So the bike is Amare,

the wagon is Brockman, and they called Brockman for the blocking foul, right?

Our 3 rookies are amazing

Tyreke, you’re an animal on both sides of the floor.
Omri, you have a beautiful shot and have a huge heart.
Brockness, you’re a fucking warrior that the league will fear for years to come.

Yeah, we lost, but at least we have a future. All hail Kings Reke, Omri and Brockness.

But I’m not sure why I am a smartass for not sharing your pain. All I wanted at the beginning of this season was for the last two minutes of most of these games to mean something. My wish has been granted, in spite of no Kevin Martin, in spite of no Francisco Garcia. Sure, I’d like to see them win these games and I am disappointed when they don’t, but I’m over most of these losses before Jerry and Grant signs off. I see this team as being so far ahead of where I thought that they would be, and I am just thrilled. Pardon my enthusiasm.

Fair enough

It’s just that sometimes the effort to look at everything positively seems a bit hysterical at times here. It’s obvious we are exceeding expectations and that we have a very good team – but to be reminded of this ad nauseum after every shitty loss – as I said – simply gets old for me.

But I did not have you in mind when I wrote this – you are many things, but rarely dull.

Exactly

I know that it isn’t the popular notion, but this team isn’t ready yet.

I would love to see them win some of these, I truly would and somebody jumped on me last time I said it, but this team really could use another lottery pick.

The goal, to me anyway, is to win a title. I don’t think we are going to get that Wade/Bosh/LeBron FA, so we have to build from within and creatively through trades. This draft has been HUGE, but a high lottery pick might also provide a big piece next year.

I don’t want to see a middle of the road team that settles for a #5-8 seed for a couple of years. I want to see a title brough to Sacramento in my lifetime. I want this team to do well, but I’m also hoping that they can develop this year and add another key piece in the draft and then have this core together for a great 5-7 year stretch.

We’ll start seeing these close games go our way soon enough.

My main question is where was Sergio? I know that Evans is back and Beno is still playing well, but Sergio has a knack for getting the Kings back into games when they are having bad runs.

Other than that, the rookies were the stars tonight and I’m finding that I get to say that almost every time this team plays. We’re on the right track!

So I watched tonight's game on the internets as usual

and I gotta say, the Phoenix announcers were BY FAR the best I’ve heard all year. Times a thousand. They were positive about their own team, but also very complimentary about the Kings the whole time without being the least bit condescending. So, pretty much the exact opposite of the Portland announcers.

They were gushing about ’Reke, Omri, and Brockman all night. They kept saying things like “Turn in your Rookie of the Year ballot right now and mark it for number 13” and “Brockman is an absolute beast down low”. Probably the most impressive thing they said all night though was when Thompson was called for that foul against Nash towards the end (in the corner), they first were sure that Gentry called a timeout before a foul was called, then when they showed the replay the play-by-play guy said “They called a foul on Thompson?!? A phantom foul call, and the Suns really get a break there…”

i actually think he needs to at least take a look at the hoop

in those situations. he has a decent touch around the basket. at least mix in an up fake or something sometimes. don’t just always race for the 3 point line as fast as you can. they started playing the passing lanes on him instead of guarding the basket. you can’t let the defense get away with playing you like that.

that said, the guy is a mother. add amare to the list of those who can’t believe that a 6’7" at best white guy (and yes I think that comes into it) is d’ing them up and can’t STAND it

and I hope spencer looks in the mirror and gets motivated by losing minutes to a guy with half his natural gifts

On an unrelated note...

I think it is great that somebody out there is giving away tickets to needy families, or foster kids or whoever they were but people, if you want to talk real loud to one another, stand up every 3 minutes and trade seats with someone else and not pay attention to the game, stay the f*ck home. It sucks to say that. He is one of my favorite players and the reason I created a twitter account, but the turnovers and constant fouling is costly in crunch time. I don’t know what other option we have against big guys like Amare but anyway…

Its interesting

a couple days ago I said it should be Donte, and I still think it should be.

But….

The huge question is…Is Omri really, really that good. He’s been amazing so far, if this isn’t an aberration, and if he’s really going to get better…then he has to start. Because he’s just that good. I’m not willing to go there yet, because I don’t want Omri to get those expectations. I’m willing to wait the entire year before I go there. But if Omri plays and shoots like he has so far for the remainder of the year, he has to start because he’s stepped in as a core piece of the team you build around. His PER is 16.2 right now, and if anything I think that understates how good he’s been.

Free Omri...trade.Noc.

Spencer seems to have a really great game,

followed by 2-3 bad games. He seems to be most effective as a Point Center. With Reke as our PG I’m not sure his skill set matches well with Westphalls offensive strategy.

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

by nothingbutnet on Jan 6, 2010 10:26 AM PST up reply actions

Westphals offensive strategy seems to be play defense

Spence gets replaced by Thomas & Brockman because PW doesn’t care if his center scores or not as long as he defends & rebounds.

Your PointCenter observation is right on track. That’s by far Spencers best role on this team. But, as long as Tyreke is the star, Spencer better get used to it, and find a home for himself exchanging elbows down low.

If Spencer is going to keep coming out and setting picks, without ever getting the ball (no pick & rolls or pops), he better get used to following Tyreke into the paint and crash the boards. I’m really confused as to what the role of the center is in PW’s offense, as I’m sure Spencer is.

I wonder

If it is just Spencer doesn’t fit into the game plan, or if Westphal doesn’t care to figure out how to include Spencer in any game plan. He has definitely benefitted the least from the coaching change, as he had a extremely solid final 25 games last year, statistically at least.

by MichaelMack on Jan 6, 2010 5:45 PM PST up reply actions

Is there an offensive game plan for Spence?

I see a lot of different plays, but they revolve around the player with the ball. Tyreke runs a few iso’s, post ups, and drive & shot or kick. Beno has his pattened pick and pop. JT gets his occasional feed into the blocks for a running hook, or an mid range jumper. Even Omri, has his slash into the paint for a finger tip scoop or lay-in. Spencer seems to be more of the high post screen setter & passer.

I get the feeling that the entire offense is freelance. Everyone doing the thing that they do best, when the opportunity presents itself. Kind of a hog pog of various shots with no real theme or strategy. And, as the shot clock is running down and the player with the ball can’t get to his comfortable spot, the play ends badly because no one else is working to get to an open spot because they don’t have the ball.

I think Spencer had a solid final 25 games, because the offensive was more structured and with Beno as our only PG, alot of the offense was running thru Spencer. That’s why he had a good game against the Lakers. The offense ran thru him alot. 7 assists if I’m not mistaken and 30 pts.

I missed a good chunk of the game

but it seemed like Donte was playing pretty well before he hurt his ankle

JT with another double double tonight

it sure didnt seem like it. you know a player is getting better when he has a double double and it’s a quiet one.

Yea, lost this one at the foul line just like the last game.

Outscored by 11 at the FT line in a 4 pts lose. We did everything right, but can’t help ourselves when it comes to fouls.

Now if only he can sustain this.

If he can produce 15-19pts consistently, I think we can make a case for Noce staying in the rotation.

Cuz there is nothing thrilling about such things.

Hawes

I like every player on the team except Hawes. He pouts, has a bad attitude, soft, and is just not very good. On nights he doesn’t score he’s a liability. The kings need 1 more big man to compete, but in the mean time give May Hawes minutes.

In petrie I trust

but I feel like this team is sooooo close to being good that we should make a move now before this team starts to get a losing mentality. It’s got to be frustrating. Sorry to beat a dead horse but give me AK47, give me Okafor as long as KM isn’t involved. please geoff

okafor. exactly. the grizz are halfway decent now because they have two monsters in the post, gasol and randolph. we have a monster(not tonight) in JT, and a mr hyde in hawes, sometimes he’s so timid, especially on the defensive end

by Harrisonyaka on Jan 5, 2010 11:17 PM PST reply actions

Brockman = Pollard?

No, really. The way Brockman has the love of the Sacramento faithful is very reminiscent of Pollard back in the day. Beyond that, both guys are just warriors out on the court who fight and fight every second. And of course their offensive ceilings are/were fairly limited and they have about the grace of an anvil (or a sledgehammer or a Mack truck or a freight train).

The only difference is that Pollard, for all his (almost) anger out on the court, is also incredibly goofy as well all know. I certainly haven’t seen that side of Brockman yet, although I haven’t gotten much of a chance to spend time hanging at his house since I live in Portland…

by nobodyinparticular on Jan 5, 2010 11:29 PM PST reply actions

Brockness...its just the way he fights for those offensive rebounds...

because he also grabs the momentum for the team…yes JT can pull down offensive rebounds as well..but something about Brockman gets the crowd into it…

what do i want to see more of?

he did it once in tonights game. he grabbed the offensive rebound…and put it back up quickly for a score. he does more of those..people will need to start calling him the garbage man.

Coach Westphal's postgame comments are very inspiring.

Go to the kingsflix channel on Youtube. Can’t wait for the day his promise becomes true. I can tell, though, that these losses are just igniting a fire in these young Kings and they’ll start winning these “almost” games.
