Preview: Nuggets at Kings

Thanks to Aykis for pinch-hitting. -- TZ

Those Hot Tub Girls wish they were Nene right now.

Star-divide

THE OPPONENT

Denver is coming off of two straight wins, a one point win against Golden State without Carmelo Anthony or Chauncey Billups, and a two point win against Cleveland in Chauncey Billups return.  Carmelo Anthony will not be with the team today, but Billups will be.  The question is, is Denver a better team without Carmelo, or without Chauncey?  Carmelo is the 2nd leading scorer in the NBA, but Denver has seemed out of sync without Billups, and his arrival last year was what really propelled them to an eventual tough out in the Western Conference Finals.

According to 82games.com, the Nuggets offense is almost 7 points better with Anthony off the floor than without.  Its only about 2.6 points better when Billups is on the floor.  Without Anthony, the Nuggets lose their biggest offensive threat, and for the 3rd highest scoring team in the NBA, that isn't good news.  Still, Billups is a force to be reckoned with, and without Anthony, he and J.R. Smith will be the Nuggets primary offensive threats.  The Denver bench also will be better than last time since Ty Lawson will be coming off the bench to spell Chauncey, instead of Anthony Carter.

Denver is also not that great of a Rebounding team, so the Kings should have the advantage there, depending on how much we make Nene look like an All-Star.  He seems to have some of his best games against the Kings, and for the Kings to win, they'll have to keep him out of the paint.

LAST TIME

The first ever StR Night at ARCO was a huge success as the Tyreke-less Kings held off the Chauncey-less Nuggets 106-101.

THE KEY BATTLE

Without a doubt in my mind its Tyreke Evans v. Chauncey Billups.  Neither of the two played last time, and both are keys to their team's success.  I doubt Billups will spend much time guarding Evans (that task will most likely be left to Afflalo), but Evans will likely match up with Billups on the other end.  Billups is a very good 3 point shooter (39.3% for the year), so Tyreke can't afford to let him roam tonight.

BOLD PROCLAMATION

There will be less Peaches chants than the last time these two teams matched up.

INTERESTING SIDESHOW

Will the Brock Ness Monster devour the Bird Man?  I think he'll have a bigger impact on the game at least.

NUMERIC PREDICTION

Kings by 5.

Can we please win a fucking game?

Its really starting to hurt losing all these close games. Time to end the streak.

Let Jason Heyward start the season in RF, and get the hell out of his way.

This game,

then Orlando on Tuesday, then a six game east coast road trip, including a pair of back to backs. We could use a win here.

The really crappy part of facing Orlando Tuesday

is that they’re in the middle of a slide, losing to Washington, Toronto, Indiana and Chicago. If they lose tonight against Atlanta, that’s just one more good team that is looking to get back on track when they meet us.

as opposed to?

every contest will be tough for the Kings. Orlando made it to the NBA Finals last season, I don’t think they take any games off.
ARCO has started to climb back to previous prominence; teams no longer come to Sac thinking “relax, easy win”.

Let’s get beyond the McNuggets before Superman, Vinsanity and Ron Jeremy come to town.

I don't want Orlando to be trying extra hard against us if you know what I'm saying

But yes, gotta beat Denver first.

I hear ya, but that is what faces the Kings this month

January must be longer than one month as it seems at least that time since the last Kings win.

May be time for a win, no?

Let’s see of we can pull this off. After last nights loss I hope the kids come out with fire, hustle, and effort. Save the execution for the 4th.

Go Kings!!

Therapy

The fans can directly affect the game. Let’s show people why we’re one of the best fan bases in the NBA. We need to make Arco a nightmare for Denver. I’m expecting a loud crowd tonight.

If you’re free later, get out to the game! I live in the bay but will make the unplanned trip w/my friend. I just need to be there.

After all the heartbreaking losses, our team needs us tonight.

When you’re at the game, think of everything that pisses you off. Think of all the bad calls, stupid turnovers & agonizing losses. Think of missed layups & Kobe Bryant.

Then channel all your rage & scream for the Kings & freaking WILL them to victory.

by MadProphet on Jan 9, 2010 2:49 PM PST reply actions

You hit all my key points, Aykis, well done

but, let me add.

The Kings are in somewhat of a shooting slump in January. Shooting 45.6% and 33% from 3’s, while only averaging 102ppg. Contributing to their worst record 0-4 since last Octobers’ 0-3. And, some of the slump can be directly attributed to the drop in JT’s performance. JT is having his worst month since October. He’s shooting only 36.7% from the field and 44% from the FT line, and only averaging 10ppg and 8.2rpg. In fact, he’s only averaging 13pts, 8.7 rbs on 42% shooting over the last 10 games. As our primary big averaging almost 37 minutes per game, he has a major impact in our overall performance. And with Spencer being limited to about 24 minutes per game more than ever the burden falls on JT to anchor the offense and defense.

With Carmelo out the burden for the Nuggets has fallen on Kenyon Martin who has really stepped up. He’s been a 20/10 guy over the last couple games and has been their leading scorer & rebounder. As a team, one thing stands out for the Nugget, they get to the FT line more than any other team, averaging 31.5 FTA per game. And, score 23% of their 107ppg at the line.

Even with Nene & Andersen, Denver is not a great rebounding team. But, Nene will score and if you foul him, he’ll hurt you at the FT line. With Mello & Donte out, the Kings get the better deal in the injury department. But, in another game of run and gun, the Kings will need more ammunition than they brought to the GSW game.

Without StR at the game to amp up the crowd, and with the Kings playing more in line with how we thought they would be this year, it’s hard to pick a Kings victory. But, if our 3pt shooters (Omri & Noc) find their range, and the Kings can manage to hold on to the ball, there might be a chance. The guards need to stay tighter to their man, and not wander off. If you’re going to help rebound just do it, but don’t drift off half way, and end up not rebounding & not guarding. Someone is going to have to keep Martin off the boards and keep a hand in his face. Who will Westphal put in to do that, and how well they do that might just determine the outcome of the game.

I can’t pick a winner, but I believe the Kings keep it close. Go Kings.
