Post Game Thread: Kings at New Jersey

What an ugly game, at least in my opinion.  Most of it just was not fun to watch.

On to Cleveland, and a better tomorrow.

That was pretty much my reaction.

When we were up 97-89, all I could think was “Alright, lets just follow Lawler’s Law and be the first to get to 100 and we’ll win”. Well, then we didn’t score till the Nets got to 102.

Q: How do you turn the ball over 26 times and win?

A: Hold the other team to 42% FG, 25% 3P, 65% FT.

Poor, poor shooting.

by BPaoliano on Oct 29, 2010 7:04 PM PDT reply actions

The same way you shot 45 FT's on 32 fouls,

While the Kings only got to the line 26 times on 30 fouls. Your guards beat their man an penetrate and either get fouled or dish off to your bigs. Who score or go to the line themselves. We had 7 more FG’s but they had 19 more pts from the FT line.

Also, it didn’t help that Omri, Beno and Head were 0-11 from 3pt range.

Had a nice lead coming down the stretch

and then we had some really suspect shot selection.

I thought Landry and Jackson played great. It looks like Cisco is def playing like two year ago Cisco, which is a good sign.

I thought Tyreke wasn’t as aggressive in certain spots as he should have been. The Nets would also try to make him go left, and he would usually give it up when forced that direction. He had some pretty nice highlight reel drives, and even when he missed we had our bigs cleaning up the glass, especially closing out the half.

I’d really like to see the Kings drop it into the post with DMC much more than shown tonight.

Shame we couldn’t hold on to this one. These are the types of games we really need to walk away with the W to improve overall.

by chenp22 on Oct 29, 2010 7:05 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Tyreke was 5-9 at the rim and 2-9 away from the rim.

And, I have to agree about feeding the post more. The Kings only had 4 assisted baskets at the rim, and 9 assisted baskets off of long 2’s. Too many passes out for low percentage 2’s and not enough passes in for high percentage shots.

Bingo.

Aggressive Tyreke works way better. If he’s not driving, dish it in the post. Otherwise work the PNR.

Still only game number 2. Things to work on.

I also felt like the W was swept out from under us.

by chenp22 on Oct 29, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Tyreke thinks because of his length he can sag off defenders

but that hardly works on quick shooters like Harris

on that 3 late in the game you saw reke really sagging off, and the once Harris got the ball back he shot it quickly, Reke reacted slowly. He gets to overconfident in having his man covered sometimes just because he depends on his wing span

I know he has the potential to be an awesome defender

But honestly, I just haven’t seen the effort on that end. As much as it hurts to say it. Yes, you can tell me about the Arenas steal last year and a couple other plays, but a couple plays in a year is not really quality defense.

I’ve seen his jog back way too many times and miss rotations way too many times to give him a pass on that

Agreed

It is a hole in his game, but it should be pretty easy to fix with effort. I am still disappointed on how we struggle to run an offensive set in the last two minutes of the game.

good points

I think Darnell played well the whole game. He gave some quality minutes, on both sides of the court.

Head again showed some good effort on defense, but didn´t get much going.

Travis Outlaw surprised me. He made some tough shots. And I think Favors will be a very good pro.

I was actually really surprised by their record last year

Not that they should’ve been in the playoffs or anything, but they had SUCH an abysmal record for so much of the season (finally picking up some wins at the end of the season to avoid the “record” for fewest wins) but I don’t feel like it was an accurate reflection of the team. They weren’t great last year but they certainly weren’t as bad as their record indicated. I expect them to surprise some people this year.

If we shot 80%

of our meager 26 FTs tonight, we’d have made 4 extra FTs.

4 extra points. The game would have been different, the end game scenarios would have been different (they’d have to keep fouling us and we’d keep making 80% or better with Beno).

Time for the team to run FT drills.

Rough game

Terrible officiating, but it was pretty even both ways. Really hurt the rhythm and flow of the game and made it painful to watch.

I was once again impressed with Cousins. I was interested to see how he’d fare against Lopez, but he attacked him on offense and had a nice effort.

Tyreke’s jumper, at times, looked amazing. If he can get that thing to be a consistent weapon it will be insane. I also liked seeing him bail out on some of his drives instead of forcing the shot. I noticed several drive-and-kicks. I also saw the beginnings of a great pick and roll combo with Tyreke and Cousins.

Tough loss, but definitely a few things to still be excited about. It’s a long season, maintain hope.

Never forget, I'm an idiot.

Officiating didn't get NJ to the FT line 45 times on 32 fouls, bad defense did

and Tyreke was only 2-7 on jumpers away from the rim, so I’m not sure his jumper looked all that good.

What I will say is that the ticky tack fouls took us out of our game, and all those missed open 3’s early in the game changed the dynamics and had us playing from behind the whole game, Which took a lot of pressure off of the Nets.

There were definitely some ugly shots too. I was thinking specifically of one point in either the second or third quarter, Harris was lagging way off to prevent the drive, and Reke drained some nice jumpers. Looked amazing. Those must have been his two makes.

Yeah, sucks to lose, but our team isn’t playing well enough to be a 2-0 team. So maybe a little humility will go a long way in making us correct our glaring faults.

As far as losses go, I like it

Here’s the thing – the team fought hard to get back from a 17 point deficit and showed a ton of effort, passion and chemistry. But by letting the foot off the pedal and allowing it to slip away, they hopefully learned a lesson early in the season: you can’t ease off the gas until the game’s over.

by jeremy548 on Oct 29, 2010 8:21 PM PDT reply actions

I rejoiced in the Win in Minny, and refused to look for fault even tho I know there was some

So, I refuse to allow my sadness at the loss, make me strike out and find fault this time either. It will take a few more bad beats to distroy my inner peace which overcame me when the season started.

Needless to say, this game was ours for the taking, so I’m not as saddened by one more game in the loss column as I am with the team failing to play a smarter game. So, I’m moving on with the hope that the Kings learned a valuable lesson from his one, and don’t allow an early lead by their opponents to make them rushed and take them out of their game.

One thing I always liked about the 2000-02 team, was that they never played with a sense of desperation. And, calmly went about their business whether they were ahead or behind. Let’’s hope this team develops the same type of calmness as the season progresses.

basketball IQ

Its not hard to see that this squad will need to make some serious strides in the intelligence department in order to win some games… especially close games late. Its clear that the Kings are very talented when everything is clicking, but when it comes to half court execution on offense and defense we have a long way to go.
Reminds me of a very talented college team that struggles when challenged and forced to execute… like um Kentucky (weird).

that´s where a savvy veteran would come in handy. I guess Cisco is the closest one we´ve got to fit that bill, but I´d be happier with someone in the Camby, Grant Hill, Kurt Thomas mold.

I guess it is a process, and I hope the young guys will learn from each game.

LOLZ… calmness and no sense of desperation. Man 2000-02 Kings squad was oozing talent down to 10th man. They were perfectionists, they had more talent than 10 NBA teams put together at that time. They knew they were cut above everyone else. THey knew they could punk and eat anyones lunch anytime ov the day. They beleived that they could walk up into LA and bitch slap the lakers whenever they wanted. They weren’t talented they were up-down court magicians. These new kings are atleast couple of years away from being talented enough to walk into NJ and punk the NETS, let alone the LAKERS.

Donte +10 in 4 mins, Sam -12 in 6 minutes

Donte should be playing 40 minutes a game and Sam should be launched into space, obviously.

I’m really liking Darnell Jackson as a backup, though I don’t know how Whiteside will grow without some playing time.

by Bitgod on Oct 30, 2010 3:11 AM PDT reply actions

It's difficult to play without a pure creator.

We don’t get any easy buckets. We have to work hard for each one of them, whether it’s a complicated drive by Tyreke or a contested post move. Only Cisco and Beno hit open shots with great efficiency. The Nets had more than 10 baskets created by good screens or completed plays which ended up with Lopez all alone underneath the basket.

Btw, 4-5 of Lopez’ earned fouls never happened.

This game should have been somewhat easy for us under normal circumstances.

by ZenBaller on Oct 30, 2010 4:45 AM PDT reply actions

Holy mother of meltdowns

I missed most of the game, including the end, but why did our “small forwards of the future” only play 23 minutes, including 3-plus for Donte? I am assuming Landry and Cisco played a lot at the three?

There are pros and cons to Westphal’s approach of mixing lineups, like surprises from guys like Jackson. But over time I hope he settles into some kind of rotation so guys know their roles. That’s probably asking for too much, though, with a team like this that is still in flux and lacks a leader.

Travis Outlaw probably isn’t looking like too bad an option at the 3 about now, right?

"I know we certainly gave up a lot to get him, but we do have other players on the perimeter who we can plug in. We haven’t had anybody who we feel is a go-to guy in the post. So we gave up a lot to get a lot, and we’re real excited about adding Carl." - Paul Westphal

For comparison -

The sum total of the five years that Omri and Donté are under contract comes to $7.5 million. The difference here is $27.5 millon. There is no current Sacramento King with a contract of that size (Udrih is due a little under $21 million over the next three years if he cashes his 3rd year option, making him the leader in guaranteed money).

So the question is, would Travis Outlaw be worth $35 million to this current squad, and would he be worthy of the Kings’ largest player investment?

but I ‘m really thinking of the conversations in the early days of July that preceded his signing, which then made those discussions moot. It’s looking like we have some options at the 3 beyond Omri and Donte, anyway, which is good because they both need to be hungry.

There's no excuse for getting outscored 17-3 down the stretch

None. If you’re still working on your D (understandable for now), you need to put your scorers out there and either score at the bucket or draw some fouls. Unfortunately, Landry isn’t great when double teamed late, JT was ineffective and Cousins was fouled out.
Still, no excuse.
