the most loyal fans here, but if they have any hope for casual fans, its based on Love’s marketability.

Legitimate question – I am interested in your ideas. Golden State shipped J-Rich out a couple of years ago for a #8 pick. Ray Allen was worth a #5 pick. So your point has some merit.

I wouldn’t do Martin for Rubio – if we’re worried about how Tyreke and Kevin co-exist, what the hell happens when you put two ball dominant players in the same backcourt like Evans and Rubio?

All I am saying is that, deserved or not, Ricky Rubio has value in Minnesota, other teams, and among the average fan as someone with the potential to be one of the top point guards in the league.

Kevin is what? Top 15-20 SG/SF in the league?
I don’t agree with the perceived value of Rubio. But Minnesota does. And that is all that matters, what Minnesota thinks of him.

I wonder

What is the difference between what we get for KTEC versus what we get for KTEC + Noc, or seperate deals for each?

It’s strange because I almost think that what we’d get back for KTEC would be someone/something like Noc and his contract. That’s because supposedly teams are interested in exchange short term expirings for longer term burdens.

So, we’d probably get something in exchange for KTEC like Noc (a somewhat crappy deal with a few years left) but in big man form. So it’d have to be a multiple team deal (or seperate deals altogether) in order to get rid of Noc and KTEC cause movement for them accomplishes apparently contrasting goals. I’d love to get a Noc-type contract/player in big man form (NTC/PBMF?) for K9 and a 1st rounder and filler for Noc.

Is that about right?

by DustyG on Jan 14, 2010 1:51 PM PST reply actions

I don't think so

there’s no reason for us to trade K9EC for someone else’s marginal deal alone.

The potential deals probably look like:

K9EC for a fair/slightly overpriced contract that runs several years for a player we could use and an asset. Depending on the player involved, the asset could be something like a recent lottery pick someone gave up on or a low upcoming #1.

K9EC + Noc for a player with a bigger ok/bad contract in a position we need.

K9EC + Noc for a pile of crap, most of which is expiring.

K9EC + Noc < K9EC alone, we would get more for K9EC by himself.

Sports Guy podcast with Chad Ford

Was interesting, both agreed that the Kings were a suprise team,

Ford is convinced that Martin and Evans can’t play together, which is amazing as they have only played 5 games together. I wonder why not play the season out and see what they have rather rushing out and making a deal involving a principal party?

Simmons wondered if Evans couldn’t play some small forward and play him with Martin and Beno. An idea with merit akin to the way you get other teams match up to what you are doing ie Nellie ball. To me talent is talent, a good coach should be able to make talent work should he not ie Phil Jackson, bad coaches shoe horn talent into there systems ie Rick Pitino

They discussed a Kings T Wolves deal as Ford maintained that Martins value will never be higher (total drivel), but thought the Wolves would never do a Jefferson for Martin, well logically they shouldn’t, but maybe Kahn is an idiot and may just do the deal. They discussed the history of trades of young bigs for guards, ie the bullets with Rasheed and C Webb, they got Strickland and Mitch.

It is interesting stuff, Ford does seem convinced of the might of his own opinion,

I listened to a lot of the podcast...

Both Ford and BS stroked each other into believing the Bosh for Bynum deal was not only a possibility but an pretty sure thing. I’ll give BS a little room here because he is really a Lakers homer but do these guys actually get paid for doing this shit? Bynum is a BYC player and his salary only counts as 6 million in out going cash. Both teams are over the cap so this deal is IMPOSSIBLE to consummate. What kind of professional basketball writer/expert doesn’t take the 3 minutes to check the salary cap ramifications of a deal before professing it as a possibility?

Fischer + Farmar + Morrison (all expiring) for Beno + Noc + May

Would shore up their dreadful PG spot + bench and clear over 10 mil in cap space for the next 3 seasons for us. Despite liking Udrih at this point, I would have to really consider that if a better, monster deal did not come along before the deadline.
