Laker fan asking legit question

So I've been a Laker fan since about 1989. That was when I was 5 years old and I cried when the Lakers lost to stupid Isaiah Thomas in the Finals. So I still hate Isaiah Thomas. I also hate the Utah Jazz when the Shaq-Kobe Lakers couldn't get over the hump when Stockton-Malone kept beating them. And of course I hate the Boston Celtics. It's in my DNA. However, I don't hate the Sacramento Kings. Yes, there was a bitter rivalry and it was a good rivalry I believe. It was fun to see the players go at it, and it was fun to see a 7 game series, and it was fun to see them play on Christmas. But just like I hate Thomas, the Jazz and the Celtics, I don't have the same hatred for the Kings. To be quite honest, the only person I despise on your squad is Garcia. (I just think he's a douche). But everyone else is pretty cool. Kevin Martin is a scoring stud, Spencer Hawes reeks of basketball I.Q., and Beno Udrih is on my fantasy team, so he's cool.

But my legitimate question is do Kings fans still hate the Lakers? I know that Portland absolutely can't stand us, but they're from Oregon. They have nothing else to do. I also know that most people hate Kobe outside of the southern California. So I'd understand if it's a hatred because of you love to hate us. But is there still any hatred from the early 2000's rivalry? Please tell me. Good day.

I don't hate anybody

but I dislike the Lakers more than any other basketball team. Laker fans not so much. The only Laker fans I despise are the ones who come here and troll after the Lakers beat the Kings. You seem like a nice person and if you cried when the Lakers lost when you were 5, then that flaw in your personality has to be your parents fault. So yes, the hatred is still there, but many of us who were born and raised in Northern California were taught to hate Southern California, don’t ask me why. As far as I know the reciprocal is not bred into kids born is SoCal. It;s not just a basketball thing.

Yes

We were robbed of a championship. The hurt we felt at that loss is not a thing that can be described. It is a loss that is not a thing that can be forgiven. It is a painful moment in time that remains in the heart of each of every Kings fan of that day. It is relived during every loss to the Lakers. Thus, there is no forgiving the Lakers and they will always be Fakers. Fakers to a crown that the King earned and deserved.

Kobe the Bfing rapist makes me puke with his smug attitude

and Gasol is a little hard to watch when they do a close up after a play he didn’t like.
But I have no problems with Phil, except when he is grumpy cuz he hasn’t had the hippy lettuce that day…and I don’t like what Fisher did to Utah, and he annoyed me that time he cried like a 2 year old on the bench when he didn’t win his 10th title. Your backup guards think they’re hot shit when in fact theyare cold crap, but they don’t play that much so its ok. I have learned to watch the L…ers , my trick is I turn away for every face close up before it annoys me. It would also help if they didn’t every call in the last two minutes of games (like when Christy fouled Kobes elbow with his face). I enjoyed Rick Fox when he chases people around the Arena. All in All though, I’m good. Ask me again in a couple of years when the King’s are serious contenders.

just surprising

if i wasn’t from LA I would hate the Lakers too. it’s easy to hate the best team in a sport – and Kobe is insanely easy to hate. I don’t blame him for that. But hating Fisher for moving to help his daughter is kind of weak.

Hate the guy for making more clutch shots than regular shots. Hate the guy for flopping. But not for leaving Utah.

by bearface on Jan 6, 2010 10:38 AM PST up reply actions

I live in Utah

And at first, everyone here was very supportive of Fisher and his stated reason for asking out of his contract. Everyone understands that family comes first. But he didn’t have his daughter’s treatments in LA. They were in New York.

Fisher realized that there’s no place like home and used his daughter’s illness as an excuse. That, in fact, is reprehensible.

I never really minded Fisher too much

But the cheap shot he threw on national television (against the Cavs on Christmas) really opened my eyes a bit. Just because you don’t get manhandled as a team very often isn’t an excuse to cheap shot a guy.

Interesting

I actually think the Cavs would be WAY worse, but the Lakers would still be a little worse. The Cavs are just plain horrible, but the Lakers are built to support Kobe’’s style of play.

Either way, finding anyone that isnt a Laker fan to argue Kobe being better than LeBron would be tough. At this point in their career’s, its not even close. In each’s prime against one other, I dont know.

Jeez, C-A-R you are a fool

First off, what would make you think I am a Laker fan? Read ANY of my posts, hell my signature and you’d see I am not.
Secondly, I clearly stated that I think LeBron is better than Kobe at this point, AND that the Cavs would be worse off with Kobe than Lebron.
Thirdly, the your style of fanhood is EXACTLY why the Lakers are so hated. If there were millions of Cavs fans like you, it would be no different. You are a douche. Total douche.

Lastly, there is NO WAY you think LeBron’s supporting cast is better than Kobe’s. If you did, then you would have to admit Kobe is better than LeBron since the Cav’s didnt win the championship, but the Lakers did.
Come on, sure Shaq has a dozen or so All-Star games in his past, but those days are LONG gone. As you can read in my post below, I’ve got no problem with Shaq. But clearly, he is slow and old. Can you actually claim to think Delonte West, Mo Williams, Shaq and Hickson are better than Gasol, Fisher, Bynum and Artest, plus Odom off the bench? Its not even close. They only reason you have any all-stars besides LeBron is you play in the East. The talent level is insalenly low over there. The West has 10 guards that are better than Williams, he might not even make the ballot in the West.

Stop making your team look bad and go back to playing World of Warcraft. Tool.

I honestly feel that this year the Cavs without LeBron would be better than the L*kers without Kobe. Last year they were not, but they added Shaq, Anthony Parker, and Jamario Moon to the rotation, while developing JJ Hickson another year. The L*kers have better starters, but there’s no way they can match the depth of the Cavs with the aforementioned players as well as Mo, Delonte West, Anderson Varajao, and Big Z – not even mentioning a guy like Boobie Gibson who doesn’t even see the floor anymore with all the quality players they have flying around.

I'll say it again

The L*kers have better starters, but their bench sucks, especially at the guard spot. Cleveland has a clear advantage at point, shooting guard is a wash (assuming Kobe & Lebron are out, and Artest moves to shooting guard while Odom plays small forward), LA has the advantage at the forwards, and the centers are a wash. The Cavs then have three bench players better than anyone left on the L*kers, and a fourth, Boobie, who would be about equal to any of the retread point guards that the L*kers could put on the floor.

dirty dirty dirty players the Lakers are

heres another huge reason- they are practically the yankees of basketball, due to la’s financial situation they can buy out the best players and load their team with talent and not chemistry. its a little unfair that the Lakers are stacked with money, regardless of the bootsy luxury tax

by Harrisonyaka on Jan 4, 2010 10:52 PM PST reply actions

I'd say this was true

If not for the fact that they don’t ho out and buy players like the yankees do.

The yankees bought free agents like Mark Teixiera(or however the hell you spell his name) and CC Sabathia. The only significant peices the lakers got through free agency are Ron artest who they signed for the Mid Level Exception and Fisher

Kobe has been with the team his whole career.
Pau was gifted by Memphis
Bynum was drafted
Lamar came via the Shaq trade
Farmar was a draft pick
Shannon Brown and Morrison arrived via trade
Mbenga and powell are minimum contracts
Walton was a drat pick

But you’re right in the fact that they can pretty much afford not to lose anyone if they really want to keep them

by KBZ on Jan 6, 2010 7:11 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, but a couple of those were gifts...

Kobe was a gift from the Hornets when he refused to play for them

Brown and Morrison were traded to the Lakers for Vladimir Radmanovic, one of their worse contracts that they managed to escape from thanks to the Bobcats. I’d also consider that a gift.

Trevor Ariza was a gift from the Magic for Maurice Evans and Brian Cook.

The Lakers get too many gifts. It’s disgusting.

"HARK! BUT LOOK OVER HERE, IT'S A COST CONTROLLED COCO CRISP! DOES MY USE OF ALLITERATION HYPNOTIZE YOU?" (PL78)

by CaliforniaJag on Jan 7, 2010 8:51 PM PST up reply actions

I see how you might think that but

I thought the deal had been done before the draft day trade. Jerry West went out to a combine and checked Kobe out and took him for a ride in his Lexus(it’s pretty well publicized). Then West had Charlotte pick Kobe for the Lakers with Charlotte knowing that they’d get Vlade, plus Vlade was at the top of his game at the time and Kobe was a huge gamble as he was the first non-big to declare for the draft out of high school.

Brown was a throw-in who barely got minutes in Charlotte and Adam Morrison is Adam Morrison. Cats needed an outside shooter and they ended up turning Radman into Stephen Jackson.

Trevor Ariza couldn’t even break into the rotation in Orlando after riding the pine in New York

They were all pretty much diamonds in the rough until they went to LA

Trades haven’t always gone their way. Remember Caron Butler to the Wizards for Kwame Brown.

Kwame Brown. THATS disgusting.

I grew up a Laker fan before the Kings here....

Magic was the man and I was a big Worthy and AC Green fan but when the Kings moved to Sac, I started following the local team. I think most Kings fans who are old enough kind of started out this way because the Lakers so good all through the 80’s.

Now, the hatred that most of feel is from the entitled bull-shit years earlier this decade with Shaq, Kobe, Horry, Fox, Fischer, Jackson etc. Shaq and Phil went out of their way to insult the people of Sacramento and that will probably not be forgotten. Kobe is just an arrogant fuck and screwing/raping a young girl in a hotel room while your wife is at home makes him pretty much, to use your term- a douche. Rick Fox? Doug Christie and his wife squared us up there. Horry? Unforgivable for a power forward to be so far out of position that he is waiting at the three point line to beat you.

Do I still hate the Lakers? Yes. Will that hatred last forever? No, Kobe will be gone eventually and I refuse to cheer for the LA Kings of Anaheim or the San Jose Kings so I will never say forever.

No law when it comes to me.
I let you type critics write and I just keep it hood.

To be perfectly honest

I don’t hate the Lakers. I don’t think they are worth the time, effort, or the bother to think that much about them. Part of what creates the talk about the Lakers is how much dislike they generate. You take that away, and basically the Lakers are another big market team. The reason fans hate the Lakers because of the consistent victories. But, you can only get so many gifts and eventually that luck will lose out. The Lakers will not get gifts from the lottery as they did with Magic & Big Game James 3 years apart. (Not to mention Byron Scott at 4th overall in 1983.)

Over the past few years watching him he always plays a little chippy and a little dirty. Plus I just don’t think he’s that good. I’m actually really surprised that there is still so much hatred. But I guess I understand. I know why so many people don’t like Kobe, but to be fair he is the best player in the NBA. I feel like Garcia plays with a certain self entitlement without having accomplished anything.

um, I'm not really sure this is a legit question.

Have you been smoking with the Zen Master? Did you fall on your head like Ron-Ron?

The universe does not revolve around Los Angeles. Don’t act so innocent yet condescending. The Lakers and their fans are like the hot girl in high school who nobody likes because she is actually a b*tch. Once in awhile, she might pretend to be your friend, but only to remind you how much better she is than you.

So, thanks, Mr. Faker fan. We are so happy you barely notice us enough to affect all the great things going for for you right now. My only happy thought is that maybe, like that hot, shallow, evil girl that ruled high school, the Lakers will experience a shock when the league realizes that they can get what they want elsewhere. That is, when LeBron goes to NY. That’s right. The Lakers and their fans will be used and washed up and old and fat with STDs and kids. That brings such joy to my heart.

If I had one wish, it would be to see the Kings beat the Lakers. Every time. Always. Forever. I want so badly to see the Kings shock the Lakers in a playoff series, and then go on to win a championship. I think many Kings fans will agree that winning a championship would be nice, but it would be a 10 to the 40 times better if they met the Lakers and beat them in the playoffs. Especially if that morally degraded, obsessive compulsive, smug, whining, lying, boastful, entitled, bitchy, bratty, misogynist ingrate douchebag you call a shooting guard is still getting away with rape, of women, the league, the referees, and the integrity of the beautiful game we call basketball.

I hate hate hate the Los Angeles Lakers. If you are Rick Fox, tell him to stay away from Sacramento.

I meant if you see* Rick Fox

I also find it disgusting, that, even as you pretend to be friendly, you have to take not-so-subtle digs at Portland fans, who are some of the most passionate, intelligent, and loyal fans in the NBA, if not all of basketball, or any sport.

Maybe it is hard to relate to, seeing as how Fake Show fans are none of those things. Because, if they were, they would probably watch the Clippers instead.

I am not taking a cheap shot at Portland

It’s more of a joke. On the contrary, I respect Portland fans. But their “passion” can be a little much at times. Plus I don’t think that anyone outside of southern california believes a Laker fan to be a true basketball fan. A true fan of the game. Most people believe Laker fans to be stupid, rich, always on our cell phones, and not know a damn thing about basketball. Part of this post was to represent a the portion of Laker fans who are actually legitimate people in the world. I don’t live in L.A., but I live in Orange County and I get a lot of flack for it because they believe I’m surfing all the time with my bros and catching totally awesome tans.

My friends and I are basketball fans FIRST before Laker fans. And just because the team I root for is the team you loathe doesn’t mean that you should judge my intentions of the post.

Well, I was having a hard time figuring out what to make the choices

Obviously one choice would be to beat the Lakers…however, no Kings fan would take beating the Lakers over an NBA Finals win, even if the win vs. the Lakers was in the Western Conference Championship. No Kings fan would take beating the Lakers over an NBA Finals APPEARANCE, even, since an appearance = a chance to win. I guess that’s the line…in any situation in which the Kings lose in the playoffs, I’d be happiest with a win against the Lakers, but I wouldn’t trade a win against the Lakers combined with a guaranteed loss later on for a playoff elimination at a higher level of the playoffs.

Yup.

I used to be a fan of the Kings (around the Mitch Richmond era) and then root for the Lakers if they made the playoffs, because they were both in California and west coast teams and the Kings never made the playoffs.

Once the Kings started getting better, I eventually sided with the Kings, outright, during the Jason Williams era. I was ecstatic that the Kings were finally making the playoffs for once and became devout, especially at the thought of a championship coming to my local home team.

The Kings became MUCH better, and after YEARS of waiting, they finally had a shot at the championship. Shaq started name-calling at the Kings, the Laker fans weren’t that much better. I grew a hatred toward the Lakers from this. I couldn’t believe my eyes when Horry made that last second shot, or how bad the officiating was in game 6. The Kings “lost” that series and Laker fans kept gloating. I grew a deep hatred toward the Lakers and their fans, because of that. …And my frustrations were vented a little when Rick Fox was punched in the face, later on.

The family fell apart, but my heart for the Kings still remained. Laker trolls kept swarming back to the Kings’ boards, mentioning 2002, and still do to this very day. My anger at the Lakers still remains. A part of me still wants karmic justice to be served to both the Lakers and their “fans.”

So, in short, yes I do still hate the Lakers.

my $0.02

One of the issues I have with that team from LA is that the majority of their “fans” ride the bandwagon. If they had even a few years of mediocrity, there would be far fewer sightings of purple and gold paraphernalia in the streets. (This statement was agreed on by a friend of mine that roots for your team, Pharoah).

Also, it seems that a good percentage of the attendance in the Forum is just there to see and be seen. Many people can be seen during broadcasts paying more attention to their phones, even while the game is going on.

I appreciate real fans. If you have supported a team for years, through thick and thin, then I respect you for it.

THERE ARE BANDWAGON FANS

When Shaq left to Miami, everyone took down the Laker flags from their cars, less people attended the games, rating were down and there was not a sing Kobe Jersey in sight. But now that we’re in championship contention once again the flags come out, the douchebags scream, and the celebrities show up to the games. HOG WASH. People only see what’s on TV. They see Justin Timberlake and Denzel Washington at the games and think it’s just a show. (BTW, Jack Nicholson is a true Laker fan because he was at every game post-Shaq, so naturally we all love him).

I agree there are bandwagon fans, but that’s what happens when a team wins. I can remember when Arco Arena was literally the LOUDEST arena in the league then after the Webber-Bibby-Divac-Peja days were over it didn’t have the cowbells anymore. That’s what happens when your team wins, so don’t take it out on the real fans.

My problem

My problem isn’t with Laker’s fans in Los Angeles…. My problem is with Laker’s fans in Sacramento… At the last Kings / Lakers match at Arco it was about 60/40 Kings/Lakers fans but it felt like just the opposite.

I don’t buy that all of these people came up here from L.A… A lot of them are young and sitting with their parents that are Kings fans. Heck my son was a Laker’s fan up until a couple of years ago. Kids like it when someone wins… That is why I changed favorite football teams all through the 80’s.

Anyway, point being, a lot of the Laker’s fans in Sacramento are 100% grade A nut swingers… Bandwagon fans that seem to relish dissing the town they live and grew up in. It seems to be the thing with the Hollywood scene, it isn’t self worth that drives people, it is basking in the reflected glory of others. That is my problem with most Laker’s fans…

When a show has a good first season, I tend to hang on and watch forever, thinking they might get the magic back.

Hell, that’s why I still watch “Scrubs”.

Hate is a Strong Word

From a King’s Fan who lives in Los Angeles and who has to contend with the Band-wagon fans and the True fans as well. It is hard to cheer for the enemy.

I do admit that when the offense get’s rolling the [Redacted] is a beautiful brand of basketball to watch.

But that being said… experiencing the heartbreak that most of us on this board did from the early 2000’s is just too much to get over. We have not EVER experienced a Championship… and for the [Redacted] Championships feel like a right.

I feel the best way to sum up our thoughts is simply this:

My two favorite teams are The Kings and whoever is playing the [Redacted] that night.

Blessings.Love.Peace

I'm pretty sure at least 50% of my Laker hatred is directly from Phil Jackson

I have some amount of respect for Kobe. Ditto for Horry. Shaq, just a tiny bit. Rick Fox is simply too pathetic to even matter. But I have absolutely 0 respect for Phil Jackson. In a great number of ways, he is the absolute antithesis to many of my core values, on and off the court.

My hatred isn't all about the Kings

kobe is a smug, arrogant, douchebag of a human being not to mention a drama queen. He is almost like a hollywood actress. He always has some phantom injury or court case that makes him “so brave” for playing through them. Artest is a bandwagoner. No one should ever name their so sasha no matter how girlie of a boy he is. I like gasol as a player but wish he would clean himself up. Fisher is the biggest fake of a “character guy” in the league. Odom is fine no problems with him. Bynum is overpaid & overrated. Most of all I just hate the refs bias towards them. Also I will admit a tiny tiny bit of jealousy not from wins or championship but the way the media just kisses laker ass nonstop 24/7 on every single channel & website it just makes me sick. And last but not least I HATE bandwagon laker fans, not older kareem & magic fans but all the douches who have never lived in LA or been to a game at staples who love them just because it’s easy or trendy

I used to be a huge Laker hater

But now i don’t care as much. The bitterness over that painful 2002 series is gone as I’ve grown up and realized that sports isn’t worth getting worked up about like it was when I was younger. It still hurt quite a bit when Kobe hit that shot the other night but it didn’t take me as long to get over it as it would have 7 or 8 years ago.

So Go Ahead and go to Silver Screen and Roll

Because of all the answers you have posted from my “apparent obvious” question, Silver Screen and Roll has put up a somewhat funny post.

I’ll say it all the time, I really do enjoy being a fan of a team that is so hated. It’s fun. I came on here to be classy. I came on here to be nice. And honestly, I still think there are good fans in Sacramento. My dearest friend from college is from Rocklin and she despises the Lakers. After the last game, I didn’t rub anything in her face, she just was so upset that I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t make her feel worst.

That’s how I feel after this entire post. I feel like I can’t say anything because there is still bitterness over the early 2000’s. I was nice, but my fellow Laker fans really relish the fact that we are hated. So I’ll let them do the talking. I do love being a Laker fan. I love the Lakers. I love Kobe. I love Derek. I love Pau. I love Ron. I love Phil. Hell, I still got some love for Shaq. I’ll always love Horry. I’ll always love Rick Fox.

It’s fine if you want to hate me. I don’t hate you or your team. I’m honestly a classy guy. But I do recommend checking out the Silver Screen and Roll under “BREAKING NEWS: SACRAMENTO STILL BITTER.”

Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.

I said it after the last [redacted] game

But my wife doesn’t want to go to those [redacted] games with me beause she’s convinced I’m going to get into a fight someday. Its OK if fans of other teams show up and do a little cheering (sort of) but [redacted] fans are obnoxious, constantly turning to the crowd after every made shot, trying to start chants in OUR house. Its rude, its childish and I shout them down and mock them every chance I get.
(and I’m much louder than anyone I know)
And by the way, Kobe takes terrible shots most of the time (they do often go in) – but just terrible 21 footers and crap.
He’s one of the few guys I actually wish injury and pain to.

Yes we hate the lakers, they are evil, in the end they will get what they deserve. in the basketball world that means less than 40 wins, first round defeat in playoffs, kobe gets injured, kobe retires, the championships that the F***ING REFS cheated in will not count, and ummmmm…..staples center catches fire.
