Road back to Glory
Im a little mad right now, but i'll try to keep everything reasonable. I'm just going to make a list of ideas, demands coach W & Petrie must do, or else we'll continue to lose.
1. We all love the Brockness Monster, but he shouldn't be starting any games at this point in his career. He's played great coming off the bench with his hustle and rebounding, but him starting hasn't helped us at all. Brock is grabbing less rebounds than Hawes in his last three starts, so maybe coach should let him go back to his role as the all out energy guy off the bench.
2. This is the second strait game were Kmart has taken less than 10 shots. His all around game has really improved but I'd rather have his previous 25 pts avg back. Not saying we should give him the ball and watch all game, but a few set iso's wouldn't hurt. Kmart is playing a little too unselfish. Reke is and will be our future star, but right now I still say Kmart is our best player. If not for injury, he'd be a 2/3 time all-star by now.
3. Time for Shock"n"Hawes to make a comeback. Both players have had their ups and downs this year but we shouldn't give up on them. This time last year, everyone who knew Kings basketball, thought of this tandem first (aside from Kmart). Westphal say's he isn't happy with the defensive effort or toughness of Hawes, but benching him has only made things worse. Also, have the Kings made any attempt to get either C-Webb or Vlade a position on the staff. Just saying, Dwight has Ewing, Bynum had Kareem, hell we could use whoever Bosh has at this point. No disrespect to Reef & Robinson, but we could use the best to become the best.(C-Webb & Vlade aren't likely, just an idea)
4. Are we going to make any more trades this season, and if so, when? We are going to have to turn things around here quick, My expectations may have been a little high, but I still think we could be better. If Chicago is still shopping Hinrich & Thomas, I say what do we have to lose? Hinrich is Beno with better defense, & TT is..........Defense. Also let me say, no trading Kmart, there's a reason why every other team in the NBA wants him.
5. I can't think of anything else, 5 just seemed like a good # to stop at.
Hopefully the return home will bring back what it feels like to have a good game and get a W.
Go Kings!

Realistically this team has over performed thus far into the season. Keep in mind we won a whole 17 games last year. While the past month has been hard to watch, its important that these young guys learn how to win. Losing close games in the long run will help during clutch situations. Its hard but come on ppl don’t stop watching now! Keep going to games and show this team your support!
Tommy Kelly's ass won us that game against Denver!
Learning how to run an offensive set or play team defense will help down the road.
learning how to make turnovers and not score in the 4th quarter doesn’t teach you anything.

I agree
It’s like locking in a bad golf swing. Unless something changes in the way they perform in the 4th, the experience alone isn’t really helping.

You mean
I SHOULDN’T swing at every golf ball like I’m trying to hit a homerun?
That explains a lot.

They need shooters, which we would be offering..........
And they get rid of Hinrich’s contract, which would be worth it for us.

Man, I logon to savage some terrible rants for fun on a Sunday morning
And you throw this perfectly reasonable set of suggestions out there.
I’m not sure giving up on Brockman starting is merited right now, though soon it probably will be. Defensively, the team has set a good tone to start the last two games, which all of the current starters deserve some credit for. I do think its very interesting to see the nosedive Brockman’s numbers have taken. It just goes to show its a hell of a lot easier to come in from the bench playing poor offensive players and get numbers than it is to be the starting center with those responsibilities trying to do the same.
Kevin is more lost than I ever remember him being right now. He’ll start getting his points as soon as his jumpshot starts going in and he gets some confidence. Let’s hope the friendly home court and fans help him out Tuesday.
I don’t think any of us have enough information to make decisions about the big man coaches. There’s no reason to think Webber and Vlade would be better coaches, even if they were better players than Shareef and Truck. If you look closely, you can find improvement in Shock and Hawes, not as much as we hoped, but its there.
Trades are coming, if GP can find takers for K9EC & Noc especially; the season is just starting to warm up, I believe we have about 3 weeks until the deadline.
Free Omri...trade.Noc.
I think Kevin's head is all messed up
I think he’s listened to the trade rumors and the critics who say he’s only a shooter, a ball-hog, etc.
I think he put so much emphasis on him trying to fit in with the team, and with Tyreke in particular, that he decided to not shoot as much, and that, combined with the natural time it takes to come back from an injury, have made him completely lose confidence in his shot.
He needs to shoot the ball. He needs to be a one-two punch with Evans, and above all, he needs to stop reading StR, the Sac Bee, ESPN, and whoever else has been spouting off about his not being able to coexist with Tyreke Evans.
Play the game the way you’ve always played it, Kevin. You’ll be fine.

Part of it....
IMHO. He is exhausted. PW is running him ragged to get him into shape. When, ever, does a guy come back from not playing that long and play every game all game. He should have been slowly brought back in for 10 then 20 and up in minutes so that he would not be so exhausted. Knowing he is spent and has no lift on his shots I think he has responded by not shooting.
he should have came off the bench in his first game, and let the minutes come to him

Off the bench
I completely agree with you on this point. It also might have been better to assess the team chemistry with his return back. Ah, hindsight vision.
To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.
at this point
i want to see Kev shoot like Noc Tues. I don’t even care if he misses 80%, he needs to shoot his way out of this. Reke has shown he’ll get his on his own and K Mart has obviously tried to improve his passing and court vision, but now he needs to gets his stroke back….shoot every possession if that’s what it takes….
Section214 is my hero. Good shakes!
Tyeke is the point guard of the future, Kevin is the point guard for blame
To me, the one thing I see missing that I most want to see return is hustle.
The team is coming out and going through the motions. They are dancing fox trot and the game is playing flamenco. They look slow, clumsy, and are one step behind. And just think, one month ago we fans were looking up and seeing stars, today just black sky.
Next month, who knows?

Kevin has become the Scapegoat
I agree with your fox trot versus flamenco metaphor and Kevin being the subject of blame.
I would suggest that perhaps beneath the still waters, murky water runs deep. All is not right in the team chemistry department and Kevin Martin has been made the scapegoat of it all. No wonder Kevin is all messed. He is trying to do the best he can, but his play (IMHO) has suffered from all the blame, finger pointing, etc. which has been launched his way.
I do not know what the problem is or problems are, but I hope that Coach PW and his assistants can get a handle on it soon and come up with some better solutions.
To be the best, you have to do your best. Otherwise, you are only second-rate.
"what do we have to lose?"
is probably not the sing posted over any successful GM’s door.
Lower their expectations and rise to met them
Only 5 points, your easy on them.
As to point won, The only reason to start Brockman at Center is if you need him there to win, which hasn’t happened, or you don’t think Spencer will be there next year. The theory that Spencer isn’t playing because of his defensive effort, is total bunk. Tyerek and Martin blow their defensive assignments all the time and JT & Spencer are supposed to make some super star defensive play to stop the ball while guarding their own man. If Jon is going to be the starting center then by all means give him playing time, but he isn’t. So, obviously PW doesn’t believe Spencer needs any PT to develop because he won’t be the starting Center next year.
One point on PW, he had all preseason the evaluate players, and he choose May to start at Center and he started Desmond Mason. In resent games he’s brought Ime off the bench before Donte, even though he used Donte to guard some of the best players in the NBA earlier during the Holidays. And, he had him play against SG’s, SF’s, & PF’s, so there’s no position that Ime can defend better than Donte, and Donte is the better offensive player. I believe that PW is under pressure to improve the defense, and that he’s spending too much time searching for a player to bail him out, instead of letting his best players play and learn how to play team defense together. Maybe the fact that the last few coaches haven’t made it half way thru their second year, has him making bad choices.
PT 2: None of the players that subbed for Martin while he was hurt had to shot more than 10 shots a game for the Kings to win. Martin has gone thru slumps before, and doesn’t need to put up 20 shots a game to get out of it. 10 good shots will be enough, and in the meantime there is nothing wrong with him working on his defense and working on getting easy shots for others. After all those are the weaknesses of his game.
No. 3: JT is not a center, at least not yet. He has very poor low post skills and no left had at all. His jumper looks good but he isn’t consistent, and it’s going to take time. He’s fairly good at creating his own dribble and driving to the rim, but he’s a poor finisher. He isn’t getting the number of put backs, tip-ins and dunks as last year, because he must vacate the paint to make room for Tyreke to drive. The addition of Tyreke has take away the best part of JT’s offense from last year, and the rest of his offense isn’t fully developed yet. When he plays at his natural position PF, he looks better, and eventually his shot will come. It’s not the coaching.
Spencer is our most efficient big offensively, inside 10 feet. His problem is that he’s not patient with his shot, and defensively he is either to quick to leave his feet (for blocks & rebounds), or he screens out his man too long and never trys to rebound. These are issues that are fixed by experience and consistent playing time, and right now he isn’t getting enough of either. If we had another future starting center, I might understand him not getting 40 mpg, but we don’t. If things don’t change, this will be another wasted year for Spence and I’d rather see him traded at the deadline.
No. 4: No, I don’t think we are going to make any significant trades this year. K9’s EC is just as valuable this summer, than it is in Feb. So, unless someone comes calling and offers a major talent, for his expiring contract and some or our young talent, I thing GP waits for the draft and the FA market next summer. I would not exchange K9’s EC for more salary just to move Noc. I don’t think GP does anything major until he decides where Martin fits on the team.

Really makes me feel like a moron. I must admit, I feel like I am one of those people bashing Spencer’s defense but in reality I don’t really think I know what to look for.

I keep seeing guards flying at him
and although yeah i know it’s on tyreke and martin that they are penetrating so well but at the same time apparantly i expect spencer to have magical powers.
maybe people just start judging him from his body language. or maybe because he “looks like” a big slow bad defensive white guy. or because he’s republication (sorry i had to throw that one in since it is ALWAYS thrown in)

Good read
Except for the part about Spencer being traded. I know 90% of the people here won’t agree with me on this, but Hawes is the best big we have. The only other bigs we have worth comparing are JT & Brock at this point.
Ranking of the Bigs
(Scoring) Hawes – JT – Brock
(Rebounding) Brock – JT – Hawes
(Shot-blocking) Hawes – JT – Brock
First we can eliminate Brockman cause he is purely a rebounder, he does every thing else below avg. The 2nd best is JT, at this point he doesn’t do anything extremely well that stands out. He’s a steady avg big that can get you 10-15 pts & 10 boards a night, which is great. Then we have Hawes. He’s like the Donte’ Greene of big men, with the potential to excel at everything. Hawes is the 2nd or 3rd best passer on the entire team. Scoring wise, you could take away his 3pt shooting and he’s still the best scoring big we have.
In my eyes the only thing that’s stopping Hawes from becoming a top 5 C in the league is his aggressiveness. The sad things is, if he missed his first 2 shots, coach Westphal wouldn’t give a chance at a 3rd FG until late 2nd quarter. Simply put, Coach needs to loosen the leash on players if he wants them to get any better. We aren’t getting anywhere near the playoffs this year, so Coach W should give Hawes an oportunity to reach his potential, and 20 min. a game isn’t going to do that.
KINGS WILL BE 09-10 CHAMPIONS
I can agree with most of that
I do think Brockman is more than purely a rebounder. He plays man defense very well, and he’s almost as quick as Hawes with his help defense. JT is the weakest help defender of the 3.
Your over estimating JT’s contribution. He’s only averaging 12.7ppg and 8.8 rpg for the season, but most of that came early in the season when our schedule was easier. In the 12 games played in January, he’s only at 9.4ppg and 7.6rpg. He is more aggressive which is probably why people think he’s doing so much better than Hawes. But, Spencer has a higher TS% and doesn’t foul as much.

pretty cynical
Spencer’s biggest problems on D is that he needs to stay with his man most of the time whatever the result and hold his ground more often than try to block every shot. Like his offensive game, he needs to simplify on defense.
And he has been showing signs of simplifying his game on offense and the result is that he’s been more efficient of late. If he needs to learn that off the bench in 25 minutes I’m OK with it. 25 minutes is plenty for development. This whole, ’you’ve got to get 40 minutes to learn’ thing is nonsense.

I'm actually ok with 25 mpg as long as it's the same for all the other guys
I guess we can give Tyreke 25mpg, and Martin, and all the players that are going to be around next year. The problem I really have is playing guys out of position. And, JT & Brockman aren’t centers, now if we want JT to be our center next year and that’s why were giving him major minutes at center, then I’m fine with it. But, I don’t think it’s going to go down that way. I still think his real role is as a PF, and if I’m right then he needs to play major minutes at PF.
I have no problem with JB getting 25 mpg, split backing up JT & Spencer, but then Donte and Omri need to get 25mpg too. Besides we’re like a game and a half out of being the 3rd worst team in the league, how much worse can it get.

I'm curious, What is it about JTs game
That makes you think he can’t play Center in this Center starved league? His current lack of developed low post skills?

Not a Center, now.
Tell me how many times JT has gone up for a rebound, against the other teams center, gabbed the ball and come down with it. He has normal length and less than average lift. Even his offensive rebounds last year were enhanced by the number of tips he made off his own misses. And, his unwillingness or inability to use the backboard or dunk, is a definite warning sign. 100% of his dunks last year and 93% of his dunks this year are assisted. He just doesn’t go up get the rebound and take it back up strong for the dunk.
Last season 54% of his shots were in close, mostly dunks and tip-ins. this year more of his shots are outside jumpers 52%. He’s only making 35% of his tips this year, and if you don’t count dunks and tips, only 33% of his offense comes from close in and he’s only making 35% of those shots. So, right now his inside game is 61% assisted. Overall, he’s shown no improvement over last year. His rebounds are up 19% and his ppg are up 22%, but his mpg are also up 19%.
So, almost no unassisted interior game, poor shooting inside, no shot blocking, poor rebounding for a center, and he gets into foul trouble with his man defense. NaC.
