We deserved that loss.
Their play in the 4th was pathetic.
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.
Of all the recent games
this one hurts the most in my eyes
The Kings needed a point guard in the 4th Q

GS was smothering Evans...
I know that our shooters were missing open 3 pointers, but when the defense is focusing so much on one player, you have to have another in the game who can handle and move the ball. Beno was ineffective and Rodriguez could have easily penetrated and at least created some fouls for cutting players.
This is the one annoying trait that I see with Westphal – he goes with his gut so much that at times, the Kings look really disjointed. Like the entire 4th quarter tonight…
"Granted, this is not a great situation, but when all you have is lemons, you add some vodka to dull the pain..."
Damn straight!
Where in the hell was Rodriguez in the 4th???
"Granted, this is not a great situation, but when all you have is lemons, you add some vodka to dull the pain..."
They needed points in the 4th Q
and ’Reke was getting plenty of them up till then

again, I really don't think it was the Pg's fault
Whether it was Beno or Evans, both had to overdribble and seemed to be looking for their teammates to be running a play. The players didn’t run the play right and it made the PG look bad. If it was just Evans doing it, it would be one thing, but when Beno does the same thing, I’m thinking it isn’t the Pg’s fault. The team needs to run the plays correctly and space the floor.
Sorry
Evans played 1 on 5 the whole 4th quarter. Let’s call a spade a spade.

At least he looked to pass.
Unlike Beno. Who would just hold the ball for most of the shot clock.
One thing I do notice...
When the game gets tight, the Kings stink at setting picks. Both Thompson and Hawes try to roll too soon, thereby negating the effectiveness of the pick for both themselves and the point guard trying to work off of the screen. To your point, the PG needs to make them hold their spot until he has passed, but the bigs are looking for the ball entirely too quickly…

i was yelling my ass off

Tyreke is young.
But those two behind the back dribbles were piss poor basketball.

when Turiaf is the only warriors big
why can’t the kings play JT and Spencer and actually try to get some sort of inside game going? I can only recall about 3 post feeds to one of our bigs for the entire game!!
especially after Spence had just played some awesome minutes!

I am really upset.
The Warriors are a bad team and the worst defensive team in the league and we went without scoring forever. I think I never want to see Tyreke iso in a close game again. I am pissed about this loss there needs to be real change made with the way we play in close games I expect better of this team.
What? Talk about a overreaction
You don’t want Tyreke in a close game again? I think you expect too much. This team needs to learn how to close games and the only way to do so is to go through close games. Tyreke will make mistakes, but he will be in at the end of games because he is the star of this team and the experience only benefits him and the rest of the team. So get used to it.
I do not want a Tyreke ISO in a close game again.
IT does not work. I want Tyreke to play, but watching him dribble until the shot clock winds down, get forced to go left and then turn the ball over is getting old. I would like to see a play or a screen or a pass once in a while.
This is worse than last year.
I got to quit expecting a win.
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

i’d prefer to see SPence and JT finish games. Sure they have some bad moments, but they are crafty and are an offensive threat….which is definitely needed
by thisismellow on Jan 8, 2010 10:13 PM PST up reply actions
In general, yes...
but tonight, JT looked like he had to take a mean leak in the 4th quarter. He was jumping all over the place for no good reason, couldn’t wait to roll to the basket before setting a solid pick, and couldn’t hold onto the damn ball. Brockman was effective early, and sitting late. ???
"Granted, this is not a great situation, but when all you have is lemons, you add some vodka to dull the pain..."
but i dont agree with not playing guys
just because they have struggled in that game. a good player can and often will make the big play for you down the stretch
by thisismellow on Jan 8, 2010 10:32 PM PST up reply actions
That's the tough part...
At what point to you sit the player for someone else. As I said, in general, I agree that JT in particular needs to be in during crunch time. Tonight though, he was so rough I thought PW should have either gone with Spence or Brock…
"Granted, this is not a great situation, but when all you have is lemons, you add some vodka to dull the pain..."
Brock seemed confused on defense though
He didn’t seem to understand when to switch on picks, and Randolph left him standing there on that back door cut. I didn’t think he seemed like himself tonite.
Brockman let one guy get by him (Curry?)
Then on another play he had to pick between Curry, who was open for a three, and Biedrins, and there was some confusion between him and JT as to who had Biedrins. I don’t recall the Randolph play you’re talking about. Bottom line, though, they had a double digit lead when he was in there and things were in control. After he stopped seeing the floor, not so much.

I think this season has just not gone at all how PW expected it to (in a good way)
his best player has been basically hurt all year, and now he has this budding superstar who plays a style like pretty much no other player in the league. I really like PW and I think he’s been great with saying all the right things and such, but now he needs to really do his homework and figure out how to win some of these games, because we’re a much better team than anyone thought and we should be winning more, injuries or not.

???
The Kings are not a better team than was thought. JT’s development has been along the lines of what was expected, Hawes has regressed, Tyreke is transcendent and Beno has upped the ante, but that’s negated by KMart and Garcias loss. Casspi is proving himself to be a rookie – a very good rookie, but one nonetheless. And Brockman is our only effective back-up big, and I don’t think many teams in the league would want him as their back-up big.
This team has alot of holes in the roster, especially tonight. They were doing real well, I thought, up till the last quarter. Can’t go hard on Westphal or any specific player for the recent loss streak.
I will fight anyone who dares insist Westphal hasn’t done the best job possible this season, and I say that as someone who didn’t care for Paul when he was signed.

Its what it looked like to me
The players looked confused. The pg was trying to direct them to where they were supposed to go, but the guys looked like they didn’t know what to do. The spacing was horrible and led to some TO’s. I’m thinking the PG is standing there waiting for a certain player to go to his spot and all of a sudden, its 8 seconds left on the shot clock.
He was going 1 on 5 with his head down
It helps to look at a teammate if you want to direct him.
Face it. Tyreke has spoiled us. But he’s a rookie and has some limitations to his game, and the word is getting around.

You said it right, when Tyreke gets nervous, his head goes down.
On that double behind the back mess there were two players wide open.
so why is he not pulling guys out

by thisismellow on Jan 8, 2010 10:36 PM PST up reply actions
By he do you mean Westphal?
Because if you are, then I think that is the wrong approach to take with a young team. You can only yell so much until you start losing guys. Right now the coach has the entire team’s respect and continuing to rip into them wouldn’t do much. Westphal is here to teach, and yelling and screaming may look good, but it doesn’t work for most coaches not named Popovich and Sloan. Look at a guy like P.J. Carlesimo with the Sonics/Thunder. He got fired after a year because he lost the team with his coaching style.
i like tyreke
I love tyreke. but how many times has he come 2 or 3 on 1 and ball faked and shot? I don’t think he’s doing it because he’s selfish — I think he’s doing it bc his whole bb life that has been the best option to score… it is time for him to realize he has nba players on the wings and to pass the goddamn ball

I dont disagree that these things happen. It is hard to lose scope that last year the games lost were not even close. it is the hardest process to be a fan in because each game gives hope for a win but the team is still learning how to. Neither you or myself will say this is a playoff team but we both hope for a win each time. i will say this is the process a team like this goes through when rebuilding.

Yeah, he only had 39
and made that kick out to Morrow for the key 3. And got a ton of steals. And led his team to a victory. And didn’t play scared.

If K-Mart plays tonight
we win by 20. Could have used Donte tonight too, with Noc launching misguided missles all night and JT choking away the game with one bone head play after another.
I say we trade JT while his value is somewhat high (in package deal for Bosh or AK-47, please). If not now, then before even considering re-upping for a big money deal. He commits so many dumb fouls. He leads the league this year after leading the league last year. The writing is on the wall with this guy. He doesn’t learn from his mistakes. He has average to below average shooting touch, no matter what JR wants to say. He misses bunnies and wide open 10 footers, and runs over defenders standing right in front of him, then throws up his hands in disbelief. If Tim Duncan has the highest BB IQ among PFs, JT has to be have the lowest.
JT is 23 years old and yet he acts so immature. I don’t think I can recall a player in Kings history so emotionally imbalanced as this guy. (Not off the court, mind you, when the ball is in the air.) Tyreke is 3 years younger yet acts light years more poised. Imagine what would happen in a playoff game when the pressure is on. JT would crumble.
I wonder if playing at a small school like Rider gave the guy an inferiority complex? Seems that way. Regardless, I have had enough of JT. It is easy to say give the guy a break, he is young, his second year, yada, yada, yada,…. but I am convinced if we are going to be an elite team it will not be with him as our starting ‘4’. No way. I have more faith in Spencer.

no, picked up my lady at the airport, went to dinner and listened to the game
turned on 1140 when the Kings were up by 17 and it was a long ride home…

Total buzz kill in a lot of ways
I’m still numb (I think) from shock as to how they lost. It’s like they’ve personally re-invented the losing down the stretch rulebook to personally torture every Kings fan in the universe. I know this isn’t the case, but sometimes I wonder.

unpopular to say - but some of the air has been let out of the balloon
and the Kings are coming back to Earth a bit more in line with where we expect them to be, record-wise.
All things considered – the individuals are excelling still, but the inconsistency of team play is leading to the loses. In the most positive of lights, they are good loses for the most part. Still don’t see any quit. As you know, the season is a marathon and this is the uphill part of the run. Some stumbles, some falls, but still hanging tough.
As long as the team shows grit it is up to us fans to stay stalwart and keep our chins up with them.

Kind of amazing how fast expectations got out ahead of where the team actually is
Everything’s on the right track, but young teams do dumb things and lose close games. We’re all going to need to be patient.
And frankly, losing isn’t the worst thing in the world right now. Moral victories are fine and gut-check/this-is-what-happens-when-you-don’t-move-the-ball-in-the-4th-quarter losses are fine. The Kings’ two best players right now are rookies!
One more high draft pick and a couple of trades and THEN we can start thinking playoffs. For now let’s just enjoy the ride. It’s going to get a little tiresome in here if everyone starts committing verbal suicide every time there’s a tough loss.

I guess I'm more like the guy standing on the sidewalk shouting
Don’t do it. Don’t do it!! YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO LIVE FOR.
I'm cool with playing to our abilities,
its when we make consistently dumb mistakes down the stretch in lots of games and playing beneath our abilities that bothers me.
The rookie argument can’t always be the excuse. These guys have skills and have been playing ball for like 15-20 years. 10 turnovers in a quarter for a rookie team sucks.
Westphall needs to lose his temper a bit with these guys. The soft we will continue to work on it attitude doesn’t always work.

These guys were practically crying! They get it. They’re not happy with it. They’re trying hard. You yell when the effort is not there, not when they’re trying hard and just not quite there yet.
This.
Paul Westphal has only so many buttons to push. Not pushing them to win a game, that in the grand scheme of things, that means little in the overall outlook is okay with me. Besides, if Tyreke Evans can’t push this team to victory, there is no way in hell Paul Westphal will coach them to more victories. This is a players league, and the Kings best player is Tyreke Evans.

I guess I'm missing your point,
Reke played fine he just didn’t get the support from his teammates.
I think Wesphall was upset with his team for the same reasons. I don’t believe they followed his directions.
As much is its a players league, great players don’t win championships. Great teams do.

Core of that great team is a great player
So, gotta disagree with that. It takes great talent to work with the coaching staff, the right mix to support your great talents, and for it to all work all with not getting injuries at the right time. Winning a title is so difficult. Winning a NBA championship is not for the birds this is for sure.

I don't want them to feel bad,
I want them to wake up and play to the level they are capable of.
Reke dribbles down court and everyone waits for him to drive to the hoop.
If the entire opposing team is clogging the lane, these guys need to get open so he can pass the ball.
Ball movement essentially stopped the last 6 minutes of the game. And correct me if I’m wrong these weren’t the Celtics, they’re the freakin Warriors.

And yes I expect better than we played tonight. I hope Westphall and the Maloofs do to.

It's to be expected in the game and post-game threads
The morning after always brings perspective.
However, I defy a fan of any team to not get frustrated watching so many close losses. If you aren’t somewhat irrational afterwards, I have to wonder how big a fan you really are (not you nbrans, just in general).

Teams have figured out out to play Reke.
If we don’t have our jumpers going, were done for.
I think I would have run small in the 4th and put in all of our shooters. I’m surprised we didin’t feed it more to Udoka as he had a hot hand.
Sergio I think could have really helped late in the 4th.

It looked liked Evans was tired tonight
Even with the Warriors playing zone, Tyreke seemed to settle for jumpers a little more than usual.
Does this recent play stimulate possible trades,
or does it stiphen it? With fan attendance up and excitement growing in the city, do the Maloofs get impatient or wait until the next draft?
Time will tell. About 4 weeks…

Losses like this are tough
but let’s take it in stride, guys. It’s no secret that this team has a long way to go. The team has been playing a little bit over their heads but there are some pretty big holes remaining to fill.
On the other hand, we had one of the better drafts in recent NBA memory. Tyreke is going to be one of the dozen best players in the league very soon, and Casspi is a revelation. Two of our best players have barely been on the court all season, we’ve got a really competent head coach, a fat expiring contract in K-9, and if it turns out we do have to go back into the lottery again, well, it’ll be the last time in a long time.
It wasn’t pretty out there tonight, but things are looking up.

I kept trying to fill my glass half full, but there was a hole in the bottom of my glass.
I think the Kings have the same problem. They have a hole at the 2 and the front court. Martin fixes one, and learning how to set up easy shots for our bigs would fill the other.
There’s only two ways to put points on the scoreboard when your shooters go cold, get to the free throw line and set up your bigs for high percentage shots under the basket. We didn’t do either last night.

And
The Trailblazers beat the Lakers tonite, with Juwan Howard playing center for 35 minutes. I going to go throw up now.
Maddening
I was at Oracle & couldn’t believe my eyes.
That 4th quarter was infuriating. The Kings looked confused on offense & genuinely terrified under the bright lights.
I can’t believe Gstate came back & won…
I was also at Oracle.
And I’ll be there again in February to watch the Kings make up for that fourth quarter collapse.
"El once, chico. Eleven."
Count me in...
I’ll be there too, man.
And when Gstate visits Arco soon we all need to rock the house & make it LOUD.
Why did Tyreke
seem so ‘elsewhere’ in the 4th quarter. He looked like he had some sort of issue and wasn’t going to do anything if he didn’t have the ball. Same thing on the defensive end, and he wasn’t going to the boards at all. When he hit that three, he seemed to perk up some, and you could see him turn the effort up on the following defensive possession. I wonder if he got chewed out, or who knows…
The other pivotal moment was the offensive foul on JT with about a minute to go. Turiaf clearly had one foot inside the circle, and JT made that shot. Big point swing to have a potential 3 pt. play taken off the board.
Anyone else wonder
If Brockman should have gotten more run? I thought JT could have used a break in the fourth, and Brockman played well in his limited minutes in the first half.

JT didn't play well period.

JT sat out the first 6:13 of the fourth.
Brockman might have gotten a couple of rebounds, but the Kings were already winning that battle +9 on the offensive boards, and Brockman’s offense offers little compared to JT & Spencer. If anything, PW could have left Spencer in to finish the 4th. He had a couple of clutch baskets, and 2 assists on Tyrekes 2 three point shots. And, the one thing Spencer brings better than any of the other bigs, is his passing and initiating the offense from the high post. And, our guards didn’t seemed to be getting the offense going.
