Still, just throwing it out there… what do you guys think is the deal with K-Mart?

I’m not trying to start a fracas, I just want a reasoned perspective. Is he just rusty? Is he not clicking with the new line-up? Is Westphal not utilizing his abilities well? All of the above? What do you think?

Yeah, that's gotta be part of it, pookey

Last year he was option 1 and 2 and then, when all else fails, “K-Mart drives to the hoop and gets to the line for two”. A bit predicable maybe, but at least it was consistent.

1 for 7 is ridiculous but part of what’s crazy about it is the “7”.

That' what he has to fight back at home

Which is ridiculous. I’ve said it before, he can’t win against all the idiots throwing him under the bus.

He shoots too mcuh, he needs to stop shooting and pass the ball. He scores too much, he’s selfish. He passes the ball, he needs to score and shoot more.

I don't think Reke is getting it to him

enough when he comes around the pick and is open, so it ends up being a huge waste of effort. And then Kevin goes and hides in the corner while Tyreke pounds the rock and drives or shoots or maybe passes to someone else.

I disagree

He has had many chances to shoot the ball and he chose to pass. Whether he gets the ball from Reke or another teammate I think is a bit irrelevant because he is still getting the ball. He’s just not shooting it.

He needs a good offensive game to break the slump. I hope it’ against the Warriors.

Tonight was more about his number of makes than attempts.

Because 7 shots in 24 minutes is not “ridiculous”. Tyreke only took 10 shots in 31 minutes… about the same rate- limited playing time for all the starters tonight.

Or do you think because K-mart has a lot of critics at home he’s lost confidence in his shooting altogether? That’s no excuse to go 1-7 field goals, 3-5 free throws and have 5 turnovers.

Despite it not being reflected in his number of FG attempts, I think K-mart has been putting a lot of effort in trying to get others involved. When we see him passing up the open shots to try and set up someone else (and still mostly going 1-on-1 when he does shoot) and turning the ball over a lot, that might just show that trying to play team ball will take him more time to get used to. That, and rustiness.

No one wants Kevin to pass up open shots; people just want to see more ball movement and a lot better defense. If he responds to that, I think it will be appreciated by his critics and also pay off for the team in the long run.

by Mike11188 on Jan 23, 2010 9:24 PM PST up reply actions

I was talking about the criticism being ridiculous back in Sacramento

It’s like a lot of fans and radio people want him to fail and want to put the whole blame of the team’s slide on his shoulders. I wish StR was the majority in Sacramento because of the smart discourse that happens here, but that’s just not the case

I appreciate a lot the fact that Speed is getting his teammates involved and his assist numbers are reflecting that. His board numbers are also looking good. And I know a lot of people appreciate that, but the critics won’t. Believe me Mike, they’ll stay find of ways of criticizing the guy.

That’s what I think it’s unfair and ridiculous. I wish they would just give him time to get back and wok off the rust. It’s just a tough time for the guy and I can’t help but think that this is all affecting him.

The future begins now...

Kevin Martin deserves better

Personally, never been the biggest Kevin Martin fan but I must admit this guy is getting screwed over. I find it funny how in sports (and in the entertainment industry as well) we love to build these guys up and them bring them down. Personally I get the feeling that Kevin is going to get the raw end of the deal here. Just last year we had Peaches, a Maloof employee, rip him on the radio. There are also alot of people in this league who thought he was too thin and frail to amount to anything and his jump shot is all kinds of ugly. It almost feels like there are alot of people in the media who, at risk of their own reputation, have already said stuff about how he is soft and overrated and are just jumping at anything to blame him for.

As for casual fans trashing him, I dunno what to say. Heck, this past year 49er fans were blaming Crabtree for 49er losses because signed with them and apparantly since he was playing and losing it was his fault. Seems sort of similar to this. Alot of people seem to only pay attention a little bit and I can’t really blame them for thinking “hey the kings lost with Martin but they were winning earlier, therefore he sucks.” I think it is completely wrong and ignores things like opponent records and home/away games but i can’t really blame them. HOWEVER, I find it ridiculous when national sports writers, people who are paid to watch the frickin games, come up with these conclusions and that’s what troubles me the most because they seem to only be reinforcing agendas.

I dunno, sorry if i sound paranoid and probably am exagerating. However, if some of us are getting a little jaded and paranoid about this, can you imagine how frustrated Kevin Martin is getting?

wally with wisdom, rec'd

and ed with truth, rec’d

I dont’ understand the sentiment from the media people and pundits. I am no more accountable or accurate a sage than anyone else but I still find a way to take offense. My current flavor of dislike is Whitey on the Rise Guys, who is a nice, bright and engaging host for the most part. He wants the Kings to trade Kevin Martin for Al Jefferson (next week could be Amar’e Stoudamire) and I guess I thought he had more insight than that.

Right now, Kevin Martin is trying to find his place. He has no problem being the second banana, or third banana, he has done it before. I have no doubt he would prefer to be a second option (or third) option on a good team than a first option on a bad team – not like Big AL or STAT. To me, these two (here for example) are numbers guys with egos. Kevin Martin is a numbers guy without the ego and a better contract – what do you gain?

The current situation is a short lived one. Most of us here on StR are talking forests and the minority ranting about trees.

i don't necessarily have a problem with people talking about wanting jefferson

I mean, i get where it’s coming from, we need another big. Granted he can’t play D and we really need some but (a) it’s hard to judge defense (even if you pay a heck of a lot of attention and espeically if you just casually watch) and (b) yeah he has comparable value to Martin © hit would help even out our roster and (d) although poor defensively it would be nice to have a third competent young big man

But why the heck would even the Twolves do that right now? I mean, i understand them trying to go after granger, both are injury prone and i would think granger is better than Kmart, i could see that being worth the risk but i don’t see why they would risk losing jefferson for kmart right now. They have a whole season left, they know they are getting a lottery pick, why not wait until after the season? After all their biggest addition will be through the draft, so why not wait until after that to decide what they want to do with their roster? I can understand jumping the gun for granger but not Kmart.

By the way, is it just me or does everyone care WAY too much about how our roster looks? Seems like everyone is really over emphasizing the need for certain positions. Yeah the kings really have a goofy roster but (a) why do you have to trade our biggest asset to change that and (b) my goodness do you really think we are going to make the playoffs this year? Seems to me, much like the Twolves, our biggest addition is coming in the draft and it might be best to work out our roster after we figure out how we want to go there.

by Mucho Moss on Jan 23, 2010 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks for the way you phrased this Mucho Moss

I think part is rust, part is not being successful, which has resulted in a confidence crisis and part is trying to fit in.

I think he really does want to respond to the critics and deal with their issues. He’s trying hard on defense. Every time he touches the ball he’s looking for teammates first. Its plainly obvious he wants things to work with Tyreke.

So he’s come back emphasizing these things, always with his great shooting as the ace in the hole, and guess what, for some reason the ace isn’t there. The thing he could always fall back on, probably since he started playing isn’t working for him; and he’s totally lost.

I’d like to say seeing three jumpshots in a row go in will fix everything, and I think there’s a reasonable chance it will. I hate to even throw it out there, but did he come back too early? Is he still hurt?

Hopefully its a giant case of rust combined with a young team trying to reintegrate a huge piece, while already playing terribly on the longest road trip of the year. All I can say is, in the long run, this still might not be a big deal, and I hope Kevin finds his jumpshot soon.

I think it was in the Charlotte game. He used the left wrist to break the fall. Then he held it like it hurt for a while in that game. I haven’t seen him favor it since then, but that could be a factor.

Still a ways to go and he may not come out for the draft. Only thing I will say is that with John Wall, Patrick Patterson and a couple other impressive players on that team, Kentucky looks like a surefire final 4 bid. Look for them in the finals this year. A lot of it might depend on their so-so bench.

Shot Blocker

Right now he looks to mainly be a defensive beast with a great block percentage and rebounding average. He can also score a bit and has proven that he knows how to pass the ball a bit. I like him. RIght now, he scores at 86.5. I don’t see him being a top 10 pick but he can be a good pickup for the Kings if they get a second first round pick in the 20’s. The Kings could use him but not as their top pick.

I've just caught him for minutes of a few games

He has looked good against good competition, and great against lesser competition (no surprise there). He looks to be an able passer and he does have a little shooter’s touch, at least when I have seen him. He’s one of those guys that I just had not heard of, and he’s made an impression when I’ve seen him, even moreso than Derrick Favors (note – I’m not saying Udoh > Favors, just that UDoh > Favors in the games that I have seen).

Very nice

Thanks for the insight. I will look closer at him. Another guy you may want to check out is Dexter Pittman on the Texas Longhorns. Good size, can score, rebound and block shots. Needs to lose some weight but is interesting.

I saw him, and I agree

I think what may separate Pittman and Udoh from guys like Larry Sanders and Justin Vanardo is that Pittman and Udoh have some offensive chops. Vanardo and Sanders look a lot more raw on the offensive end.

To win NBA titles you need players like Manu Ginobili, and I think Omri has the physical tools to get there. There’s no reason why he couldn’t develop into a real menace on defense. He’s quick, he can jump, has long arms, plays smart. Why not?

That's so true of JT as well.

He gets better shots when the game is uptempo. Again, that goes back to Tyreke and the team playing defense. Which they aren’t doing very well right now. The Kings are relying upon players who are not anywhere near their final development point.

So much potential with the kid.

Truly outstanding physical talent and athleticism is something we’ve been in short supply of on the Kings for a while. Obviously in that category Tyreke is almost off the charts. But of course a player needs to be able to channel that talent into a very demanding team sport.

After ‘Reke I think Omri has the highest ceiling on this roster. Donte’ has quite a bit of raw athletic ability too, but to me it looks like Omri will put it all together sooner and better.

To me he has the most raw physical talent of any player on the team other than Tyreke.

Omri has got good size and length, and is strong for a 3. He’s quick and has a nice first step. He can run the floor, good jumping ability. He plays with emotion but seems to have a good hoops IQ.

He nailed some outside shots I didn’t think we’re in his bag of tricks recently too. I just think he has great potential on both offense and defense.

Do me a favor a compare Omri stats as a rookie to other SF stars in the NBA and get back to me with your brilliant insights:

Hedo
Peja
Danny Granger
Dirk Nowitski
Joe Johnson

How do their stats match up against Omri as first year players?

You really have no clue when you further consider what makes a star is an ability to score in a multitude of ways when a lot of areas on the floor: drives, fast break, mid game, long range, Omri has showed us a little of everything in half of a season. This does not even mention defense, rebounding, character traits and other intangibles.

I disagree a little on Omri's talent

only because I have a lot of respect for the talent it takes to stay in front of the best players in the NBA, which Donte has.

I think Ginobili is a little off because I don’t ever see Omri being that kind of facilitator on offense and his ball handling would have a long ways to go.

All of that said, I’m not trying to take anything away from Omri. He’s got tons of potential if it can be directed to the right places.

no because Curry cannot take over games like Tyreke

and he is still a defensive liability. Tyreke brings the whole meal, Curry is a tasty hors d’ourve who may become a delicious appetizer.

The good thing about being young and streaky is that it is just as easy to get on a hot streak as it is to get on a cold streak. We still have a big road trip in Feb, but there are more winnable games on that one. If we can string a few together, we can have a winning month in March.

When we got him on the team, almost all hope of making the playoffs was gone. Remarkably, Ron Artest announced to the news media that the team would make the playoffs. I have a beef with PW's substituting today but while I was looking at stats, I realized something...

PW IS setting his rotation.

Look at this.

In the last 5 games, my man Nocioni has played 7 (Heat), 11(Magic), 4 (Hawks), 21 (Bobcats) and 4mins (Wiz). That means PW has committed to playing him about 4-10mins a night, with the exception of that 21min game where he earned more PT by playing well (5-11 FG, 3-7 3PT’s, part of big comeback against Cats)

With Donte Greene, PW has committed to playing him about 20-25mins a night. His mins in the last 5 games are 29, 16, 16, 32, 20. His stats aren’t that much better than Noce (8, 5, 0, 12, 7pts) but again, we are just talking about PT. And yes, the 32min game was were he was playing better, shooting 4-7, with 12 pts.

Omri Casspi is now PW’s 25-30 min guy, logging in 27, 16, 30 ,22 and 24mins. In the 30min game, he went for 16pts on 8-13 shooting.

JT is a 20-25 min guy (usually because of fouls), logging in mins of 23, 26, 36, 16, 23, Evans (31, 36, 32, 40, 40) and Martin (24, 40, 37, 26, 37)are 35-40min guys.

Beno (13, 24, 30, 24, 22) is now a 25min guy while Spencer Hawes (26, 18, 12, 12, 38) has the biggest fluctuations in PT, mostly because Hawes is inconsistent and can come in with a great performance or a sucky one on any given day.

Brockman (23, 18, 22, 30, 12) seems to be slotted for about 20mins a game while Udoka (16, 12, 7, 4, 12), like Noce is a 4-10min guy

Armstrong, Sergio, K9 and May mop up what’s left of the mins or play according to match ups.

That being said, I now see PW’s rotation. I must say, if he’s consistent with this, then I’m okay with it.

There can only be one Noce!

They may both be role players at best

Hawes has more weapons, but makes more mistakes. Brock provides the basics. To me those two and JT should all play roughly equal minutes (20-30, more to whoever has it going best.).

“If you knew these guys you wouldn’t ask that question.” Couldn’t hear the Q either. Anyone know?

The question was " What about the lack of fighting spirit"

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

Yes, I agree that was probably his reasoning. He was being sensitive to them.

To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.

You never judge a guy by how poorly he plays. Unless he consistently plays poorly.

You judge a guy by how well he plays. PW knows that, but I’m wondering how many media/fans do. I always wonder that actually.

Not sure if you were repeating

but he said something along the lines of “this is not a game where you can judge players on” for another one of the questions.

The future begins now...

by edm7 on Jan 23, 2010 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

I did hear this one and Westphal's response...

My thoughts to his response runs along the line that since this game was so terrible, you cannot judge anyone’s (performance).

(I would agree with that, because the circumstance of having a really bad game fails to present an accurate picture of what each person is capable.)

To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.

by Slam_Dunk on Jan 23, 2010 9:33 PM PST up reply actions

I haven't heard of this either, but I like it...

I think back to when the guys so well together. They set the bar for themselves, because they showed everyone what they were capable of doing. We know that they can one day turn it around and do it again.

To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.

The question was..

what more do you need to see from JT and Spencer now?

by spencerslover4eva31 on Jan 23, 2010 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

I think about the only thing this team can do right now

Is get home, get some sleep, get back into the practice facility, and just try and forget that trip.

by wallywagon11 on Jan 23, 2010 9:11 PM PST reply actions

For some reason

I truly believe it’s not going to be too hard to put this road trip behind them. I feel like they’ll get back to practicing and PW will just say that it’s time to have a new start and they’ll do just that.

The future begins now...

by edm7 on Jan 23, 2010 9:23 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed

I can totally see PW doing that. In fact, I for some reason can also see PW being just like Jimmie Johnson. Sure it does not make much sense, maybe it’s just their hair talking, but for some reason I see him going in there, burning the game tape in front of everyone, telling everyone we’re starting over, followed by an epic 80’s training montage, followed by a bunch of hustle plays and spinning newspapers about how the home team is winning followed by PW and the gang going out for drinks together.

or …. maybe they will just practice a little bit.

by wallywagon11 on Jan 23, 2010 9:33 PM PST up reply actions

Yes!

I can also envision him burning the game tape up and telling everyone that they are starting over. He is unlikely to prolong the pain for them any longer.

The one nice thing about these losses

Is that Ziller can just keep on copying and pasting the recaps over and over again.

by wallywagon11 on Jan 23, 2010 9:35 PM PST reply actions

Another nice thing (silver lining)

They most likely hit rock bottom on this trip and have no place to go but up. The old saying that when you fall down, you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move forward.

To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.

I'm holding off on agreeing with you

Until I return home from the game Tuesday. Lose to the Warriors at home after this trip? Easily lower than rock bottom…

Just a theory, so don't get all hyper, Has Martin reinjured his wrist?

Remember when Martin was blocked going to the rim and 2 guys landed on him. He was rubbing his wrist and seemed to be in discomfort. Then in the next two games he doesn’t even take 10 shots, and he can’t hit his shots (all short) or even his FT’s.

Now, I have nothing substantial to go on, but maybe the wrist is not reinjured as much as tender. I’d think he’d tell the trainer who would tell the coaching staff, but maybe their all hiding that he’s not able to shot up to standard, and trying to work him back slowly.

Just wondering.

it is an unanswerable question. If Kevin Martin reinjured his wrist, or had a new injury

and you were Kevin Martin – would you say anything?

Hey Kevin, you missed a bunch of games last season, 32 this season – many say you are soft and frail – we gave this time to heal and make us better so welcome back – now, what was that about your wrist?

by betweentheeyes on Jan 24, 2010 10:04 AM PST up reply actions

Sore wrist or not, I have not seen him stay in front of anyone. He is still terrible defensively, and plays with no intensity whatsoever. How many seasons in a row is he going to get injured, then we have to go through the re-adjusting period again. Only to have hope for the next season only to have the same thing happen again? He reminds me of peja, a terrific three quarter scorer who dissapears in the fourth.

Haters do what haters do

don’t fight them. They are like the undead in the old movies – you chop them down they get back up, you knock a limb and they grow a new complaint. Unlike the movies, you don’t have to run, just pass them by and they are gone and forgotten.

It’s just that I’m not going to do it given the circumstances. I have a final on Friday and the following Monday. Bad timing I suppose. Such is life.

The haters

Your advice is so true! I having been observing that you cannot argue with them, because you will never win. Ignoring them is the best thing, because they seem to like the attention that they are able to provoke from others. As you say, “Just pass them by.” If they do not get any attention, they will leave.
