Thank You
22 minutes. 9 boards? Millsap 14 boards and Spencer doesn’t play the fourth quarter?
Kings rule! (They are royalty - right?)
I dont understand that at all
How can Spencer get his confidence up when he does what he is supposed to do to then sit and watch his team get beat in the fourth?

The future begins now...
I've just had it with poor officiating
I mean, its just impossible to win close games that way. I literally stopped watching after that Millsap lucky fade away crap garbage shot.
I think Westphal was trying to teach something by keeping him in there, and I hope he learned it, because it cost the kings a W

My first time questioning Westphal
Hawes took a seat as a result of the match ups that Sloan put on the floor. When Okur sat, Hawes sat. Given the fact that no one could stop Millsap, why not give Spencer a try? And then how about posting up Spencer against the small lineup, or at least running him out of the high post to open up the middle for offensive boards?

completely, utterly agree
rather than letting sloan dictate things, why not go at spencer and make them adjust. there is no doubt that the kings offense is rather predictable atm

Hawes wouldn't have stopped Milsap
Wasn’t it just like 20 minutes ago that Hawes said he wasn’t good at defense and has no intention at getting better at it?
by Pollard4LIfe on Jan 29, 2010 10:11 PM PST up reply actions
Maybe not
But nothing else was working, and Hawes was playing well. So what do you have to lose?
And I do not believe that Hawes said that he wasn’t good at defense and had no intention of getting better at it, but perhaps I missed that quote.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
when we go small
and have 4 wings plus JT I am thinking Hawes might be the better big. He spreads the floor better because of his passing and what he gives up in athleticism he makes up for by being a 3 point threat, which JT isn’t.
Section214 is my hero. Good shakes!
Rebounding
Spencer is outrebounding JT 2-1 in the last 5 games. Seems to be a smart move to have him on the loor.

I wrote a post last night then deleted it
my take on the Kevin/Evans mish-mosh: (the short version)
Martin only gets traded if Evans doesn’t perform. The face of the franchise has changed it is now Evans > Martin. Martin has time to come back to his standard. The pairing doesn’t work only if it lessens Tyreke. Otherwise, Kevin stays and they work it out.
Wow, that was easier than a whole post.

Yeah but
I don’t think he’s gonna grow into his body or gain any gerth, wasn’t he a 2 guard until his senior year in h.s. And if he does put on weight or muscle don’t you think it will affect him for the worse?
PG, actually
and no. Just think of the way he started the season. That’s his upside. I’ll gladly wait out this year and the next hoping he grows into it.

JT’s 8.7 boards puts him 8th in the league behind: Camby, Randolph, Bosh, Boozer, Odom, Martin and Scola.

if Paul Mislap (32 pts/ 14 rebs/ 7 asst) was our starting PF and not JT (7 points / 4 rebs / 6 fouls/ 3 TOs ) the Kings would have a .500 record….anyone care to disagree?
JT was schooled all night and I wonder why PW had him on the court as much as he did? Why not give Donte Greene a chance to guard Mislap? It is not like we would miss JT’s offense. He has none. And I would have played Spencer more. Just because the Jazz go small does not mean we have to adept to whatever they do.

What was interesting
is that Millsap was a zero in our first trip to Salt Lake despite getting plenty of burn. He was a beast tonight. That Kevin Martin guy is pretty good, too. And I though Tyreke and Kmart started to play off each other a lot better. The offense with Kevin at point guard was also interesting.

Brockman had 5 fouls in 12 minutes
and got beaten repeatedly by Milsap and FWIW, Donté was getting torched by AK early

Spencer should’ve stayed in. Wasn’t putting up big points but he was rebounding like his buddy Brockman. JT on the other hand should’ve been taken out before he fouled out. 4 rebounds is unacceptable. He got abused on the boards by Millsap.
I’m glad to see that now that Kevin’s playing well Beno’s sucking again. Kidding of course. Its too bad he had an off shooting night. And why the hell are the Kings shooting 20 three pointers when they’re obviously not falling?

obviosuly he is stinking it up on offense atm, but this wouldnt be too hard to take if he was playing solid d. unfortunately he is often getting completely outplayed. it is a quandary right now that’s for sure

Great question
He’s been logging 22 a night for the Bulls in January. So the question would be, would the Bulls think that Noc > Thomas when it comes to their playoff efforts?
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
It's an excellent question.
I actually think Donte could be a great stretch 4 in time if a team takes patience with him and gives the requisite time to let him develop. He has the work ethic, and understanding to do it. It’s just finding a team willing to let him have the growing pains it takes to take that next step and see if it can happen.
Then again, I’m not sure Chicago is smart enough to even have a philosophy despite their recent winning.

Jerome James is very much under performing, and just looks to be a EC at this point, TT has been getting a lot more minutes and doing more with them. Like someone else said earlier though it will be moving Hinirchs or Salmons contract to get them to bite on Noc.
Judgment day is coming!
Yep that's very true.
The thing is that Chicago has about 37 mil & change in GUARANTEED salary for next season. There is little reason to take on Nocioni when they can keep Thomas and let him walk in the off-season. (Or even, god forbid, keep him.)
Chicago, if anything, will be trying to shed a major salary before the deadline (or you think they would be anyway) to get more room under the cap for next season. Of course, there is little incentive for other teams to help Chicago do that unless they sweeten the pot.

Musings
I wonder how Hawes and Tyrus Thomas would look playing together? Thomas is a pretty good defender – he is easily better than anyone that we put on Millsap tonight. Thomas’ defense, rebounding and shot blocking would be a nice complement to Hawes’ offensive skillset. Hawes can probably provide the bulk of the big man low post offense that this team is going to run, which won’t be much – most of our in the paint scoring is going to come from our wing players cutting to the basket or our bigger guards posting up smaller guards.
Just a thought.

He's got a rebounding rate of about 10 per 36 minutes this year.
But he also has a blocked shot rate of darn near 3 per 36 minutes, and he defends. MY thought here is that if Hawes is your center, you need a defensive minded PF. And vice-versa – if JT is your PF, you better get a defensive minded center.
I can see Hawes and Thompson as part of a big man rotation, but I just don’t see the two of them as a good fit as starters together.

And that could work, too
But JT needs to get better in the high post, and the yin to his yang would need to be a Dalembert or Chandler type. I think that this too would be an improvement over our current situation.

I think Tyrus Thomas would be a very nice fit
Three concerns:
1) What’s he cost to get? If he ends up costing Donte for example, it might change priorities for our #1 pick. Of course getting Noc out of here is a bonus for everyone concerned.
2) What’s he cost to keep? What does his next contract look like compared to a FA?
3) Are we sure we want to do this now, or would it be better to see what our #1 turns into? That’s the only reason I can see avoiding giving up assets now.
Free Omri...trade.Noc.
at the risk of helping make the post game part of the A.T.T. II (or III)
Ty Thomas is would be a nice acquisition, but the missing piece he is not ( I know you are not saying he is, this is a general reply) . He is another example of an inconsistent big with potential, hence the availability. The frontcourt roulette is already spinning with two balls – Shock and Hawes – adding TT means that when all 3 play well together the Kings hit the trifecta.

Poor Sergio
Still in the doghouse. Udrih was terrible tonight (0/5). Greene with no second look after 4 minutes of play. Udoka is fine on D but on offense, he isn’t making any outside shot. 0/3 on 3-pointers? Wow.
Kings rule! (They are royalty - right?)
Was working so I didn't get to see the game
But from the looks of the boxscore it looks like Kevitron was finally scrapped and Kevin Martin made his debut and Tytin was great, Spencer played well in limited minutes, same with Omri, and everyone else was pretty terrible. Am I right?
I do have some issues with Westphal continuing to play JT more minutes than Spencer when Spencer has clearly resolved to working harder and is now rebounding at a better rate than JT for the last couple weeks or so, and is also the better defender (I don’t think thats an argument). Start Brockman or Noc for JT, and bring JT off the bench, see if that lights a fire under his butt.

I have to admit I have been losing trust in PW
by MichaelMack on Jan 30, 2010 12:00 AM PST up reply actions
I'm not losing trust in him.
It’s going to take time, and I think the early season success has driven an expectation that PW is the magic answer to all that cures the Kings. I disagree with his decision to not try Spence on Millsap tonight, but that doesn’t mean I think he was a bad hire or that I think he’s done a bad job with this team as a whole. Quite honestly, I think PW is a victim of some of the expectations he has for himself and the team by fans expecting that this stuff happens overnight. It’s a huge process.
It’s amazing, but I’ll use MIke Woodson as an example (even if the analogy loses some of the translation because Woody is on his first coaching stint, and PW is on his third). When Woodson took over the Hawks in 2004, that team was bad. Like, seriously fucking A winning 18 games bad. And, the next year? Won 26 games. The fans of the Hawks were angry, even though this was the same team that lost 13 games 2 seasons prior with god awful ownership. The Hawks slowly built, despite the terrible misstep, throught the draft to the chagrin of Woody’s coaching record. Over the years, people have killed Billy Knight (the former GM of the Hawks who drafted Marvin Williams over Chris Paul) for not taking Paul The irony is, though, that the Hornets haven’t been much more successful than the Hawks have in that time.
Now, the Hawks could be a championship contender, and the Hornets are really stuck. Byron Scott who won the coach of the year in 2008 is now fired. Mike Woodson is still coaching the Hawks.
The moral of this story is that one day, or one month, doesn’t necessarily keep a coach from doing what they do best. Paul Westphal was the right choice in June, and I believe he is the right choice now. I have very few quibbles with what he’s done, and I don’t know if putting Spence on Millsap would have made a difference. I just wanted to see PW try a different combo than the players he was using. But that doesn’t make a difference.
Having said all that, PW is doing a great job, and I’m thrilled the Kings have won 16 games and seriously raised expectations. If you ask me, that’s an incredible complement to Paul Westphal, the coaching staff (Eyen, Elie, Robinson, Gates, Coachie, Reef), and the young players who are doing everything possible to win games.

I don't disagree, but I do have another option
PW is looking to defensive minded players to quick fix the defensive problems. But, the biggest problem is the poor team defense. Price picked JT, and Millsap cut around JT into the lane for an easy layup, Martin was covering Price and didn’t switch. People were cutting down the lane off of screens and getting right to the rim with no weakside help. I could go on, but you watch the games, so you know what I’m talking about.
You can’t expect any one player to stop Millsap when his players are setting screens and picks for him and no one on the Kings knows how to defend them. Yes, I think Spencer should have gotten 36 minutes, and to hell with matching up with Sloans lineup. Spencer is our best weakside defender, not as athletic as Kirilenko, but Spence and Donte are the best we have. And, PW needs to start playing the best we have, instead of constantly throwing players into the game and hope that something good happens.
I would have played Spencer at center and Donte on Millsap in the 4th. Donte is a better defender than Noc or JT. If Sloan stayed small, than I go to Hawes on offense, and I let Donte and Spencer double on Millsap on defense. As they say, the best defense is a good offense. ;p)

As for Westie, PookeyG hit the nail on the head. rec’d.
Westphal and the team are drowning on the rising tide of expectation to some degree. There are so many ways PW is a win: record, team chemistry (locker room wise), playing the kids, his overall cost value, who he isn’t (Jordan, Saunders, Rambis), and mostly who he is – the guy has won me over big time with his attitude and avuncular pressers.
Defense is a big bugaboo. It takes discipline, time and discipline. Sloan, Popovich, Brown are three defense oriented coaches – all HoF-ers – and if they were to be magically transplanted to Head Coach in Sactown – they all might retire the defense might be significantly better, but with this young squad and 44 games in, it is a tough call.

The irony is bte with regards to Sloan
That the Jazz biggest bugaboo the last few season’s was their defense.

Dexter is amazing, and Season 4 just left me staring at the screen for a good 5 minutes
Zombieland is on the list. I just watched (500) Days of Summer and it did nothing for me, and Transformers II which I stopped after 30 minutes (even Megan Fox is not that alluring – that is one embarrassingly bad motion picture).
PG – The Wire. Season One is good, the following Seasons are great.

I've seen different parts of each season.
I wish I had the money to buy each season on DVD.
